Of course, these are all low-budget teams, and any of them could experience mechanical issues in their Duel that would immediately hand the transfer spot to the other team. 8. 34McDowellFan posted: 02.09.2019 - 11:02 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @6 Germain has a good plate program too Here are their top 10's in the cup series 2014 Daytona Night Race: Mears- 4th 2015 Daytona 500 - Mears - 6th 2018 Daytona Night Race - T. While it is the Daytona 500 and they should have been well prepared for the race, it is also the only race not running the old restrictor plate package and so Doug Yates and the boys might not have put as much effort into the engines as normal. Also, this is a new Ford body and that may have affected them somewhat. And I see that William Byron has punched his ticket into the 2020 Clash. Someone better tell Chad Knaus that he's starting on the pole for the 500. During one of the qualifying practice he looked at the time sheets and thought his car was faster then 11th. It was as Knaus was looking at Johnson in 11th, while his driver Byron was 9th. 50. Congrats to William Byron, with his first race paired with 7-time Crew Chief Chad Knaus. Hendrick Motorsports are 1-2-3-4 after qualifying. They may not start that way for the Daytona 500 however, that'll be determine after the Duel races on Thursday. Byron and Alex Bowman are starting on the front row. This is also the fifth straight year team owner Hendrick Motorsports has started on the pole for the Daytona 500, a new record. Jeff Gordon (2015), Chase Elliott (2016 & 2017), Alex Bowman (2018) and now William Byron (2019). Jimmie Johnson won his way back in 2002 and 2008. Finally to note, this is the 20th Pole Position won by a Hendrick Motorsports driver. I believe Byron is the 9th driver to win one at Daytona. 51. Again and again they show they have no clue how to run a racing series. 54. cjs3872 posted: 02.10.2019 - 2:56 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @45 and @49, a lot of that could have to do with the possibility that Ford may not have a good car for simply running fast and a better one for actual racing conditions. A greater test for all three makes will be the Clash, because that will show what everyone has in racing conditions, but even that might not be the test the qualifying races will be, because most teams that run The Clash don't even intend to run that car again, at least for the duration of SpeedWeeks. One of the greatest charges in Daytona 500 history was the 1990 effort of Ken Schrader, who charged to the front in a back-up car after wrecking his pole winning car in the final few hundred yards of his qualifying race. (He went from the back row to second place in just 23 laps.) Ned Jarrett said during the broadcast that he felt that Schrader's back-up car was a better race car than the car he won the pole with was, and while Schrader was in that race (he was out by lap 70 with engine failure), he certainly seemed to prove Jarrett a prophet. And given that only the front row is set during time trials, most of the teams might not have even cared about how they fared during time trials, because they know it's the qualifying races that count, not time trials. The only teams that care about time trials are the ones who think they have a shot at the pole and those that don't have guaranteed starting positions that may have to worry about their time trial speed to get into the race. The rest of the teams don't even care about how they fare during the qualifying runs. 55. Mile501 posted: 02.10.2019 - 3:08 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @11, 17 - True, the #31 isn't low-budget. Whether a car is fast all by itself is pretty much meaningless. As for Shrader's run, that was back in the days when all sorts of tricks were played with plate motors, and he had a good bit more horsepower than most of his competitors. I don't recall if that was the year of moving manifold dividers or the year of undersize carb mounting bolts, but the Hendrick engine shop led the way in finding "interesting" ways to get around the plate. 67. These guys aren't just going to lay back and will be making moves with atleast 10 to go. If you look at Speedweeks The Clash: The big one happened in the Clash with 16 scheduled laps to go, when Johnson tried to make a move on Menard. Others would have followed suit sooner and it probablhy would have been 2 wide racing afterwards. The Duels: Most guys want to save their cars for the 500, so its not unexpected that they wouldn't push the envelope to much. Both Byron and Bowman weren't even in the lead pack at the end of the race. They had some points on the line, but preserving the car is worth more then a few extra points. Truck race: There is a game coming out on consoles soon called "Wreckfest". This race was just a trailer for the game. Xfinity: When you actually look at the top 16 in the final laps, I think a lot of them had reasons for not racing in the end. Allgaier wasn't going to make a move to the final lap due in part to his teammate being the leader. Had it not been Annett, he might have moved sooner or been more aggressive. Jones had no manufacture support close to him and the same could be said for Cindric. RSS was having a banner day for the team with 2 cars in the Top 7. By not racing, they have two clean cars, a boat load of points, and a decent chunk a money. Racing hard at the end, could have dropped both outside the Top 10, or worse, two cars on the wrecker. They did make a mention during the post race show, that part of the problem might have been, very few cup drivers in the field. Since Cup drivers are usually just going for the win, they are more likely to take risks and be aggressive. However, Brad Keselowski had his roof hatch issues which left just Chase Elliott. Elliott tried to make moves, but no one else was going with him. Bell was also trying to make moves and with him being a championship contender, it'll be easier for him to overcome a bad finish. I do believe guys will be more aggressive in the 500, and A) it's the 500, B) there is less incentive to hang back, especially when you closest competition are in the front. 