Matt T posted: 10.10.2018 - 7:14 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) Based on previous races, I'd expect at least a big one, if not a rollover. That being said, my predictions (may not be accurate XD): 97 withdraws before the race. Pole upset prediction: Jimmie Johnson, but probably Truex or a Gibbs guy (Hamlin or Busch). -Minor accident near the end of stage 1 takes out at least 1 playoff contender on the frontstretch, most likely Alex Bowman. Others I predict to be in it are William Byron, JJ Yeley, and DJ Kennington. Joey Gase drops out with an engine problem, as well as Jeffrey Earnhardt & Cody Ware, and maybe Brendan Gaughan has problems too, depending on how his car runs. Top 5 in the stage: Clint Bowyer Kevin Harvick Kyle Busch Ricky Stenhouse Jr. Martin Truex Jr. (Not necessarily in this order) -Stage 2 will be pretty boring, I'd expect maybe a debris caution at most. Trevor Bayne ends up having problems close to the end of the stage as well and drops back. Top 5 can be surprising for this stage, so let's get some underdogs in (again, not in specific order): Chase Elliott Martin Truex Jr. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. Michael McDowell Kevin Harvick Heck, maybe David Ragan sneaks a top 10, as well as Matt DiBenedetto, who's looked promising on plate tracks. -Final stage: caution on lap 121 for a small crash in 3/4, maybe Almirola catching the wall and ending his day. Caution on 136 for debris on the backstretch. 10 to go, everyone starts to make dicey decisions on position. These escalate as time goes on, and at 3 to go, the mini big one strikes coming out of 4, taking out at least 1 more playoff contender, likely Kurt Busch, as well as Erik Jones, Stenhouse, and Austin Dillon, among others. I say 9 cars at most. This sends us to overtime. 1st attempt, our rollover happens on the backstretch. Just for fun, lets say Daniel Suarez this time, maybe turned by Jimmie Johnson, who gets the inside wall hard. Daniel blows over, 3 or 4 rolls, lands on his wheels. Red flag comes out. 2nd attempt, the big one strikes as they take the white flag and head into 1, Jamie McMurray gets turned by Stenhouse, and 12 cars pile in, namely Keselowski, Kyle Larson, and David Ragan, who hits hard, maybe head on, and gets the back wheels up. Caution comes out, race over, top 10 (in no particular order): Martin Truex Jr. Kyle Busch Kevin Harvick Denny Hamlin Clint Bowyer Michael McDowell sneaks in Ryan Newman Chase Elliott Joey Logano Ryan Blaney Out of these guys, I say Busch gets the win, followed by Truex and Harvick. Minor upset win prediction: Newman. If he actually has some good luck on this track. Absolute Upset win prediction: McDowell. Guy has some good runs on plate tracks, especially Daytona in July, and is definitely one to look out for. DiBenedetto gets a top 15, maybe sneaking a top 10, if no issues happen to him. He also has really good runs here. I think it's the draft. Again, I'm not trying to be a prediction wizard. In fact, I'll be astounded if any of this happens, as Talladega is completely unpredictable. This is just how I see the race going. Sorry for those who don't like reading. 49. Anyone who's come to the nonsensical conclusion that Toyota can't possibly win on Sunday is the one who needs to put down the glue. True that the "Big Two" contenders who drive Toyotas don't actually need to win here (mucho playoff points pretty much locking them into the final race @ Homestead) and they can sandbag at the back of the pack all day to avoid disaster if they choose to, but every other driver would be more than happy to take the checkers. 85. The Bridgestone presents the Champ Car World Series Powered by Ford name was....way way way too long and cumbersome. On the other end of the scale, the Daytona 500, and somewhere in the middle.....North Carolina Education Lottery 200 or Buckle Up In Your Truck 225 or whatever it was. My take on race sponsors is they should be short, or snappy, or fit. See Bathurst, or the Miller/Winston sponsorship in NASCAR in the past,or as metnioned AC-Delco. All snapppy, to the point. Also special mention for Indycarnival Australia. It's....oddly cumbersome but oddly well put together too. It's somewhere in the middle on my scale of good vs bad race sponsors. 89. Bowman has a Daytona 500 pole, so he could be a factor. Elliott always runs well on plate tracks. Erik Jones' first win was at Daytona. And anytime you go to a plate track Stenhouse will always be a factor. Logano might be a good pick with his Dega win. Those would be the top picks. Underdog picks would be Buescher, Ragan, McDowell, possibly Dinger with his strong 3rd in the same race Jones won. The trouble is, plate races are so unpredictable, you don't know who's gonna wreck and who's gonna avoid wrecking. Good luck narrowing it down because plate tracks are really anyone's game as long as they stay out of trouble. 92. Only reason Dillon won the 500 was late race chaos, not to mention he dumped a Ford driver for the win. Then in the July race, all of the Fords were taken out in accidents, including the dominant car who either started or was involved in 5 of them lol In fact, in the last 10 RP races Ford has led the most laps in all but one of them, which was Spring 2017 Talladega where Kyle Busch led the most. So with that I feel confident that Ford will run up front most of the race, but where everyone finishes is a different story, just like you said, because as we all know plate races are a complete lottery. 