I don't know if that's been changed, but it may have been. I liked it when there used to be some overlap, it made the field a bit more diverse and saved a few bucks for teams that didn't have to re-body a perfectly good racecar. 17. That's not a good excuse for why we should have short fields. The teams that got cut out by the charter system (#40, #35, #26, #98) weren't start-and-park teams, they all competed hard each week. They just didn't have the resources of the top teams. Also, the quality of the field has declined recently, too. 10-20 years ago, it was not uncommon for there to be 30 teams that had a legitimate shot at winning each year. Now, we're lucky if that number is 10. Obviously, there are many more fluke winners now because of all NASCAR's gimmicks (stages, playoffs, overtime, etc.) but there are not many cars that can threaten to go out and win a race on speed & driver talent every week. 27. Greg9ChaseFan posted: 02.20.2018 - 10:39 pm Rate this comment: (3) (0) I will agree the charter system stinks. COme to the track, and the 43 fastest race. Period. That would make qualifying interesting. 28. JSPorts posted: 02.21.2018 - 1:02 am Rate this comment: (2) (0) I think you're on to something. Having a qualifying system like that would be good and increase competition, because nobody would be safe any week. You'd have to be fast at every type of track to make the show. This would also increase the quality of the field because, if there were more opportunities to qualify (40 spots available to qualify in rather than 4, and you could make the money that you deserve for your finish) for races, then teams would have to hire better drivers instead of ride-buyers so that they could make all the races. 29. Those four cars were are missing are trash and literally won't finish better than 35th anyways. Sadly the day of Underdog teams just showing up and racing are over, at least in Cup. Furniture Row will go down as one of the last from the ground up teams to make it big. The current ownership cares more about stablizing the teams that are already established than brining in new ones. There are at least 15 drivers of these 36 that could easily have a flawless day and pick up a win this year. Then another 10 that could surprise us with a win this year. It's just different and we as fans are used to seeing a bunch of small teams showing up and usually ending up with a dnq anyways. But I can see the overall quality of completion increasing with what we have now. Heck with teams forming alliances now like Front Row they could be top 15 team every week now which we would never say about them a decade ago. NASCAR fans love to complain about anything and everything...'Bring it back to the old days...' People who belittle and dismiss what NASCAR was in the past hate auto racing. But they love them some modern DERPCAR. In this copy-cat world, none of Brian's oh so popular "innovations" have found their way into the other major racing series. You don't see F1 splitting their races into three with commercial break cautions and giving out a significant number of points at these breaks that ends up making it so that the winner doesn't receive the most points in a third of the races. You don't see IndyCar resetting their points three times during the season and then having a one-race "playoff" determine who they call a champion. You don't see unlimited attempts to finish the race under green elsewhere because the wreckathon that frequently results makes the stars of your series look like rank amateurs (all those pointlessly destroyed race cars and yet they claim money is tight). Remove all the contrived derpiness added under Brian right this second and what do you think would be the better product? 2018 NASCAR or 2001 NASCAR? Or 1990s NASCAR? 1980s? 1970s? Or perhaps there is something great hiding underneath all the crap that has piled up under Brian that would reverse the decade-long attendance and TV ratings slide? Who knows? 37. And that the chartered purses will be enough for chartered teams to be able to make it to the track each week and make a profit. 36 seems bad right now but if it never goes lower than that, I think it's not a bad number. Gray Gaulding's Distant Cousin posted: 02.23.2018 - 5:22 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) There's an arms race in NASCAR and it's pricing a lot of people out of the sport. The amount of money teams are putting into R&D and the amount of shiny tech NASCAR is putting into the cars means teams are having to up the Sponsorship bill massively. I heard that the amount of money needed for a full season sponsorship in 2008 will only pay for 10 races in 2018. If NASCAR could find a way to facilitate cheaper cars for its main series then they'd be ok and we'd have more cars in the series, but the rising costs are going to kill off at least cup. Truck and bizarrely the Xfinity series look pretty healthy right now. That being said the Charter idea is bad, but it's not NASCAR's biggest issue right now. 61. Josh posted: 02.23.2018 - 9:17 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) What I've wondered with the Charters too is that NASCAR evidently can "revoke" charters for poor performance or, apparently, bankruptcy (BK Racing). If that were to be the case, would NASCAR redistribute the charter to someone else, or would they hold it? That's how we conceivably could get down below a 36-car field. 70. JSPorts posted: 02.23.2018 - 9:21 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) That's a really good question, and I'm not sure even NASCAR knows the answer to it. It seems like (based on their points and winnings structures) that they would want to redistribute it. However, I'm not sure if there's anyone else that wants it that has a sponsor and could afford it. I believe the field will eventually dip below 36 cars simply because nobody will buy charters when either the teams try to sell them or they're revoked by NASCAR. 71. 