This season's "Big 3" of Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch, and Martin Truex, Jr. all come in looking to secure a second Cup title while Joey Logano comes in looking to play giant killer and claim his first crown. This will be the last race for the legendary combination of driver Jimmie Johnson, crew chief Chad Knaus, and sponsor Lowe's at Hendrick Motorsports. To mark the occasion the team has given the #48 Lowe's Chevrolet a throwback look for its last race, replicating the blue-and-gray scheme from Johnson's rookie year in 2002. Knaus is moving over to work with William Byron next year. This could very well be Matt Kenneth's final NASCAR race. Kenseth has said he has no plans right now to race in 2019. 4. This is where dreams come true. 4 drivers hungry for a championship: Logano has never won a championship, but finished 2nd in 2016. Ky. Busch won the 2015 championship, and is looking to cap off an 8 win season with the championship. Harvick won the 2014 championship, and with 8 wins, and with one Homestead win, things couldn't be more difficult. Truex Jr. won the 2017 championship, and looks to dominate Homestead to win. These 4 are the best of the best, and will battle for the win, and the championship. 5. In 2017, we had Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick and Brad Keselowski being former champions. The lone guy, Martin Truex, Jr, was the one seeking for his first championship and ended up winning. This time, we have Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick and Martin Truex, Jr, all being former champions. This time, Joey Logano is the guy seeking for HIS first championship. And if Kyle Busch just finishes in front of Logano and Truex, the title with the old Chase rules will be his like in 2016. Not to mention that if Kyle Busch does win the title via playoff system, this would be his "3rd" title, because if these rules were here in 2012, he would win as well. And a nice bonus would be the fact that he has a pretty solid lead in the non-Chase/playoff standing. So, to sum up - it's interesting to take a look at that, but it's even more interesting, when you take a look at it by yourself and not someone, who just counts it for you here. Brett Moffitt lost the championship then, so he won both the Truck race and the champioship. Tyler Reddick won in his debut leading only the last lap then, and he won the Xfinity race and the championship. I thought he'd be blowing everyone's doors off this weekend. It makes me wonder how much that Texas penalty (where the #4 team was charged with tampering with the rear spoiler) affected the team speed. It is a 1.5 mile track, but it's shaped like the old Atlanta style or classic oval track. That and the fact that Childers isn't at the track could be some issues. It will be interesting to watch today. Perhaps they're looking for long run speed which could be dangerous for him because this race has had a tendency to have late race cautions in the past. Harvick wins stage 2, while Busch & Adam Stevens improve on their car and finish in the top 5. The 18 team continues to improve on their car throughout the race, and a caution comes out to set up a late restart. Harvick has a slow stop, and Busch beats him out of pit road. Kyle Petty even said that him, Martin, and Gant all knew that for either one of them to have a chance that the 7, 11, and 28 would all need to fall out in the first few laps of the race AND one of them lead the most laps, finish in the top 5, etc. 85. Naturally, artificial competition creates no such thing. Kyle Busch has 22 Top 5's and 28 Top 10's. Exactly the same as Joey's in 2015. Kevin Harvick has exactly 23 Top 5's, tying his best in 2015. Only difference is, he reached 29 where he had 28 in 2015. He was also ONE Top 10 shy of tying modern record 30 set by Jeff Gordon back in 2007. Kevin Harvick was 10 laps shy of leading 2,000 laps led. Kevin also is .1 shy of tying his best average finish of 8.7 (set in 2010 AND 2015) by having an 8.8 this season. His average start is also 8.8. Martin Truex, Jr becomes the third driver to score 20 Top 5's, the highest of his career in a season, and one upping his 19 from 2017. Also the third driver to lead 1,000 laps led. Kyle Busch has set loads of records for himself this season. Second best average start to the season of 7.4 (7.2 last year). His best average finish in 8.3, the best of his career and the best of the season. Kyle has scored the most points in 2018 as well. He also has the worst starting position of the winner, 32nd from Richmond. He also had the most dominate race (Charlotte Coca-Cola 600) of the year. Also, keep in mind folks that had Martin Truex Jr won (because he was one of the Big 3?), I doubt we'd had many complaints. He and Joey Logano BOTH had 10.7 average finish. Drivers in the final 4 have a 1:10 "chance" of winning the race. However, cars racing on the track isn't exactly a random event and there's more factors than I could perform in a simulation. But if the format has been in place for three years, I believe the odds are 1:1000. I'm sure someone who is better at math than me will make a correction here. At least Logano has 26 top 10s, so it's not that bad... If we take a look at the old Chase rules system, Logano would win either way, because he was losing 5 points to Kyle Busch, but he would earn 45 points, while Kyle "only" 38. That would make a difference of 2 points between him and Kyle Busch and Martin Truex, Jr. would be just 1 point shy in 3rd place. This only confirms the fact that Joey Logano is one of the strongest drivers during the last 10 races and this system would really suit him - would finish 1st in 2014, 2nd in 2015, 2nd in 2016 and 1st in 2018 after that horrible year of 2017. He also did win the title with the playoff system, so now, he just has to have the most points to be truly considered as a driver that would have at least one title no matter the system. On the other hand, Logano winning the title is pretty fair to everyone, because no one got another title or more wins than somebody. Kyle Busch is tied with Kevin Harvick for the most wins in 2018 (the first time for both of them) and Kyle scored the most points in the theoretical point system without the Chase/playoff. That means he would be at least one-time champ no matter the system. 