A part time specialist would come in and get a low-end team a good finish. I guess those days are over in cup. Maybe Drissi might do something? I hope so. 3. All three of them have Cup experience at Sonoma, and ironically have all made four Monster Energy starts. Cody Ware has quietly and respectively amassed some decent road course finishes, and I would consider it his best skill set by far. I'm not saying he's gonna be contending for the win in his dads second car, obviously not. But don't be surprised to see a finish in the Top 25 or 27. Remember, he got Harmon's junkmobile a 23rd place lead lap finish at Mid-Ohio last year after lining up 13th on the final restart. Sidenote, Ware might have the best looking car in the field. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DgARdprXkAI3UjN?format=jpg&name=large Sponsor Update: 52 | Cody Ware | SBC Contractors / Bubba Burger 7. Wil posted: 06.19.2018 - 8:03 pm Rate this comment: (1) (1) A bit odd that Bayne's return to the 6 is at a road course. Although he sucks everywhere, he's particularly bad at races with right turns. I thought this week would be a good time for Jack to put a ringer in the 6 car, see what they could do in semi-decent equipment. 15. JSPorts posted: 06.19.2018 - 8:22 pm Rate this comment: (1) (1) Surprisingly, Bayne's average finish at road courses is tied for his 2nd-best out of any track type, with speedways. His best tracks statistically are short tracks. However, Trevor has only 1 road course top-10, a 9th at Watkins Glen in 2016. His best finish at Sonoma was 23rd in his debut there (2015.) 16. Canadianfan posted: 06.19.2018 - 10:17 pm Rate this comment: (1) (1) @14 That's what I was thinking a ringer like Billy Johnson ties to Roush and Ford. 17. JSPorts posted: 06.19.2018 - 10:19 pm Rate this comment: (2) (1) First of all, this was an AdvoCare sponsored race, so Bayne was going to drive the car regardless. Second, I think I'd honestly prefer Bayne over Johnson in a Cup car. Johnson's got 6 career NASCAR starts, none of which have been very impressive. I think Bayne being with the team in the past and his experience in this type of car makes him a better choice for this weekend. 18. Wil posted: 06.19.2018 - 10:50 pm Rate this comment: (1) (1) @15 Didn't expect that stat. The level of surprise that comes with that is more so a reflection on how poor Bayne is everywhere else than it is a sign that he's a good road racer. 19. Before that, if you weren't near the Top 10 or 12, it didn't hurt to bring a ringer in to try to get a win for your team. Now that a win gets you in if you are in the Top 30, it makes more sense to stick with one driver. It's a shame, because it was always fun to see which ringer could get a mid-pack team towards the front. And possibly show what that team is capable of. Maybe we'll see it again with the Charlotte Roval. The playoffs will have already started, so teams outside of the playoffs could definitely consider a ringer to see what they have. 23. Scott B posted: 06.21.2018 - 11:59 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) The trend was already moving away from Road Ringers compared to the 1990's and earlier, but yes, the playoff eligibility rules were the final nail in the coffin. Using more than 1 driver in a season is admitting that the team has given up hope of making it in on points or a win with their regular driver. Except in unusual circumstances (Roush bringing Matt Kenseth back part time), it doesn't make sense for a mid-level or better team to try it. 24. Scott B posted: 06.21.2018 - 12:06 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I miss the exception to the 4 car per team rule for pre-rookie drivers, too. It added a little variety to the entry lists. It wasn't used frequently, but I thought it served a good purpose by allowing teams to get a look at a young driver without committing to a full season. Gibbs, Stewart-Haas, or Hendrick might utilize this if the option still existed. 25. Sandy posted: 06.21.2018 - 8:46 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) @19 i don't know may not happen 26. Danish Pie posted: 06.22.2018 - 7:35 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @24 That rule only exists in spirit though, to be honest. Look at what Stewart-Haas is doing with Cole Custer, putting him in the 51 with a SHR prepared car every now and again, just entered under the usual Rick Ware banner. Like you alluded too, no new cars get added to the entry list because of it, (unless Ware were to field the 52 for that week) but nothing is stopping a Gibbs or a Hendrick from going to a team like StarCom, or Premium, or dare I say BK, and putting together a one race deal for a rookie with a chartered team. 27. RaceFanX posted: 06.22.2018 - 2:25 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Could this be the last Cup race in Sonoma, California while it's still in California? During the two weeks leading up to this race a ballot proposal was approved for California's upcoming November election that will ask voters wither the single state should be broken up into three separate states. If this vote were to pass and then was given approval by the U.S. Congress (something highly unlikely due to American politics on both sides of the aisle) the proposal states that it would become three new states; California (basically L.A. and surrounding counties including Monterrey), North California, and South California. Sonoma and San Francisco would both be part of North California if the campaign succeeds (which again is not likely). 28. Earlier this week, Larson responded to a fan question on Twitter about running the World of Outlaws, and he said he'd like to run full time in that series by the time he's 40. That got some NASCAR fans up in arms, but considering he's only 25 now and has been running Cup for five years, that's a 20-year career in the premier series. Larson himself said he tries to promote all racing series because everyone should enjoy racing no matter what level or formula it is. 32. Now it's Watkins Glen or bust. Come to think of it, most of the other Chevy teams (at least in 2018) only get 3 chances to make the playoffs aside from road courses -- Daytona twice and Talladega once, because bizarre things are more likely to happen in a plate race -- and 2 of those 3 are already behind them. They'll pretty much be under the same pressure in 2 weeks at Daytona as Allmendinger was at Sonoma today, perhaps even more because it's their last viable chance at a win (A.J. still has 1 more shot in August). 