Will be curious to see if the Premium #7 will run, and if Reed will in fact be the driver. Sorenson has unfortunately become the placeholder of Premium Motorsports, seemingly always appearing on the initial entry list before being exchanged for another driver later on. 3. #BowmanNation #TKNation #JRNation posted: 06.26.2018 - 10:21 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Poor reed hasn't run a race since the open... in the middle of may! 4. Bill France Jr showed a total lack of creativity with those two tracks, simply copying his rival's design (without giving credit, to boot). 8. Just my insight. 9. Corey posted: 06.26.2018 - 5:22 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Easy on Chicagoland. The designers had the forethought to curve the backstretch. Him causing the caution actually ended up helping him win the race because he pitted for tires after he spun and then there was a caution with about 25 laps to go. Most of the leaders pitted besides Harvick and he ended up making it on fuel and holding on to go back-to-back winning the first and second races at Chicago. 12. My guess would be they keep Letarte with Jr, they had good chemistry on the track and can hopefully transfer it to the booth. Letarte, Burton, and Rick Allen are all fish out of water and they have really hampered the race experience for viewers. They are head and shoulders worse than the Jerry Punch/Rusty Wallace experience when ESPN relaunched its coverage in 2007. The NBC three we've gotten the past 3 years are each so bad that it's almost uncomfortable. Hopefully Letarte and Jr have chemistry and Allen can relax a little bit and be looser. I like Jeff but he just isn't a broadcaster. Maybe he'd be good for an in-race analyst role similar to Larry Mac at FOX. 28. #BowmanNation #TKNation #JRNation posted: 06.28.2018 - 8:23 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I don't mind burton. I've struggled to say that for a few years as I liked Rick Allen in the truck series, and I've personally met Burton and think he's go great insight. However, I've never been able to even feel remotely relateable to Letarte. It's like he tries to turn a race into a science class. @33, 100% correct. I also think that speaks to just how amazing Benny was on tv. Because separately I never really enjoyed Bestwick or Wally, but Neth Benny they just clicked. Bestwick did his best work on MRN. However, as much as I liked DW in the first 10 years or so, I think he's really gone off a cliff in terms of broadcast enjoyment. But the Wally/BP duo in those years was great, IMO. The two of them always joked around but still kept it professional and fun for the fans. Always love Rick Allen, but I do think he's gotten away a little from what made his calls enjoyable. I think he tried to sound more professional when he jumped from calling Truck races to Cup on NBC, but it's hurt his style. Really looking forward to Dale Jr. the rest of this season with old crew chief Steve Letarte, I actually think those two will be great. I loved the 2017 Busch Clash on FOX when Dale Jr. joined the booth, thought he had a great broadcast that day and called it professionally while still adding some humor and genuine passion. 42. Unfortunately, the bright lights of Cup racing got to him and he's become a stuttering mess since. The rigidity, roboticness, and hesitancy with which Burton and Letarte speak hasn't helped any. @34 I'm a huge Burton fan, I think he's one of the most brilliant minds racing has ever seen. Sometimes he says things in the booth that are very astute. He just isn't a natural broadcaster and never will be. I think he would be excellent in the role that Larry Mac occupies for Fox. It's never been explained to me why Allen Bestwick and Wally aren't calling Nascar races. I don't understand it. 45. Burton has good insights, the kind of stuff a color man should have, but he just has no voice presence. Letarte, on the other hand, comes thru loud and clear, but it's like his mind switches off - when it's a technical question, his commentary is garbage - and of course obviously he knows this stuff, but he can't get it out, and rather than calm down and get his ducks in a row, he just says whatever. @35 - as others said, Bob, Ned, and Benny were the best, the gold standard other broadcasters should aspire to. And I agree, Dallenbach was underrated as a broadcaster. @41 - Fox's problem (and I blame all three of Mike, Larry, and Darryl) is that rather than the light comedy of BP & Dallenbach, the Fox crew descend into slapstick, and the "hey, look at me, I'm a clown" routine gets old quickly. 48. Wil posted: 06.29.2018 - 9:11 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @45 I think Bestwick is better than mike joy, but I still think Mike is a GREAT play by play commentator. Mike and Bestwick should be the two play by play guys. And while we're at it, Jeff Gordon is okay but not quite what I thought he would be. He's like a rich man's Burton-- is brilliant, can laugh and be lighter than Burton, but just doesn't have a natural broadcaster voice. 49. Two cars is enough - I don't need to see 28 cars side by side like we get at the plate tracks - I don't even care if the rest of the field is a lap down - but I want to see the front two guys trading the lead back and forth. I want to see second spending 10 laps making a pass, gaining 2 feet every lap. I want the result to be in question until, if not the last lap, at least the last 5 or 10 laps. What I don't want to see is 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th all neatly spaced out half a second apart because aero-push won't let them get any closer. I don't want to see everyone just circling waiting for a caution in the hope that'll shuffle the field. I don't want to see meaningless cautions just to pack the field up because they can't race together. Kentucky has a new asymmetric banking in 1/2 and 3/4. So only Kansas and Vegas are similar, Chicagoland and Kentucky more unique. It was unnecessary to act like that. Being a Harvick fan it's a shame that didn't happen with two laps to go instead of one because he would have won. If not for the Corey Lajoie caution I don't believe Harvick would have been caught. I thought that Larson should have kept the high line going into the first turn on the last lap and would have been better off staying behind Busch and