Last week's insanity in the inaugural Charlotte rival race saw Jimmie Johnson eliminated in the last lap chaos when his bonsai move for the win backfired with Austin Dillon, Denny Hamlin and Erik Jones also getting the axe. Kyle Busch leads the points as round two begins in front of the fellow "Big 3" racers Kevin Harvick and Martin Truex, Jr. plus the surging Brad Keselowski. There's only 15 points separating the remaining eight playoff drivers: Clint Bowyer, Kurt Busch, Joey Logano, Roval winner Ryan Blaney, Chase Elliott, Kyle Larson, Aric Almirola, and Alex Bowman. 4. Obviously driver rating isn't the stat to end all analytic stat by any means - does anyone actually really know what it means, besides the explanation given on the loop data page? - but it paints a relatively good picture on how a driver ran most of the day. But, check these out: https://www.racing-reference.info/driverlog?s=19&id=kahneka01&series=W&yr=2018&trk= https://www.racing-reference.info/driverlog?s=19&id=smithre01&series=W&yr=2018&trk= That shows that Regan had a couple runs better than what Kasey has mostly done and a couple runs worse than what Kasey has mostly done. Also, 3 of the races that Regan drove in had chaotic finishes that resulted in a jumbled up running order compared to what it had been like most of the day. In the one race that didn't see as much chaos, Richmond, Regan drove the 95 to its worst non-DNF result of the season. 12. Historically the recipe for good racing is lots of power and not too much traction, which is the exact opposite of what NASCAR's doing. Unfortunately it seems Brian France's fascination with Daytona/Talladega style pack racing has spread within NASCAR's brain trust. Incidently I notice Brian France has pled not guilty to DWI and possession, and is not in the NASCAR Road to Recovery program. 22. 1995 Subaru WRX STi posted: 10.03.2018 - 7:51 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) "Josh Hamilton's commented this on the /r/nascar thread about downforce: "Feedback (including drivers) that lower downforce would produce better racing bc the car would be harder to drive. Unforeseen circumstances made it so engineers became more important than drivers. If you gain 50 lbs of downforce on a 1500 lb downforce car, compared to 50 pounds on a 3000 lb downforce car, you're giving your car a substantial advantage over the field that even the best drivers in the world can't overcome." Found this quote about the current package. Seems too fit. So the racing sucks now that they go fast. So slowing them down will make the racing worse? I seem too remember back in the "good old days" racing was "great" because they didn't go that fast and the cars were basically aerodynamic bricks. Perhaps too make the racing better is too slow the cars down. NASCAR maybe going about it the wrong way but maybe open mindedness is needed? Oh for those who want the 2014 package back got news for you... racing sucked with that package too and NASCAR got rid of it (because fans hated it) so now #bringbackthe2014package is going around. Make up your mind. 23. Minnowfur posted: 10.03.2018 - 9:31 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Surpriseing fun fact: Sliced Bread has only led 4 laps at Dover entering this race lol 24. On the other hand, there's a fair bit of expert knowledge on the subject, which NASCAR is going contrary to, and ignoring experts is not usually a good way of being open minded. To your main point, tho - what's called "good racing" usually results when a following car is not negatively affected by catching the leading car. What we've seen on NASCAR's big tracks for a couple of decades or more (I'm not sure when your "good old days" are; I can remember when cars had 427ci on the hood) is that the following car loses aerodynamic downforce and develops push when it catches up to the leading car, which is a major negative affect. There's several ways to attack that problem. Indycar does it by generating their downforce mostly with the underbody, and lots of it, so that losing a little to "dirty air" isn't a major problem. Another way is to largely get rid of aero downforce, so that what you lose in dirty air is too small to make a difference - this is how NASCAR used to be, in the days of near-stock bodies. NASCAR of today is afraid to try that, the baby steps they've made in that direction aren't enough to solve the problem. A third way would be to massively increase the draft. The draft is a positive effect on the following car, and if it's big enough it will outweigh the negative effects of losing aero downforce. This is what NASCAR hopes will happen with their new package. Unfortunately they're coupling it with a huge reduction in engine power. You mention engineers being more important than drivers - the high downforce, low power package is worse in that regard, because skill at braking and accelerating without wheelspin is no longer needed - the cars are too slow to need much braking, and not powerful enough for wheelspin. That results in pack racing, where all the cars are pretty much equal, and the skill involved is in timing the draft to make a slingshot pass. At that is a skill, to be sure, but it should be a small part of a drivers repetoire, not the main or only one. Again, history says lots of power and not much traction are the recipe for good racing, and NASCAR follows a different path at their risk. 34. 