The company cited the success of its one-off return at last year's Southern 500, where Cope himself drove a car for them with their throwback livery from 1995, with prompting its return to NASCAR to promote a new product now. 3. Gaulding goes from practicing the 15 two weeks ago when Chastain was in Iowa, to being on the 99. While Smithley goes from two races in StarCom's second entry, to behind the wheel of the second Premium entry. According to Carl Long's Facebook, the #66 is an effort between MBM and Rick Ware Racing. The car will have Rewards.com on board, and Timmy's Hill as the driver. This could mean that the 52 won't enter anymore races this year if this is more than a one race gig, since all of RWR's secondary equipment would more than likely go into working with the 66 team. 4. It appears at this point that the #7, #66, #96, and #99 are basically running full time, so that means we should continue to get full or almost full fields for the rest of the season. Also with a few other cars attempting a race here or there (#8 at Charlotte, #92 at Talladega, Hermie Sadler at Martinsville) we may even see a DNQ or 2. 7. I guess you can say I'm searching for anything that happens when the leader is passed on the last lap and something insane happens coming to the checkered. I need more from the 70's and 80's since I wasn't born yet during those eras, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I like Hemric but i think the RCR alliance in Cup is dead it's not beneficial when RCR has fallen to a mid pack team it's self. (No more road course races before then) I think the underwhelming names to replace Allmendinger is more of an indictment to Chevy's pipeline of young drivers than anything. Right now, JHN is probably the best driver Chevy has atm, but he most likely needs more seasoning. Hemric is probably the one who is closet to being "Cup ready", but his future doesn't appear to be more than mid-pack. Reddick is another talent who's been underwhelming to this point. One would argue the best young Chevy driver isn't really even a Chevy driver, Ross Chastain. He drives Chevys in Xfinity, but Toyota in Cup. (Though neither one is a factory backed team.) As we've seen time and time again though, sponsorship > talent in 2018 NASCAR. The ride would most likely at this point go to Hemric. Unless they can convince one of the kids from Toyota to take the ride. Which is possible due to the lack of rides available in the immediate future for Toyota. Curious to see how this plays out. 22. JSPorts posted: 08.10.2018 - 1:59 pm Rate this comment: (1) (1) Interesting that everyone assumes the driver replaced at JTG will be Allmendinger, when he's outrun his teammate this year. I believe Buescher is more likely to be released for several reasons. First, as I just mentioned, Allmendinger has run better than he has this year. Second, Allmendinger has a better Cup record. Third, the team has been with Allmendinger for a while and there's a loyalty there. Fourth, Allmendinger is more popular. Also, AJ likely has better name recognition because of his past open-wheel success. Finally, it seems like Kroger is more committed to Allmendinger than they are to Buescher, as evidenced by the company being on the hood of the 47 all year while the 37 switches nearly every race. Yes, they're Kroger companies, but I doubt they're funneling that much money into that team. The 37 has had several non-Kroger-related sponsors, and every time one of those pops up, it seems like there's plenty of real estate unsold on the 37 car. Preece is a more likely replacement than Hemric. He doesn't have a full-time Xfinity ride or a full-time sponsor to be able to get one in the near future, and the 37/47 are already sponsored rides, so he wouldn't have to bring money to the team. Hemric has South Point, and he's with RCR, who appears ready to promote him to Cup soon. JTG won't have an RCR alliance any more starting in 2019, so Richard couldn't farm Hemric out there for a couple seasons. Hemric's future is more secure, and a move like this would jeopardize that (much like what happened with Buescher.) Preece's future isn't mapped out at all past his part-time JGR ride this year. 25. He does wonders with small teams (Tri-Star at the Xfinity level in 2013 and Cup last year come to mind, plus he has mainly raced either Chevys or Toyotas exclusively). But I wouldn't be upset at all with either Hemric, Preece, or Chastain. I like all four of them. 27. Yeet posted: 08.10.2018 - 2:21 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @24 it would be absolutely atrocious if JTG would release Almendinger in my opinion, referencing the evidence you posted. But what I'm more interested in is how the #37 can just pull so many sponsors out of a hat. I mean he's sponsored by Slim Jim this race! It's pretty impressive for a team to be able to find so many sponsors in a series that (apparently) is losing sponsors fast. I wonder if it's because of Buescher they have found so much sponsor success. If so, wouldn't dropping him jeopardize that? If it wasn't a pain in the butt to afford, I'd suggest JTG runs a third car (#73 or #74 possibly) and put in one of the drivers people are listing in this comment section. I think it'd be a pretty strong effort. 