Yeet posted: 08.13.2019 - 1:03 pm Rate this comment: (4) (0) Where NASCAR messed up is having Open cars receive 1/3rd of a purse that a chartered car does SOLELY because they don't have a charter. An Open car could score a Top 20 and not even receive as much of a check as the 37th place car. Now that doesn't sound like it's worth it, right? The "guaranteeing cars into a show" part of the charter is no different than Owner Point provisionals in the NGOTS and NXS, but in those series teams can make a difference in how much they earn as they compete for more Owner Points, that's what should be allowed in Cup because for Cup the only sort of purse increase is at the very end of the season with the Top 2 Open cars in Owner Points, and then again only 2 teams get that. The charter should go like this: 36 Chartered cars guaranteed into a race but non-chartered cars do NOT receive 1/3rd of a check, but the purse money on where they finished and how many Owner Points they collect, just like in the other 2 series (which Ed added is not in a shortage of entries) 9. Anonymous posted: 08.13.2019 - 6:03 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) No kidding the 77 is making way more money than the #00, 51, 52 teams that they are around in points this year. The 77 is the 78 from last year and it's owner point finishes the first two seasons of the charter were 1st and 2nd. in 2016 when the charters were announced they finished 11th in points. 13. Yeet posted: 08.13.2019 - 7:04 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I'm happy that the 77 and Haley won a race and all, but the are literally taking the exact same path as MSRP Motorsports did besides the start and parking of it. They're getting paid to do virtually nothing. The only reason MSRP existed in the first place is because the Series was lacking entries. The only reason the 77 team exists is because of the Charter. They are literally just cash grabbing teams taking advantage off of other teams working their behinds off to make it to the track let alone be competitive in it. Notice how one team doesn't exist anymore when NASCAR took drastic changes to the sport... Do I think any less of the 77 team? No. Do I think any less of this sport? No. It's just a nuisance to believe how "corrupt" this sport can be sometimes and what people will do for a quick buck. 14. There is the list of Top 10 worst average finishing position for "active drivers" at Bristol. Ryan Truex may not be in this race, however he does have a 40.3. Interesting considering the max field is 40 and we are on average having 36-38 entries outside of the restrictor plate races for the past couple of years. By just participating any Bristol races these days he could have increased that average finish to under 40.0. 18. 52 posted: 08.14.2019 - 6:38 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) @16 In that moment at Texas though, he was kind of a genius. 19. He's literally in the prime of his career, and he's in reach of passing his buddy and owner Tony Stewart to hit 50 Cup wins. He may even pass Rusty Wallace in wins to rightfully sit behind Dale Earnhardt in all time wins (Unless Kyle Busch magically stops winning to fail to catch Dale). 28. racefangurl posted: 08.15.2019 - 2:49 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Just mentioned those 2 since they're the only old guys besides Jimmie Johnson I could name easily, unless Clint Bowyer counts. Earnhardt's private jet, a Cessna Citation with the registration N8JR that he has used for years, landed at Elizabethton Municipal Airport, about 21 miles south of Bristol, but slide off the runaway after touching down, crashing through a fence, and before bursting into flames. Earnhardt, his family, both of the jet's pilots, and a dog escaped the accident without serious injury. Parts of the fence wrapped around the plane but thankfully didn't block the doors so everyone could escape. Junior suffered no injuries but decided to take the week off from his broadcast work to spend time with his family in the aftermath of the accident. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating what caused the crash. 36. Canadianfan posted: 08.16.2019 - 10:32 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) From twitter. Did Bristol grind the upper groove prior to the weekend? SMI's Steve Swift said no. Last wk, they cleaned off rubber from upper groove -- so think of like a buffing machine and water to get it off. That way it would take longer for rubber to build in the upper groove. 