First comment for this historical race. It is going to be a interesting
race for sure, either a snooze fest or total mess.

Drivers at the risk of dropping out from playoffs will make some crazy
moves for sure.

Don't be surprised to see Josh Bilicki back in the #51. He was in it at
Watkins Glen and I think he tweeted at some point that he would be back
in that car for one more race this year. So the Roval would make sense.

@7 - my prediction: lots of crashes in the front stretch chicane (NASCAR
will be unhappy if there aren't, since that's the entire reason that
chicane exists). Passing will pretty much only occur under braking into
the two chicanes (unlike Daytona, the cars won't be going fast enough
going into the infield section for that to be a good place to outbrake
someone). The infield will be follow-the-leader, and so will the banked
oval since accelleration is pretty evenly matched between the cars (at
least, for the top teams).

The NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series races on a roval track for the
first time in series history, bringing back the Charlotte infield course
previously used by IMSA and later the ALMS. Charlotte becomes the first
track to have NASCAR race on it in both the traditional oval and the
infield course layout with its roval course becoming the first new track
to join the Cup series schedule since Kentucky Speedway was added in 2011.

This is the first time a road course ever has ever been a part of
NASCAR's late season Chase/Playoffs championship battle. And it will be
a cutoff race for the first round of eliminations to boot.

There are only two drivers participating in this race that has won an
inaugural race at a track, and both of those drivers have 7 wins this
year (Kevin Harvick at Chicago 2001 and Kyle Busch at Kentucky in 2011).

Will either of these two be a multiple inaugural race winners, or will
we see someone else join that list of first time winner at a track? The
last time someone won at an inaugural race at a track multiple times was
Jeff Gordon, three times (Indianapolis 1994, Fontana 1997 and Kansas 2001).

I have a bad feeling that this is going to be a worse idea than having
Talladega as an elimination race. There's going to be some salty playoff
drivers who get eliminated because of a mess not of their own doing in
this one.

Alot of destroyed cars coming soon. Maybe next season nascar can have
the Championship race at a figure 8 track.. Their is plenty of race
worthy actual road courses that this race could have been. While the
"Roval" isnt new, i think they should have done it at daytona if they
were gonna do it. Not charlotte, this is just another gimmick like
stages. Like richard petty said Nascar used to be a race, now its a show.

I'd like to see them run the Indy road course, but with a less abrupt
Turn 1 at the end of the straightaway since as it is now it wouldn't
work for stock cars.

@17 at Daytona they'd either need to have plates and the road course
sections would happen at 50mph or they'd run without them and go about
220mph into turn 1.

I love the idea of this race, just no so much it's placement on the
schedule.

@14 I always figured McMurray would end up in the 47, don't know where
he'd go otherwise

I'm looking forward to this race and will definitely be watching.

Interesting to note that there weren't any changes to the final chicane.
I remember reading comments from Kyle Busch regarding the layout was
thinking it could easily be fixed by reversing the order (putting the
tighter corner first, then letting it open up). We'll see what happens I
guess.

And quick question as I haven't been following NASCAR properly for many
years now - will they race in the rain if needed? A video I watched
mentioned they can practice and qualify in the rain if needed, but
didn't make it clear if racing would happen or not.

As for comments about wrecks, I don't think it will be as bad as people
might think. There could be some incidents due to misjudged braking
duels, but I think following drivers will have enough time and space to
avoid. I'd expect 2 or 3 car incidents, but would be surprised to see a
big multi-car crash. Reason being is that the infield and the chicanes
will be single file and will break up the pack, meaning that you won't
have cars on top of cars with nowhere to run. This will be a single file
race with plenty of action into the turns, rather than a Talladega style
"throw a blanket over them" traffic jam.

This may turn out to be a bad idea, but honestly, kudos to NASCAR and
Speedway Motorsports for trying something different. At the very least,
it's guaranteed to be more entertaining than a 500 mile intermediate
track race.

@21 They wouldn't need plates as the gearing wouldn't allow for them to
reach 200. Nor would the distance. Daytona like Charlotte has a chicane
on the backstretch to slow them down before they hit turn 3.

So far I think the smartest decision by NASCAR is to not use the
frontstretch chicane during the start and restarts. That was just going
to make a mess of things.