99. Some notes: This is the first time a team finished 1-2-3 in the Daytona 500 in over a couple of decades. Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch and Erik Jones finished 1-2-3 for Joe Gibbs Racing, the first since Hendrick Motorsports were 1-2-3 back in 1997 when the commentator of this race, Jeff Gordon won it then. Also an interesting note, Denny Hamlin wrote a note to himself way back when he was age 7 that he wanted to achieve his dream of winning the Daytona 500. He wrote it on the date of February 17th. The date of this race today is also February 17th! How about that! 356. Wil posted: 02.17.2019 - 8:08 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) @354 Who the hell appreciates tandem racing? True, some of the whining is silly, but other people complain with a purpose, because they've followed the sport for a long time and sincerely wish things would return to the way they used to be 15+ years ago. Also, just because people comment here doesn't necessarily mean they watch races. For example, 10-15 years ago, I watched NASCAR all weekend, every weekend. Now, I think I've watched one or two races in the last 5 years. I just keep up with stats and casually follow some of the races online through the live leaderboard. Many drivers say pack racing takes it out of the driver's hands and you're forced to race in a box. And I 100% agree. You can't pass on your own you can't run your own line. Your either forced in a giant pack 2-3 wide or follow the leader like the 80s. At least in the 80s you could actually make passes by using the draft to sling shot. But let's be real here people giant packs isn't real racing. But also the last few years of plate racing isn't either. At least the tandom package let the driver's be more free and show some skill. I'm hoping whatever this new speedway package is going to be will put the race and the car in the driver's hands again where they can catch someone and pass wherever they want and not have to rely on clean air or drafting lines. The tapered plate will not induce as much turbulence into the intake charge, but otherwise will work the same. At Daytona and 'Dega, where you can run flat out all the way around the track, there is no reason to think this alone would have much effect. The rest of the schedule...yes, there will be difference and drivers will have to adapt how they handle corner entry/exit. At least when somebody was an idiot in tandem racing they weren't crashing 20+ cars unless it was on a restart. That being said, it wasn't a good solution either. You can't keep people from being stupid or aggressive, but you can take those drivers who aren't further away from the problem. Daytona and Talladega don't really give any opportunity to do that. If they could reduce down force dramatically and make it not wide open and allow their straight line speed to go up to 220 or so and force them to lift and drive through the corner it would be great, but I don't think they could make the cars that inefficient if they tried. 392. The steady decline in quality of the TV production over the years hasn't helped, and I don't doubt that FOX's almost continuous commercials didn't drive some potential viewers to find something more interesting to watch." But I wonder if NASCAR deserves some of the blame for that as well, in a way. Always greedy for money, NASCAR probably pushed to get as much money out of their TV deal as possible. Now that ratings continue to drop, the networks have to cut corners and show more commercials in order to make up for that drop, since a single commercial spot won't sell for as much as it did when ratings were higher. 420. possum posted: 02.22.2019 - 6:47 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @419 - yeah, somewhat. No-one forced FOX and NBC to offer absurd amounts of money for broadcast rights, so I can't fault NASCAR for taking the money offered. A wiser NASCAR would have put some restrictions in the contract on how much broadcast time was devoted to commercials rather than race action, but that would be expecting too much of Brian France & Mike Helton & crew. As it stands, FOX and NBC are losing bigtime on NASCAR, and they're responding by putting additional advertising into the race (things like the "Toyota Race Break" or the little short Duracell ad), or having Mike Joy read an advertising spiel instead of commenting on the race, just as you say. Caws-n-Jaws doesn't catch a lot of that stuff, so the amount of advertising time they report is significantly less than what the average viewer would call "ad time". And, with FOX and NBC losing money, NASCAR isn't going to ask them to stop doing anything that makes money, even if doing so would have long-term benefits in bringing fans back to the sport. 421. Last fall at Talladega, he finished 26th for the first time in his career, the first time ever. In this race, it's his first time starting in the position 31st. He has finished in every position from 1st to 43rd in Cup, and he has qualified in every position 1st to 43rd in Cup, except one last spot. He has yet to start in 40th. Which is now the dead last position in NASCAR with a full field. 424. We have 38 full-time teams and the 54/27 likely going part-time heavy with the 62 doing restrictor plates. NASCAR should have no (big) problem with entries in any series this year.
