"Grand National Scene" magazine was brought back to publish a special promotional issue for the race, its first since it ended publication in 2009. Jayski.com also backdated its website for the week to give it its old 1990s look for this race and to celebrate its 23rd anniversary. Lots of teams are running throwback schemes again. William Byron's #24 has a recreation of the #46 City Chevrolet racer from the movie "Days of Thunder" with bonus points going toward Hendrick Motorsports having provided the real cars for the production of the movie. Humorously, they announced this scheme by doing a joke sketch for Twitter where Byron, crew chief Chad Knaus, and the whole #24 team reenacted the scene from "Days of Thunder" that introduces Tom Cruise's Cole Trickle character in the film (albeit with Byron rolling up in a brand new Corvette instead of a motorcycle) using one of the #46 Luminas from the movie. Jimmie Johnson continues the trend of cool Hendrick throwbacks this year as his Ally #48 Chevrolet has the 90s-tastic white, purple, and orange lightning bolt scheme that he used on his Chevrolet trophy truck he raced off-road back in 1995. He ran these colors before in the Baja 1000 now let's see how they do in the Southern 500. Alex Bowman the Showman has his #88 AXALTA entry done up in recreation of the red-and-gold #25 Folgers Chevrolet Tim Richmond had all that success with back in 1986. Chase Elliott meanwhile has his #9 Chevrolet done up in a paint scheme to recreate the 1981 #9 Mell-Gear Ford Thunderbird his father Bill Elliott drove back in the day...and sat on the pole with at Darlington. 6. Aric Almirola's Smithfield #10 has Smoke's orange, white, and black scheme from his first title in 2002, Daniel Suarez has the almost all orange look he won the crown with 2005 on his #41, and Clint Bowyer's #14 has the red-and-black colors of Stewart's last title in 2011 complete with Mobil 1 back on the quarter panels. Teammate Kevin Harvick's #4 doesn't have a throwback but has a bright orange Ford this week for a cross promotion with the Big Buck Hunter arcade video games. Brad Keselowski won this race last year with a Rusty Wallace throwback scheme. This year he'll try to repeat the feat as he and the #2 team bring back the black, yellow, red, and blue scheme Rusty drove back in 1996. Teammate Ryan Blaney has his Pennzoil #12 Ford done up to resemble Michael Waltrip's famous #30 Bahari Pontiac from back in the day. Austin Dillon's #3 has distinctly disco-era look, he's brought back his car owner and grandfather Richard Childress' old black-and-gold Black Gold #3 Oldsmobile scheme from the late 1970s. Teammate Daniel Hemric's #8 Chevy has a gray-and-red scheme to show off Caterpillar's original company colors before they adopted their famous yellow. They've even put a mock tractor grill graphic on the hood and decals representing tracks on the side. 7. A son of a gun with a taste for fun and more than his share of pride." B.J. McLeod will look to be more of a backstretch blazer than a real hellraiser and racetrack romeo as his #51 Jacob Companies entry has the red and yellow colors of the infamous Clyde Torkel Chicken Pit Special from Burt Reynolds' 1983 movie "Stoker Ace." Thankfully McLeod lucks out with a joke message of "Best Builders in the South" instead of Burt's "Fastest Chicken in the South." 8. RaceFanX posted: 08.27.2019 - 2:18 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) As TeamDCRfan mentioned Landon Cassill's #00 Chevrolet has a Sterling Marlin tribute, specifically recreating the Coors Light Silver Bullet he drove to much success in the early 2000s after Dodge reentered NASCAR. Mark Martin drove the #6 Valvoline Ford to victory in the Southern 500 back in 1993. This year Roush Fenway Racing honors that win by bringing back the famous design of the #6 Thunderbird for Ryan Newman's Ford Fusion in this race. The car is sponsored by Oscar Mayer this week and done up in the company's red, orange, and yellow colors instead of Valvoline's red, white, and blue. Teammate Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. doesn't have throwbacks but has a black car this week to promote the new reality show "Dog's Most Wanted" with Duane "Dog" Chapman's face on the side of his car. Denny Hamlin is paying tribute to Darrell Waltrip this week after his retirement from announcing earlier this year. His #11 is painted to look like DW's Western Auto racer from the early to mid-1990s. Kyle Busch has a sweet sponsor-related throwback as Snickers candy bars have adorned his #18 Toyota with the delectable white, red, and brown scheme that the Stavola Brothers team and Bobby Hillin, Jr. raced with back in 1990. That scheme never won back in the day but I think it's got a good chance to do so this time. The other two Gibbs cars both feature personal throwbacks. Martin Truex, Jr.'s Bass Pro Shops #19 has the scheme from when he and the outdoor supply chain won the NASCAR Busch Series championship driving for Dale Earnhardt, Jr's old Chance2 team back in 2004. Erik Jones meanwhile will make his 100th career Cup start in a black-and-red Toyota inspired by his old late model. Paul Menard and the Wood Brothers are honoring Glen Wood after his