The event is as popular as ever with teams again rolling out a wide variety of classic paint schemes honoring all kinds of past racers. 2. This race sees Deere reuniting with Roush to sponsor its #17 Ford with Ricky Stenhouse, Jr.; bringing back the same paint scheme featuring the company's iconic shades of green and yellow that Little made famous in both Busch and Cup competition from 1996 to 2000. 3. The #66 and the #99 have great throwbacks so it would be horrible if either of them missed the show. 5. The company made snowmobiles from 1972 to 1984 and it raced them too, finding success in cross-country events. 6. The current double file restart system is one of the only great changes NASCAR has made in the last 15 years. Dibenedetto wins the throwback weekend for me since he's using my personal favourite paint scheme of all time, Jeff Burton's 2000 Exide Ford. 18. A.J. posted: 08.28.2018 - 7:29 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I'd have no gripe if they abolished the idiotic "lucky dog" rule and kept the lap down cars a lap down. But NASCAR doesn't want that. When a top driver loses a lap, NASCAR wants it to be as easy as possible for him to recover. In the olden days whoever was leading at the time of a caution would decide to either race back to the line and keep the lap-downers that way, or ease up and let some of them race past him to get their lap back. IOW it was totally at the driver's discretion, with some help from his spotter telling him who would be affected. In that case, why not just have the driver leading the race decide (and state over the radio) how many cars he wants to let get by him? It gives exactly the same result as before, but without all of the quivering with fear that there was when cars raced back to the line to take the yellow. 20. Yeet #PrayForWickens posted: 08.28.2018 - 7:30 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) They should have Ned Jarrett and Ken Squier announce a section of the race like last year, that part was awesome. David posted: 08.28.2018 - 7:40 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @AJ: In this age of transponders and knowing exactly where every car is on the track at all times, they could modify the rule to permit all lap-down cars within a certain distance behind the leader get a lap back. But yes, do away with the wavearounds. I understand NASCAR's desire to micromanage competition and try to get as many cars as possible onto the lead lap, but at least make them earn it to some degree. It'll never happen because they surely don't want to return to those glory days of yesteryear where you could frequently count the number of lead-laps cars at the end of a race on one hand. Sometimes on one finger. 23. Matt posted: 08.28.2018 - 7:40 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @20, I hope they do. They've done it every year so I can't imagine they change for this year. 24. JSPorts posted: 08.28.2018 - 7:43 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I'd much rather have wavearounds than a lucky dog, if we had to choose between the two. The wave around cars are in front of the leader, so they should join up with the back of the field before the green. The only alternatives are to put slow cars in front of the leaders (which doesn't seem like a great idea, for those drivers to have to deal with traffic) or to send the would-be wavearounds back behind the leader, which doesn't seem very fair to those drivers, whose teams made strategy calls to try to get themselves back on the lead lap. Most of the time, it doesn't even work out in their favor, but they should still have that opportunity. 25. Tarheel posted: 08.28.2018 - 9:00 pm Rate this comment: (1) (1) Want a real throwback Southern 500? No stage cautions, and run it on Sunday afternoon when the track is practically melting and slick as a banana peel. 26. Corey posted: 08.28.2018 - 9:38 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I have to agree with JSPorts. Keep the wave-arounds. The last time the leaders started behind lapped traffic, a 20 car pile-up occurred at Dover. It's better then what F1 has where, everyone a lap down can get a lap back regardless of physical on-track position. @19 I disagree. The last thing I want is more politics to enter the sport. We already saw that happening back during the tandem drafting days and it really hurts the integrity of the race. As far as paint schemes go, I'll take Stenhouse's John Deere scheme. Even, Brad's looks nice. Larson's however, when the sponsor and the colors are not the same, can you really call it a throwback? 