The Stuntman returns!

He was originally announced as one of Ware's drivers before last season
started, but this will be his first race for them in the nearly 2 years
since they rebooted the Cup operation.

This could be like some of the races back in the 50 and 60 where there
were a lot wrecks and only 10 cars were running at the end sometimes
less. Or it could ironically go the others way and we have all cars but
maybe 2 or 3 running at the end. We shall find out

@21 - nothing remotely close to 220mph. Even in the days of the IMSA
Group C/GTP cars didn't top 200mph on the Daytona road course (to put it
in perspective, those cars reached 240mph at Le Mans). My guess is,
without plates, a Cup car might hit around 180 before braking for the
backstretch chicane or the entry to the infield section.

@22 - they will have rain tires available, but my guess is they will not
race in the rain if it's more than a very light shower. With a wall
around the outside of most of the track (i.e. all of it except the
infield section) the risk of wrecking the field is too high (not like a
real road course, where a driver can do a little agricultural racing if
he slides off in the rain, and then get back on the pavement).

In Pre- Season Track Testing Here, They Had A Chicane In The Backstretch
Caused Some Problems. And To Solve It, They Included Another Chicane In
Nascar Turn 4.

It wouldn't have to be ran at night.

Although I do understand the timing with it being in the late
summer/early fall at the moment. It would be better if it was ran during
the summer like it used to be with the Brickyard 400.

Kyle Busch tops first Practice. I am not at all surprised. He has
nothing to lose, already secured into the next round, a pretty good road
course racer, and doesn't want to lose his status of "winning at every
track participated in NASCAR." He'll definitely be a clear favorite.

@57 I'm sorry, but that has to be a joke, right? You really think there
will be 23 or more cautions in a 109-lap race? The average caution on a
road course this year has been 2.7 laps. If there were 23 cautions, that
would mean 62.4 laps of the race would be run under caution, or 57.3%.
The average road course race this year has been under caution for 9.8%
of the race, and has had 3.5 cautions. I think, if we want to know what
Sunday's race will be like, we can look at the previous road races this
year, perhaps on the higher end of things because it's a new track. I'll
guess we'll see 4 cautions for 10 laps.

chicane on the front stretch, as that will likely be a Mosport-like
final corner. Guess we'll have to see.

Bubba with another gem of a performance. The Roval is a prime example of
a driver's track. Three practice spins and 34th on the grid is not
impressive.

@64 Four is awfully low for this place. 23+ is excessive for cautions,
but I wouldn't be surprised if they get into the double digits. Just
look at all the spin outs and wrecks from the practices and qualifying.
We haven't hit race time yet.

@64 - does raise an interesting question, tho. On ovals, assuming a lot
of cleanup isn't needed, a caution is: gather the field, lead lap cars
pit, lap down cars pit, gather the field & get one to go, come around to
green. So the shortest caution is 5 laps. On the road courses lead lap &
lap down are allowed to pit together, and because the tracks are long
and cars can catch up to the field they skip the gather the field lap
before the green, which means a road course caution can be 3 laps. I'd
assume they'll use that system for the Roval, but I haven't seen it
mentioned anywhere. If they use the 5 lap oval system we're going to
have some very long caution periods.

I have a bizarre announcement. For the past year plus I've been going by
'Wil' on this site. I used to go by a bunch of different aliases and Wil
stuck (Wil Myers is my favorite baseball player). Now that I'm a

Loved how Bubba Wallace spun not once, nor twice but three times on his
warm up lap to start practicing. Then qualifying started, not 5 minutes
into the sessions they showed Bubba's car spinning again. I like Bubba
but this road course stuff isn't for him

These guys are all pros, but I genuinely worry about Bubba this weekend
from an embarrassment/reputation perspective. He's actually spun/crashed
on the Roval like 7 times in testing/practice/qualifying. I also worry
about William Byron through this lens, to a lesser degree. It's going to
be a wacky race. There's a non-zero chance that this race is a complete
disaster with cautions on every lap and drivers ramming into the chicane
and Nascar never tries this again.

My man Jamie Mac was fast in practice and qualifying so maybe he pulls
it off and crosses his name of the list for best road racer to never win
a road course. There is a long list of 'best driver to have never' for
Mac, but that's the story of his career. My other driver E Jones is
kinda toast in the Chase so I'll be watching without much skin in the game.

