The track's September date, inherited from North Wilkesboro when that track was shuttered, in the playoffs has been moved to Las Vegas. 3. There will never be a NASCAR race in a long time where the entire racing field will be quick enough to win. All of the entries are "quality" because teams work hard to build cars that caused thousands of dollars, just hoping they can stay on pace. While we do have a handful of teams that are "quality" not all 36 chartered teams have shots of winning regularly. Going back to "quantity" the short fields are not a good sign at all, and should be worried about. Ever since Rob's charters, the small teams that can't afford such charters have been slowly hacked off. We used to have no problem getting 43 entries, and a handful would go home every race. Then we started having problems getting teams to arrive, and just shrank the field to 40 to hide it rather than try to fix it. Name a season in the last 20 years that struggled to fill its fields like 2018 has. 36 arrived at Atlanta. Not one uncharted car. Gee, I wonder where they went? I love this sport, and no matter what happens NASCAR will not lose me as a fan. But I cannot simply support these charters and what they've done and I don't know how anybody can. 19. The one that comes to mind for me is the summer 2010 event, when Kurt Busch moved Jimmie Johnson out of the way with less than 10 laps to go, then Jimmie returned the favor with a bump of his own with just a few laps left to win it. That was some good racing. 22. Corey posted: 07.17.2018 - 6:54 pm Rate this comment: (3) (0) @16 You're forgetting that some of the teams that did have charters have also collapsed. Roush lost one, Childress lost one, RPM lost one, FRR both gained and lost one. You can spout the idea that charters are the reason for smaller fields, but I see a lack of sponsorship as also being a big player and this is affecting the field from the top to the bottom. Keep in mind, the 48 doesn't have a sponsor for next season, and Hendrick has to find something for all 36 races. What is the possibility that Hendrick drops to three cars next season? It used to be that a team could have one primary that could cover the cost for the entire season. Then around the late 90's early 2000's some teams had secondary sponsor become primaries for a race or two. This has grown to what we see now, where only a handful of teams have a sponsor that can cover atleast 2/3's of a season. 23. Yeet posted: 07.17.2018 - 7:13 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Thank you all for the feedback, I guess I was mistaken. NASCAR brass didn't but when Kauffman got the big teams involved then NASCAR was out smarted and out man so they caved. The bigger teams are also afraid of the small fish becoming a big fish (see Barney Vissers team rise) and they want their own sand box and they have it. Sponsership is a problem now but let us also remember that sponsorship is the reason why racing is so expensive now. Back in the boom years so many companies came into sport that when the ship started too take on water said companies ran off leaving less money and more costs. Even in 2004 teams were very close too running out of money. And the teams are also responsible for their own demise. With all the tech they have brought into the sport no wonder costs have gone up. 26. It's also interesting that Kenseth is consistantly worse than Stenhouse. Granted Kenseth has never been a really great qualifier, but I'd still expect that in equal equipment he'd do better than Stenhouse. That tells me that there's either something wrong with the 6 team that they can't get a car setup (in which case Roush should have also seen it a long time back, and done something about it); or there is a flaw in both the Roush cars, which Stenhouse has learned to compensate for (more likely explanation). 47. George posted: 07.21.2018 - 12:33 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I don't necessarily think Truex or KyBu is going to win, though the odds heavily favor one of those two outcomes. This may be the golden opportunity to ensure that the fifth JGR Toyota -- the one nearly 100 points behind 16th place and therefore very unlikely to make the playoffs without a win -- to get that win with a little (or a lot of) help from his teammates. 51. JSPorts posted: 07.21.2018 - 12:55 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) If Kyle Busch doesn't win, I would be very surprised. JGR cars have won the last 4 races and 6 of the last 7. They've also won the last 2 at New Hampshire, as well as 5 of the last 6. That means it will either be Busch or Truex, but Busch has 3 NHMS wins compared to Truex's 0. Kyle's led more laps there than Martin has, and Kyle's having a better overall season. It all sets up very nicely for driver #18 on Sunday. 