If we only have 40 cars for this race I bet we will see less then 40 cars in each race of the season except for reatrictor plate tracks. Funny that TMG didn't show up for this race 2. Also, one of the BK Racing haulers that was apparently on the auction block, has shown up at the old Darrell Waltrip Racing shop which is the latest BK Racing shop. So I think somehow the #23 will run the Daytona 500. Probably with a BK Toyota with a Race Engines Plus engine in a joint effort between BK and Arrington. No idea who will drive it. I'm hoping Landon Cassill but I doubt that will happen. 3. I don't see BK lasting through the season and who ever gets that charter will probably run the full season. 8. Anonymous posted: 02.09.2018 - 10:18 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 7 I agree with that. We will have the 36 Charter teams and probably the 30 and 66 most weeks. Premium and Ware may bring a car from time to time. Also if BK do t last one of those teams I mentioned will probably get the Charter anyway. It's sad it got to this point 9. Hendrick Motorsports' youth movement will be a big story leading into this race. Reigning NASCAR Xfinity series champion William Byron makes his Cup series debut taking over the #24 Chevrolet team as Chase Elliott changes the number on his entry so he will make his first start in the new #9 Chevrolet. With Dale Earnhardt, Jr. now retired from Cup competition Alex Bowman takes over the #88 Chevrolet on a full-time basis starting from this race as Junebug's hand-picked successor. Kasey Kahne has also moved on from Hendrick to make room for Byron, this will be his first points race at the wheel of the Leavine Family Racing #95 Chevrolet. Darrell Wallace, Jr. finally gets to move up into Cup on a full-time basis, he replaces Aric Almirola at Richard Petty Motorsports to take the wheel of the iconic #43. This will be the team's first race after switching from Ford back to Chevrolet, marking the #43's first race as a Chevy since NASCAR downsized its race cars starting with the 1981 Daytona 500 that Richard Petty won in a Buick. Danica Patrick makes what will likely be her final Cup start in the race where she won the pole and had her best career run in her first start as a regular back in 2013. In her last race she'll finally get to run her famous #7 at the Cup level; reuniting with former crew chief Tony Eury, Jr. and her longtime sponsor GoDaddy for her final stock car race. She plans for this one-off in Jay Robinson's Chevrolet to be the penultimate race of her career before a final start at the Indianapolis 500 later this year. Former Coke Zero 400 winner Aric Almirola makes his debut for Stewart Haas Racing taking over its #10 Ford from Patrick. He brought his sponsor over from Smithfield as part of the new deal. Ryan Blaney takes the wheel of Penske Racing's reviving #12 Ford; marking the first time since 2010 the team will campaign a car with that number full time. (Blaney previously did two races in that car back in 2014). With Blaney moving on Paul Menard makes his first start for the Wood Brothers as the former Brickyard 400 winner comes over from RCR to take the wheel of the fabled #21 Ford. Mark Thompson gets to attempt his first Daytona 500 at age 66; ironically matching his longtime car number. 10. Someone of Rubbins Racin' posted that Joey Arrington was helping them get the car ready and now the BK Racing #23 hauler has shown up at Daytona. Still no word on driver. I'm really hoping Landon Cassill but that may be a long shot. When Corey LeJoie announced he would be in the #72, he joked on twitter about last minute announcements and Landon tweeted something like you ain't seen nothing yet. 11. Basically, they don't feel like they have the speed to be competitive in the plate races, so they're not going unless they have a sponsor who specifically wants them in that race. They will run the other 32 races. 15. JR-TV posted: 02.09.2018 - 12:26 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Reportedly Gray Gaulding is on the way to Daytona to drive the BK Racing #23 Toyota. Thompson's only prior attempt at the 500 was in 1994 when a bad blowover in the ARCA race forced him to withdraw. Ryan Newman is now the most senior driver on the tour, he debuted at Phoenix in late 2000 making him the last active Cup race to have competed against Dale Earnhardt and Darrell Waltrip at that level. 28. 42Fan posted: 02.09.2018 - 4:35 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) 26 IndyCar has been dying since 1996. So, outside of Daytona and Talladega where the 62, 92, and 96 will be showing up, I expect a lot of 36-38 car fields (37-39 if the #23 actually remains full-time, but I don't know who would be funding the entry). 