The way the schedule works out this allows the Cup series the rare chance to run two of its "Crown Jewel" events back-to-back as this race follows up on the Southern 500 a week earlier at Darlington. The inaugural USAC Midget Driven2SaveLives BC39 presented by NOS Energy Drink race is scheduled to be held on the undercard for this one; racing Wednesday and Thursday on its new The Dirt Track at IMS infield oval. The race, held in memory of the late Bryan Clauson, picked up 118 entries in its first year. 3. Tide1732 posted: 09.04.2018 - 2:10 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) Reed Sorenson can get a WD again. 4. The team that won the Championship last year, one of the "Big 3," won't be back next year because of sponsorship. This gives you everything you would ever need to know about the state of the sport today. NASCAR has declining attendance, declining ratings, and now declining championship teams. If everything stays the same, I wouldn't be surprised if NASCAR doesn't exist 10 years from now. As for Truex, I think his best option for next year would be the Gibbs 19. The Stewart Haas 41 might be a good option as well, but I have a feeling Ford will struggle with the Mustang next year just like how Chevrolet has struggled with the Camaro this year. 8. We might get reduced to '70's level, with few truly competitive teams, races with 20-spmething cars, and possibly some non-televised events. But ARCA survived for a very long time in worse shape than that. If it ever gets to where ISC can no longer afford to keep Daytona open, then I'd consider it a death-nell. But I personally suspect that sometime this century the US will swing in a greener direction, leading to an overall ban on auto racing. That will be when NASCAR ends. 10. I can see NASCAR trending back towards being a regional sport again, instead of the national sport it currently is. Might even be better for it in the long run, as due to the high costs, ride buyers are currently more coveted than talented drivers. This also implies that the race winnings are lower, since there is not as much to be made by good performance. The only way talented unknown drivers get on teams these days is if there's a ride buyer already on the team. 29. Nascar tried to conquer the whole country, spread their forces too thin, and suffered a degree of collapse. I believe a lot of the popularity it enjoyed from about 2000 until a few years ago was basically bandwagon jumping, meantime it lost its lustre in it's traditional market. I live in NC, until 1996 there were six points races a year here, now there are two. They took away The Rock and replaced it with new tracks, whereas Rockingham and Darlington were ingrained in tradition in the Southeast. The racing on these two tracks was better also, I once saw Gordon and DJ race for the lead, side by side for forty laps near the end of the race before settling it. The same thing would happen at Darlington. Rockingham was just purchased by some new owners, and while I'd be shocked to ever see another cup race held there, I'd rather see Nascar get back to being wildly popular in the Southeast than mediocre nationwide. 32. RaceFanX posted: 09.05.2018 - 10:25 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Even when it was "regional" NASCAR had fans spread out. There's plenty of race fans in the North East who love stock car racing and the Midwest was strong hotbed too. David posted: 09.05.2018 - 10:29 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) #31: If NASCAR continues to ignore reality, then some new series should seize the opportunity. It's been briefly discussed somewhere on this site in the past: a new series, racing *stock* cars, on short tracks, mainly in the southeast at least at first, a series containing as many *recognizable* drivers as possible (which lets out simply converting the CARS or PASS series as they stand) because that's the one key to probable success, with comparatively low budgets/winnings which might actually attract disgruntled former top-level sponsors.... Sure it's a pipe dream, but the way NASCAR is heading why couldn't someone come along and take some fans away by creating a new series with racing the way true fans would like it to be (i.e. NOT substantially controlled by the media and other corporate bean counters)? 