52. Mannoroth posted: 07.21.2018 - 1:24 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 51. It's nice to argument with those facts, but my experience is that when I find out something interesting, it usually comes to an end. A few examples - I wanted Larson to make it 4 in a row at Michigan, he failed. I wanted Kyle Busch to win at Richmond in 2013 to make it 5 straight spring Richmond races that he won, he failed. And (it may sound strange, because I don't like Harvick) I wanted Harvick to make it 4 in a row at Fontana earlier this season to help my point situation in our local guessing contest, he failed. So I'm trying not to look at those stats, because in more than 50 % of all cases, it always turns out differently. So I'd be pretty okay with Harvick winning his 6th race, so Kyle Busch and Truex could have a little motivation to run him down again. He's trying so hard to catch up to Kyle Busch in number of wins, but Kyle always wins as well and it's back where it was. The same with Matt Kenseth, but he's out of contention for wins, so Kyle ran away from him (those two were really close together since 2011 till 2017). 53. In an article last summer Dale Jr. said young guys coming into the sport are being paid 80-90% less than current stars are. NASCAR's gravy train is quickly drying up. It's why I think the next TV deals will be worth a fraction of what they currently are. There's a strong possibility the NASCAR of old will return - meaning there may be races you flat-out won't see on regular TV. They'll be streamed a la ESPN Plus or they'll be moved to PPV. On another note, count me in the group of people who wouldn't miss New Hampshire at all if it were removed from the schedule. 54. But Stenhouse has had 5 years to learn about whatever might be weird in Roush's cars, which could give him an advantage over Kenseth. And I have to assume that the cars come out of the fab shop basically identical. That means if there's a difference between them, it's due to the #6 crew. Could the crew get it wrong for so long without Roush doing something to correct it? I note that Roush has changed around crew chiefs for both the #6 and #17 a couple of times, without much difference in relative performance. Maybe one of the media will ask Kenseth the question, and we'll get an inside opinion. 74. Their team puts them in position to win. The 41, 9, 10, and 12 at times were capable of winning, but the 41 and 12 hurt itself with their pit road miscue with one another. Good call by the 4 team to pit a few laps earlier than Almirola, Elliott, and Kurt Busch with 75 laps to go. Harvick came out with the lead, even though the he would get passed by Almirola due to lap traffic. That was big to get him track position. Kyle's team put him in great position to win as well with their late pit stops. That was a great race down to the wire. Kyle knew his car wasn't as good as Harvick on the long run and was running Harvick's line to where he knew he would probably have to be bumped for Harvick to win. Harvick was obviously faster because he pulled away. I have to say... Being a fan of Harvick it was sweet seeing him get by Kyle like that where Kyle has done that to win several races. The end of Chicago and this race is what racing is all about. 247. joey2448 posted: 07.22.2018 - 7:44 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Kurt Busch starts on pole, leads 94 laps (the most) and looks to have a winning race in play, but loses it on the green-flag pit stop with just over 70 laps to go when he stopped short of his pit stall thinking the #12 was gonna leave. He lost time there and it cost him the lead and he could never recover, finishing eighth. Aric Almirola is the big hard-luck loser of the day, leading 42 laps and legitimately looking like the guy to beat late in the race with a fast car, but the yellow coming out with 45 to go led to a slow pit stop when everyone pitted, and that combined with a bad restart cost him any chance of winning his second Cup race. Still recovered for a third place. 248. Greg9ChaseFan posted: 07.22.2018 - 7:46 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 246, If you are a fan of one of them, of course you aren't sick of it haha. Nope-- they are 3 of the 4 (along with Larson) most skilled drivers in the sport right now, who happen to be driving for good teams. That is why you see the domination. Harvick's bump and run on Kyle was absolutely surgical. Actually a pretty decent day for Hendrick, with all 4 cars in the top 14 and Chase winning a stage. Ryan Newman had a great day and won me quite a bit of money in DraftKings. I may have win the entire tournament (4 fig prize) if Almirola had won. Man did Aric wheel it today. There were time when the Big 3 were the 4th, 5th, and 6th place cars and probably would have been without pit road problems or untimely cautions for the others. 