I really think this chaos and carnage that everyone is talking about
won't be as bad as we think. I've seen this before. All the talk the
week before a race is how crazy it's going to be and how many wrecks
we'll have, etc. and then it turns out to be a smooth, calm race without
too many incidents.
Maybe I'm wrong and it will indeed be wild and crazy with 12 of the 16
Chase drivers running into trouble, but with all the talk about the
unpredictability, I think the Chase drivers will be riding easy and
doing all they can to stay out of trouble. I don't think they'll be
taking risks and pushing it hard into the corners and chicanes. We'll
see I suppose.

I think there are some aspects of the tracks that some people will
struggle with all day, but I don't think caution will be as wild as
everyone's worried about.

of local caution. Even if it is a wreck fest, I don't think they'll do
away with the Roval, just tweak it some, like perhaps removing the
chicane coming to the start finish line.

Well.. it just happened. Bubba Wallace crashes heavy into the tire
barrier just a few minutes ago coming out of the backstretch chicane
destroying his car. Hey NASCAR, don't you think it's time to remove
those tires from that area considering how cars have hit it already this
weekend and we haven't even ran a race yet?

Jones just took a hit that was equal to (or worse than) Bubba's. It's
gonna take an injury before NASCAR does something about it. It's
ridiculous that your options through that turn (if other cars are
around), is either ram into their backend or ram into the tires.

@76 Unless they put something else in, that final chicane is there to
stay. The whole reason for it was to reduce the speed going into turn 1.
William Byron lost his brakes going in to that corner during testing.
Even after going through the chicane, he pushed the tire barrier back
quite a bit.

@86: You're probably right, but don't discount the possibility that
whatever NASCAR decides to do may make the problem worse (if that is
possible in this case).

Nobody wants to see a driver get hurt but I'm leery to mess with things
at this point after such great qualifying results yesterday: Bowman,
Chase, JJ, Blaney and some other "unusual" names near the top with nary
a Toyota or any other of the 2018 equipment-privileged drivers (Harvick)
anywhere near the top either. This is totally unprecedented this season
except maybe for a plate race.

I'd much prefer to keep it that way, though of course the end result is
likely to be far different from qualifying even if there are no changes
to the track.

Marcus Smith says the backstretch chicane was added at driver request to
provide a visual aid. He says he is open to moving it, but notes running
over the turtles in that spot would also be damaging.

If Kyle Busch doesn't win this race, his unique record of at least one
win at every track he raced in Cup won't be official anymore - just for
15 races of 2018 season. If he does win, then his record will be
official for the whole 2018 season and will last till NASCAR adds some
other track to the schedule.

He already is the only driver that has won everywhere without NASCAR
helping him in form of removing his winless track, but it can last for
only 15 races of this season (as long as he doesn't win at Roval this
season).

That chicane penalty is a little overkill. It essentially ends your race
for missing one corner. Theres no incentive for drivers to attack this
track and huge penalties for attacking it and missing by a little. Based
on the Xfinity race my primary viewing is going to be the nfl tomorrow.
Ill check on the race but this isnt doing it for me. Maybe tomorrow will
be different with the higher horsepower but it got an empthatic yawn
from me today.

@106 That is better than a pass-thru penalty, which makes you lose more
time and positions. And you don't want someone getting an advantage for
cutting a corner, that is why the rule is there. Yes, Hemric made a

Thanks I knew it was probably a time penalty I just didn't know the
amount. If it's a late restart and that happens you're pretty much
guaranteed to finish last on the lead lap.

Honestly not expecting a very interesting race tomorrow. Just a low
speed road course at the end of the day. Possibility for a track
blocking crash like on any narrow raceway with walls like in IndyCar
street races, but in the end almost everybody continues once the track
is cleared.

it in 1976, when they removed Texas World Speedway from the schedule?
How about Richard Petty and Cale Yarborough, that became the 2nd and 3rd
driver to do it in 1981, when they removed Ontario Motor Speedway from
the schedule? Kyle Busch is the first one to do it properly without
NASCAR's help. I'm not saying it was intentional, but it's the only
reason why those 3 drivers did it first.

