There weren't even 41 entries for the Daytona 500. However, I expect either the 52 or 66 team to withdraw, which they've done a few times in the past couple years if there were more than 40 cars at the track. 3. Wot posted: 05.26.2018 - 1:10 am Rate this comment: (0) (2) Keep single car qualifying in the past where it belongs 59. Not Sure posted: 05.26.2018 - 5:13 am Rate this comment: (0) (1) Single car qualifying was yet another thing NASCAR decided to "fix" that wasn't broken. Instead of the "boring" routine of seeing who can go fastest with two laps without messing up, now we have the predictable routine of group qualifying where teams can have unlimited attempts within each round (because every event NASCAR puts on must be cut into three) - so if they screw up during one run they can try again. This results in clear tiers showing up in the qualifying results week after week with the only wrinkle being if a car doesn't get through inspection. The only reason Kevin Harvick's average start isn't better than 10.2 is because he failed inspection twice, otherwise he has started in the top 10 when he's been able to participate. Before a screw up which cost a car a good starting position happened on the track, now that only happens in the inspection line. You know what this "enhancement" has that the other didn't? Strategy. Who the hell wants strategy to play a part during the part of the weekend that should be devoted to who is fastest? 60. Scott25 posted: 05.26.2018 - 7:04 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @59 the only strategy in single car qualifying was the luck of the draw. Really, though it doesn't make much of a difference whether it's single car qualifying or group qualifying, it doesn't matter much since the charter system came into being. That's the real problem here 61. Pollinracingpodcast posted: 05.26.2018 - 8:21 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Wonder if Rob Kauffman is having a coronary with the 7 making the race after his twitter comments last week? 62. Danish Pie posted: 05.26.2018 - 11:04 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Probably not, it's not like he had to qualify on time. Hell, he didn't even get a qualifying attempt. The 4 and 7 cars both failed inspections over and over and didn't get a crack at it. If there was just one other car on the track , the team doesn't make the cut, just based on that. And even if the 52 did attempt to qualify, and Yeley and the 7 team beat them, it's not like it would mean anything. If this was circa 2007 and he had to be faster than a dozen or so cars to make the race, that would be an accomplishment. But now, making the race is a more of a formality. 63. Pollinracingpodcast posted: 05.26.2018 - 11:04 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @58 and @59...I think the biggest issue is just one round of qualifying. I miss second round qualifying. In the past 3 weeks Joey Logano and Kevin Harvick were catching Kyle in points. Joey was completely average while Harvick crashed out super early, with with Kyle being the first driver to sweep ALL THREE stages in a race and win, that puts him at a 67 point lead, once again more than a full race distance (since max is 60). I'll say this, if Kyle can continue holding such a big lead in points and by homestead score the most points (I think he will honestly, finally) this year, it will solidify his legacy as a champion. All three of those things (railcam, cable cam, track cam) are bad ideas that add nothing of value to the telecast, but Fox's production team is uniquely enamored of them. @87 - they're not. They watch their monitors in the broadcast booth most of the time, so they see whatever the producer/director choose to show them. Thus when there's a change of camera, they have little idea of what came immediately beforehand. Every once in a while one of them will look out the window at the race, but mostly they're looking at the monitors. @94 - were you watching the same race? That kept a sense of suspense for the entire second half of the race, which made it well worth watching. Not a bad race, and the Sky-TV production was excellent (as was the total absense of commercials). Indy - a new car on a very hot and slick track caught several drivers out, and overall made passing harder than has been the norm. Still, some drivers figured out how to pass, and the result was not determined until the last few laps. Not a classic, but still entertaining to watch. I'll give ABC a B for production - no major errors, but too many commercials and announcer plugs. Coke 600 - what can you say about a race where one car