Brandonbilt Motorsports Twitter account has been alluding to something big on September 22nd, the day of the race. Call it a hunch. 5. (One week late, tbh. :P) This will be the third team Gray will drive for in 2018, starting out with BK through the first 17 races of the season, and a pair of starts in StarCom's second car at Michigan and Bristol. 7. Jimmie4life posted: 09.20.2018 - 5:26 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) I really wouldn't mind if Kes won 4 in a row, it goes to show that you have to have the right stuff at the right time. 9. George posted: 09.20.2018 - 5:32 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I'm not much of a Keselowski fan but 4 in a row would be a hell of an accomplishment, particularly since he hasn't had the advantage of being in the "Big 3" this year (it's starting to look like a Big 4 now). As good as Kes has been lately, I think the obvious favorite at Richmond has to be: 1. A guy with an outstanding prior record here, 2. At his "home" track, 3. Driving top-notch Toyota equipment, 4. And could desperately use a win after last week's outcome, seeing as how he's 16th among the 16 playoff drivers right now. Ladies and gentlemen, your 2018 Federated Auto Parts winner: Denny Hamlin. 10. Tarheel posted: 09.20.2018 - 6:19 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Kes win four in a row? Why not? I wouldn't mind it for the simple fact that it hasn't been done in a long time. I think he's got as good a chance as Kevin and Kyle had earlier this year. But naturally, my man is below the cut line and a win would fix that. Go Chase go. 11. Matt posted: 09.20.2018 - 7:02 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Denny Hamlin? I think not. Been way behind Kyle all year and at this point, arguably Jones. Was in contention for a win just once, at Indy. I could see him qualifying on pole like he has done a few races recently, but falling off halfway through the first run to never be seen again. 12. Wil posted: 09.20.2018 - 7:40 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) I could see Hamlin either getting hot and advancing to the final 4 or completely falling apart and not making it to the next round. Wide range of outcomes. 13. Anthony posted: 09.21.2018 - 8:07 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) The 23 really is a rolling driver train this year. This era of the field not being full allows such a thing. 14. JR-TV posted: 09.21.2018 - 10:34 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) The #52 driven by Gray Gaulding is a Ford. This will be Gaulding's first cup start in a Ford. 15. George posted: 09.21.2018 - 2:43 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Alex Bowman was good in both practices, he's had a knack for that in some recent races but hasn't always backed it up on race day. His 2 Chevy teammates looked pretty bad and were at the bottom among playoff drivers, no big surprise there ("figure out" that damn Camaro already, will ya?). Kes was fastest in the second session, so look out! 16. Kevin Colley posted: 09.21.2018 - 3:02 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Really shocked with some of these practice speeds. Ty Dillon fourth in both practice sessions, Cole Custer 13th in the first and 11th in the second. Both practice winners from one and two were not even in the top-10 in the additional practice. And Denny Hamlin was only 20th and 23rd in both practice sessions which is a big shock considering how well he runs at Richmond. Looks like it'll be a very competitive race. 17. joey2448 posted: 09.21.2018 - 6:55 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Kevin Harvick takes pole position at Richmond, his third pole of 2018 and 24th of his Cup career. Harvick is looking to rebound after crashing last week in Las Vegas. Daniel Suarez was fastest in rounds 1 and 2 in qualifying and ends up starting fifth, some nice speed from the #19 crew. Cole Custer was amazing in that #51 Rick Ware car, getting into the top-12 of qualifying easily and ultimately took 11th on the grid. 18. Jimmie4life posted: 09.21.2018 - 7:14 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Cole needs a cup ride, now! Look at his talent to get Rick Ware into the top 12! 19. George posted: 09.21.2018 - 7:21 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) If tomorrow's result echoes the Ford/Toyota-thon that qualifying was, the most desperate drivers heading into the Roval race will be: Dillon (Chevy) Johnson (Chevy) Elliott (Chevy) Bowman (Chevy) And the inexplicably weak-looking Bowyer (Ford). Barring a minor miracle, 4 of those 5 drivers will be the ones eliminated after Charlotte. 22. Anonymous posted: 09.21.2018 - 8:30 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) That bland top-3 23. Kevin Colley posted: 09.22.2018 - 12:00 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 18 and 19, I'm sure you are both right, but it's still impressive for Custer to make the final round of qualifying. He was also one of only seven guys to place in the top-15 in each of the two practice sessions and qualifying, so I do consider that an impressive feat. I've been critical of Suarez but he has had a great weekend so far too. He, Martin Truex, Jr. and Kyle Larson were the only three guys in the top-10 throughout both practice sessions and qualifying on Friday. 