87. The racing at road courses is fine, it's just that I think the stages ruin the strategy, making it way too easy to pull a strategy move when you know exactly which lap the yellow will fly. That, plus I think drivers take it easy with the racing when they know they will get two guaranteed cautions, instead of pushing and shoving hard every lap. 176. possum posted: 06.24.2018 - 6:27 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) @74 - I'm reminded of the first IROC, where 3 of the races were held at the late, great Riverside course, in Porsche 911s, and several drivers found 2nd intending a 3rd to 4th shift. BTW, usually someone brings up Geoff Bodine being the first to use power steering in NASCAR. He wasn't, the first was Smokey Yunick back in the 60s, and predictably NASCAR promptly declared it forbidden by the rules. 20 years later when Bodine tried NASCAR had evidently forgotten that part of the rules. 184. possum posted: 06.24.2018 - 6:40 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) @169 - Mikey Waltrip is a clown, and an embarassment to whatever broadcasting team he's working with, whether it's Myers or the Xfinity or CTS broadcasts (he's also looking kinda puffy in the face recently...needs to start looking after his health). 185. possum posted: 06.24.2018 - 6:43 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @144 - yeah, I was astounded looking at the stands from the blimp shots. They have go karts that go between 45-50 mph and you get to race on an oval. The go kart track is across the road from DIS (trioval part). It's a lot of fun. And the go karts have NO power steering. It was a lot of fun and I hope one day I get to do it again. Someone videoed when they went there and put it on youtube. www.youtube.com/watch?v=09BkWqxmjBM 206. As much as Jimmie stays in shape and keeps himself fit he probably would be able to do it. He bikes a lot. Maybe not when he came into racing, but he probably could now. I'd say no one at Hendrick could (sorry #9 fans) besides Johnson, Hamlin and Busch might be able to at JGR, no on Logano and Blaney obviously, Bowyer probably could. Kurt Busch raced the last ten laps at Darlington in 2003 with no power steering which arguably set up the best finish of this century with Ricky Craven. No on Almirola, no on Stenica. Tony Stewart maybe, no on Jeff Gordon and Dale Jr at most tracks., maybe Kenseth, definitely Carl Edwards. 208. If it's the latter, I think most of today's drivers could adapt to it. Certainly any of the drivers who've run dirt cars (sprints or late models) like Kahne or Bowyer could. And since Blaney just ran half a race with failed power steering, there's no question he could run a whole race in a car designed without it. It's not so much that it takes more strength to turn the wheel without power steering (in a car designed without it) as it is you have to turn the wheel further, and since the wheel is wider, you're moving your hands and arms a lot more. He said it would be more difficult tracks at flatter tracks such as Loudon, Phoenix, and Martinsville. It might be easier with the new cars. He has had cars fail inspection more than any other crew chief since the dumb laser system came out, and overall his cars have flunked somewhere from 20-100 times. Chase Elliott better watch out because he'll suddenly be running outside the top-20 every week if he keeps overshadowing Chad's boy. The fitness regimens must be clearly overhyped or the drivers are that much weaker because Buddy Baker drove a more difficult to control car, had no power steering, and had no air conditioning. He sure as heck had no fitness regimen. 229. Ryan posted: 06.26.2018 - 9:45 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @228 I've always maintained that Chad Knaus is the biggest cheater in sports. He could probably write a book after he retires about all the times he got caught and DIDN'T get caught. That being said, hard to believe for this day, but drivers and teams from the past always tried to gain an edge. They actually embraced cheating. Watch NASCAR the decades of the 1970's and Darrell Watlrip talked about when they interviewed him then when he was in the Gatorade car. It was well known around the garage... "If you didn't get caught it wasn't cheating, or if you weren't trying to cheat, you weren't trying." Tony got caught with the magnets on his gas pedal. MWaltrip got caught with rocket/aviation fuel. Ernie Irvan said in his book "No Fear" that A.J. Foyt was beside his garage in the late 80's/early 90's at Daytona and when Ernie got around his car when it started up it brought tears to his eyes because of the funky gas smell. He said he thought it was some type of aviation fuel and he commented to Foyt about it and or course Foyt laughed about it. Although Chad has done his dirty deeds, it may raise few questions about Jimmie's legacy, but doesn't diminish it. Drivers now have a ventilation system to help with the heat. They did not then. When drivers got out of their car in the past it looked like they were working on an oil rig in the hot sun or a coal mine. 230. It was simply a counter to NASCAR bending the rules to help everyone else. NASCAR had Toyota's run a plate to restrict horsepower by 15 to make it "fair" for everyone else. I mean would you be happy if the NFL told the Patriots they were only allowed to play 10 players to make it fair? The Warriors are now only allowed to play with their 4 starters and that is all to make things fair? LeBron James is now only allowed to play 30 minutes a game to make it fair? Absolutely stupid. If Toyota had exact same size block as everyone else and everything fit into the rule book but they were pushing 950 horsepower to everyone else's 850 then so be it. Make the Ford and Chevy teams figure out how to get more horsepower, don't stack the rules against the best to make it fair for everyone. 232. Huh, Denny Hamlin or Matt Kenseth did fail post-race inspection for some major violation, but Kyle Busch, the most successful JGR driver ever, failed that inspection just 2 times (excluding lug nut issues that are just pit crew's mistake) and that was long time ago (2011 Pocono and 2009 Loudon). The reason? Height violations that are currently removed from Cup, but still present in Xfinity and Trucks. Otherwise no serious violation, always passed inspection without problems. So, please.