ran away with the lead, and the rest of the field took about 10 laps after a restart to seperate themselves by a second or more per car? It pretty much sucked. In other words, same as last year's race, and most other races on the 1.5 mile tracks. It especially sucked by comparison with the All-Star race. On the TV side, we'll give it a D - too many gimmicks, too much of announcers talking to hear themselves talk, too little meaningful information conveyed. With the opportunity for a direct comparison with the Sky-TV broadcast it's startling to realize just how bad the Fox production is. 218. Jeff Gordon was critical of him late in the race last night when things don't go well). For instance in Harvick's case: He's 0 for 7 at Rockingham. Harvick can never say, "Hey I've won at every NASCAR Cup track I've raced at." If Harvick does win Pocono and Kentucky it will be cool I guess, but not a big deal. To be honest though if Harvick got to race in the equipment from 2001-2013 that Kyle has raced in his whole career (Hendrick and Gibbs) then I believe Harvick would already have the wins at Pocono and KY. To me it's like saying, well Kyle Busch has never won in the M&M's car at Daytona. If you're a Kyle Busch fan then you know he races the M&M car at the Daytona 500 and Interstate Batteries in the Summer 400 mile race. He's had great chances to win the D500 ('07, '08, '09, '16). In '09 he had the best car, but caught up in Jr. and Vickers crash. Many Dale Jr. fans to this day say that was even more pay back when Kyle intentionally dumped Jr. at the first Richmond race in Jr.'s first season ('08) with Hendrick. Kyle didn't like it that he was "moved out" for Jr. Jr. was having an outstanding season up until that point. I kind of think that was a career changing moment because it seemed like the wheels fell off the bus until 2014 for Jr, anyways that's another story. The Daytona 500 is more important for Kyle than what happened last night (Kyle's 400 mile win in '08 was controversial, but it counts so whatever). Kyle's (0 for 13) getting into that Dale Earnhardt (0 for 19), Buddy Baker (0 for 17), Darrell Waltrip (0 for 16) range before they finally won one. All had bad luck none more than Earnhardt though. Tony Stewart (0 for 17) never won that race, but was close and had the best car like Kyle had a few times. Kyle needs that Daytona 500 victory on his resume' that Harvick already has. All the greats can tell that have won it that it's a big load off their shoulders. Earnhardt would sometimes down play it by saying it would be "OK" if never won it, but he knew better and it showed by how emotional he was after he finally won it. It's more important than winning last night at Concord, more important than winning at Long Pond or Sparta. 222. Down the stretch 1990 was a great duel, but Martin only had three wins compared to the above mentioned. I think this could be a good thing for NASCAR. David Pearson has an interesting problem, because Texas World Speedway (aka College Station) appeared in the modern era of NASCAR, but he made 2 starts there in 1969 and 1971. So I'm afraid that even David Pearson failed to win at each modern era track he raced... But I have to agree that David Pearson was the first to win at every track (1976, after his first Riverside win) in years, when Texas World Speedway was out of the schedule. 216. What has Daytona 500 to do with winning at each track? Kyle does have a win at Daytona International Speedway, so it doesn't matter in this kind of stat. If you were talking about having a complete career (championship, win in all prestige races plus all non-point races), that's the only thing left, but it's a different stat. Plus, how can you be so sure Harvick will win those 3 races in one season? Yes, Pocono has 2 dates, but Kentucky and Charlotte Roval only one. And then it's like a triple sweep: One little mistake, you don't win one and you failed... See ya next year. And even if he really did it, then what? Just one bloody stat where Harvick is first... It really important like the Owners' title for Penske in Xfinity instead of a drivers' title. By the way - yes, NASCAR helped them. Unintentionally, of course... Then in 2017, Kyle did it as well after his Pocono win (he also won that All Star race at Charlotte), but only with the help of non-point races. And as far as only point races are concerned, he did it not even 24 hours ago properly and it will last for 15 races (and maybe for the whole season, if he really wins at Charlotte Roval). Trust me, Kyle Busch wasn't born to be second and especially not behind that cheating scumbag Harvick - that