He was entered in the car a couple other times initially but ended up not driving it, so we'll see if this is actually a scheduled start for him or if he's just a placeholder. 3. The one race he drove it, he finished 25th, which is the 2nd-best finish ever for that team on a non-plate track. 5. The #7 was a joint effort between Cohen and Robinson, in fact several team members were fired from Premium Motorsports since they didn't want to work with Cohen 18. anon16 posted: 05.31.2018 - 9:06 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) That really sucks for Reed. So the Premium is abandoning the #55 for the #7 again? I don't quite understand that. I imagine the 55's assets will migrate over to that team, possibly because that's where the money is? Also glad to see Cope back after his wreck at Dover. Not to mention, they've found sponsorship for this race. Hope all goes well for them. I'm sure they are hoping for many retirees (and for them to not be one of those who do) so that they can compensate for their poor first outing. Also, go Bubba! 19. Anonymous posted: 06.01.2018 - 7:47 am Rate this comment: (1) (1) So what happened is that the new 7 team existed for 1 race and then got consolidated by Premium Motorsports, who are screwing over the 55 team and other employees. What, did the 7 team run out of money and ask Jay Robinson if he would buy the team? 21. Willlsome429 posted: 06.01.2018 - 9:17 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @20: Completely off base. John Cohen, owner of NY Racing (and formerly Team Xxxtreme Motorsports) had a car but no crew before Charlotte. He went over to Jay Robinson to try and get one of his Truck crews to work the 7 car. That led to a bunch of guys, most notably Brian Keselowski, getting fired. I believe the 7 worked Charlotte with a combo of the 15 and 49 crews from the CWTS. I would expect the same deal this weekend, though Yeley has dug through his mentions and refuted that theory, but not provided an explanation. And yes, the 55 will be running with Jeffrey Earnhardt, per here: https://theracingexperts.com/jeffrey-earnhardt-has-more-races-planned-with-premium-motorsports.php 22. Scott Bonin posted: 06.01.2018 - 9:18 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) So basically all 'NY Racing' is is John Cohen leasing cars, crews and drivers from other teams, making them mad, and then finding another random team. Going by the original crew chief and manufacturer on the 7, seems like it was out of the RWR camp. 23. Gray Gaulding's Distant Cousin posted: 06.01.2018 - 9:55 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) the Cohen #7 was being prepared by Premium. Jay asked some of the truck guys to help out (Mostly the #49). JSPorts posted: 06.02.2018 - 9:01 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I hope Aric can have a good run tomorrow, because he needs to build some momentum for the summer stretch, but he's not great at Pocono. In 11 starts there (all for RPM), he has a best finish of 18th in the 2nd race of 2012 and the 2nd race of 2015. His average finish is 27.5, he's crashed out 3 times and he's only led 2 laps. They're already quite a bit behind the other SHR cars, so maybe they can turn it around this weekend, but it will likely have to wait until Michigan. Almirola's got 0 top 5s, while his teammates have a total of 14. He's led only 1 lap all season, while his teammates have led 1337. 38. Meaning more off season time for the drivers and teams. Not necessarily downsizing the schedule but making the schedule be seven to eight months, instead of nine. I believe there could be five midweek races perhaps next year or the year after. He insinuated that he thought NASCAR would some weeks have two races a week. That they didn't need to fight with the NFL and that's true. Right now they don't need to "fight" with any other sport besides maybe baseball. I'd be all for that if they had five to seven races through the week during the season. @197 I was thinking the same thing. That would be the most ideal time to do it during March Madness. They could race a couple of races out west on Wednesday night (Texas, Vegas, and Phoenix could be good possibilities where they have lights). And then after that I think the ideal time would be during the summer. I could see the July 4th race being raced on a weekday like it used to be if it doesn't fall on a weekend for whatever particular year. They just don't need to be racing during the heart of the NFL season. Shorter seasons and fans will be craving more NASCAR just like fans do the NFL. Really as you mentioned it's to cut back on costs for the drivers, teams, sponsors, each series, time, travel, equipment, tires, etc. (you get the idea) and designed to give the drivers more time off during the "off-season" to spend time with family. 