William Byron was running fourth and blows a tire, causing issues as he
slides up the track and Aric Almirola smacks the wall going for an
evasive maneuver in NASCAR 4. Byron drives through the Legends car oval
to get to the pits. Almirola pits but it looks like the Smithfield #10

Hailie Deegan won the NASCAR K&N West race the night before this race,
becoming the first woman to win a race in a major NASCAR touring series
since Shawna Robinson won the Goody's Dash Series back in 1989. She got
a shoutout on the NBC broadcast of this race and they showed the last

Think there'll be quite a few changes to this track next year. And
softer tires (not that I think they'll need them, just seems like it'll
alleviate some of the slickness in the infield).

Agree I lost respect for Truex. But to be fair he had no idea how

I believe Hemric got into J. Earnhardt is what caused him to wreck and
helped Larson gain the point. It would be something if Larson made it to
Homestead as a finalist and won the race. He could look back at that

To me, the finishing position in the final race of the round, if you
finish say, 3 positions above another driver, and you're tied, the
driver who finished ahead should advance. So, Johnson, IMO, should've

A few tweaks needed aside this race wasnt as bad as i thought it was but
exactly as hard on cars as i thought. Congrats to Blaney and Larson! And
jeffrey even tho your down right now, your still the worst driver since
Kevin Conway

Yeah, JJ was doing what he was hired to do. It sucks that it screwed
over Truex but stuff happens. I'm not a 48 fan but I definitely respect
JJ for all he's accomplished during his career and certainly for going
for the win.

Okay I was just thrilled in excitement. The craziest ending to race is
this. The best finish in Cup is Chicagoland, hands down.

Jeffrey Earnhardt just seems to be a punching bag these past 5-6 weeks.
Wow. Wondering if he was itching his arms stalling right before the
start finish line.

@210 - well, Busch wasn't penalized because that's the rules, so can't
really complain. The big problem there is there shouldn't be asphalt
there. If you don't want cars driving off the track, don't put pavement
there. If it had been grass, there's a good chance Busch would have come
out worse (or not gone off track in the first place).

Not surprised at all to see the Jeffrey Earnhardt hate. Sure, he's not a
good driver and shouldn't be in Cup, but he got wrecked by Hemric on the
last lap through no fault of his own. He drove a fine race, and he's not
really a dirty driver or accident-prone. He's been taken out the last 2
weeks.

I have no respect for the move Johnson made. He also has to be smart
enough to know his situation and understand that he's going to make it
on points. I suppose there was adequate karma for the move, because only
seconds later he was eliminated from the playoffs because of what he
did. But that still doesn't give the 5 playoff points, 20th win or
victory celebration back to the 78 team.

Great drive today for Blaney, though. He did what he had to do, fought
all day and capitalized on others' mistakes at the end to take home a
well-deserved victory.

Little disappointed the 9 struggled on that last restart, but that is
the Chase fan in me. McMurray almost stole him one.

By the way guys!! This has to be special for Ryan Blaney.

This is Roger Penske's first win after 500 wins (501th win as a team
owner across all Motorsports series he participated in). Second career
win for Ryan Blaney, but first for Roger Penske as well as, first time
at an inaugural race at the Charlotte ROVAL. This has to be great for
them, especially after winning Darlington and Indianapolis a month ago
with Brad Keselowski.

I don't think you realize the lack of wins they've had in over a year,
and this being the inaugural event, that Jimmie probably wanted it more
to have something positive for 2018. That obvious disappointment face

I'm wondering how many times has Truex been spun out or collected by
someone else this year? I can only think of Jimmie Johnson at the ROVAL
and Kyle Busch at Bristol-2. He's been knocked out quite a bit this year.

Truex has gotten burned a lot on strategy this year and the past several
years, as well. Cole Pearn is excellent at setting up the cars, but he
really isn't all that great as an in-race strategist.

I just re-watched. When Truex spun and backed in to the wall, the first
thing he probably saw was Johnson driving straight, he might have
thought Johnson intentionally wrecked him when he retaliated in the
cool-down lap.