32. Back in the old days teams only brought one car to the track, so the same car ran the Clash, the duals, and the 500 (and if it broke, a lot of thrashing was done to put it back together). Bringing two cars, a primary and a backup, didn't become common until the mid-80s. Then it became common practice to run the backup in the Clash, and the better car was saved for the 500. As you'd expect, there were cases where the backup/Clash car was needed for the 500. At times teams have even used 3 cars, with the Clash car being returned to NC after the race, and a new backup brought down for the 500. Since the advent of the NASCAR-spec chassis & body that's gone away, since the little tweaks that could be done to make a car fast for 20 laps aren't possible now. 78. possum posted: 02.15.2018 - 4:38 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @33 - Indy is a somewhat different situation because the limiting factor there is engines. It is likely that if engines were available, you'd have quite a few more cars attempt the race (not like the old days when 80 cars entered, but enough to make qualifying meaningful). In NASCAR, there's an ample supply of cars and engines for Daytona, if someone wanted to put a team together. There just isn't anyone who wants to try. 79. After all, there were no fewer than three wrecks in the qualifying races caused simply by cars diving under other cars without touching them, and at least two of those were snap spins, where the driver has lost control all of a sudden, and in at least one of those cases, one of those incidents came with the car that spun not having anyone that close to them. In past cases when this has taken place, NASCAR has altered the rules to make the cars more stable so they wouldn't lose control in such circumstances (1981 was a textbook case of this, though cars were getting airborne then, which has not been a problem so far this year). And with temperatures for the race slated to be about 80 degrees, this year's Daytona 500 has the makings of a wreckfest if things don't significantly change, because the handling is going to be even worse, and cars could literally spin out if they're running by themselves. Add to that the fact that the drivers of today simply aren't as disciplined as they were a decade ago, and tend to make erratic moves, and this year's Daytona 500 has the feel of a race where a steady hand and a cool head may be needed more than in any year in recent memory. The odd thing is that I don't see that many steady drivers in really good cars in this year of youth at Daytona, and most of the drivers that seem to have a more steady hand and a cool head don't seem to be in really fast cars. 84. TeamDCR fan posted: 02.16.2018 - 12:00 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) It could get ugly. Turn 4 has been treacherous over the last few years and now after tonight it may get worse. It's a little like the COT days with the wing, where a car could run under another and the air would just push the car around. Example: Joe Nemechek and Sam Hornish in 2010. Hornish went under Joe, Joe's back end went around and he crashed. Joe thought Sam hit him, but the replay just showed the car going around with him underneath. 85. cjs3872 posted: 02.16.2018 - 12:49 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @84, turn four at Daytona has always been treacherous, mainly because of a bump on the exit of that turn. In fact, the first big wreck in Daytona 500 history, a 9-car wreck early in the 1975 race, happened there. Then in 1978, Richard Petty cut a tire because the track was tearing up in three and four, and took himself, David Pearson, and Darrell Waltrip out of the race (Waltrip did return, but far behind the leaders). Then in 1979, there were two big crashes in that turn, Phil Finney had a horrendous crash at the end of the 1980 Firecracker 400 exiting turn four, then there was another big wreck in the '82 Daytona 500 when Cale Yarborough knocked the rear bumper off Bobby Allison's car, and huge crashes in the Daytona 500 in both 1986 and '88 also occurred there. And of course, the single biggest crash in auto racing history, the infamous 37-car pile-up in the Modified-Sportsman race in 1960, also occurred off turn four. And it was a series of horrendous crashes in 1983 and '84 that resulted in Chris Economaki naming turn four "calamity corner". But I agree. Unless there are adjustments, either by the teams, drivers, or NASCAR itself, it could be a wreckfest of a Daytona 500, but not only in turn four, but also everywhere else around the 2.5 mile superspeedway, because drivers are losing control without contact where they've never had problems before, including the tri-oval. Perhaps NASCAR could widen the rear spoiler, because it's the corners of the cars, particularly the left rear corner, where the problems seem to be at their worst. In 1981 and '93, they significantly increased the size of the rear spoiler (doing so DURING SpeedWeeks in '81), and the results were two of the greatest races in Daytona 500 history, mainly because the cars had more stable handling. Right now, the end of the rear spoilers are about 6-8" inside from the corner, and that's why so many cars are having handling issues to a degree that we haven't seen in many years. 