I'd say a good goal for Matt in his return is to finish on the lead lap in the top 20. I'm sure Kenseth can and will do better than that. 2. Given that Roush first hired Kenseth on the advice of Mark Martin back in the day it's somewhat fitting that he'll make his return at the wheel of the #6 Ford that Martin made so legendary. Sadly on the other sign of the coin Kenseth's return means that Trevor Bayne will miss his first Cup race since Phoenix in late 2014 as the two Daytona 500 winners will alternate in the #6 throughout the rest of the season. 3. At least that is what I heard. 4. Given Travelodge once sponsored Greg Biffle a guess this new sponsorship is also something of a throwback for the Roush team. 6. If you make a mistake in qualifying, you should go home. That's how it works in the lower leagues like Sprint Car racing. Now the owner's council screwed some smaller teams by forcing them to decrease to 1 car so they'd be an "open" team. We need to go back to the old method where provisionals only are locked in. If Qualifying gets rained out, I suggest holding a hooligan race like they did in the 90's to determine those provisionals so a new team (Like Carl Edwards in 2015 for the first few races) would not be screwed. 26. The results are not going to be there as a result for William as a rookie. The problem with rookies is take a look at Joey Logano. Joey became one of NASCAR's best drivers after he left JGR matter of fact. JGR mishandled Joey Logano. From around 95 onwards that started making a big difference, and it's probably fair to say Earnhardt's skill, especially on the plate tracks, was the main thing keeping Childress competitive after that. (* Junior went to Ford when the Chevy guys picked the Hendrick design cylinder head to be "standard" Chevy design instead of his. It says something about Robert Yates that Johnson had no issues using the Yates head.) 192. He could have jumped RCR's ship in the late 90's. Childress should feel grateful that Dale did stay and I believe he does. There was once upon a time a rumor around '96 or '97 that Nike was going to sponsor Dale and that he might even leave Chevrolet for Ford. It never materialized. @191 Well put... He won four restrictor plate races from 1998-2000, got 2nd twice, and got 3rd once out of 12 races. It's hard to believe he was "never the guy" for Chevy where he was at a disadvantage not being with Junior or Hendrick, but he made himself the guy by being more determined than anyone. Many times he was out powered but found ways to win and consistently lead laps and finish in the top 5. He raced every lap like it was his last. What's amazing that often he would qualify very poorly and within a matter of 20-30 laps (or 2 laps like at the Busch Clash in 1991 when he restarted last for 2nd segment and had the lead by turn 3 of the 2nd lap) he was in the top 5 or leading! @190 Nah, I got ya. @189 You have some really good ideas. I like going out west early and staying there for some time. I like just giving most tracks just one visit. The ending race is a cool idea, I just don't know how drivers would feel about it being after the season. These tracks would need to get people there and keep them. Maybe give tracks 2-3 year contracts, but not five. If they don't do well they lose a date. I kind of wish they would bring back a Winston Million type deal like if you win 3 of 4 of the biggest races or even 4 out of 6. Something of that nature. It should be interesting if Nascar sells. 193. Are we still talking about Dale Earnhardt? Earnhardt was way too competitive of a person to agree to be at a equipment disadvantage because he was "loyal." I say he stayed at Childress because he felt they gave him the best opportunity to win. Whether they did give him the best chance we don't know, but I would be shocked if he didn't think they did, beause he was too competitive of a person to agree to work with an inferior team. 195. Comparing stats from 2001-2013 to show that Earnhardt was at some disadvantage from 1985-2000 is foolish. That would be like me saying that Richard Petty was at a huge disadvantage racing for Petty Enterprises beacause they won 3 races between 1995-2008. Also, my point had nothing to do with Harvick. My point was there isn't enough information to see how strong Childress's equipment was when Earnhardt was having all that success with them because Earnhardt didn't have any teammates to gauge performance. 196. Do you see the name "Earnhardt" anywhere in my post? I don't believe Earnhardt was in inferior equipment, and how you came to that conclusion is ridiculous. My post was about Kevin Harvick, and the fact that when he went from Childress to SHR, Childress got worse and SHR got better. 197. RCR started to decline when multi car teams were starting to dominate around 94-95 ish RCR was late to the party not adding a 2nd car until 97 hurt the organization. 199. 