259. Ryan posted: 07.22.2018 - 8:39 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I thought it was a very competitive race. Seven drivers led laps in double figures at NH for crying out loud. Chase Elliott made some good strides by winning a stage. Kurt Busch looked like he had the car to beat for a lot of the race and Almirola was great on long runs. It was unfortunate for Almirola a caution came out because he more than likely would have held Harvick off. Harvick wasn't no where near perfect all day but they put themselves in a position to win and they capitalized on it. That's what great ones do. @248 I definitely won't apologize for being a Harvick fan. I had to endure mediocrity with him in RCR's cars for years when he took over for Dale after Dale's tragic accident. It's hard to fathom that Harvick won four races in his "lame duck" year of 2013 with RCR. As a matter of fact it's hard to believe he won 23 races with RCR from 2001-2013 with the equipment they had. I had to endure Jimmie Johnson and Tony Stewart dominance from 2002-2013, so I'm thoroughly enjoying this year being a Harvick fan and have enjoyed the last few years since 2014. Last year was a transition year because of the manufacturer switch, but patience has persevered. He finally has six wins in a season and the 10 win mark is definitely obtainable. I always knew if he got in top equipment he would light up the NASCAR world and he has. I used to go back and forth with a former commenter on RR named DaleSrForeverFan (DSFF) that he needed to be in top equipment to really show what he had. DSFF did not believe he was that good and didn't deserve it. He even blasted Tony for hiring Kevin in 2013 stating it wouldn't work. The very next season he won the championship. I believe he hated that Harvick went in to Earnhardt's car and couldn't measure up to Earnhardt's racing and persona. Well, that was too much to ask. Hardly anyone could do that. Proud to be a Harvick fan and the way he has grown over the last few years. He's came along way since NASCAR parked him in 2002 at Martinsville. 260. There was a rumor in 2008 that he might leave RCR to go to Stewart-Haas for the 2009 year, but it didn't happen and he stayed with RCR. In 2010, he had a great year and was the most consistent driver throughout the whole year. Statistically, that was his best year at RCR, even though he won more races in three other seasons at RCR than he did in 2010. It's still hard to believe he led just 269 total laps in 2013 and won four races. Today was a throwback RCR "Closer" moment by leading just 12 laps and winning the race. In 2014, he led 2,137 laps and won five races. In 2015, he led almost 2,300 laps and won just three races with several runner-up finishes. Just one win in the season opener just like this year, and then nada for the rest of the year. There were weeks when absolutely no Chevys were even in the field. Maverick19: It's part pf the cyclical effect. The stars of the past are fading, while the new generation isn't fully "there" yet. So right around this point we usually have just a few really competitive drivers on a week-to-week basis. I would also extend your analysis further into the past. 1988 had a pretty clear divison between the really good cars of Elliott, Wallace and Earnhardt (who despite not winning at the same rate as the others, had the most lead laps), and the good but not great cars from Terry on back. '78 featured Cale, DW and Bobby winning 21 out of 30 (although that wasn't nearly as lopsided as '74. I'd love to see how much whining the comment section would have had then!) '68 was mostly a Petty-Pearson duel, with Cale guest starring on the big tracks. 1958 is reallly the only 8 year that didn't fit the pattern, as aside from Fireball's dominance of the 'event' races, no one really had a serious edge on a week-to-week basis (though the championship was a foregone conclusion with only one full-time driver). 281. Only 4 Chevy's attempted the Daytona 500, and only one of them made it, after 23 started the season-opener. For a few years in there, Buick was GM's #1 car, and all the top GM teams drove Buicks. 