86. Scott B posted: 02.16.2018 - 12:58 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Yes, I'm concerned with the non-contact induced crashes we've seen. I don't think it's an inexperience issue. Set ups should be pretty much the same between the Duels and the 500 in spite of the difference in distance, so I don't think the danger will be tweaked out with the typical adjustments. Worst case would be a cautions breeding cautions situation, with restarts forcing side by side racing. Best case may be drivers stay single file for long periods, and that's not what fans want to see. 87. Jonathan King posted: 02.16.2018 - 8:59 am Rate this comment: (0) (1) Yes, I agree that this is an issue, but I don't think that NASCAR will change anything because they want wrecked cars at the end of the day because they want to make the races entertaining to fans and fans are entertained by wrecks. If they change anything, they would make the car worse so that way there would be more wrecks. So this race is going to be a wreckfest. 88. She had great teammates over that time period, some of the best equipment, and yet the best she could do in points is 24th on two separate occasions. To me, the incident that got Austin Dillon the Daytona 500 win was a racing accident, Almirola tried to block the advance of Hamlin and Dillon and Austin Dillon's run he had on him ended up putting Aric Almirola into the wall. A lot of people are going to consider it dirty, but it's two laps to go in the Daytona 500, nobody's gonna lift and that's racing and that is the way it goes sometimes. I am okay with how this race ended. Got to give a call to Mark Thompson who pretty much fought a war of attrition and finished 22nd for his efforts with the amount of cars crashing out. I know it's probably easy for people to just blame Austin for what happened but I just don't see it. It's pretty clear (at least to me anyways) when FOX was showing Aric's bumper cam that Austin didn't come down on him when he spun. Aric just barely moved back to the right. If you're gonna blame anyone I think it has to be the people back at Chevy who decided on using the Camaro. Maybe if the car had a different nose on the font end Aric wouldn't have ended up in the wall. Also I'd like to add that ironically this finish was very similar to the IROC race here in 1995 where Dale Sr was in the same position as Austin was today. Dale was in second on the last lap when he made an inside outside move on Al Unser Jr. When Al went back up to block, Dale was there and much like today with Aric, Al went spinning into the outside wall as Dale went on to win. 317. Joey Logano wound up fourth, and his car number has almost as much history as the other three do. The fact that, in the 60th Daytona 500, the top four finishers drove car numbers 3, 43, 11, and 22 is somewhat symbolic. And of course, Paul Menard and Ryan Blaney, who drove car numbers 21 and 12, two more historically important numbers, finished sixth and seventh. And speaking of Blaney, his 118 laps led in this race represents the most laps led in the Daytona 500 by one driver since Davey Alison led 127 in the 1992 race, most of which were led after he narrowly avoided a field-decimating wreck on lap 92 (he led EVERY green flag lap after that). But Blaney is becoming one of those drivers who, while capable of becoming a dominant driver, seems to come out on the short end because of some questionable moves he makes on the track, which can be traced to some degree to lack of experience. He blew the Clash with a questionably early move and lost the XFinity Series race at Indy a few years ago with a questionable move in traffic on the final lap of that race. And he nearly threw away his qualifying race with another ill-timed move on teammate Joey Logano that wound up working. Now there wasn't much he could do at the end of the Daytona 500. Bad luck on a caution likely cost him the victory. But it's a disturbing trend for him. As for the race itself, and how it finished, I can't say I was surprised about much of anything that happened, because I had predicted a wreckfest before the event happened, though how the wrecks took place, when they took place, and the number of elite drivers they involved was a bit surprising. Handling was the main reason I expected a wreckfest, but to my surprise, handling didn't really come into play that much, which was a pleasant surprise. But except for the first wreck, every wreck in this race, including the one that decided the race on the final lap, was caused by one thing. Blocking. And