There was nothing wrong with what Jimmie did. He made a mistake locking
up his wheels and even mentioned how he got a good run on Truex because
Truex missed "turn 3" (if it was the oval). If anything I believe he got
a good run out of that turn and was preparing for a bump and run through
the last two turns. He just misjudged it.

He hasn't won or been relevant all year. He went for the win and was
going for win #84 to tie Waltrip and B. Allison. It was low risk at the
time but it cost him moving forward this year. More than likely he
wasn't going to win the title this year regardless if he won or didn't
win. What's the big deal?

All I have to say is good for Jimmie. Disappointed? Yes. A lot of
regret? Probably not. At least he shouldn't be.

I had a feeling that the last lap would've been very similar to the
Truck race at Mosport, considering the final chicane's on both tracks
are practically the same.

One thing is for sure, this race is so much more exciting than what we
would have seen if it was the standard 500-mile oval race.

I'd say he's been great regardless. He was a huge threat at both last
year as well, winning Watkins Glen and an engine blew up at Sonoma, thus
handing the trophy to Kevin Harvick

Plus the win with MWR at Sonoma back in 2013. Truex might as well be one
of the good road racers out there with 3 wins, only one behind Kyle
Busch among active drivers.

What a race. I think that Jimmie Johnson was right in going for the win
here because he hasn't been relevant all year and he already knew they
weren't contenders this year even if he did win. Jimmie is a racer first
and foremost, I don't believe he would do it any different, but I
understand that. Kyle Larson still made it in after having his car
nearly totaled in that first turn accident at the end of the race with 6
to go. They need to widen those turns in that area of the track because
just about everyone screwed that turn up. Then at the end, Jimmie
Johnson and Truex crash and Ryan Blaney makes it through the chaos to
win this action-packed and challenging race. Also, Pennzoil has a unique
distinction that it has won with different drivers, Logano won Talladega
and now Blaney at Charlotte Infield(the term that NASCAR Thunder 2004
uses). Also first non-Logano win for Pennzoil in Cup since Kurt Busch at
Dover in 2011 in the #22. Don't forget Menards was on the car as well,
and they haven't seen victory lane since Paul Menard won the Brickyard 400.

Truex has been excellent at road courses in his career. I don't have
data on this year yet, but from 06-17, he was only once passed for the
lead on track at a road course, and that was when he intentionally let
Brad pass him at the Glen last year in order to save fuel. For the most
part, if he gets out front, you're not getting past him on pure speed.

Win #84 would tie Jimmie with DW, but regardless of what NASCAR says, he
needs one more after that to tie Allison.

Between StealersWheel and Pettimore III, it sounds like we've got some
people with good taste in music here.

Just looking all over the internet I know i'm in the minority, but i
don't think this race was all that good. Don't get me wrong i think it
was ok. There was some decent racing but there was nothing special....
Then Stenhouse runs out of talent and the rest of race becomes a
glorified demolition derby. It just sucks because now where gonna have
to hear about how great the race was because the media and fans eat up
crashes over actual racing. Something that was probably a 5/10 is gonna
be remember as a 12/10 because of how stupid the last few laps were, and
to make matters worse it's probably gonna lead NASCAR to start adding
more roval races instead of looking at actual road courses in the future.

Wow, I don't know where to start with this one.

First, I can't believe I missed another Blaney win! I missed his
inaugural win at Pocono last year, and now this one! But no matter, cuz
more importantly Blaney is able to keep from going winless this year,
and this is his first win for Roger Penske after taking over the #12 car
this year. Super excited for the future of this kid.

As for the finish. No problem whatsoever with Jimmie taking a stab at
the win there. I know he was sitting good in points to advance to the
next round, but this is a guy who is accustomed to winning, and winning
a lot, each year. He has never had a winless season in 17 fulltime
seasons, and this was his best shot to get one.

Ultimately, the move didn't work and JJ wrecked both him and Truex. Not
only did he not win, but Jimmie missed out on the next round of the
playoffs ON A TIEBREAKER! Obviously in hindsight he made the wrong move,
he messed up, but I would take that win-or-bust mindsight 10/10 times.
That's why I watch racing, no matter the consequences.