27. ShinyMew151 posted: 08.28.2018 - 9:49 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) I went with Lucky Dog because I thought it was the more liked between the two, I see it's not now 28. Anonymous posted: 08.28.2018 - 10:53 pm Rate this comment: (2) (4) I can't understand why people are defending the wavearound. Out of all the bad things NASCAR has done in the past 15 years, the wavearound to me is by far the worst. It is certainly not "fair" that teams are given a free lap for no reason other than that they chose to not make a pit stop. And it's not even really about strategy at all; it's simply a matter of looking to see if there are any lead-lap cars in front of you, and choosing not to pit if there are not. If you want to offer lapped cars some incentive to not make pit stops for some reason, that's fine. Let cars between the pace car and the leader line up behind the first few rows(maybe slide them in between 6th and 7th or something like that), or let them start single-file a second or two in front of the leader. But giving them a whole lap is absolutely ludicrous. 29. Ultimate Warrior #18 posted: 08.28.2018 - 11:39 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) I'll take the wave around over the lucky dog i use to hate seeing cars on the tail end of the lead lap restart ahead of the leader it often caused crashes such as Dover 04. I would limit the combined total of wave around/ Lucky dogs a team can get in a race to 3. 30. Corey posted: 08.29.2018 - 12:14 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) @28 You're are forgetting the the wave around is a risk-reward decision and that the possibility of it backfiring is very real. Those cars will be on older tires and will have to put much sooner then the leaders. Unless another caution comes out, those cars may find themselves even further behind then had they pitted. As far as your suggestion of putting lapped cars between 6th and 7th. Horrible idea. Put lapped cars on old tires in the middle of leaders with fresh tires at Darlington this weekend and I gaurentee you will have a junkyard in turn 1. By the way the Lucky dog is the perfect definition of giving a team a lap back for no reason. 33. joey2448 posted: 08.29.2018 - 12:18 am Rate this comment: (2) (0) A couple notes of mine about this weekend's throwback cars: #00 Landon Cassill (The Bobby Allison Miller High Life car!) #1 Jamie McMurray (Gold looks great on a car) #2 Brad Keselowski (One of my favorites this weekend, the Penske teams always do throwback weekend right) #4 Kevin Harvick (Beautiful Busch beer scheme inspired by the can design from 1996) #6 Matt Kenseth (Oscar Meyer is back on the car after serving as an associate sponsor for Roush in the early 2000's) #9 Chase Elliott (A touching tribute to Chase's late cousin Casey Elliott, who died from cancer when Chase was only months old) #11 Denny Hamlin (a tribute to Denny's first racecar ever, a Mini Stock he drove in 1997 at Langley and Southside speedways in Virginia) #12 Ryan Blaney (his father Dave finished third with that scheme in 2003, behind the famous Craven-Busch finish) #13 Ty Dillon (a throwback to Germain Racing's first Cup car in 2009) #14 Clint Bowyer (throwing it back to Ned Jarrett's 14-lap victory in 1965, including the '358 cubic inch' detailing) #17 Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (Chad Little and John Deere) #18 Kyle Busch (throwing it back to a driver that had a similar driving style, 'Swervin' Irvan') #20 Erik Jones (a design inspired by Jones' spotter Rick Carelli, when he drove a REMAX-sponsored truck from 1996 to 1999) #21 Paul Menard (like Penske, the Wood Bros. always hit the nail on the head with throwback weekend) #22 Joey Logano (one of the favorites this weekend, the Steve Park Pennzoil ride) #24 William Byron (Jeff Gordon and the rainbow warriors. Say no more) #31 Ryan Newman (Neil Bonnett 1993 throwback. Remember Neil flipping into the Talladega tri-oval fencing?) #32 Matt DiBenedetto (Another one of my faves this weekend, the Jeff Burton Exide car) #37 Chris Buescher (a throwback to the Bush's Beans can design of the '30s) #38 David Ragan (a tribute to Dale Jarrett's first Cup win at Michigan in 1991, when he beat Davey Allison in a photo finish driving for the Wood Bros.) #41 Kurt Busch (throwing it back to himself when he lost by a record .002 seconds to Ricky Craven in 2003. I've