the lack of experience in the field, which I thought would also be a big problem, turned out to be even worse than I thought it would be, and also was a contributing factor to most of the wrecks. And as the race turned out, most of the drivers still in contention were the steady drivers, the ones that could be counted on NOT to make rash moves. Dillon, Almirola, Hamlin, Logano, Menard, Blaney, and Newman all have reputations as drivers that are steady and don't make the rash decisions that put so many others out of the race. And had he not had a loose wheel following a pit stop, Trevor Bayne, who had worked his way into the top five by miraculously avoiding the two big early wrecks, would have been right there contending for his second Daytona 500 win for exactly the same reason. Darrell Wallace, Jr. was the big surprise to me, because he doesn't have that kind of reputation, but more races like this one will give him that same reputation as a driver that doesn't make rash moves, and certainly having King Richard in his corner will help him in that regard. I said a few days age that many of the young drivers lacked what I refer to as "race craft". This race provided plenty of evidence of that fact, and those that displayed that often-overlooked quality were the ones among whom this race was decided. And frankly, that's as it should be. After all, what good is having speed and a front running car without being able to get it to the finish. 350. Add that to the recent retirements of Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, and Carl Edwards, and the result is a relative lack of big name drivers the fans can relate to. It's really not that much different than what happened in 1989 in that regard after the retirements of so many of the sport's all-time greats in such a short period of time. The difference between 1989 and today is that, in 1989, you still had a number of the sport's heavyweight names, such as Elliott, Earnhardt, and Waltrip in highly competitive equipment, with future superstars like Rusty Wallace and Davey Allison nipping at their heels. You don't really have that today. Except for 7-time champion Jimmie Johnson, Kevin Harvick, Brad Keselowski, and Kyle Busch, the sport is generally bereft of big name star drivers, and where that hurts is not on the track, but rather at the gate and in TV ratings, which in turn, could hurt things on the track if it continues. First, the charter system has killed competition among teams, and the competitive mid-level teams of the past are now gone. You pretty much have to drive for Hendrick, Penske or Gibbs to have a shot to contend unless your name is Larson, Harvick or Truex. Second, the ride-buyers have pushed out good, up-and-coming drivers from those rides. The drivers who were good enough to take mid-level cars and contend with them have been forced out because they were unsponsored. The only sponsors left were the ones who sponsored the established, elite drivers or those that came in through the ride-buyers. 365. " As I said in the Atlanta comments, I don't think charter system is doing as much damage as it probably could have, I think both of these points have more to do with the massive Arms Race there sees to be in NASCAR. I mean look at some of the teams that shut down in the last couple years TBR - Had a Charter, sold it Circle Sport - Had a Charter, Sold it Roush - Had a Charter, Sold it Mike Hillman - Didn't have a Charter Of those only one I would say was directly related to the charters was Hillman (Circle sport too, but they did buy a charter) (I can't remember did PPR have a charter or had they sold the team to Premium by then?) The problem is much more than the charter, although I think they payout for non-charter teams is a deterrent, I don't think it's the biggest deterren, I think the rising costs of the sport is moreso 366. JSPorts posted: 02.23.2018 - 6:24 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) In 2015 (the year before the charter system), 51 teams attempted a race. In 2016, that number decreased to 47. Last year, the number was 44. Another thing that led to a decrease in the number of teams was the introduction of the Gen-6 car, but the numbers had begun to return before the new system came into place. A number of teams shut down or reduced their schedule following 2015. The reason all those teams sold their charters is because they couldn't find money to run their teams for a full season. The reason they couldn't find money to run their teams is because of all the gimmicks NASCAR put in place (Chase, COT, charter, etc.) driving fans away. If they weren't able to run the full season, they had to sell or lease the charter so that they would get at least something out of it. In the old days, if you didn't have a full-season sponsor, you could just run part-time. But if a team got a sponsor for