passing earlier this year. Their #21 throwback recreates the Ford Sunliner Glen drove himself back in the day. This is an ultra rare Convertible series throwback since that's what Glen ran in when he raced at Darlington that year. They even added a yellow stripe to recreate the Sunliner's trim. Corey LaJoie is looking to Crunch the competition with a blue-and-white #32 that recreates Dale Jarrett's old Nestle Crunch candy bar-backed #32 Busch series racer. The Front Row cars have some cool looks for this race. Michael McDowell's #34 Dockside Logistics Ford will be hard to miss with its powder blue livery recreating the old Alka-Seltzer #52 Pontiac Jimmy "Smut" Means (a former Front Row partner) raced in the late 80s-early 90s. Matt Tifft's #36 has a cool blue scheme recreating the dirt late model car of Michigan short track legend David Hilliker (who is still active BTW) as his father owned Hilliker's car back in the day. David Ragan's #38 has a championship-winning look as the Shriners Hospitals for Children Ford has the blue-and-gold colors of the Ford Torino that the late David Pearson raced to the Cup title in 1968 and 1969. Bubba Wallace has an emotional throwback as his #43 will celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Victory Junction Gang Camp by running the green, red, and purple Spree Phone Cards paint scheme Adam Petty made famous in ASA, ARCA, and NASCAR Busch series action. The camp was a dream of Adam's that his father Kyle Petty brought to fruition after his passing. Ryan Preece and the JTG-Daugherty Racing team are again having a little fun with being the #47 as they are bringing back the late Ron Bouchard's red-and-blue Hawaiian Punch colors from the mid-1980s. The scheme also honors Preece's grandfather Bob Judkins who died last fall. Matt DiBenedetto and the Leavine Family Racing team, hot off nearly winning at Bristol, will supposedly have a scheme honoring the old Toyota Celica IMSA GTO entries from the 1980s. I don't think they've released what that scheme will look like yet though. I bet no one ever expected a Willy T. Ribbs throwback livery at this race. 9. Forecast currently has a chance of a thunderstorm Sunday afternoon into the evening. Monday, Tuesday look wet in Darlington, so hopefully we race Sunday 16. rm posted: 08.27.2019 - 7:41 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Interesting that Front Row Joe is making an appearance, his first Cup race since filling in for David Ragan (filling in for Kyle Busch himself) at Atlanta in 2015...a race in which he touched off the mile-and-a-half version of the big one by chopping off Greg Biffle heading into turn 3, leading to a jumbled-up finishing order. 17. rm posted: 08.27.2019 - 7:43 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) It's highly unlikely the track and TV would agree to moving up a Cup race a full day if NASCAR proposed it. What is happening this weekend in Florida, though, is not indicative of what happens on a typical Labor Day weekend. I did some research on this topic. Statistically, a hurricane impacts Florida (some part of Florida, not necessarily Daytona) about once every 10 years on Labor Day weekend. Most of those were category 1 or 2 hurricanes. So, while there certainly is a possibility that a hurricane could disrupt the final regular season race at Daytona, there is not a high probability. I do wonder, though, what NASCAR would do in such a situation. Postponing a race to a different weekend isn't as easy as it was in 1998 or 2001, the last two times they had to do it. 42. GuidoGang posted: 08.29.2019 - 3:38 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) Doesnt matter honestly if a hurricane hits the exact day. Hurricanes within a week could cause multiple programs: power outages, flooding, having people in the area out of state. Anybody getting hurt during a race wouldn't look good. Honestly, it would be smarter to switch Talladega to the cutoff race, hurricanes are way less common in October, as well as daily seabreeze thunderstorms impacting the weekend yearly. 43. As noted above Garrett Smithley has a #54 painted in Lennie Pond's powder blue with red and blue stripes 1976 Pepsi livery, I guess that explains why the #54 was entered when the #53 wasn't. J.J. Yeley's #52 has been given a simple white paint scheme to pay tribute to NASCAR pioneer Bill Blair, specifically recreating the #2 Oldsmobile Blair won with on the Daytona Beach and Road Course in the early 1953. They've even added some chrome decals to their Camaro as a callback to the styling of that 1953 Olds along with a reference to the Ware team's hometown of High Point, North Carolina since Blair's car listed on the quarterpanel that it was based in Daytona (Blair was sponsored by a local car dealer). Kyle Larson's Ricky Craven 1995 Kodiak throwback is interesting in that it includes orange numbers on the side, recreating that car's really rare original look. Craven drove with orange numbers at the Daytona 500 but ditched them pretty early on in the season, they experimented with green later but most famously used white numbers throughout most of Craven's tenure in that car including all of 1996 (including Talladega in the spring of that year when Craven took that wild ride up into the catch fence). Granted all of the die cast cars of Craven's car from that era featured the orange numerals and the Ganassi team put out a video in the lead up to this race joking that one of those toys inspired Larson's scheme. 