always loved Kurt's 2003 silver and red scheme and thought it underrated and often forgotten by fans) #42 Kyle Larson (I'm not a particularly big fan of this scheme because while it's a throwback to Davey Allison's late '80s cars, the colors are wrong, because DC Solar wanted the blue stripes on the side instead of the red???) #43 Bubba Wallace (The King's cars are always a classic) #47 A.J. Allmendinger (a tribute to JTG Daugherty Racing's first Cup car in the 1998 Busch series, when Robert Presley drove the No. 59 car) #48 Jimmie Johnson (a throwback all the way to 2012, wow! Haha, when Jimmie won the 500 for Hendrick's 200th win as an owner) #66 Timmy Hill (honoring Hall of Famer Darrell Waltrip's Route 66 Fords from 1999-2000, his last few years before retiring) #88 Alex Bowman (Llumar sponsor, not sure what the throwback is) #95 Kasey Kahne (Looks good, supposed to resemble Kahne's 2006 Dodge cars from early in his career. Won a lot of races in that scheme) #96 Jeffrey Earnhardt (honoring grandfather Dale Earnhardt's 1978 Cardinal Tractor Ford) #99 Derrike Cope (throwback to himself again, haha! Cope's 1993 Bojangles scheme) 34. Corey posted: 08.29.2018 - 12:47 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) As far as I'm aware, the 6, 10, 19, 78, and 88 are not doing throwbacks. There are plenty of other past champions they could have paid tribute to where the colors (white, black, blue) would have fit. Like Lee Petty's 42! Not many people have paid tribute to the father of 'the King' in the last 4 years. And Larson isn't the first to do this. Erik Jones paid tribute to Allison in the 2016 Xfinity event at Darlington, and everything about that Reser's Toyota worked! 36. In the inaugural Truck Series season, Scott Lagasse drove the Hendrick #24 DuPont Refinishes Truck. All three of them are stronger in that format (without the time pressure of commenting on live action). @87 - more the other way around. The design of Darlington was more-or-less by accident (the expectation was cars would race on the flat apron, not the banked portion). But by virtue of being NASCAR's first big track, stock car design evolved to suit Darlington. @37 - you're exactly right. NASCAR went for decades racing back to the line, and there never was a problem. And since the rule change, we've had any number of cars spin in front of the field (even in turn 1 at Watkins Glen, which is pretty much blind to approaching drivers) - and in every case the field avoided the spun car with no problems. The no racing to the yellow rule was a panicked reaction to a problem which didn't actually exist. But, all that said, it's one of the lesser of NASCAR's bad decisions in the past 20 odd years. 94. jensenators posted: 09.02.2018 - 6:29 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) According to MRN, we are in a 30 minute hold because there was a lightning strike 8 miles from the speedway. 95. joey2448 posted: 09.02.2018 - 6:32 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) There are seven Chevy Camaros pacing the field before the race starts, all from different decades and different generations. Caveat: In small doses. I'd take Jr over DW any day. Jr at least doesn't set out to be as annoying as possible and gimmiky as possible. In other words: There's still hope for Jr to find his feet more as an announcer....but I still say KP shouldn't be anywhere near a booth and headset. Period. Nor should DW or Hammond or Mikey Waltrip either. Put them on the pre race, okay, but keep them outta the booth. Or put them on the web videos, okay, that's fine but don't put people in the booth who don't belong there. Looking at you, DW, Larry Mac, Letarte, Hammond and quite a few others over the years. That being said, I'm still taking announcers who are easy to listen to, know their stuf and know when to shut up and let a race tell its own story rather than yapping consistently. Also, Bestwick was good, yes, but.....having heard him call football games, I think he just naturally fits better in that role. Though speaking of, Charlie Jones called Indycar races and keith Jackson called a few stock car races, too....the difference was with Keith, he had a good TV voice, you could listen and he was easy to listen to. Same for Charlie Jones as well...though for a discussion of worst NASCAR announcers, Jim Lampley has to be on the list, Jim McKay too, come to think of it. Also Rick Benjamin in his early years is hovering around the line between good/bad. Oh and