1995 Subaru WRX STi posted: 10.05.2018 - 6:48 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) ^ possum I agree however lets us say that NASCAR basically lets the engines return 900+HP from before with the current aero rules. Would the racing get better? At the start perhaps but sooner rather then later the teams will make up the difference in other ways. And it will ruin the racing. Just look back at 2016, when the package was first raced of course the racing was better... but like clockwork teams already had ways too tweak and screw with it and the racing got worse over time. NASCARs fault? Nope it is the teams. It is endless cycle; NASCAR makes the mouse trap, teams find a way around it, NASCAR makes a new mouse trap. BTW I don't believe a damn word the drivers have too say. They wanted less downforce for years and got it. Then as time went on started bellyaching about it been hard too pass with the current areo rules and then bellyache about next years package that their roles will be reduced. Shut up, your roles were reduced the moment the cars became over engineered POS. Blame your own teams for doing it too you. 35. Why not take your time to make sure everything is right? The worst it would have been was 2-3 seconds. Add another possible win taken away from Harvick because of his crew. Accidental or not it cost him. And how many times will the 14 take away a win from his teammate Almirola this season (New Hampshire)? It was nonsense for the 14 to come back onto the track. Just count your losses and take your car to the garage. It was unnecessary to come back out on the track. I realize the points situation, but it was a lost cause and really hurt Almirola's chance. SHR was running 1-4 with 100 laps to go and it ended as about as ugly as it could for them. Congrats to Chase... Nice to see the bowtie win for a change if Harvick can't. Before the Clint Bowyer crash, Truex was running exactly in 10th. When he stayed out before the Aric and Brad crash, he was 3rd. Then he got damage and shuffled back to 15th. Very interesting indeed. I honestly hope he gets 20 Top 5's and 20 Top 10's by season's end, he's at 17 right now with 6 races to go. 217. racefangurl posted: 10.08.2018 - 1:38 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Probably just the thumbs down troll. Last weekend, it was Ryan Blaney and now, it's Chase Elliott. Will Aric Almirola be the next in line this week at Talladega? I can smell another lists of wins from Michael Novak... This time, for Chase Elliott. And I think we can finally say that he can win races - won at Watkins Glen fair & square and now earned another win on a normal track by holding off other drivers. You throwing words are people's faces, or getting offended and then babbling on about random stuff that doesn't mean anything in the slightest nor make sense is just downright hilarious with what you just said. If I recall, you were bragging about Kyle's 2016 "old Chase" championship in the past. If anything this would help make the asterisk championship of his less questionable and people would begin to accept him more as a true champion. Knowing Kyle Busch, and after showing his unhappiness after he crashed out at the ROVAL knowing he advanced to the next round, I wouldn't question that it's on the back of his mind to score the most points in a season. Kyle is the type that wants to achieve everything to the max in NASCAR. Kevin definitely doesn't care (he's already done so three times!), and Kyle would care more about the championship, however I can see Kyle in the back of his mind have a "personal" goal like that, especially with the way he is gunning for 200 wins across all series, which in the end only 50 of those wins has any weight to his golden success as of this post. 226. Dale Jr. From 2012 to 2015 was a very good stretch. Dale Jr. in those 4 seasons had 10 top 5's and 20's top 10's in each of those seasons. By claiming Dale Jr. not having a good season in 2012, and 2013 shows how biased you. If any driver not named Dale Jr had at least 10 top 5's and 20 top 10's each season for 4 straight years, you would say that was a very stretch. Dale Jr. in 2012 had 10 top 5's and 20 top 10's despite missing two races due to concussion. That concussion screwed his season with suffering 2 concussions in a 6 weeks time. Dale Jr. had championship caliber season in 2012 before his August 29th Test session concussion at Kansas. Dale Jr. before that concussion was only 15 points away from points leader Greg Biffle and 4 points away from 2nd place Jimmie Johnson in points. Dale Jr. in 2013 had 22 top 10's with 10 top 5's. Dale Jr. matter of fact in 2013 would win the championship in this current chase format. Dale Jr. had an outside chase in 2013, but the chase format at the time hurt him due to his blown engine at Chicagoland. 229. racefangurl posted: 10.08.2018 - 5:58 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 221, Chase is actually a Jr., too. So even if the tire is laying flat on the ground, totally stationary, if the crewmen move too far away from it, it's a penalty. Like far too many NASCAR rules, common sense was not employed in it's creation. 232. But if you ever looked properly at the minds of athletes, you would know they just don't care about miscellaneous stuff, because all they care about is the best possible performance in their sport. Hell, Kyle Busch even forgot how many Xfinity wins he had after his Loudon win last year... He has people that send him some text messages with interesting things he has done, but he definitely doesn't remember them all. By the way, he would really become the champion in 2016, if the old Chase rules were still in place. However, there was a different playoff format, so he didn't care about it, because it just wasn't important. And once again by the way - did he say it's his another goal to be the "regular season champion" after 36 races? How can you know it's his goal, when he never said it? Do you see into his head, what he thinks? He was disappointed, because he surely wanted to win at Roval as well. That's nothing new from him... 242.