34. If I'm remembering it right didn't they send announcers or am I thinking of CART coverage? Pretty sure it was CART but I tought for some reason they sent their announcers over to cover NASCAR. Either way it was usually on at an insanely late hour as part of a Wednesday or Sunday night special with CART in an American Thunder segment along with, amazingly, swamp buggy racing at one point and hydro racing. In the 90s I'm pretty sure Eurosport just grabbed whatever looked the coolest. Pretty sure they had NHRA at one point for a brief while. They even covered and still do on occasion, cover Aussie and NZ dirt track racing and drag racing, which is always fun to tune into, and covered the super trucks for a while too, and F1....nowadays they barely cover any auto racing. Still, not sure how many tuned in to NASCAR on Eurosport but one of the vids of Rusty's flip at 'Dega in 93 is from a Eurosport capture with the ESPN crew doing the commentary, so that's proof Eurosport covered NASCAR for at least that race. THat being said, Eurosport was big into the big series at the time, they had CART, IRL, swamp buggies, tractor pulling (which is worth a watch if you are ever curious), boat races and everything else they could get their hands on. Often with Martin Haven or Tony Delahunty on the call. Considering the latter also covered winter sports it was an odd choice to say the least. Still, NASCAR tried. They tried, They even got EA and Papayrus to publish the NASCAR videogames over in Europe, even if the European markets slammed them for not being too technically comptent and having bugs. Which to be fair, they did. I'd argue at one point, CART/IRL/NASCAR was as big as NASCAR was for the Euro market in the 90s. Nowadays NASCAR barely gets two seconds of news coverage on Eurosport. Indycar barely gets any either though 35. Ferret posted: 09.05.2018 - 11:23 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @33: You on about TRAC? I'm not sure if it was me or somebody else in the Dover discussions who were talking about what a new series would entail but the issue would be tracks, since NASCAR has a lock on a ton of tracks with a no compete clause. If I were launching a new series, I'd go to Pocono, bring back the old short modified track and make it safer, and the big oval, Dover, I'd go to COTA, I'd go run dirt races as well as pavement races as well, a mix of dirt/paved ovals, a few big name tracks thrown in, and make it really, really simple to get started, keep the costs down. Effectively it'd be a glorified late model series I feel with not much room for teams to go nuts spending their way to victory, but...let's say it was run right, I feel it'd tap into a market that's gotten disgrunteld with NASCAR recently. I mean, for example let's say noise wasn't an issue, and you could persuade the FAA to let you do this, why not build a short oval out of barriers and such, on around an airport and charge cheap ticket prices, put in a support rac cast of young talent that puts on good racing, hell, bring the F2000 guys in, let them loose on a short oval built on a runway, let them duke it out wheel to wheel. You couldn't realistically go to any ISC or SMI controlled tracks so you'd have to think outside the box for tracks, hence my idea of dirt tracks as well,or for a wilder idea, take your local drag strip, take out a few of the timing blocks, and make a short oval out of that and turn the late models loose. Now I don't know if that'd work in actuality but it's an example of how simple you could make the tracks. You don't need to build massive all seater tracks. You just need to adapt existing venues. I mean, throw in a race at Lucas Oil Raceway, there you go. Oval is being worked on in the coming years, boom. Instant oval ready to go. Pocono, Dover, dirt tracks, few road courses, few tracks, hell let them run the Moody Mile during Dirt Week, that'd be a good starting point for a schedule IMHO. 36. That's not necessarily the track's fault. Whatever race is the final of the "regular season" lends itself to a few guys trying desperately to win, then realizing after about 1/5 of the race that they have no realistic shot, and everyone else aside from the I-must-win-this-race guys driving like pu$$ies because God forbid any action takes place which might deprive someone of a shot at the playoffs, so everyone's ultra-careful and you can almost hear the crowd snoring. I see no harm in trying a different venue, but you combine the usual Indy stock car snoozer with the "everyone be super duper careful out there" mentality and this so-called crown jewel is very likely to be one of the most boring races of the season. 40. A.J. posted: 09.05.2018 - 9:37 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) Richmond, Indy, whatever, you know that when NASCAR created the chase in 2004 they figured that not only would the 10 race playoffs be exciting just like in those stick-n-ball sports they desperately need to mimic for some reason, but they also figured that the last few races (certainly the LAST race) before the playoffs would be enhanced as bubble teams frantically jockey to make the playoffs and it would be ever so riveting, also just like those other sports. Well NASCAR has conclusively proven that it's not "other sports" and too bad it's never worked out the way they planned except for Michael Waltrip Racing's shenanigans at Richmond that one time, and there's never been any great leap in fan interest. In fact 2004 was the top of the ski jump ramp which attendance and ratings have been sliding down on ever since. 