also, Rick Allen neeeds to go back to covering trucks/NXS I feel, he seemed more relaxed and more able to have fun there. Though, if it were possible to bring them back, I'll take Squier, Yates and Evans in the booth with Glen Jarrett on pit road. Or Eli/Buddy/Niel in the booth. The team initially planned to run the solid Petty Blue STP paint scheme Richard Petty won with at Riverside back in 1972 in the very first race of that legendary sponsorship and both practiced and qualified with that look. Overnight the team decided to rewrap the car into King Richard's regular mid-1970s dayglo red and Petty Blue scheme he made so famous. The change is somewhat fitting. The King's all-blue Riverside car was originally the result of the STP deal coming together late and they didn't have enough time to change it to a full STP scheme. It was heartbreaking to see Brad lose that race after he had dominated most of that race in the Bobby Allison early 1980's Miller High Life paint scheme. Brad got beat off pit road by Carl Edwards late in that race. It's so hard to pass at Darlington in the first 15-20 laps off the start of the race or a restart. Once the tires start falling off more in a run then that's when you see more passing. Maybe Larson can win this race soon. He deserved it tonight. I hate the stage cautions for obvious reasons, but I really hate that they ate up 12 laps of competition tonight. I really don't believe they should count towards the race if they're going to have them. It's hard to believe that Brad had not won a crown jewel yet (although I believe at least two of his Talladega wins should count as Crown Jewels). He's had several chances and opportunities. At Daytona he's had some good cars, but just couldn't get it done because of some untimely wrecks. He had a bad restart at Indy last year, lost this race in 2015 after dominating, and won at Charlotte but not the 600. Him winning tonight was one of the most anticipated moments in the sport. A Cup champion with 24 wins and no major wins with the caliber of a driver Brad is was hard to fathom. However, eventually if you keep putting yourself in position to win one it's going to go your way. It was much needed. And he couldn't have got his first win of the year at a better time (right before playoffs) or at a better place than Darlington (although he may say Michigan) in an awesome paint scheme. Maybe it will silence some of his critics thinking it might be time for someone else to get in that ride. I still believe he has a lot to offer. Tonight, he can celebrate with as much MGD as possible after an unforeseen sweep this weekend. 249. I'm sure he tells people and sponsors, "I beat Dale Earnhardt head to head in the Daytona 500." He basically has lived off that freak luck win for 28 years now. He's never going to win again. He should have been off the track when DW retired. He came down on Truex at one point in the race where Truex's closing rate on him was so fast that Cope couldn't tell if he would go high or low and they almost got together as a result of it. I don't how many times I counted that Cope would ruin some of the lead lap cars entry into the turns by just being in the way. It just isn't good for racing. It's like the 40 car yesterday in the Xfinity race. You're 56 laps down with 50 to go and you're so slow that you ruin a good race between the 42 and the 98. Really? You have no chance to win or even learn anything at that rate of speed. Why was he still on the track? The money can't be that much better to gain one or two possible spots. Just get off the track already. @252 "Well, the first Talladega race is still the former Winston 500, just with the different race name. From 1998-2000 the Winston 500 was the Fall (2nd) race. A guy named Dale won the Fall race at Talladega five years straight from 1998-2002. "I was just saying it, because in the previous race at Bristol, the Big 3 didn't do too well. And in the next race, there were pretty off and they haven't got any serious problems. And we all know who has more weekend sweeps than everyone else... Drivers don't talk about it like the actual crown jewels of the sport. Winston made it out to be a bigger event then it was due to them sponsoring it and including it as part of their Winston Million Program. But it doesn't have the prestige like the Daytona 500, Coke 600 and the Southern 500 have. Also having two 500 mile events weakens any argument to make it a crown jewel. When there is nothing distinguishing the two events, how can one be placed above the other. At least the second races at Daytona, Charlotte and Darlington were all 100 miles shorter. 