34McDowellFan posted: 05.15.2018 - 3:53 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) Why are we talking about Dale Earnhardt anyway?? And they'd all beat each other in spite of inferior equipment, because no driver not named Earnhardt is worthy of polishing Earnhardt's shoes, and the only way anyone ever beat Earnhardt was by having twice as much horsepower and a superior chassis and probably cheating too. 201. possum posted: 05.15.2018 - 6:47 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) @194 - you kind of have it there - we're looking at the situation with the benefit of hindsight, where we can see the advantage Hendrick was building over Childress and the other Chevy teams. At the time, that was much less apparent, and it's entirely possible that Earnhardt felt Childress equipment was equal, or close enough that with a little work they'd become equal. The other thing to bear in mind is, where would Earnhardt have gone if he'd wanted to leave Childress? For various reasons Hendrick was probably out, and none of the other Chevy teams, including DEI, was any better than Childress. GM was phasing out support for Pontiac (GM's plan at that time was to make Chevy the headline brand in NASCAR, and Pontiac in NHRA). Going to Ford would have meant giving up his Chevy "personal services" contract, and probably also would have meant switch DEI to Fords (which back then, before the CoT, meant building all new cars, not just sticking a nose on with the right logo). So staying with a guy he liked, who he felt he owed something to, in car that wasn't bad and might get better, probably seemed like the obvious choice. 202. Ryan posted: 05.15.2018 - 8:05 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @194 Dale drove the last 11 races for Childress in 1981 after Childress got out of the car. He drove for Bud more for two years and then came back when Childress was able to get some help from Wrangler (even though Wrangler was still sponsoring Earnhardt with Moore, they also sponsored Ricky Rudd as well who drove for Childress) in 1984. They did not have the best equipment. Junior Johnson was the top dog for Chevrolet then and then Hendrick started and ended up having a three car team from 1987 on. RCR was third fiddle to both of those teams for a while and still had success. Earnhardt wanted to drive for Junior, but Junior didn't feel like it would be a good idea to have Waltrip and Earnhardt on the same team. Which was understandable. Dale was aware of what all Childress had gave up to start his team, and Earnhardt wasn't exactly happy to be at J.D. Stacy where Osterlund "sold" Dale to him, so the two of them came together and helped each other. I don't know how much you watched, but he was loyal through the good and the bad. He signed an extension for four years in 2000 after winning three races in '99. I say he would have kept driving even after 2003 as long as he was competitive. Honestly, he probably would have stayed with Childress even after that. At the time he died, however, he probably had more pull with GM than Childress did. He wouldn't have been the type to stroke around like Darrell Waltrip did at the end of his career. https://www.foxsports.com/nascar/story/dale-earnhardt-richard-childress-gamble-almost-broke-him-talladega-sprint-cup-102216 @197 Truth be known had Ken Schrader (Hendrick equipment) not blew up he would have gave Earnhardt all he wanted that day. Schrader won the pole, but had to start dead last where he wrecked in Happy Hour practice. He was on Earnhardt's bumper before the first caution came out. His pit crew had a bad stop and he restarted 20th. He worked his way back up in the top-5 before his engine expired on lap 58. Dale did indeed have a good car the day Josh, however, there was long green flag run of 142 laps (The last caution should have never been thrown that came out for Bodine's half spin on lap 193. He gathered it back up. Nascar threw the caution arguably very early.) in which Earnhardt lost a lot of the field maneuvering through traffic a lot better and getting on and off pit road much better during green flag stops (there was no pit road speed limit then). @198 I don't believe they were the top team, however, they weren't far off. Their driver a lot of the time made it look like they were the top team. Earnhardt took over for an independent driver's team and look what they did. Hendrick was able to spend more on wind tunnels and had more technology than Childress in the mid-90's. I also believe when Ernie Irvan about killed Dale at Talladega in '96 that he struggled a lot due to lingering neck, back, and shoulder pain in which he finally had surgery for ruptured disks after the 1999 season. His average finish in 1996 before the wreck was 8.5, and after it was 13. @199 He didn't necessarily save NASCAR like Magic and Bird saved the NBA during the 80's, but he did help take it to bigger heights I'm sure NASCAR never would have imagined. NASCAR was at its peak during his title runs until he died is why we talk about him. That and he was the best during NASCAR's most competitive era. @200 Obviously sarcastic, but a lot of truth to what you said, especially the shoe polishing lol jk 203.