Talladega 2015 is his shadow for the rest of his life and still can't believe he wasn't immediately punished for manipulating the race... 226. JSPorts posted: 05.28.2018 - 12:21 pm Rate this comment: (1) (1) @225 that's a bad comparison, because it took Busch 29 starts to win at Charlotte. Pearson won at least 4 times on every track at which he started at least 29 races. Obviously it's impressive that Busch has won at every track, but I can guarantee Pearson would've won at least once if he had 29 starts at Texas World Speedway, or any other track where he didn't start a lot of races. Like it or not, Kyle was greatly aided in this category by coming into the sport at the right time, post-Rockingham in an era where the schedule changes almost never. One track has been added to the schedule in his career, while none have left the circuit. Yes, Kyle's won at 23 different tracks, but a guy like Pearson won at 37 tracks. Pearson raced in an era where it was easier to win at more tracks, because there was more schedule fluctuation; Busch raced in an era where it was easier to win at every track you've driven on, because there's very little schedule fluctuation. Comparing them in that regard is apples-to-oranges, but I guess whatever fits your skewed narrative is fine. As for your insults towards Harvick, that seems quite hypocritical coming from a Kyle Busch fan, one of the only guys who is a dirtier driver than Harvick. Harvick's move at Talladega in 2015 was indefensible, but how was it possibly any worse than what Busch did in the Texas truck race in 2011? Harvick manipulated the outcome of a race because he would've been knocked out of championship contention had he not done it. Kyle manipulated the outcome of a championship in a series he wasn't competing for points because he got upset. I don't like Busch or Harvick, but you have no room to criticize Kevin for anything like that. 228. Okay, but this stats isn't about some starts. That's just another variable you added into it. All you need to do is just win at least once everywhere. Every other win is a nice bonus, but it won't help you - 3 Daytona 500s won't give you at least one Coca-Cola 600 just like 4 Southern 500s won't give you at least one Daytona 500. How was it any worse? Kyle has never attempted to intentionally manipulate a race apart from Harvick... He was just really mad at Hornaday, because he didn't knew Chapman forced Hornaday into him (Kyle thought Hornaday started that incident). Plus, the fact that he wasn't running very well in previous races has also something to with it - a frustration. And he just went over the line... Of course, something like that isn't acceptable, but no one was seriously injured and Hornaday was already a 4-time champ, so he was just attempting to improve his achievement and get his 5th title. First, congrats to Kyle Busch on becoming the first driver in the seven-decade history of the sport to conquer every track on the circuit on which the circuit currently races at least once. I don't think many people realize just what an amazing achievement that is. Everyone else, including Dale Earnhardt, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Tony Stewart, and even the legends before them, never won at EVERY track on which the circuit competed on (in fact, Earnhardt missed on a number of them, including Watkins Glen, Loudon, and Riverside, CA). So that's an accomplishment that it might take a while to fully comprehend the magnitude of. As for the race itself, it was much like the 2016 race, which saw a performance by Martin Truex, Jr. that I called the greatest in the history of the sport, and Kyle Busch's performance last night is right up there with Truex's in 2016. Consider that, from 1967, when he set the record for laps led in the 600 at 335, Jim Paschal held that record for nearly 50 years, and yet, in two of the last three 600s, that number has been blown out of the water long before the finish. Part of that has to do with the fact that, with no sun out during the daytime portion of the race, the track conditions didn't change as much as they usually do, so there wasn't quite as much adjusting to do, compared to what the teams usually have to do. However, the fact that Kyle led 377 laps last night and Truex led 392 two years ago also confirms my long-held belief that the cars are simply going too fast to be able to race close to each other, and the fact that the rear spoiler is as short as it is, only makes the aero problem even worse. What they had for the All-Star Race the previous weekend (with a plate and much bigger rear spoiler) was better, because the cars could race closer together for a longer period of time, though I think they could have been given slightly more power than they had for that event, but not much more. After all, have the powers to be in NASCAR learned nothing over the past couple of decades? What's been proven is that MORE aerodynamics is what's needed to make the racing better, not less, particularly a bigger rear spoiler. The 1998 rules package proved that, and 2018 is proving to be a replay of 1998, just with different players. 