258. It was the Winston 500 fall race. One reason they moved the July race which was the DieHard 500 then was because of the how bad the heat was in Alabama in late July. They made it part of the Winston No Bull 5 program in 1998 with making the Spring race the DieHard 500. Corey, that's one reason why I count the Winston 500/Talladega race a crown jewel because R.J. Reynolds/NASCAR said as a race in the Winston Million program it was a crown jewel. The Daytona 500 was the richest race, the Winston 500 was the fastest track/race (at the time), the Coca-Cola 600 was the longest, and of course the Southern 500 was the oldest. It's what the Winston Million program based their reasons on for picking those four races. Talladega lost it's appeal as a crown jewel to new fans because of sponsorship change with Winston, the loss of the Winston Million and No Bull 5 program, and where it currently is no longer the fastest track anymore due to restrictor plates and other tracks like Michigan and California that are faster. However, I still consider a race win there to be a crown jewel. I just wish that the media or NASCAR would designate which one. I suppose the first one is fine due to it being a crown jewel during the Winston Million program from 1985-1997. The Brickyard 400 instantly became considered a crown jewel in 1994 because of its track tradition, however, I feel like Talladega is more of a crown jewel than the Brickyard because of its history in NASCAR. 264. This is a tweet from Clint during the Xfinity race, just after the Chastain-Harvick incident: "Everyone deserves a chance but these lap cars being as far off the pace as they are and not getting out of the way is ridiculous." Clint was referring to the 40 car being on the outside lane entering turn 1, causing the 3 wide cluster. The 40 was actually was driven by Timmy Hill at the time. This from Carl Long Motorsports Facebook explaining why: "The Chevy [in the 40] has the weakest engine of all our cars. The chassis is standard spindles and technology. The body is steel and the car weighs 150 lbs more than a composite. We had to use this car at Darlington because the better cars Chad has driven are being repaired. I have a composite car being prepared for Indy we could have brought here, but if it got wrecked, then we may have had to use the Chevy at Indy[.] Darlington is a tough place to drive and really hard when your car is handicapped. The car had starter issues in practice. This cut practice time short for Chad. We also had NO SPONSORSHIP $ at all for the 40 car. So the practice tires were the ones we had to qualify on, then start the race on . . . This is survival mode. Our race tires were all scuffs from other teams with 8 - 15 laps on them. This is not ideal at Darlington. It is what you do when you have no $ to get through the weekend. This gets you to the next race where you look to find sponsor $ and increase your level of competition. . . What happened is my POS Chevy was not given the attention it needed. It seems everyone working on it and Chad driving it gave up before we ever really got started. No tires, weak engine[,] and a rookie driver at a unique, difficult track in a crappy car[.] The car corded the right front early in race[,] maybe the camber could have been changed in practice.. could be that the tires were already worn a lot when race started and just could not go anymore. This put Chad in a position where he was sliding up in other cars path. Finally it was pulled behind the wall and the crew was attempting to find front end problems as they thought it was a ball joint. Timmy was out of the race with the 72 car. I was still on track. The [40] was parked and that car is my points leader[.] I need to know what's wrong with it. So I gave Timmy and Brian the go ahead to get Timmy's opinion and drive it. Timmy's lap times were right there with Chad's. Then Timmy had them make some adjustment to the chassis and got it much faster. They bolted on some better scuffed tires and went faster[.] The car was running at its potential at the end of the race." Most millennial drivers and fans probably do not. And take in the factor that Indy became an instant crown jewel in 1994 just because of its long track history. It really hasn't provided good racing with the exception of the very first race there. It just depends on your time