And Truex's showing of disapproval after the checkers? No problem there
either. Yes Truex had already clinched his way into the next round, but
again, he wants to win. Period. And Jimmie took that win away from him,
and Truex decided to show JJ his unhappiness by turning the #48.

started crashing knowing he needed one more spot to advance to the next

Well, that's it. Kyle Busch's unique record of winning at all tracks in
Cup lasted for only 15 races. But I really don't think he won't change
that soon - you just can't win them all at once and that win can come
sooner or later anyway.

And congrats to Blaney, by the way. He became another driver to win at
least 2 races in all 3 series. I bet that Michael Novak will soon create

I'm just grateful NASCAR took a risk on this track, and I think it paid
off. The standard cookie cutters aren't getting attention anymore, so
this was a good move. Honestly, this was the first Cup race I've watched

With the points reset, all of this season's winners, except for those
who won at Daytona, rank in the top 9 in points, and everyone in the
current top 9 has at least 1 win this season. Both drivers who won at
Daytona failed to advance to the next round.

If Jimmie Johnson had managed to win a stage at any point during the
season, he would not have been eliminated.

The lack of variability among winners this year results in the top-9
thing you were talking about. The guys who won at Daytona didn't have
great speed or dominate those races, so those were more "fluke" wins.
However, we saw several fluke wins at non-plate tracks in 2017, which
made the playoff field weaker and made winners get eliminated earlier
and more often.

This really was a good race, and i have been more than critical about
the product this year.

Now we shouldn't do this to every cookie cutter track (unless they run
more than one a year), but this was unique and I hope they keep it around.

Heard one guy even suggest turning the 600 into a Roval race. Just no.

@367 - I'm with you on that - overall the race was mediocre - altho
NBC's abysmal production may be part of that. We had Johnson/Truex at
the end, and Keselowski/Larson a bit before that, but by and large cars
on equal tires weren't doing much racing, the passing was cars on newer
tires passing those on a different pit sequence. And of course a big
wreck, but now the drivers know the track we won't likely see that again.

In many ways this track reminds me of the original Homestead - where
that track was a 3/5ths scale Indy, this track is a 3/5ths scale Daytona
road course. And as you'd expect, running full scale cars on the 3/5ths
track doesn't work all that well. Two changes I'd make: the backstretch
chicane needs to be a lot deeper, more like the bus stop at Watkins Glen
(I hate the bus stop at Watkins Glen, because it screwed up a really
good track, but it would fit the Roval nicely); and the front stretch
chicane should be eliminated, or failing that reversed (so the tight
turns are 15/16, and the sweeper 17 on exit). What the track desperately
needs are braking zones, which it doesn't have at all now.

What I wouldn't change is the infield. To my surprise it's possible, if
a driver is good, to set up a pass in turn 4 and complete it in 5. It's
not a great layout, but there's opportunities for skill to triumph.

In the interest of safety, I think I'd also look at getting rid of the
turn 1 wall (you'd have to leave enough to avoid cars getting onto the
turn 7/8 stretch, of course), and letting cars run straight thru on the
oval if they can't make the turn. Probably would have to be a one-lap
penalty.

Anyway, it wasn't a great race but with some tweaks (and a better TV
production) it has some potential.

It amazes me how things change in not even a decade.
If Jimmie Johnson spun at a road course in 2010 and took out the leader
in the final turn, people would tear him, if you'll excuse me
moderators, a new asshole. And would praise the driver he took out for
spinning him after the race.
Now, eight years later, people are lambasting Truex; especially on
Twitter, for being pissed at and turning Jimmie after the flag flew.
Kinda shows what not winning does for fan preception as opposed to
winning. Johnson hasn't changed as a person since 2010, just his driving
ability has gone down a couple iotas with his age, coupled with the
first year Chevy body.
Fans and, especially the media, are fickle. There's a point where if you
win too much, people turn on you, no matter who you are and how you win.
And as of right now Truex has been approaching that point since about

But I do think Johnson has changed. He's become more open, personable
and relatable. He was pretty guarded as a personality during his
championship binge, but I think he's completely let his guard down now.

NBC reports a 1.99 overnight rating for the race, which is up 10% from
the Charlotte playoff race last year. (Both races were on NBC and
started at the same time.)