94. In fact, those backmarkers normally only break into the top *20* when a better car breaks or crashes. Otherwise it's the old same, same old, every race. I'm not suggesting that all races should be a total crapshoot with the lesser cars on more equal footing with the likes of SHR & JGR, but I think it's nice to have more than just 15 truly competitive cars on the track for a few occasions per year. 117. On a side note, Kyle Busch loses yet another 10 points at least this week in the regular season's standings. There are only 12 points separating Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick. Harvick crashing early at Fontana and Charlotte definitely cost him huge ground, however he has made a tremendous comeback as of late. Also, he lost about 17 points from his Vegas win earlier this year (was docked due to a penalty). Too bad the Playoffs ruined this, this would be an interesting battle for the championship for sure. Keep in mind, should Harvick overcome Busch, this would be his fourth time scoring the most points, would then be the fourth driver to do so behind Petty, Earnhardt and Gordon. 267. No matter which way NASCAR went, someone wasn't going to be happy. However Complaint #1 would have cost him the race anyway. All that's happening is the name is being changed to "tapered spacer". You may rest assured that NASCAR will tweak the "spacer" dimensions to keep speeds in the same ballpark, and tweak the aero to keep the cars in a pack, just like it always has been (or at least "always has been" for most folk reading this site). 287. No one could catch them all day and in the end, fuel mileage and a late caution spoiled their hopes for an all-SHR finish. But Almirola FINALLY gets a win this season and Danica Patrick's old team finally picks up a win and first win for the #10 car since Johnny Benson, in 2002 I believe, Scott Riggs did win a Winston qualifier in the #10 Pontiac. But nonetheless, a well-orchestrated effort by them today. Kurt Busch dominated all day but lost the lead late and ran out of fuel on the Overtime. Kurt Busch was upset about the way the race ended, believing that they should have thrown a caution after Chase Elliott and others crashed, to give the ambulances time to reach them, but the cars and drivers were well out of the way and safety workers could attend to the drivers and also questioning why they ran another lap of caution. But that's racing, that's the way it goes. Kurt had a dominant ride when the Stewart Haas guys were there but once they had to pit, Kurt was a dead duck in the water and Aric Almirola seized the opportunity to pass and got the win. Overall, a boring race that had a remarkable conclusion. Savor this win, Aric. Hopefully there will be more in his future. 291. But without the playoffs, I'm sure both of them would race smarter and more consistently, because everything would matter and not just a win in each round. What usually happens is whoever's leading bounces back and forth between the inside and outside lane until either there's a wreck or one lane gets enough of a run to pull alongside. In this race, whichever SHR car was leading just ignored the outside line, confident that with 3 pushers he'd eventually pull away. 328. possum posted: 10.16.2018 - 4:48 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @325 - I think we've seen that before, in fuel mileage races where everyone runs out of gas at the end. 329. Everything done below the Cup series hold no significant to anything achieved in Cup. Plain and simple. That's a fact some Kyle Busch fans, such as yourself, will fail to see until you finally grow up, if not forever. "And you think they would respect him more, if he had it? A lot of people will most probably not respect him even after winning 7 titles..." As a racer, arguably yes. As a person, understandably no. "In their eyes, he's a bloody cheater that has to be banned from NASCAR for life for being too good." Per usual, you're taking it out of context. If you're referring to the Xfinity/Truck Series, why does it even matter? He'll get what he wants next year anyway. "Do you realize that even those two are capable of running rather more consistently than winning every race and risking possible problems that could hurt their chances?" It certainly doesn't look like Kevin Harvick is staying away from the lead, Kevin was running away with it at Dover. Neither has Martin Truex Jr or Brad Keselowski. They've been leading laps. Kyle Busch could have easily played it safe at Richmond but instead he ran to the lead after Stage 2, after both stages he scored 0 points to help his case. Are you even watching the races? Highly doubt it. Kevin Harvick was not happy at all back at Las Vegas when his tire blew up and crashed into the wall, even with the massive points advantage. They are all competitors and want to win. You can't say they're not going to go for the win when a win grants them a 5 point extra advantage and an automatic lock moving forward. It'll also put less pressure on themselves and their team for those 1 or 2 races. Any one of these guys could end up like Kyle Larson last year at Kansas and blow an engine before stage 1, and not advance to the Round of 8. Even Kyle Busch, with the way he's been running since the Playoff began, he hasn't been hot for stage points either. "So one bad race doesn't mean anything - just look at Talladega (both of them are still 1-2)." Talladega is Talladega, even then Kevin was essentially leading with his teammates rather than playing it safe. It's because they were gunning for the wins prior to the playoffs is the reason they have so many points. They don't race any differently now than they do then. 338. The removal of the ride height rule allowed teams to get as much speed out of cars as they could, and when NASCAR made the restrictor plates smaller, it essentially killed any chance for good racing. The cars only made around 400HP, which if cars begin to break up the pack and start scooting away, drivers don't have enough power underneath the cars to catch back up to the front pack. It was going to happen with this package, because the cars had no power underneath them. 352. Jimmie4life posted: 08.08.2020 - 7:32 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Races fast lap: 204.869 MPH.