199. possum posted: 06.05.2018 - 4:32 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I'm not sure the teams would go for a mid-week race on the west coast. At one time it was common to take a couple of cars out and stay out west (back when Riverside was the first race of the season, and Ontario the last, teams would usually leave their car out west and run Riverside with a year-old car then sell it, and run the new year's car at Daytona), but now the big teams like to haul back & forth to Charlotte. That said, I do now think Vegas would be a good choice for a mid-week race, since it's a vacation destination and you'd have a better chance of a good crowd of folk who don't have to go to work the next day. Other than that I'm less and less seeing how a mid-week race could work, unless it's done as a "made for TV" event, where the track owner is compensated by NASCAR for low attendance. In that case, you could run it at any track with lights that's within a day's (or night's) haul of Charlotte. Realistically, tho, it's more likely NASCAR will eventually chop 6 races out of the schedule to avoid conflict with football (remember, in the southlands college ball is the big sport, so it's not just the NFL). We'll go back to what we had in NASCAR's glory days of the 70's, 80's, and early 90's, with 30 races per year. 200. I believe they should make the Texas race in August. They can still run Talladega in the fall on a Sunday. Fans still love going to Talladega. I could see having 5:00 Pacific/8:00 Eastern time races though on the west coast. I agree about Las Vegas. That would be the ideal place with as you said a vacation type deal. I believe it's a possibility if they do run a few midweek races on the west coast that the races could be minimized to 500k. Like at Vegas it would be 208 laps, Auto Club would be 156 laps. The race could be over in two hours. Phoenix could be 250 lap/400k. Sonoma could be moved to earlier in the year and be 300k (94 laps). 201. Corey posted: 06.05.2018 - 7:47 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @197 I don't its as much of a cost savings as you think. First teams would need to bring two haulers. I could be wrong but I don't think the current haulers can hold more then two cars. Add in the possibility of wrecks and the fact that NASCAR confiscates up to four cars after each race and you'll fine some teams are in need cars before the get to Vegas. If a driver happens to win the first two races, they'll only have one car. On top of all this, since the 3 tracks are different, teams will have to bring parts and pieces for three different styles of tracks. What you may find happen is that teams will send one hauler to California, that hauler will go back to Charlotte and prep for Las Vegas. A second hauler will go out to Phoenix mid-week. 202. Only Atlanta's "lowest since" ratings/viewership goes back to as recently as 2014. Lowest ever recorded ratings/viewership across the board? The other popular drivers who retired recently also had an effect, but none as big as Dale Jr. Those fans who were growing more disenchanted with NASCAR year-by-year stuck around to see those guys run their last races. Then they dropped it. Is this season rock-bottom for NASCAR's TV ratings or do they have more spicy "enhancements" up their sleeves to alienate even more of the remaining fan base? 213. George posted: 06.09.2018 - 11:47 am Rate this comment: (3) (0) Nobody doubts that NASCAR is in a long-term decline that, if anything, is accelerating. But do the Nielsen ratings really give an accurate picture anymore, especially when compared to past years? Don't those only measure viewership on "traditional" televisions, while these days the kewl kidz have other ways of watching NASCAR races (streaming on PCs or mobile devices) which are not being measured? Since the bottom line is always ad revenue, not simply eyeballs, it could mean that revenue is actually up since streaming is (or at least can be) far more ad-intrusive than even TV broadcasts, hard though it is to believe that commercials could be more frequent, poorly-timed or annoying than they are on Fox/FS1/NBC/NBCSN. As the gimmickification of NASCAR continues unabated -- new idea: ALL races should be restrictor plate races!1! -- the rate of decline will eventually reach warp speed and hopefully some enterprising owner (I always thought it would be Tony Stewart until NASCAR co-opted him) will break free and start a short track series free of gimmicks, and get back to real racing. 214. I'm guessing there are plenty of long-time figures in the sport (ditto current drivers) who detest many of the "enhancements" of the past 15 years, but none have the courage or stature to call bullshit. Do you really think Dale would approve of using restrictor plates at Charlotte or Michigan? Hell, he didn't like them at Daytona or Talladega and there is valid safety reason for them at those tracks. Keselowski and Mark Martin have recently said they don't want the plates outside of Daytona and Talladega, but only in a meek sense. They aren't loudly yelling bullshit which is what this requires. Once the plates are implemented at Michigan or elsewhere for non-safety reasons you aren't going to get rid of them and they will inevitably spread to other tracks. 