1998 was the last time two drivers dominated the sport for one season like Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch have so far this season. That year, Jeff Gordon and Mark Martin combined to win 20 of that season's 33 races. This season, Harvick and Kyle Busch have combined to win nine of 13 races, and as was the case in '98, one of the two dominant drivers also won the All-Star Race (Martin in '98 and Harvick this year). 234. Not a big deal. I liked Earnhardt and like Harvick, and as a fan of Harvick I've never mentioned, "Happy only has to win at KY or Pocono to have a win at every track." And in most cases you DO have to have good equipment to win that race 90% of the time regardless of restrictor plates or not. Yes, the restrictor plates can bunch up the cars and make for close racing that results in crashes. Austin Dillon won where a lot of the better cars were already taken out this year. There's only been few "flukes" in that race most notably 1990, 2011, and possibly this year. Busch has had good cars to win that race and he hasn't done it yet. You mentioned that Rusty, Edwards, and Stewart were "fine", but not not great because their career isn't complete because of them not winning that race. I've heard Rusty speak several times how he wishes he could have that 1999 D500 race back again. Stewart regrets not blocking Newman in '08 instead of Kyle. Stewart had good chances in 2004-2006, but he blew those. Kyle needs the D500 and he knows it to have a complete career. Without winning it, this "I've won at every track I've raced on" is a mere after thought in historic eyes. It's a cloud that hangs over his career as well as the ones you mentioned. Earnhardt finally won that race in 1998, but before then when spoken of in NASCAR history it was said, "Arguably the best driver ever, 7-Time champion, but he's never won the Daytona 500." Nothing is more cowardly than what Kyle did to Hornaday in 2011, especially in a series where he doesn't race. It's one of the main reasons why that NASCAR made it rule that you had to race in your own series when it came to the last races. So, put it this way, the rules that NASCAR implemented last year to have only limited races in Xfinity and Trucks AND that you can't race in the Playoff races were essentially Kyle Busch rules. Let that sink in. 236. The same thing can happen to Kyle late in his career when a new track is added (let's say, Road America or Iowa for example) and he doesn't win it. If anything, Jeff Gordon did it first racing at tracks 5+ starts. Not Kyle. "Regarding Kyle's about-to-be-encumbered win from last night, it looks like there's at least one small but vocal group of NASCAR followers who are Kyle fanboys: the media." I'm not just talking about Roush Yates Engines. They were just an example. And a good one. Hendrick and Gibbs are right there as well with drivers that have good equipment that have won recently at Daytona and Talladega. LOL at "everyone has approximately the same chance" Yeah I really saw Timmy Hill, Sorenson, Gaulding, Peters, Whitt, Kennington, Gaughan and Gave having a great chance at winning dega 264. Roush/Yates engines have won 7 of the last 8 races at Talladega and 5 of the past 8 at Daytona. Those cars clearly have an advantage at the plate tracks. And the difference is even greater at non-plate tracks, where unless you drive one of about 15 cars, you really don't have a shot at a top 10 unless you get lucky. 265. Hamilton's team was strong on all plate tracks. So you're simply proving my point that the equipment is important. Just because a lot of those guys weren't great on non-plate tracks doesn't mean that driving for a good team on a plate track isn't an advantage. 269. Of course that not all 40 cars are equal, but it's not all about the equipment like on other tracks. Plus, it's not my fault that weaker teams and their drivers don't have such skills as Keselowski, Logano or Stenhouse... 270. Were talking the Cup Series only. 273. Rich posted: 12.15.2020 - 7:25 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Mike Joy, Darrell Waltrip and Jeff Gordon were the commentators.
