Teams will now qualify THEN get their cars inspected, you fail tech and you start at the back. Cars will also be impounded after qualifying with the inspection process there doubling as the pre-race inspection. 5. Martinsville allows the driver to take back over a little bit. Not making any predictions, but I just feel like we may see a mid-packer get up and run up front and have a say in the outcome. 9. The last time he dominated a race at Martinsville was Spring of 2014. Since then he has just 1 win, 1 Top 5 and 2 Top 10's with a total of 116 (out of 3500, 3.3%) laps led. Even his recent form suggests that he'll be nothing more then a Top 10 contender. Also, he still hasn't led a lap this year. 15. Busch, Keselowski, Newman, Hamlin, Logano, Truex, Dillon and Harvick. I'm looking at it from a "what have you done lately perspective" and lately, Johnson has far below what anything that would be considered favorite. He's closer to Dark Horse material. 17. Bobby Labonte was once considered the favorite at Atlanta, but no one would have made that claim towards the end of his career when he drove terrible cars that could barely compete for top-20s. You can't just look at a driver's average finish and make such a claim. As others have said, you have to look at what he's done recently. For years, we went to Martinsville knowing Johnson would contend for the win. But that hasn't been the case recently. In the last 7 Martinsville races, Johnson has 1 win; otherwise, he hasn't finished better than 9th and he only led 24 laps in one race because of pit strategy. 19. JSPorts posted: 03.24.2018 - 7:34 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) In 2015 (the last year they released purse data), the purse for this race was $4,556,126. If the figure provided above is accurate, that's only 30% of what the purse was just 3 years ago. I seriously doubt it truly is that low, but it wouldn't shock me to learn that the purses now are lower than they were 3 years ago. With the loss of the major title sponsor and fans leaving left and right, there has to be money cut somewhere. Of course, the purses are lowering while the cost of racing is still skyrocketing, creating a catch-22 where field size and competitiveness is being depleted because of bad ratings and the resultant lack of funds, but the only way to get those funds back is to have a good on-track product and draw fans back. 41. The second thing is this came from BK Racing's filing, and one thing BK Racing is not good at is numbers (many things in their filing don't add up or don't make sense). OTOH, it's the closest thing we've got to an official purse number. 43. George posted: 03.25.2018 - 7:49 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) No Martinsville racing today. Stenhouse has been decent here in the past (although weather will change the way the track raced today). Very weird indeed if the set-up couldn't be dialed in any closer than that, even if it was way off at the start of the race. 98. Then they had the plastic pipe thing, which everyone agreed was stupid. Then they simply made a deal with the drivers - no race sponsor crap on the roof, and the drivers would stay off it. 109. Also on Sundays after long rain delays when TV doesn't need the extra commercial time. No phantom debris, no cautions for a car merely getting "close" to the wall, and sometimes not even for hitting it lightly. Maybe not even for a car that spins, hits nothing, is out of harm's way, and gets moving again. So..... why not every race? 111. I felt like there was a lot of good racing throughout and there weren't too many caution flags either, but that is a result of it being a Monday race and crews and drivers got places to go, places to be. But listened to this one on the radio, while I was out. Bowyer had been in a bad place lately but he finally made it back to the winner's circle. He's paid the price for Spingate for a while now with MWR shutting down and having to wait on Tony Stewart's retirement in the Harry Scott car. Good things come to those who wait and Clint finally got on the good end. Let's hope he keeps up the good performances. 112. Kennington and the Gaunt Brothers team. 28th isn't spectacular, but good enough to convince me that NASCAR is making a mistake by trying to starve non-chartered teams out of the sport. They impressed for what resources they have to work with, and should get the same check a chartered team would be awarded for that finish. 113. Since his 2016 fall win here, he has finished 15th, 12th and 15th the last three races. 4) Martin Truex Jr continues to lead every laps this season, leading all 6 races so far after this race. 117.