37. Hi posted: 08.16.2019 - 11:23 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Slayer is off the 54 car and Pods is on. 38. The finishing order isn't likely to be *that* obvious (I sure hope not, anyway), but there's probably as big a gap in quality of equipment between Penske and Hendrick as there is between Gibbs and Penske. Another interesting note; Joe Gibbs drivers qualified 1st, 3rd, 9th and....31st? Kyle Busch was the first driver to qualify but that is awfully low for someone who has won here 8 times. Interesting. Not only that, before 2019, Kyle Busch has never qualified in the 31st position. His first time was actually at the Daytona 500, when he finished second to Denny Hamlin. Denny Hamlin won the pole when Kyle qualified 31st for the first time. Interesting. When he's in a Toyota that's almost as advantageous as the 11-18-19-20 then DiBenedetto achieves results almost as good as them, and that's certainly a point in his favor; but when he's not in such a car, he doesn't get those results. People should not simply ignore that fact and pretend that DiBenedetto suddenly in June became an elite driver despite allegedly "mediocre" equipment. What with the groundswell of sympathy Matt is getting these days and the perception that he's being screwed by Toyota (and I am in no way suggesting he ISN'T being screwed), JGR/Toyota has a couple of options to "save face" if they feel they're getting too much negative publicity: 1. Hastily announce that for 2020 DiBenedetto is staying within the Toyota family and is either moving over to the #81 XCI Cup car (just another crapmobile though) or getting the top of the line #20 JGR Xfinity ride. Or: 2. Stop giving Leavine good equipment ASAP, and let the furor die down as DiBenedetto goes back to running 24th each week & his new bandwagon fans jump ship. I hope DiBenedetto does the right thing, which is to become a free agent after 2019 and stay at the Cup level. Possibly in David Ragan's current car which we already know will be available or, best case scenario, with an even better team like SHR if they get rid of one of their lesser drivers, or (pipe dream) in the #48 when Jimmie Johnson decides to hang it up for good after his dismal 2019 season, or maybe Ganassi adds a third car, or whatever. 318. They must have gotten rid of all the Chevy's to make way for the Old Gibbs Toyotas. Wheeler also mentioned that it took some time to get the process in place to where they could perform, which appears to be about half the season. 319. wisconsinracefan posted: 08.18.2019 - 11:21 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Ryan, You are showing your Earnhardt fan bias by claiming Dale's 1999 Bristol win a popular win. I am Dale Earnhardt Sr. fan myself, but I remembered hearing a lot of boos from the after Dale. I heard those boos from watching ESPN with Surround sound back in 1999. The entire family loved how Dale won the Bristol race in 1999, but you have count all fans that actually won at the race track. When you get a ton of boos from a packed crowd at a race to the extent Dale did after spinning out Terry Labonte for the win, it is not known as a popular win no matter how you try to spin it despite the fact I loved how Dale won the race. 320. I mean the race is still on highlight reels and is used as commercials leading up to Bristol races. The 1995 and 1999 race are celebrated in the Bristol ring of honor even at the track. I also stated on Denny Hamlin's page a little earlier on why that was important win for Earnhardt at that juncture of his career. So there's a lot more reasons that I consider it popular than you might. That being said I was pumped and celebrated that win more so than a lot his other wins besides 1990 Phoenix, 1994 Rockingham (clinched 7th title with win), 1995 Brickyard and Sears Point, 1996 Rockingham and of course 1998 Daytona. He really needed that win that night for so many reasons. "Dale's win at Bristol in 1999 is well known, but it does not mean a majority of fans liked the win at the time it happened." I loved the win, the ones that didn't are traitors in my book. He got roughed up by Terry coming out of turn 4 coming to the white flag. He gave it back like he was supposed to. Aside from Daytona, Matts best runs have come at road courses and smaller tracks where driver ability is more likely to compensate for the lack of equipment quality. 