getting him loose. He owed him one from Bristol. If roles would have been reversed you wouldn't have got an interview with Busch. Larson was classy afterwards, but had every right to boot Busch out of the way because of what happened at Bristol. He just didn't do it. He doesn't have that killer instinct mentality yet to do something like that. This type of race is what NASCAR needs to get fans back. Someone mentioned this is what it was like during the 80s and 90s and that's the truth. It was a shootout and Wild Wild West type deal. It was a great race most of the day, though. Probably the best race at Chicago for sure. The broadcasting was good and I agree that four is too many to be talking a lot. Burton must go. Rick Allen could never get a word in. Dale, Jr. and Letarte were a good team in 2014 and look like they will be in 2018. I look forward to Jr. discussing his tricks of the trade at Daytona next week. Almirola and Bowyer missed out on a good opportunity to win. Btw, I couldn't help but crack up at Ryan Newman for not being more courteous at the end of the race (he did Elliott the same way at Dover last year). Then, Stenhouse and Ku. Busch got together in front of Kyle and slowed him up which allowed Newman to go back around him and they almost made Kyle wreck. Then Stenhouse got in front of Larson's line, smh. Just get out of the way already. Kyle is right that Larson wouldn't have got back to him without the traffic. All in all it was a classic race. It's a shame that Kyle isn't more humble and act like a kid out there most of the time. 223. I think that kid has the talent to be unstoppable. I don't know if I really want to see it though because the second he wins too many races I'll have to hear the fans complain that he wins too much. I have no problem with what Larson or Busch did at the end of the race. The biggest issue I had at the end was the lapped cars of #17 and #41 clearly raced Larson a lot harder especially the #17. I think without that Larson just flat out drives by Busch without needing to bump him because he would have had plenty of time to race. 244. Ryan posted: 07.02.2018 - 9:41 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @242 Yes, at Sonoma Rodney Childress was faked out by the 78 team. At Michigan Harvick couldn't/didn't clear Bowyer off the restart before the rain came, although I believe had it been anyone else he would have moved up in front of them. At Charlotte, it's hard to say if he would have competed with Ky. Busch where the 18 dominated all night. At Texas Harvick got beat out of the pits by the 18 crew on the last stop and yesterday the same thing happened on the last stop. The 4 crew actually had a good stop at 13.3, but the 18 crew had a better stop of 12.9. There's a very good chance that a pit stop could ultimately decide the championship. And if that happens the 18 crew has an advantage. He didn't even finish in the top 10 in either stage yesterday, but his team made up several positions for him on pit road. That and his car got better once the cloud cover started to come in. JGR teams have been better at pit stops for several years now. Bobby Labonte (18 team) won the 2000 Southern 500 by not even leading a green flag lap. That aspect could be a product of better "coaching". Erik Jones made up several positions on pit road yesterday and had a quiet 6th place finish. Even Denny Hamlin recovered from his early spin to finish 7th. I'm not for sure Harvick would have beat the 18 or 42 anyways had he beat them out. However, I do believe he would have won the race had the race stayed green and without the Corey Lajoie caution when he had a three second lead. On another note, Kurt Busch was livid that Harvick passed him for the stage 2 victory. I can see him being upset that he led most of that stage and lost the stage, but it was no reason to basically call out Harvick for being a bad teammate. It's racing. I believe Harvick might be tired of playing Mr. Nice Guy like he did with Bowyer at Michigan. I know Harvick is closer with Bowyer than what he is with Ku. Busch, but I believe he realizes that every playoff point matters getting to Homestead. 246. Josh posted: 07.02.2018 - 10:37 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I watched the last lap again and I have a couple of comments on that, as well as a general comment about the Chicagoland track. 1) It sounded like you could hear the fans cheering in Turn 1 of the final lap, I think the NBC talking heads tried to make it seem like they were cheering the racing (I'm sure a few were), but I believe that they were cheering because they thought Larson was going to pass Kyle Busch and beat him. 2) It looks to me like heading into Turn 3, Kyle Larson didn't hug the apron as tightly as possible, he slid up just before Kyle Busch got his bumper. If Larson had hugged the apron tight, Kyle Busch may well have missed with the swipe and Larson would have held on. People bring up the old surfaces of Atlanta and Fontana, which I believe are the two oldest at 20+ years, but if I'm not mistaken Chicago's surface is 17 years old now, and with the harsh and at times brutal midwestern winters, it may be safe to say that Chicago's worn surface may be quite comparable to those first two. That combined with 90+ degree ambient temperatures and the green dropping at 1:30pm local time in July I think made for some better racing due to a lack of grip and therefore more vigilance required on the part of the drivers to get up and manhandle that wheel. I've thought for a long time that a simple way to make racing at these 1.5 and 2 mile tracks better, even if it's just 1% better, as long as we're stuck with them, is to run them all at 400 miles, during the day. I know Kansas has a night race, and I think Chicago even used to, but at night you don't get the tire falloff and the grip and handling issues that you get on a day race with a slicker race track. A 400-mile distance also usually places the duration right at a tidy 3-hour window (certainly not over 3.5 hours even if you get a few cautions) and it's 100 fewer miles that the drivers and teams can "bide their time"; they have to go for it for a bigger percentage of the race. 247. 34McDowellFan posted: 07.02.2018 - 10:37 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) We actually saw a good finish at Chicagoland, what universe are we in? 248.