215. Including a streaming audience of 51,000 viewers on Fox Sports GO ' up 28% from last year (40K) ' and Nielsen's new out-of-home measure, the race had 9.78 million across all platforms. That still ranks as its second-smallest audience ever." The streaming stuff is but a drop in the bucket right now. And he surely considers himself a courageous firebrand because he occasionally posts something slightly critical on Twitter (oooooooooh!) but it would be incredibly surprising if he or any other of today's crop of drivers told NASCAR to either shape up or shove off and then put his money where his mouth is. Tony Stewart had the best chance to be someone like that but it won't happen now, and the other big-name recently retired drivers are corporate ass-kissing NASCAR shills like Jeff Gordon or Earnhardt Jr. so forget about them. As far as drivers for a new series, start with some veterans who were pushed out the door (Edwards, Biffle, Kenseth) or who probably will be pretty soon (KuBu, Kahne), add a few kids who never got much of a chance to make it, but most importantly drop the crap and get back to RACING no matter who is behind the wheel. 217. However, there was a two week layoff between Michigan and Daytona and then a two week layoff from Daytona to the second Pocono race. @209 I was saying he won both races at Pocono. That helped the ratings because of his name and fan base. @210 I never saw him do either, so I'm not sure. But no for real smartass, people can say what they want, but fans quit watching when he died and fans that pulled against him quit watching. Gilliland is a top prospect for the best team in the sport, so he's going to make it to Cup. And Peters is too old to build a series around. Plus, a new series shouldn't be based on the drivers, it should be based on the cars and the racing so that when the drivers retire, the fans stay. That's another mistake NASCAR made; they focused all on the drivers without paying attention to the cars or the racing. 223. I love it much better due to the fact that when they go on breaks (meaning commericals on TV, for this it doesn't go to the ads rather they just show the drivers racing with no commentary until they return to talk some more). Kids now a days aren't also into cars like older generations. "Heck, if Robby Gordon could do it......â?¦" Because Robby isn't stupid. It's why Keselowski just skits the boundry of being critical. @213 - streaming, or "non-TV" audiences, is the popular excuse now-a-days for leaders in several sports, including NASCAR, to explain their decline in TV viewership. There's no evidence to support that idea, so I put it in the wishful thinking category. As for starting a new short track series - ever hear of the Southern Super Series? The Pro All Star Series? Northwest SLM? CARS? There's probably a dozen short track late model series scattered around the country; if there was an interest in watching it, the racing is already there. It's even got NASCAR involvement, between track ownership (Earnhardt Jr alone is part owner of 4 tracks, if I'm not mistaken) and car ownership. It's unlikely anyone could come up with a "new" short track series and magically make it hugely more successful. 228. I think that's what a lot of those series are lacking right now. Yes, Earnhardt owns some tracks, but he's a NASCAR guy and he's never leaving NASCAR. If someone jumped ship and went to a different series, that could change things. 229. possum posted: 06.10.2018 - 12:16 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @228 - well, you've hit on the exact problem with the idea. If there was national TV interest in a short track series, one of the existing series would be on national TV - the USAR Pro Cup came close, a few years ago, but failed. If there's not national TV interest in a short track series, then to challenge NASCAR you need some big tracks. Half the big tracks are owned by the same people as own NASCAR, so they're not available. The owners of the other tracks have been very clear they're not interested in challenging NASCAR (altho with Bruton Smith, you're never quit sure). Upshot is, there's really no opening for a series, new or otherwise, to challenge NASCAR. 230. George posted: 06.10.2018 - 12:30 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Not saying you're completely wrong here, but it would also be very helpful to have such a series with at least SOME recognizable and established driver names. And those lower series do not, so I'm not convinced the fact the CARS Tour (for example) has not exploded in popularity proves much. Isn't that what NASCAR establishment shills say about why Cup drivers are so "beneficial" in Xfinity & Trucks? A few big-name drivers are required at all times because otherwise nobody would care, nobody would watch, nobody would show up to the track and those series would die. Or so we're told. Combine good quality racing with some drivers people have heard of and some drivers who are up-and-coming and talented even if currently unknown, and we may have a winner here.