42. Unser1 posted: 09.06.2018 - 10:03 am Rate this comment: (2) (0) @41 The early years of the Chase actually were pretty exciting and the cutoff race at Richmond was a big deal. The first year in 2004 saw Jeremy Mayfield win the race to sneak in going from 14th to 10th in points, Mark Martin launch a late charge and overcome a spin in the last race to make the cut, and Jamie McMurray's great season end in heartbreak since he was 15 points short. It was in later years that things started getting a bad rap, the 1-2 punch of the ultra-popular Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Jeff Gordon missing the second Chase in 2005 (and Kurt Busch's infamous DUI after he did) plus reigning champion Tony Stewart missing out in 2006 didn't help. The unpopularity of the CoT and Jimmie Johnson's dominance (complete with the #48 team going in R&D mode in the races leading up to the Chase once they clinched their spot) in the following years cemented its reputation before MWR's shenanigans turned briefly turned it into a farce. 43. I wouldn't put too much money on a fairy tale outcome like that however; it's been 2 entire races since one of the "Boring Three" drivers have won a Cup race, and 3 in a row would be totally unprecedented in this season. Hell, even TWO in a row hadn't happened prior to Bristol/Darlington. The chances of winning should be set at something like: One of the Boring Three: 85% chance of winning @ Indy Rest of Field: 15% chance 6 to 1 longshots do sometimes come in, but the Menards, Kahnes, Stenhouses, etc. have their work really cut out for them. Even more so when you consider that if any longshot is going to use this race as a springboard to the playoffs, it's damn near certain that driver will be the one with #19 on his car and 4 teammates out there to do whatever it takes to help him. 44. Barney ran that team out of pocket from 2005-'15. They could run, unsponsored, 18th-23rd out of his pocket next year if he so desired. Probably better. Barney took his toys and left because Joe Gibbs Racing got pissed off that they lost the championship to a customer, so they heavily raised the cost of the technical partnership with Barney -- effectively pricing him out of the deal. Barney couldn't get a sponsor to cover the cost, in some part due to the fact that they'd need a per-race fee that would be exorbitant compared to what other teams are getting. That's all because of JGR wanting to poach FRR's talent, price the team out of the game and, in the process, leave a bunch of hard-working people out of a job. 60. Furniture Row only had 2 wins before making the alliance with Joe Gibbs Racing. Now, they have 18, meaning they won 16 races (and counting) with Toyota, including a champion. But since Joe Gibbs didn't have Kyle Busch win, he upped the price and became too much for Barney, even without 5HE. The first year Martin was in the #78 car, he was atrocious. In 2015, he got the stallion in shining armor known as crew chief Cole Pearn. But Before even THAT, FRR wasn't high speed. The only reason that they had success in 2013 was due to small sponsors on the #78 (Beautyrest) and let's not forget that BEAUTIFUL Wonder Bread car at Talladega. Other than that, looking at stats from guys like Jerry Robertson, Kenny Wallace, Joe Nemechek and Regan Smith, there were not many good results just from Barney's pocket change sponsoring the 78. The only thing I can infer is that if Leavine Family Racing confirms (or has confirmed) the switch to Toyota and the alliance and win the championship, expect them to close if the major sponsor goes and all they have left to run decent is TWD. Or, they could stay open and be like Roush, almost always irrelevant (plate tracks) Either way, don't trust Joe Gibbs or end up like Furniture Row. 66. As we saw last year with Kahne, a driver well down in points can win. So rather than an *obvious* premature end to the race, it may well be a matter of NASCAR's discretion as to when to call it off. That sure has the potential to open a can of worms: Take a look at who is leading (especially if it's a winless driver), take a look at points-as-they-run down at the 15th-16th bubble, then decide (or not) that conditions have suddenly become too unsafe to race and there's no hope of getting the race restarted. Jeffrey's 2007 performance was also slightly worse than their 2008 performance (although he was still 5th in points). I'm not sure how good DEI's K&N team was compared to others (they only had two wins, one with Bayne and one with then-part-time Cup driver Almirola, both in 2008), but they seemed pretty good, since they had top 5's in points in both of their seasons. In that race, Jeffrey finished 17th at Richmond purely by being slower than the cars ahead of him (he started 22nd). It's possible Dale just knows how poor Jeffrey is of a driver. It was frightening to see Cassill hit the wall head on while being squeezed into it by another car at the same time; at the same time, Jeff Earnhardt's lack of skill caused a late race caution that dictated the outcome in both. The Cup series is supposed to be a series that includes the best drivers in the world, and one driver is both single handedly changing the outcomes while putting other drivers in jeopardy with his lack of ability. 239.