period. "And if everyone in NASCAR including Brad himself says he only has one crown jewel win, then that by default makes Talladega not a crown jewel event." More of an opinion and not 100% evident. I consider all first race Talladega wins from 1969-1997 as Crown Jewels and the 2nd race Winston 500 from 1998-2000 as Crown Jewels. NASCAR or someone in their media should decide which Talladega race from 2001 on should be considered a crown jewel event/race. @266 I think Rusty finished 2nd to Elliott in 1988 there. You're right he just didn't run well there. He couldn't figure it out. Perhaps he struggled with the two different turns and with tires falling off the way they do. Tony Stewart couldn't figure out the place either. I think Rusty was great because he led the series in wins I believe for four years, but a lot of people/fans that I know don't consider him one of the true greats because he didn't win at Darlington, Daytona (points race), Talladega (Cup race), or Indy (2nd three times). 274. But he didn't, but I don't care about those stats. Indy, he had chances there too, just always one car better. It does bug me as a fan of his that he didn't get at least one Darlington win, but like you mentioned, some tracks just aren't the drivers strong suit, though Rusty was great at Rockingham (a track that tires fell off), so who knows? If your definition of modern era starts more arbitrarily at the start of flag-to-flag coverage, then Rusty is a close second to Earnhardt. If it starts post-Nashville, then Rusty does have the most wins at least. Although Racermetric data leans towards Earnhardt. When it comes to crown jewels, I always felt that the Winston 500 counted only based on R.J. Reynolds say-so, and I can't give David Ragan the same number of CJ wins as Rusty based solely on Reynolds' self-promotion. For that same reason, I view Gordon and Lee Roy's 3 out of 4 seasons as superior to Pearson and Elliott's (though Bill at least has the 11 superspeedway wins to brag about!) Rusty said has said if he had to do it all over again he wouldn't have went high to let him to the inside and more than likely that would have resulted in a crash with the lap car of Ricky Rudd on the inside on the apron. I thought he had the better car at Indy in '95, but a couple of cars got together on pit lane after his last pit stop as he was coming off pit road and that held him up enough for Earnhardt to pass him on the backstretch and Rusty couldn't do anything with him because of the dreaded aero push. Pemberton was so confident that Rusty wouldn't get by Earnhardt that during the last caution before the restart that he said the race was going to come down to them and the 94 (B. Elliott). This was one of the first races that the aero push was so evident as Earnhardt acknowledged in victory lane that he was a lot better when he got out front. Rusty just didn't go well at Darlington overall. Only 306 laps led over his career there in 43 starts. Some drivers were just better there during his prime such as Earnhardt, Gordon, and Elliott. In his last eleven races he just had two top-10's there. Before that he had 32 races there and 18 top-10's. @274 That's why I count it as one because for the longest time it was considered a crown jewel. Charlotte's 600 mile race is as well, and I believe because it's NASCAR's home track that it holds more value due to that reason. I do believe Talladega lost it's value when Winston and gang left. Although, the event really is still the same, it still lost its roots. Now... I find it funny when everyone is mentioning Indianapolis into the fold. It's only because it's the same track at the Indy 500. If this is the case, we might as well consider the Fourth of July race at Daytona, and Charlotte's fall races in the past one as well. Just no. As I said, people only want the track to be crown jewel because of its Indy 500 history, not because of NASCAR history. I don't see it any more valuable than Bristol or Martinville in my eyes. I rather win Sonoma and Watkins Glen than Indianapolis in NASCAR. Also, just because the on-track product racing has only been decent at best at a specific event, doesn't mean it should no longer be a crown jewel. Martin Truex Jr and Kyle Busch may have dominated the Charlotte 600 mile race with ease (392 and 377 laps led of 400), with the competition we have today vs in the past that's damn impressive to accomplish, but instead people just want to take away any value of a win the winner deserved. 295.