1995 Subaru WRX STi posted: 02.23.2018 - 10:37 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) All charters are is an exchange of cash when wants too 'get rid of it'. I wish Brian France gave the teams more money (like they previously asked, around 5% more of the pie). Whats worse is NASCAR isn't addressing the obvious issues about racing quality and declining TV figures, and they are literally adding to the problem of rising cost with their shiny new gadgets like the new ignition systems and the digital dash and doing nothing to counter balance the rapidly rising costs of race sponsorship. Heck if they make racing more attractive then more people would watch and and even the higher costs of funding could be worth it for bigger companies than it is now. 74. 1995 Subaru WRX STi posted: 02.24.2018 - 1:50 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) ^ I would agree with that but lets not forget the teams are spending themselves into oblivion. When I was in high school I could buy a car for 400-600 dollars and have it race ready for under another 400. I'm a grown man now making a decent living and I haven't been able to afford racing for run on the weekend is 10 years. You cannot find quality running car for under 2500 and then the modifications became more costly and they only people winning anything were breaking the rules anyway and spending thousands more on their supposes "stock" cars then when someones tries to claim their car they deny until they cannot deny a swap anymore and then they just jump to another track near by. We've had 3 dirt tracks in my area completely shut down two of which are destroyed. Another once big name track used to be on the World of Outlaws tour barely fills the stands anymore. Sadly racing seems to by dying at all levels. 87. So it's no surprise that France immediately bought into Kaufman's idea of doing the same thing in NASCAR, and setting it up so 36 teams would have the same role, and same lock on the money, in NASCAR. While 2001 was a rookie year, two wins and a 9th in standings with one less start was quite impressive on its own. 2003 (due to the Brickyard 400 win) and 2006 (5 wins and nearly 900 laps led all season) were definitely the best years during that span. After the 2007 Daytona 500 win, minus the non-points victories, Kevin Harvick went three straight years winless. It wasn't until the consistency in 2010 when he came back on board, and that's when the new chapter arrived. 2010-2018(present). Since then, Harvick has been on fire. 2012 was a horrendous year for RCR overall and Harvick still pulled a victory beating the dominate Kyle Busch at Phoenix to close the year out. Not to mention he's been legitimately the Top 3 driver since then at the least. I've always believed that RCR has always been overrated and was only great due to Dale Earnhardt's tenure there. Kevin Harvick definitely carried the team during his time there, for sure. He may not have as many wins at Jimmie Johnson, but he sure deserve to be in the conversation as one of the best out there. I was the ONLY one, since my family were all Dale Earnhardt (then later Tony Stewart) fans through and through. I guess when I was a baby, the rainbow color paint scheme caught my eyes then, and I was born in 1991. I grew up always being a Jeff Gordon fan and there is no one better in my eyes. It was frustrating from the end of 2007 till the beginning of 2014 being his fan for sure, but I was real proud of his accomplishment and wasn't afraid to admit how much I idolize him, even as a commentator. However, when Kevin Harvick beat Jeff Gordon for his first win at Atlanta, as much as I was excited about the finish but a little disappointed he didn't win, I knew how much it meant not only to NASCAR but to the world because of Dale Earnhardt's legacy. (Keep in mind I've always liked the Earnhardt's, I never fell to that whole "Earnhardt vs Gordon" fandom BS). After that win, Harvick has definitely been a second favorite of mine (of course he's overshadowed by Gordon so I didn't care what Harvick did most of the time haha). 2014 was definitely the most exciting year for me. Kevin Harvick AND Jeff Gordon were perhaps the two fastest drivers the entire year, winning 4-5 races, leading a ton of laps. It couldn't get any better than that for me. I would have preferred Gordon, but I knew with Harvick's history of success and how he landed into the Cup ride, his championship was merely delayed since 2010. When Gordon announced his retirement in 2015, as emotional as it was for us "true" fans, I knew who I was going to cheer on next. The Atlanta and Phoenix dominator since he joined SHR! I really cannot tell you who else I'm to cheer for after his departure, but in all honesty, it's tough to choose who to go for next because there are so many opportunities for the young guns. I think I'll just end up watching just for the races and not be a fan of a driver anymore. I have high hopes for Ryan Blaney. 278. Coincidence or not? 279. possum posted: 02.27.2018 - 4:57 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) @275 - that's an interesting question if Harvick helped his teammates at all. Harvick has a very unique style there (had to LOL at Gordon - "he really is shutting off at the quarter mile!"), he drives it almost like Michigan, out of the gas very early, and then part throttle all the way thru the corner. I don't think that's something another driver could pick up just with a little coaching, it would take many laps of practice. It's also worth noting that Busch has a very good record at Atlanta, and even Bowyer, if you take out the MWR years, has been decent. So I think we'll have to watch the next few races to tell - if Almirola and Bowyer are strong, we can figure it's good cars; if they're not, then Harvick's coaching probably made the difference at Atlanta. 280. But as many of the drivers said, they still can't figure out what makes him so fast at Atlanta. It's a combination of the way he works the throttle and the way he hooks the bottom in 3 & 4 without tearing up the splitter on the apron. And it's incredible to watch. 281. Larry McReynolds was the in-race analyst. Chris Myers and Michael Waltrip were in the Hollywood hotel. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