282. Totally different situation - plus, Kyle Busch did it just once apart from Harvick, who did it once first, was about to pass Kyle, but slowed down sooner, got behind him and gave him another one to make sure he will lose his momemtum and won't get back to him (probably just a fear that Kyle would retaliate and ruin his race). Kyle Busch was faster than Larson at Bristol, Larson did block him and he did use bump & run, but didn't ruin Larson's momentum that much and Larson could challenge Kyle again. 287. NASCAR has serious attendance issues. Butts in seats have declined by roughly 50% over the last decade. Tracks have torn out hundreds of thousands of seats. Talladega has fewer seats now than it did 30 years ago. 288. Danish Pie posted: 07.23.2018 - 12:04 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) UPDATE To the back: Ty Dillon | 13 | Pitted before green flag 289. Those 8 drivers include Jimmie Johnson, Kurt Busch, Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon, Ryan Newman, Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin and Matt Kenseth. Jeff Burton is the only remaining driver to have won it 4 times. The question is who will finally be the next to reach 4? 6 of the 8 drivers to have won it 3 times are still active. Meanwhile, this race is also Kevin's 6th win of the season, which is now highlighted as the most wins he's ever had in a season. His previous best were 5 wins in a single season, 2006 and his 2014 championship campaign. He has yet to win the most races in a single season and he's currently on top of that list in 2018. 292. NOTHING is more cowardly than to see that you're be ran down by your rival with 15 laps to go and start complaining about a little mist over the radio hoping NASCAR will throw a caution so that they would eventually call the race where it was late in the evening instead of letting everyone see the full race ran. That would have cheated the fans that had stayed there all day that endured the rain a great finish in which they got. It also would have cheated the fans watching on TV who pay. That's what you call a coward knowing your rival has a better car and AFRAID of racing him for the win. 293. possum posted: 07.23.2018 - 7:57 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @281 - correct. The reason for the body style switch is the first race was on the west coast (Riverside), and was run with 1980's cars, which had been left there since 1980's last race (Ontario). Then the new cars were run at Daytona. Back then all 4 GM brands (Chevy, Olds, Buick, Pontiac) competed in NASCAR, and GM corporate didn't exercise any control. So if Buick had a better car, GM didn't care if all the teams switched to it. After all, as Cale said, "same old Chevy engine under the hood". 294. Spen posted: 07.23.2018 - 8:37 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Exactly my point. They switched to Buick and/or Pontiac en masse precisely because the '81 Chevy wasn't as good of an option. That's not an option for GM teams these days, but it doesn't change the fact that Chevy is just about as bad now as it was then. 295. I don't care, because I live far away from any NASCAR track and it's still better to watch it easily on TV than on the track with all that noise, people etc. Plus, they race those races, when it's getting dark here, where I live, so I don't watch them live. Just will look at the results, finish and important moments from the race in the morning. 297. jpilat24fan posted: 07.24.2018 - 2:17 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) @268. It gives us hope for what he may be able to do at another flat track (like Phoenix) later on this year. Unfortunately, finding speed at Loudon doesn't mean a lot for finding speed at Pocono, Watkins Glen or Michigan, the upcoming tracks. Actually, Elliott said they weren't that fast at New Hampshire, they just weren't falling off as much as the other cars were. If they're able to copy that success elsewhere, they could be a force to be reckoned with. 299. It would hardly be the first time teams wouldn't be running the newest model, and if it made the teams more competitive until they got the new car ironed out, so much the better! Plus, it would be cool potentially seeing 2 different models from the same maufacturer on the track at the same time. 304. When Ford made the switch from its potent Thunderbird to the new Taurus in 1998 they actually were pretty lax about that, likely helped by the Taurus being more aerodynamic and designed as a Chevy Monte Carlo fighter. A few teams, right up to Roush, ran a T-Bird in the Daytona and Talladega races that years but none of the major teams ran one at any of the other tracks. These days with much more attention going that way I doubt we'll see it repeated. 305.