456. I was actually routing for Harvick a bit this year because he has clearly come into his own as a driver and I thought grown up a little bit. Apparently I was wrong and I have lost respect for him. Also, I think there could be a big swing in NASCAR. Joe Gibbs has clearly lost some speed the last 3rd of the season. Even when Kyle Busch was able to win he did so in the last stage usually with strategy. They haven't had the raw speed of the past from Gibbs Toyota's. Even though Atlanta didn't technically set an all-time low, it was the lowest-ever rating for the second race of the season. Atlanta used to be held in the fall during a time of year that is less favorable for ratings. So essentially, every single race in 2018, with the exception of those mentioned above that underwent some sort of change, had their lowest-ever rating. 497. The top 12 drivers of the year included all the SHR and Penske teams along with Kyle Busch, Truex, Larson, Elliott, and Hamlin. Jones and Johnson are hanging out in 13th and 14th kind of by themselves, then points are close again from 15th on back. They would have to deal with the reality this playoff nonsense isn't the gold mine they often claim it to be. Therefore, should it really be considered a sellout when the only reason this race attained such status was for PR purposes? There's a hockey team that had a regular season game a few nights ago with a half empty home building. The listed attendance was about 500 short of their arena's capacity. Is the team and the media claiming, "Well, only 500 tickets went unsold." No. The media is noting the decreased attendance and the team is taking action to fix their team. Meanwhile, NASCAR says their gigantic championship race was a sellout when there were in fact many empty seats. And the media covering the sport can't be bothered to note it. When NASCAR fails to fill a measly 46,000 seats for their super duper humongous championship race with a format they claim the fans want and has to resort to an agency or some other entity buying all the remaining unsold tickets in order to claim a sellout, i.e. success, and pretending nothing is amiss, I don't see them making the right changes or even addressing the actual problems (they are instead pursuing the village idiot's dream of pack racing at tracks other than Daytona and Talladega). Another possibility, depending on exactly how the "companies that produce cars in the US" rule is interpreted, would be the Infiniti Q50, which is only a tiny bit larger. I beleive Nissan has raced that in Europe, and they might see more bang for the buck promoting the luxury brand. Had Matt Kenseth hadn't happen 2015 Joey Logano would probably be the 2018 Kevin Harvick, but then again they both have been hit with adversaries as such (During the last round of Playoffs before determining the Final Four; Kevin was hit with the points penalty at Texas in 2018, which would have been one week after the Martinsville 2015 mess with Joey Logano vs Matt Kenseth, which caused both drivers to finish 2nd in season long points standing as well!). Joey Logano winning the most races in 2015 would also match up with Kevin Harvick or Kyle Busch's most wins in 2018. Joey Logano's Average Start in 2015 and Kyle Busch's Average Start in 2018 are fairly close. While Kevin Harvick literally almost replicated (except the win differences) 2015 with his 2018 performance, his Average Start and Average Finish are super close. Then again, had Joey Logano actually gotten the win at Martinsville in 2015 (aka Matt Kenseth kept his head and not been so salty), Joey would have had around a 8.1 Average Finish, besting Kyle's Average Finish in 2018 but being the 2018 Kyle Busch that year, as well as scoring the most points over Kevin Harvick, since Joey finished 37th at Martinsville instead and only lost to Kevin by 21 points. Joey lost a good 36 points and would have had a 15 point advantage to the good. Bottom line is, ever since the Elimination Playoff Era has began in 2014, these three drivers have been the best of the best by far. It's interesting to see how much longer they can go. However, all three are very worthy of being Cup Champions and they've all earned it! Before someone mentions Martin Truex, Jr, I honestly think he's the wildcard of the four! 536. Gordon wrapped up the title with a couple of races left that year so the shortened race didn't affect the championship picture. 555. They had lights so darkness wasn't an issue. 556. It seems they are not because, for example, Kevin Harvick should have 19 stage points from this race added in giving him a total of 1386, and stage points should also be added in for the other 3 finalists. Or am I wrong? 557. Hence why I've mentioned before that they should leave this stageless and keep it a classic 267 lap shootout instead of having it separated by "three stages," because it provides zero reasoning for the finale to have one, especially on a championship weekend. Even then it does make it look really strange to not include the stage points at least for the non-Playoff standings, because even if they are ineligible for the Championship Four "official standings." In a way it's like how Cup drivers are rewarded in Xfinity/Truck, they get no points whatsoever. That's somewhat how it is here. 558.