55. They've got about, oh, 4.4 billion (and some change) reasons why they control that, for better or for worse. And the track would take a whole lot of issue in starting the race hours earlier than advertised, especially considering the gates today didn't even open until 5 hours before scheduled on-air time. Back in the days before billion-dollar TV contracts, when some of the tracks were still paying networks to air their races live, the sanctioning body had the first say in that matter. Hasn't been that way since NASCAR took control of selling the whole season as a television contract about 20 years ago or so and splitting it up between networks accordingly. 97. That was some great racing! This is the 13th win for Joe Gibbs Racing, now marked with all four drivers winning in 2019. Third time(?) all four drivers won in a single season; 2015 & 2016 were the other two. 2015 & 2016 they were all multiple winners though. Let's see if Erik Jones can win another before season's out. Also, with Indianapolis being the last race of the regular season, the 26th race of the year, Joe Gibbs has now safely won 25% of the schedule. Denny Hamlin lost a lot of laps. At least 10 laps. This will be the first time in his career in both Xfinity and Cup he finished off the lead laps. Right after he was disqualified after winning the Xfinity race and ended up finishing dead last. 2019 is not a decent year for Denny Hamlin at all. This is the first time a driver has clinched the regular season championship since the reward was implemented with the "stage racing" era in 2017. Christopher Bell is driving circles around those guys this year, and if you put them into JGR Cup cars they will probably run about the same that JJ Yeley and Jason Leffler did. Now for the 2015 ?Kentucky switch? which seems to always be the talking point of bitterness as to JGR's success and why the other (particularly Chevy) teams can't compete, it's been almost half a decade since. Teams work on their cars every year and new teams will either rise or fall to the front. Hell, we're at an age of a racing package where you can go wide open at 1.5 milers and almost not brake at Darlington. If the other teams still haven't found a way to catch up after almost 5 years, then that's on them by this point. 260. He nearly won Pocono last year, by the way. 261. racefangurl posted: 09.02.2019 - 4:36 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 140, Chase is Bill, Jr., but when he was little somebody thought he didn't look like a Bill and nicknamed him Chase. 262. Now there are only two spots left. 263. possum posted: 09.02.2019 - 9:12 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) @133 - actually, no-one knows why they have competition cautions. Half the time when they have them none of the teams change tires, so it's obviously not to check tire wear (at Darlington, of course, you change tires every chance you get, you don't need a competition caution to tell you that. @154 - folk who are interested in racing (unlike NASCAR, who are interested in entertainment) know that high horsepower, low traction (i.e. low downforce) is the way to go. That's why dirt late models and 410 sprints are such good racing. @225 - the car owner limit was never 5. Before it was 4 the limit was 2. Cars would be entered under the name of the real owner's wife, or son, or father, to get around the 2 car limit (off-hand I can't think of anyone running more than 5 cars, and only Roush and Hendrick did that, but theoretically you could have run as many as you could make up names for). Now, of course, NASCAR doesn't allow that - you have to have a clearly unrelated "affilate" owner to have 5 cars. 264. From what I've gathered, he's from the Bahamas, which got decimated by Hurricane Dorian. Makes you wonder what that person you always gave hell is actually going through. 265. When the dust settled very early in the morning Landon and StarCom had raised $14,560. I watched 35 out of 36 races in 2019 start to finish. This is the one I missed. It was Labor Day, so there was no work Monday and I spent the day partying with buddies. I wound up passed out on somebody's couch for most of the race. I woke up late at night with the race on, saw Jones about to win, and thought nothing of it because I was too messed up to speak English. Part of my brain said "This is actually happening, sober you would be freaking out right now" and the other part said "What planet are we on?" I'm a Christian and never go partying on Sundays. I did on this one, and God gave me an unusual and ironic form of punishment. Because of that mistake, I haven't seen my favorite driver (live) win a Cup race since 2014, and that was the non-points All-Star Race. And unless he wins a championship, this will likely be the biggest win in Erik Jones' career, considering the pressure he was under and the fork he was at last year with Gibbs. Bummer, but you live and learn right? 272.