28. JFM01 posted: 08.10.2018 - 2:48 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @3 I'm pretty sure this is a one race gig, since all the MBM guys are at Mid-Ohio. 29. JSPorts posted: 08.10.2018 - 3:17 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I think there are several options for the 6 next year. Here they are, in order from most to least likely. #1: Matt Kenseth stays, full-time. Wyndham & others sponsor. #2: Ryan Reed drives full-time with Lilly Diabetes or Lilly/Wyndham sponsorship. Kenseth either retires or goes part-time in a 3rd car. #3: Reed & Kenseth split the ride, with Wyndham sponsoring Kenseth & Lilly sponsoring Reed, or Kenseth splits with any other driver. #4: team shuts down #5: a driver other than Kenseth or Reed gets the full-time nod. This could be Buescher, another free agent, or an Xfinity driver. I don't think Chris will run the 6 car. He's not under contract with Roush anymore. If I were him, I'd be looking at Xfinity options, where he knows he could potentially win a race or two and be competitive for top 10s on a weekly basis. Most of those teams don't have things solidified for next year, so the chances of ending up on a good team (JRM/RCR/SHR/Penske, etc.) are higher. Bayne should be doing the same thing. The difference there is that Bayne has a built-in sponsor, so he can go wherever he wants. Buescher would need a team that already has some sponsorship, but he won't have to bring as much money as he would for a Cup ride. Of course, he could remain in the 37 and Allmendinger could get fired, or they could both stay (or they could both be gone, but I find that scenario unlikely.) There could also be some other Cup rides open that he could land, like the 96, 72, 15, 51 or 00. 95 and 23 could also be potential (though unlikely) landing spots if he's gone. Or FRM. Neither of their drivers are signed past 2018, or they could re-open their 3rd car (but they'd need sponsorship for that.) He didn't have a good year for them, but he did pick up the fog-shortened win, which is all anyone really remembers at this point, anyway. 32. NewJack posted: 08.10.2018 - 3:48 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @27 the 37 is usually sponsored by Kroger as well. Kroger will sometimes put their vendors on the car. With wraps being cheaper and quicker than paint, it allows them to customize it to tailor their companies more than before so Kroger's logo is less of a presence. I agree that Allmendinger's been faster than Buescher all year, but Allmendinger keeps ruining chances to run well with his own mistakes. And he hasn't shown any improvement in 5 years with JTG, at some point a change is needed. Buescher has shown improvement in qualifying at least. It's like firing a coach in ball sports when the players are the problem, but the change improves the team for whatever reason. AJ's not the problem with JTG, but a change might do both of them good. He's on his 4th CC in 5 years and you can only change so many crew chiefs. At some point the driver, deservedly or not, will be the next to go. 33. Scott B posted: 08.10.2018 - 5:13 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) #30 & #31, The thing with splitting the #6 ride is that it in essence says "we give up on making the playoffs" before the season even begins. So, I don't think that is likely for 2019. When Kenseth returned part-time this season, Bayne making the playoff cut was already enough of a longshot that it was worth the risk (the only realistic hope being a win in one of the remaining restrictor plate races). Sponsorship could win out, though, if two of the drivers each have a prospect that is only interested if their guy is in the seat. We certainly see it with the back marker teams in Cup already. If it happens with the #6, it could be the start of a trend toward mid-level teams splitting rides as well. 36. One of those 2 Chevys will be Alex Bowman, if top practice speeds & consistency are any indication. Bowman was the only Chevy to reach the top 10 in all 3 practice sessions and he qualified 10th. In 6 prior races at MIS, Bowman has finished in the top 25 exactly once so far (16th in June, 2018) but could be on target for better things tomorrow. 