This would also be the first non-restrictor plate race to have a DNQ since this race last year, when Timmy Hill couldn't make the grid. Jesse Little attempting his second Cup start, this time in the Gaunt Brothers 96. 3. The open teams always make less money than the chartered teams. They're not paying just so teams show up, I think if NASCAR had it their way, there would only be 36 cars on the track each week. 9. We don't need a playoff. Every team faces one another every single week. 20. Anthony posted: 08.15.2018 - 8:19 am Rate this comment: (2) (0) @18 people even complained, the sports fans who weren't even NASCAR fans, didn't like the idea that Bill Elliott won 11 races in 1985 & lost a championship to Darrell Waltrip, who had 8 less wins. Terry Labonte, 1996, wins a championship with 2 wins to Gordon's 10. They thought that NASCAR didn't get it right. But I tell them it isn't that, NASCAR doesn't award championships back then between 1975 to 2003, based on most wins, it's whoever scores the most points the whole season. And you're right, NASCAR is a sport, but it can't be treated like a stick-and-ball sport. 21. It seems that's what they've done. If BJ does make the race I hope he does something 'Pulp Fiction' related in driver intros. In honor of what will most likely be the last race under the BK Racing banner, Blake Jones will have the names of all of the teams current members on the quarterpanels, as a thank you to all the mechanics and everyone for keeping the team going. If this is the official end for BK, even though it's been a long time coming, it's still tough to see a team going away after a half a decade run in the sport. Through all of the shenanigans and shady activity the team has been involved in for the majority of it's existence, it has to be pointed out the drivers that got their first chance at the Cup level with BK: Alex Bowman, Ryan Truex, Jeb Burton, Matt DiBenedetto, Joey Gase and a handful of others started out running for Ron Devine. Though he obviously didn't have a major impact on the sport, there are a handful of drivers who have Devine to thank for their foray into Cup, and have exceeded expectations with and since leaving BK. It would be awesome to see Blake Jones notch a Top 20, Top 25 finish to put a good run into what is most likely the last hoorah, but in reality, the fact the team has entered every race of 2018 to this point is already an unexpected accomplishment. 41. If you track the ratings for many races, you will likely find that 2000-2002 was the tops for many of them. I find it somewhat incredible that 16-18 years removed from that peak, we apparently still haven't hit rock bottom yet. As some people have said on here, leadership is one of the biggest problems with NASCAR right now. It's not a coincidence that Brian France took over NASCAR in the mid 2000s which is also when the sport started to decline. He's made so many bad decisions that I can't even count off the top of my head everything he has done wrong. With new leadership I am fully confident the sport can turn around. As far as the car count is concerned, the Charter system is a major reason why the car count is down as much as it is. If open teams didn't make only a fraction of what the charter teams make in prize money, there would be many more cars at the track every weekend. NASCAR needs the Charter system renegotiated as soon as possible in my opinion. With fresh leadership, a better business model, more short tracks & road courses, lower competition costs and lower ticket prices, I believe NASCAR can get back on top. 290. Mainly because the only way for someone to do it is to add a race to the schedule (which won't happen) or for one of the current tracks to give up a date. And SMI and ISC won't give up a date unless it's for another track they own. So, if a new track were to be added, I'd guess it would be at the expense of Pocono or Dover. The Gen-6 car and even the Gen 5 COT hurt the on-track product from 2008 onwards. These cars have become so aero dependent with all the fancy engineering. The Gen-4 car was a much more simple design and didn't have all the fancy stuff like splitters, wings and all that other junk that came with the Gen 5 car in 2008. Luckily NASCAR ditched the wing and 2010. I remember in the Gen-4 car days that drivers could actually race around each other on mile and a half tracks and make slingshot passes. They also could get it nice boost of momentum on corner exit and get side-by-side with the car in front of them. Drivers even used to be able to help one another on mile and a half tracks by giving the car in front of them a little bit of a draft to get past another car. Nowadays you couldn't even dream about doing that because if you get too close to somebody's back bumper the front of your car stalls out and you lose 5-10 car lengths. Were the intermediate track races always good with the Gen 4 car? No. However, most of them were at least half way decent which is something you can't say about very many intermediate track races today. I've said for about the last 5 years that the level of engineering in NASCAR needs to be taken down big time. 10-15 years ago, I don't remember drivers in their post race interviews always talking about how track position was key and how hard it was to pass. You hear that almost every week in today's NASCAR. Talking about track position and clean air all the time has hurt the quality of racing and hurt the sport as a whole. Getting back to the basics and a simpler designed car with less engineering influence can do wonders for the sport!!! 299. 1995 Subaru WRX STi posted: 08.23.2018 - 9:24 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) "I remember in the Gen-4 car days that drivers could actually race around each other on mile and a half tracks and make slingshot passes." I guess they looked halfway decent once they got rid of the huge splitter and wing. @301 the Gen 4 cars were great on the plate tracks. I think it was because of the gear rule keeping them in the 7K RPM range. Sounded fantastic. Remember too that they bounced around more because this was prior to many tracks getting the itch to repave. I will never tire of watching old races of cars going down the backstretch at Charlotte bouncing over the humpy bump or going into turn 1 at Talladega going over the rough patch down low. Or pre-repave Darlington. The best one of all. 304. If 2019 is Kurt's final year like some rumors have said it would be fitting if his final win came at the track I remember watching him dominate at when I started watching. 307. It was literally flag to flag the whole race with awesome stage finishes, and many battles not just for the lead. During the last week without Nascar, and your looking for some exciting old races. I'd give this a watch, you won't be disappointed. 309. SweetRich posted: 07.06.2020 - 11:25 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The final career race for BK Racing. 310.