324. They got a new driver, new crew chief and switched manufacturers in 2019. It takes some time for any team to get used to changes like that. We saw an early flash of what would come at Bristol in the spring when he finished 12th. But since June, DiBenedetto has finished in the top 10 at EVERY single track where it's more about the driver than the car (Sonoma, Daytona, Loudon, Watkins Glen, and Bristol). Matt going to the 3rd round round be questionable due round 2 being a crap shoot. My reasoning is the first round has Richmond and the Charlotte Roval. Matt lately has been hot on driver tracks and Richmond is a driver track. Matt has done well on road courses this year and Matt getting a top 10 at the Charlotte Roval is not out of the question. The only problem in the first round is Las Vegas. The team Matt is only able to pull of a 18 to 22nd place finish at best for 1.5 mile tracks. The 2nd round is questionable due to Talladega being a crap shot. The fact is Matt would need Dover and Talladega for him going to the 3rd round. The nature of Dover could make Matt get a top 10 there. 332. If Matt was not in the big one for the Daytona 500, he was going to finish in the top 5. Right now, Matt would've had 4 top 5's and 7 top 10's. The Nature of the 95 team Matt Dibenedetto is with actually would make them more scary in the playoffs than Ryan Newman, Aric almirola, and William Byron would be due to the nature of playoff format. The playoff format is playoff driver wins a playoff race and you are in the next round. Based on I what I said, it would be possible Dibenedetto being in the final 4 at homestead if he makes to the playoffs. The fact is the team Dibenedetto is with is capable of winning at some tracks despite having outdated equipment and shows the flaw of NASCAR's playoff system. The nature of NASCAR's playoff system is you can suck at 1.5 mile tracks, but you can make Homestead by winning races that are not on 1.5 mile tracks. As bad as I am painting this in terms of how NASCAR determines a champion, this could be even worse next year since the final race at Phoenix. 335. Mile501 posted: 08.18.2019 - 3:55 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @332 - Last year, Aric Almirola squeaked into the playoffs in 14th spot and had just 1 playoff point. He ended the season 5th in points. Drivers in those last 4 spots can still compete for the championship (though whether or not that's fair is an entirely different conversation). I think we may see even more of that this year. For example, Jones (14th) recently scored 4 straight top 5s. Bowyer (17th) had 4 top 5s in an 8-race span earlier this season. This year, moreso than in past years, will likely feature a full field of 16 playoff drivers who, depending on how things play out, all have a realistic chance of making the final four. 336. Again, we look at the word popular differently. I felt it was popular because it said he was back or not finished as a driver when many people felt he was finished. After that race you didn't hear those words "he's washed up" for the rest of his life anymore. It was 1999 and he was hearing 1987 boos again. It was great. Take your hater contacts out. I think a lot of people at the track didn't see what people saw on TV when Labonte roughed him up coming to the white flag. I left my uncle's house that night thrilled for Dale. Especially him having the unfair disadvantage of having to pit on the backstretch then when those guys had to follow the pace car all the way to the pits while the guys on the front stretch could pit right away. Honestly though, the week before at Michigan is when I knew he was back to true form. Him going up to pass Tony Stewart for the lead about three quarters in at a track he wasn't historically as good as he was at Darlington, 'dega, Bristol, Daytona or Atlanta still gives me chills to this day. The Truck and Cup series both had patterns of back to back last and first place finishes. 1 & 2) In the Truck Series, Stewart Friesen finished last at Pocono on July 27th. The very next race would be at Eldora on August 1st, Friesen wins. That very same Eldora race, Austin Hill finished last. Hill went on to win the very next race at Michigan on August 10th. 3) In the Cup Series, on July 28th, Denny Hamlin won Pocono while Chase Elliott finished last. Chase Elliott would proceed to dominate from the pole at Watkins Glen the very next race on August 4th. 4 & 5) Following the Watkins Glen race, we would see Kevin Harvick win at Michigan on August 11th. For the final race for the Cup Series in the month of August (Darlington isn't until September 1st), we would head to Bristol. The night after Tyler Reddick won officially from starting last in the Xfinity Series on August 16th, Kevin Harvick would finish dead last on August 17th after winning at Michigan the week before Bristol. Denny Hamlin once again won at Bristol. Here's the kicker to this pattern; Denny Hamlin won the first at Pocono when Chase Elliott finished last before Chase won the week after. Denny Hamlin won the week after Kevin Harvick won all while Kevin finished last after his win. This all happened in a four race stretch! 344.