24. joey2448 posted: 09.22.2018 - 4:26 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Brad Keselowski starts eighth in his attempt to do something only two drivers have accomplished in the last 25 years, win four Cup races in a row. A handful of the sports greats have won four straight, but since 1993, the only two guys to do it are Jeff Gordon in 1998 and Jimmie Johnson in 2007. The four consecutive wins are a modern era record (since 1972). 25. JA28 posted: 09.22.2018 - 8:08 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 24, you should have said 1994. Mark Martin won 4 in a row in 1993. Obviously, Go Fas would have to form an alliance with SHR for it to happen, which would greatly improve the performance/capabilities of the 32 car. I could see it happening if somebody else gets the 41 car. I still think Custer is the favorite to land that ride for next season. 34. As long as he's making some noise, he doesn't care. Kyle Busch winning this race means he has won 5 of the last 8 short track races. This year he has won at both Bristol and twice at Richmond. Will he get Martinsville in a few weeks? Brad Keselowski, Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr clinches their way to Round 2 without having to worry about the ROVAL race next week. They can fight to see who can win the inaugural race. Kevin Harvick was a few points shy of clinching, but he'll be fine. Shame. I wanted Martin Truex Jr to win here. Things always happen to him. 119. 02Justin10 posted: 09.22.2018 - 10:48 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Darrell Wallace Jr. Took the Richard Petty #43 and finished behind (straight up): -Both Front Row cars. -A washed up Matt Kenseth/Roush Team. -Rookie Cole Custer. Jimmie Johnson is a much better personality than Kyle Busch, yet Jimmie was just as hated out of boredom as the rest. The fans want to be pleasured by excitement everytime, watching underdogs pull out a win only to be called a fluke afterward (Eric Jones, Austin Dillon, to name a few). Not naming names, but those fans are just terrible fans and should just stick with the NFL, which is even more boring. 126. Jones and Dillon don't have fluke wins. They just followed the old adage. "To finish first, you must first finish". Still interesting that someone like Richard Petty can't get elite equipment for his team, while he was enjoying his reign of terror as a driver back then and basically doesn't know as a driver what it's like to run with bad equipment (except his last 8 years as a driver). But, as we know, in order to be successful in NASCAR, you have to have some talent as well. And like Bubba showed us with KBM, he can win races, so the only reason he doesn't run good is the Petty's equipment. 130. First time was at Chicago with that last lap craziness with Kyle Larson. Kyle loses 13, after pulling away 23 last weekend, to Kevin Harvick in the regular season's championship. Now 53 points ahead. 8 races to go. Also to note: 8 races to go, Jimmie Johnson has 8 more tries if he wants to keep his streak alive of at least one win every year since 2002. Multiple wins at that too. 131. His contribution would be to use his fame to bring in sponsorship to fund the team, but, as we can see from the large number of TV commercials featuring Petty, that isn't happening (as far as I can tell, other than a brief cameo with Wallace, Petty hasn't done any ads for some while. Whether that's because of lack of interest on Petty's part or lack of interest on the advertiser's part, I don't know). There's no other way Petty could get "elite equipment". So the upshot is that RPM is a low-budget team, not that difference from Germain or Bob Jenkins or Archie St Hilaire. And their equipment and performance are comparable. 135. "At 53:30 on the latest Door Bumper Clear podcast, Brett Griffin says that there was a lot of talk in the garage this past weekend that owners have stood up to NASCAR and said they want either one package (current) or the other (all star) next year and the plate package. Well NASCAR has gone with the All Star package and it seems like they will use it at all tracks next season instead of 14. Brett also said that for certain tracks they will adjust the aero ducts and engine for the best racing, but the big spoiler will still be their and the overall basis of the package will be retained." https://www.reddit.com/r/NASCAR/comments/9io38e/ 145. In NASCAR, the difference between talent and elite equipment isn't that big like in F1, but the equipment is still the main reason why some drivers dominate and win races. A talented driver might win something in the end with mediocre equipment, but it wouldn't be often. Look at Bubba, for example... Excellent driver in Trucks with KBM, average driver in Xfinity with Roush. And not even 2 full Xfinity seasons plus some races from the 3rd season helped... But for a professional driver, I guess it's still better to have a weak ride in Cup than not to have a Cup ride at all and to stay in lower series forever. 149. This is, in fact, the first and only time the "Big 3" has finished in the Top 3. This is also the first time they each has their own achievements in this race. 1) Kevin Harvick won the pole. He has finished second in both stages and in the race. 2) Martin Truex Jr led the most laps. He has won both stages and scored the most points. 3) Kyle Busch scored ZERO stage points, and yet ended up victorious by winning the race. Led the second most laps. Also to note, Brad Keselowski and Chase Elliott are the only other drivers to have led double digits amount of laps, and at the time of this writing (before the round of 3 begins at Martinsville with 4 races remaining), they won the most races at 3 outside of the "Big 3." 151.
