He hasn't led since this race back in 2016, which was the fifth straight race Kevin dominated and was on a streak of 5 wins in 6 starts. Kevin Harvick started out the season with 2 dominate wins in 3 races (The Daytona 500, aside from the title itself, is forgettable in performance). I'd say Kevin Harvick may be a definite favorite once again. 4. "One of the only", while a common phrase, is grammatically incorrect. Apropos of the subject, Arizona is now the only state in the continental US to not use DST. Hawaii doesn't use it, but they are so far south it would be pointless. 9. Unfortunately it's R&D. @16 Low-T Center has always been a Premium sponsor, no matter what the driver is, boom, it's there. If Chastain was bringing in those Watermelon bucks, I am unsure if this is a real situation for Reed's career. @myself Overall, I'm concerned, because I'm literally a hardcore Sorenson fan, not joking, and I'm just saying, if he's out of NASCAR, I'm gonna be upset. 18. I wasn't expecting GoFas to be the first charter team to miss a race (I figured BK was the prohibitive favorite), but certainly going to the brink like that is another bad sign for NASCAR. 22. JR-TV posted: 03.07.2018 - 5:36 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) @21, Go FAS was never going to skip the race at Phoenix! It was never that bad! They just wanted sponsorship to try to improve their team, not in order to keep them on track. DiBenedetto said the team was financially sound and his job was safe but just didn't have a sponsor for the race this weekend. That's why they took to twitter to see if anyone knew of a Phoenix-area company that may want to come on board. And the response was more than they ever expected. A chartered team will never skip a race because it would be against the rules of owning/leasing a charter. Nascar would take the charter and leave the team in a much worse place. The charter system is set up to where teams that own or lease a charter are going to make enough money from purses to stay open and make it to the track every week. Sponsorship is what helps the chartered team improve and make a profit. 24. Frozen Custard posted: 03.07.2018 - 11:41 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) @21, The 32 was never in danger of not going to Phoenix like already mentioned. The catch is they really needed that top 3 Daytona 500 finish that appears there were going to get before being part of the big one. I think 3rd place for this year's Daytona 500 was over $750,000 and the 32 car needed that money bad before settling for 27th place. There was a chance of Matt winning the Daytona 500. If Matt DiBenedetto did win that Daytona 500, Sponsors would've been interested in sponsoring the 32 car besides getting over 1.5 million dollars of purse money for the event. 32. joey2448 posted: 03.08.2018 - 6:24 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) This will be the last race at Phoenix with the current layout. After the IndyCar weekend here in April, the track will be reconfigured with the start-finish line being moved to what is now the short chute between turn 2 and the backstretch kink. Just like Darlington in 1997, the track will essentially be swapped with the frontstretch becoming the backstretch and the back becoming the new front. Should be interesting to see come November. 33. zuel660 posted: 03.08.2018 - 9:18 am Rate this comment: (2) (0) I really miss seeing race winnings posted after each race. JR-TV posted: 03.08.2018 - 10:50 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) @33, Chartered teams make slightly more than they did before the charter system. They basically took the purses from positions 37-43 and distributed it to the 36 chartered teams. Non-chartered teams do not make very much now and really it's probably not worth taking an open car to a normal(non-crown jewel) race unless you have a sponsor. That's the reason we saw the Premium #55 last week(because Gase brought sponsorship) and we don't see them this week. 36. NewJack posted: 03.08.2018 - 12:27 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) The BK Racing bankruptcy case is extremely interesting if you are interested in how much teams make. Because BK Racing has to report how much they make, and are expected to make. It gives an perspective into how much money teams make. Example being that the #23 made $92,000 for finishing in last place in Atlanta. Which was about $20K more than the last place team made in Atlanta in 2015. (The last year they announced winnings) 37. Mile501 posted: 03.09.2018 - 2:28 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) If you look at practice sessions for all the non-plate races we've had so far, there is a clear dividing line between 31st-fastest and 32nd-fastest (the lone exception being when Cole Custer drove the #51, which moved that car up into the main group). Essentially, we have 31 teams that are competitive and can realistically score at least a top-20 finish on any given weekend. The bottom 5 teams, meanwhile, are way off. This group includes #00, #15, #23, #51, and #72. The #72 in particular seemed better last year but they appear to have slipped back a notch this year. This is abundantly clear if you look at the first practice results from Phoenix. Notice the massive separation (here it's between 30th and 31st, since Stenhouse didn't make a lap). Everyone in the top group is within less than 0.7 second of each other, while the remaining teams are all between 1.5 and 2 seconds back. 41. Assuming their costs are "normal", a charter team can't cover it's engine, tire, and payroll bills just on race winnings (if they're a typical backmarker team). Which means a non-charter team has to have substantial outside funding to even bother going to the race. 51. Before that Gordon in 98, Martin in 93, Elliott in 92, Gant in 91, Earnhardt in 87, and Waltrip in 81. Most in a row is of course Petty with 10. On another occasion he won 5 in a row, the only two times in his career he won more than 3 in a row. Bobby Allison also had 5 in a row. David Pearson won 4 in a row twice. Also, in 1971 Pearson won 5 consecutive starts, finished 2nd, and won 4 more consecutive starts (that was during the period he skipped the low-money races). Pearson is, as far as I can tell, the only driver to win 4 or more consecutive starts more than twice; and the only driver to do it twice in one year. 113. Fontana has been one of the raciest tracks in NASCAR over the past five years, IMO. Sure it used to be dull, but since the track has aged more and more and tire falloff has been king, it has consistently been a great show! 117. Contrary to what some people think, they don't pick the winners. What you want them to do? Shoot out his tires from the spotters stand with 10 laps to go. What are you even talking about? P.S- If you think Fontana is a snooze, you haven't watched a race there since about 2012 or earlier. It's become one of the better big track shows on the schedule. 119. The 2001 race at Atlanta when Jeff Gordon, Jerry Nadeau, Dale Earnhardt Jr and Dale Jarrett all were in the top 5 going 3 wide and riding each other's back bumper. The race winner was, of course, Kevin Harvick. 121. Joey Logano's bad performance in this race also ended his streak starting out the season finishing in the top 10 and leading laps; He failed to finish on the lead lap in 19th without leading a single lap. 126. Chase Elliott finished in 3rd place and earned 14 points for his effort. Kasey Kahne finished 24th (0 laps led) and scored 15 points. That can't possibly be right. Does finishing position simply not matter in Nascar? Seems like it should be the only thing that matters... 129. That's why it says he only got 14 points. on the 2007 Daytona 500 page, it correctly says that Michael Waltrip had -27 points, since he got a 100 point penalty for that race. Racing-reference does update the results page of any race where someone got a points penalty 131.