Anyone who thinks Johnson has changed needs to be worried about their
own personality issues. He's in unfamiliar territory. He suddenly
doesn't have full control of the team like he used to. From 2004-2010,
anytime a teammmate dared challenge Johnson and Knaus's supremacy in the
team, it was followed by that teammate suffering weeks of DNF's more
suspicious than the epoxy on James Hylton's car at Daytona in 2009.
Chevy doesn't have the edge needed for him to even eke out a win.

Hendrick doesn't even have the edge within the Chevy camp. This is
Johnson's chance to prove he's a wheel-man and not a wheel-holder. If he
can rise above this and pull out some wins by the end of next season, he
can cement himself as being, for sure, the driver of his generation. If
he can't, then he's a chump who happened to have the best car for the
best manufacturer for a stretch while having a questionable crew chief.
Worst of all would be completely cracking and bowing out like Carl
Edwards did.

387. It's interesting, but people usually start to like some driver that
used to be dominant, but has a problem to win regularly nowadays. Take
Jeff Gordon, for example. Earnhardt fans were extremely happy that
something happened to him in late 1990s and hated him. In his final
years as a driver, I didn't see many people complaining that he managed
to win a few races...

It's still pretty early to predict it, but it can easily happen to Kyle
Busch as well, if he stops winning regularly at the end of his career
and will be glad that he won at least 1 or 2 races in season. Plus, his
personality can keep changing to a good guy with some exceptions in form
of a minor incident with upcoming years.

I think you hit the nail on the head. JJ's still a little bit meek, but
he's also more relatable. I wish he had pulled off the win and I'm not a
huge fan of his (I don't dislike him anymore either). MTJ's entire
stable is annoying--Pearn as well as Truex's spotter are annoying as all
get out. I want to put earmuffs on whenever I watch Radioactive.

Side note: I think people were pulling more for Truex when his
girlfriend was battling cancer. That's a natural instinct. Now that
she's in remission, people can focus on Martin Truex Jr. the competitor.

263. To be more specific - after the Charlotte Roval race, he doesn't
have a win at all tracks HE STARTED AT. If you want to look at all
active tracks today, he's still missing a few of them, because he has
never made a start there in some series.

But, like in Jeff Gordon's case, there's a little excuse that he has won
at all original Cup tracks in the schedule. He only failed to win at
Roval, because it was recently added just like Kentucky was "recently"
added in 2011. Forget that and Jeff Gordon with Kyle Busch are the only
drivers that managed to win everywhere (and Gordon should especially
thank to NASCAR for letting him start at Homestead in 2012 after that
incident with Clint Bowyer).

David Pearson also won at every track currently on the schedule by 1976.
Petty and Cale also had all tracks, after Ontario and Texas World were
taken off.

@393 - they do it because NASCAR tends to be huge copycats, and races in
Europe have had sponsor boards in the runoff areas for decades. So of
course the Roval had to have them.

It's the same reason there was a Ferris wheel outside the track - Le
Mans has had one since the 1920's, so of course the Roval had to have one.

Kevin Harvick is somewhat in the same boat, especially in 2015 when he
led over 1,000 laps led during Kyle Busch's absence. People were tired
of seeing him leading laps after laps, race after race.

I think a reason many people don't like Harvick is his attitude. He
often appears to be a little hypocritical, and gets into more than his
fair share of arguments with other drivers. But winning can't help him,
that's for sure.

Fair enough, but like Truex 2015-16 vs 2017, I do think Harivck 2014 vs
2015 is very similar to Truex's years despite personality differences.
Harvick shut everyone up in 2014, then got tiring in 2015, and he lost a
ton of races in the process!

All that shows is that Harvick is right and the schedule is stale. This
increase can be attributed to the fact it was a Roval event and nobody
knew what to expect. People tuned in to the unknown.

I think a new schedule would help a ton. Imagine how many people would
tune in to watch; return to Rockingham, going back to Montreal for
Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, going to the Gateway to the West, replacing
Indianapolis with IRP. I sure know I would be anxious to see all of that.

McMurray is pretty good, but best road racer ever to never win at a road
course? That's probably Brad Keselowski. 6 top 5s, 9 top 10s, 170 laps
led, 14.4 average finish. McMurray had 4 top 5s, 8 top 10s, 56 laps led
and a 17.4 average finish in 11 more starts.