a few races now, it wouldn't make sense financially because they wouldn't be able to make any money as an open team. First the top-35 rule and then the charter system essentially killed part-time teams, which were a staple in NASCAR for its first 55-60 years. It's much easier to make the jump from part-time to full-time than from nothing to full-time, so it's also hard for new owners to come into the sport from that respect. That means that, whenever a full-time team closes, there's nobody there to take its place. I can realistically see a NASCAR where we have 20-car fields in about 10-20 years. They'll mandate 4 cars per team. There will be 5 super-teams created by mergers between (1) Hendrick & Ganassi, (2) RCR & its affiliates (Germain, JTG, LFR, RPM, SCR), (3) Roush/Stewart-Haas/Front Row, (4) Penske & the Woods & (5) Gibbs & Furniture Row. The cars will probably be uniform with a single manufacturer (like IndyCar used to be) and the level of competition will be akin to F1's currently, where only one team can dominate at a time and will win most of the races that season. I also expect them to scrap the base points system altogether and go to a system where the playoff points earned are the only points a driver has. They'll probably also kick all non-ISC/SMI tracks off the schedule. 367. cjs3872 posted: 02.23.2018 - 7:27 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @360, I believe that's a significant reason for the drivers of today not having the race craft that their predecessors did. Every team has been trying to find the next Jeff Gordon or Tony Stewart, to name two. But what many don't realize is that, while Gordon and Stewart were young drivers, when they got to the higher levels of racing, they had many years of racing experience under their belts. Gordon had 15 years of racing experience behind him when he got into NASCAR and Stewart had just won all three of USAC's championships in the same year when John Menard brought him to IndyCar Racing and Harry Ranier brought him to NASCAR in 1996. Davey Allison was much the same when he arrived in NASCAR in 1986. Young, but experienced. Many team owners have been looking at a driver's age and not necessarily at his experience level, in terms of how experienced a driver he is, and knowing how to race is not a talent, but rather, it's an acquired skill that takes years of experience to learn, not unlike similar acquired skills in other sports that takes years to learn, regardless of how naturally talented he might be. When you look at the history of professional sports, you'll find that often the greatest performers in their sport's history were also among that sport's hardest workers. The best have to work to get to that level, no matter how naturally talented they might be. However, the point made in post #363 regarding how many times a driver crashes is misleading, because most of those crashes happen in restrictor plate racing, where a crash at the front of the field can also involve the back of the field just as easily. And then there are those crashes, such as the first one in this year's Daytona 500, which was the fault of no driver because it was caused by a tire failure, not human error. To me, that's why crash stats are misleading. Restrictor plate crashes and crashes caused by tire or mechanical failures inflate those stats to the point where they almost become meaningless. 368. Wallace doorslammed Hamlin, who was none too pleased with the young Richard Petty Motorsports driver, and things escalated from there. After what happened to him in 2013, Hamlin should know better than to get into something like this with a young driver, because it didn't end well for him then, and he'd better be careful here, or it this might not wind up any better for him. Younger drivers like Wallace usually will take things a bit too far, just as Joey Logano did with Hamlin in 2013, even if it's not intentional. 371. joey2448 posted: 02.24.2018 - 5:56 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Adding to cjs' point, Wallace referenced a Hamlin quote in a postrace interview, mentioning that maybe 'he's taking adderall', to explain his attitude towards Wallace. Earlier in the week, Hamlin jokingly said on a radio show that most of the drivers in NASCAR take adderall to help improve performance in races. Lot of people thought Denny was serious, but he later said he was joking, but it still kind of blew up into this thing. After the 500, Denny was then informed of Wallace's postrace comments and didn't take kindly to them, then after he walked out of the pressroom, ran into Wallace and confronted him about the remarks. Nothing happened, but the two now have a row between them. 372. Altracing posted: 02.25.2018 - 12:47 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Aric just said Austin texted him that night to apologize to him 373.
