He did qualify for Paul Menard at Texas last year while Menard was on baby watch, but was subbed back out due to Menard's kid not arriving before the race started. There will be no such swap this week. 4. JSPorts posted: 04.17.2018 - 12:57 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I hope he can have a good, solid weekend and bring the car home in one piece. In his first start, the most important thing is learning the cars and the competition, as well as getting laps in. 5. Ford teams have been using the Fusion since 2006 but the change could set up some epic Mustang vs. Camaro pony car wars in the future. With a new Supra coming down the line from Toyota is it possible NASCAR is going back to performance models? Can Toyota be convinced to use that as their NASCAR model? 7. possum posted: 04.17.2018 - 6:25 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @5 - I wonder why #8? That would be 40 cars. Also the 66 has a plate car, so Talladega could possibly have a DNQ As for Richmond, it's nice to see a new car and the #8 back again 14. The 55 is also a question mark solely because they've skipped a few and didn't do Daytona. 16. 34McDowellFan posted: 04.18.2018 - 8:13 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @15 The #55 is supposed to run the majority of the schedule. Looks like way back in the dark ages Childress also used #22, #13, and #03 for one-offs, and #96 for himself in his first season (I guess someone else had #3 that year). You should look up stats of the other racing series in the world. @105 That is statistically wrong. 2017: 13 different winners in the first 26 races (50%! of total races!) 2016: 13 different winners, #48 had most wins with 5, lowest most wins number along with 1991 (8 less races), 1992 (8 less races), 1949 8 total races, and 1950 19 total races, and the recent years of 2011 and 2012 2015: 12 different winners 2014: 13 different winners 2013: 17 different winners (almost 50%! of total length of season!) 2012: 15 different winners 2011: 17 different winners (almost 50%! of total length of season!) 2010: 13 different winners 2009: 14 different winners NASCAR has never had this much parity in it's history. In 1973 Pearson ran only 18 races, and won 11 of them - together with 4 mechanical DNFs, a 3rd and two 2nds (if you throw out the DNFs, that's an average finish of 1.3). Also, all this Petty and Pearson talk is nice and all. They have the craziest stats of all time but lets not pretend like they didn't race in the easiest era of all time to string together great finishes. The competition level from top to bottom was a joke in comparison to what drivers see today and have seen for over 20 years. If Jeff Gordon or Jimmie Johnson were racing in a day where their team wasn't just the most well funded and dominant team in racing but rather a team that had by far the biggest piece of the funding pie then I bet they would have posted over 100 wins as well. Jarrett, Baker, Junior, Herb and guys like that all put together a bunch of wins and never really ran too many full time seasons but they equipment they had and their skills were so much further ahead of the rest of the competition in comparison to the elite drivers of today it is not even comparable. 146. JSPorts posted: 04.23.2018 - 2:17 pm Rate this comment: (4) (0) There's a difference between real drama and manufactured drama. Real drama takes place when something occurs naturally to create a dramatic moment, like the end of the 1984 Firecracker 400 or the 1992 championship battle. Manufactured drama is a result of rules (or more accurately, gimmicks) put in place to create drama, which often results in undeserving winners (or champions) and a lot of torn up equipment. NASCAR has made its fans expect manufactured drama, so when we get a finish where the margin of victory is over a second or a championship battle that doesn't come down to the final race, people complain. You know what makes certain moments special? They don't happen every week or every year. But now, NASCAR can almost guarantee they will, because with the stages, playoff format and liberal use of the caution flag, they ensure that almost every race comes down to a shootout and every season comes down to the last race. And they've taken away almost all ability for the teams to be innovative and come up with new ideas. Of course I wish every race came down to a last-lap pass and every championship was decided in the final race, but not at the expense of allowing the races and season to play out naturally. 148. I think he said something along the lines of "Most are boring, some are good, few are great, fewer then that are awesome and you have your once in a generation Grade-A classic." There is always something going on when a race is on. It mostly depends on weither the or not the TV people decide too cover it. FOX and NBC can't cover a race too save their @$$. Going too a race gives you a much better perspective of what is going on. It also doesn't help that fans can be really hard too please. 150. JSPorts posted: 04.23.2018 - 4:43 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) But I wouldn't even call it boring. Like 149 points out, there is always something going on before, during and after a race. But the way it's presented to us by both networks that cover NASCAR makes it seem boring. Both are guilty of this, but NBC especially likes to show only the drivers that are battling for the playoffs or that are in the playoffs once they've begun. Yes, this is important, but they could talk about issues that other teams are having or battles for position going on elsewhere on the track rather than giving 20 updates per race on the playoff driver who's running by himself in 16th. Additionally, they dumb everything down as if the viewers have never seen a race before (or at least not a NASCAR race.) Obviously there will be some new viewers, but how many times do you see the NFL broadcasters say "A touchdown is when you get the ball in the end zone and is worth 6 points?" You don't, because those networks know how to do it right. Go back and watch old races. Watch anything with Bob Jenkins. There wasn't a whole lot of that going on, and they focused on stories throughout the field. 151. possum posted: 04.23.2018 - 6:07 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @145 - you think Petty, Pearson, et al raced in the "easiest era"? You're joking, right? Look at the list of NASCAR's greatest drivers - starting with Petty & Pearson, and including guys like Cale Yarborough and Bobby Allison - these guys raced against each other! Nothing easy about that, at all. @149, 150 - too true what you say, the race coverage on the TV is abysmal. For whatever reason, neither FOX nor NBC make any attempt to broadcast to race fans (I don't say NASCAR fans, because they're almost as bad at covering Indycars or sportscars). Both networks are fixated on broadcasting to non-race fans, apparently oblivious to the fact that non-fans aren't watching the broadcasts. And you make a good point about the old ESPN broadcasts. One of the things I miss most is Ned Jarrett's "so-and-so just pitted" or "so-and-so just passed such-and-such" while the camera is covering something else. As far as I can tell today's broadcasters don't actually watch the race, so if it's not on their monitor they can't tell us about it. 152. Today's Xfinity Series is just like that Winston Cup of the 1970s and early 1980s - same drivers winning almost all the races with some weaker drivers winning sometimes and with some surprise winners as well. Only difference is those modern rules. Otherwise it was always Petty, Pearson, Yarborough, Allison and Waltrip show. Why do you think they're all that far away from others? Buddy Baker, Benny Parsons, Leeroy Yarbrough and others weren't that week, but their equipment wasn't always that excellent as those drivers from the Fantastic Five... By the way - Kyle Busch, Harvick, Keselowski, Logano and Edwards (the Fantastic Five of the Xfinity Series) also raced against each other many times and the result is the same. All of them won a lot of races and are far away from the series regulars. Plus, it's always easier to just lap the entire field and just easily make it to the checkered flag and hope that nothing will go wrong than having always someone behind you and you can't be sure you will win until checkered flag. 153.