59. David posted: 08.11.2018 - 1:42 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @Matt I think you mean 15th-20th, not 20th-25th. I say that NOT because Custer is somehow guaranteed to come into the Cup series and perform better than expected, rather it is because there are only about 20 viable cars on the track in a typical Cup race, and the #41 is obviously one of them (in a plate race it's more like 40 cars capable of at least getting a top 10; otherwise it's 20 cars and no more). So even if Custer is at the bottom of that range more often than not, he's no worse than 20th on average. If anyone thinks he'd be *consistently* worse than 20th, that means he'll often be trailing a lot of the also-rans, and I don't see how the #41 could be that bad even if Danica Patrick returns to SHR and takes the wheel. William Byron is a rookie with similar overall experience to Custer, and his average finish is 19.4 at this time. But SHR Fords are much better than Hendrick Chevys so Custer has that advantage going for him. His average finish in 2019 would likely be around 17th IMO, and he might surprise and do a little better than that. 62. Kevin Colley posted: 08.11.2018 - 1:42 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I agree. I remember not participating on the forum during that period but just reading the comments sections and being amazed how people on this forum were posting such intelligent comments, better content and more intelligent then any of the "experts", on TV or radio. The content on the site was way better then any drivers or crew members would say on TV or radio, on average. Then all those people left, plus the site got way too mainstream as THE site to go for NASCAR statistics which ended up bringing in some of the people from the mainstream social media Twitter/Facebook/YouTube crowd who tend to pick fights with others. I don't mean to bury the new crowd. I would say 95% of them are fine. I don't mind that the glory years are gone because something that I feel that has been added that wasn't as prevalent during the 2009-2013 period was the tidbits that are now posted on old race comment sections. This community has so much knowledge about stuff that happened at these former races. It is good information for an offline racing league that one day I will finish the preparation for that is maybe my favorite hobby if I could get it started. 67. They were simply pointing out the inconsistency of the control tower. Cautions have been through before for the most inconsequential of reasons such as a hot dog wrapper or a car that is out of the groove. This time, they missed a large piece of debris and cost Ty Dillon a good run. 195. Danish Pie posted: 08.12.2018 - 7:25 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) @192 I don't expect them to be perfect 100% of the time, but in this case you rewatch the film and wonder how could they not see that. It's somewhat frustrating how we've seen cautions come out time and time again for tire rubber way down on the apron, but when a black box is lying in the middle of the track going into the turn, it remains unnoticed. I don't know how long it was lying there, but I'd have to assume at least 20 seconds. Read some race updates on Twitter saying that multiple drivers reported the debris before the caution came out. I understand officials aren't robots, but this was a pretty avoidable incident. 196. Perhaps they have heard so much of it over the last few years that they have "swallowed their whistle". Something has been on my mind for about three hours now and I'm clueless to how it happened. It is mind-boggling and unbelievable, but where in the world did the 3 car find its speed at today? I know the 3 and 31 qualified well, but I didn't expect Dillon to run that well for the race. When he came out in front of the 4 after a two tire stop and the 4 passed him I actually thought he was going to get Harvick loose and pass him back for a moment. Austin Dillon passed Kyle Busch under green flag conditions, let that sink in. Is this a sign of things to come or is it a flash in the pan? 198. For years we have gotten used to get debris cautions for napkins, plastic bottle caps, salt grains and invisible dark matter. Those have given the impression that the officiating of races is a complete joke. Most likely there were some other motivations than track safety. Then we have this new thing stage racing, and for some reason almost all the "debris" cautions cease to exists. Oh boy, what a coincidence. And now, at one of the fastest tracks we have a frigging CAR BATTERY on the middle of the racing line and nobody cares, at least not NASCAR officials. Good thing it was a battery as it disintegrated into dust and did not flew randomly somewhere. Sure, Ty Dillon hit the wall a ton but luckily we have a COT car and SAFER walls so you can wreck like that and walk away... Maybe they should drug test the whole NASCAR, which as a sanctioning body is a joke. 205. Sector posted: 08.13.2018 - 3:07 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) If things continue as they are... It easily outranked Indianapolis after the initial novelty wore off of racing there. I don't know if the TV ratings reflected that enthusiasm about Bristol, but I recall that the only way we could ever get tickets was to find a scalper who hopefully wouldn't gouge us too much.
