Since we all know about it now, look for his bad luck streak to continue through the Playoffs due to "intentional underestimation." Per Mannoroth's idealism. 7. Now this could change if I see that one of these four look to have a good enough car to win one of these races but this is who I'm picking now to be eliminated. 10. Mile501 posted: 09.11.2019 - 9:43 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) In 2018, we had 15 drivers who were legitimate contenders for the playoffs. There would have been a tight battle for the 16th spot had Austin Dillon not won the Daytona 500, but no driver below 15th was all that competitive anyway. In 2019, we had 18 drivers who were legitimate contenders for the playoffs, including a very close battle for the final two positions. In 2020, I predict that number will climb again and that we will seee between 21 and 24 drivers be legitimate contenders for the playoffs. There are no driver changes among the top 18 drivers from this season, and no reason to think that entire group won't all be contenders once again. We need to add to the group of 2020 playoff contenders Matt DiBenedetto, Christopher Bell, and Chris Buescher (based on his continually improving performance). There could be others added as well, depending on what happens with Tyler Reddick, Cole Custer, and the #17 team (Stenhouse is signed through 2021, but there have been some rumors concerning that team). Time will tell how things play out, but at this point in time, 2020 looks to feature the most competitive playoff field we've seen yet. 11. racefangurl posted: 09.11.2019 - 3:33 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Would somebody that doesn't have a Cup ride, like Regan Smith for example, be reached out to for David Ragan's old ride? Harvick was absolute garbage the first lap he went out. He couldn't even turn the thing without almost wrecking. He barely made it one lap and brought it in. I shouldn't have doubted them. Seven out of the first 12 qualifiers aren't in the Chase. Although I agree with @37 I could see one of them hijacking a win away, most notably Austin Dillon. I could see him unexpectedly winning a race like this. Would like to see Hemric win if Happy can't. KuBu over a mile and half faster than Larson. Ouch. 40. Mile501 posted: 09.14.2019 - 6:59 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I'm glad they went back to single-car qualifying runs a few months ago. It at least increases the chances that we'll see an interesting starting lineup. The 6 drivers who have been the best overall this season begin the playoffs by qualifying 3rd, 13th, 18th, 20th, 22nd, and 24th. Meanwhile, 5 drivers who rank outside the top 20 in points qualified in the top 12 (Hemric & Dillon for RCR, McDowell & Ragan for FRM, and Stenhouse). Finally, I wouldn't be too concerned about Toyota. This season, they have 1 pole but 13 wins. Case in point: In the 3 races leading up to Indy, Kyle Busch qualified outside the top 20 but finished in the top 6 each time. 41. Mile501 posted: 09.14.2019 - 7:06 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Since the playoff field expanded to 16 drivers in 2014, a non-playoff driver has never won a playoff race. Not once. With this being an impound race, some teams probably elected to set up for the cooler evening temps of the race just take a hit for qualifying which took place in the heat of the day. 44. Mile501 posted: 09.14.2019 - 7:43 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @42 - You may well be right. But Johnson has talked about how much happier he is since the mid-season crew chief swap, and he may also feel less pressure in a way by not being in the playoffs. He can just race for wins with nothing to lose. We may continue to see all playoff races won by playoff drivers. But if anyone outside the playoffs gets a win (aside from something crazy happening at Talladega), I'd say Johnson has the best chance. 45. It was utter chaos in all three races last year with several big wrecks in each race, but we've only had a few minor incidents through the truck and Xfinity races. That being said, the two best drivers (Chastain and Bell) combined to lead 246/334 laps in the two races, but both finished second to Austin Hill and Tyler Reddick, who led 29 and 30 laps respectively and used strategy to get to victory lane on the last, long green-flag run. Hopefully we'll be able to see a good one tonight with some drama to keep things interesting and I think passing will be much easier than in the spring. Also whoever dominates this race better watch out, because the trends this weekend say they won't win (also because I've written about this, they won't because of Mannoroth's Rule). 49. I don't think there is any way that Almirola, Bowyer, Newman, or Bowman make it past the first round. Almirola hasn't shown speed all year, Bowyer is just way too inconsistent, Newman is driving a car that is barely even good enough to compete for a top 10, and since Bowman has fallen like a rock since he won Chicago. I also think people have been sleeping on Larson. He has shown speed lately and if his luck can turn around I think he can make some noise in the playoffs. 51. Sector posted: 09.15.2019 - 3:40 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Believe it or not, Clint Bowyer (10.6) came into this race with the fourth highest average start of all Cup drivers behind Kevin Harvick (7.8), Joey Logano (9.2) and Brad Keselowski (10.0) and just ahead of Denny Hamlin (10.7). With Brad starting 18th and Clint on the pole, looks like the gap will be closed to tied if not tied (I haven't done the calculations yet). Joey is going to take a hit starting 22nd and Denny starting 13th will fall a bit behind Clint with 9 races to go after this race. It's look more and more as Kevin Harvick will have the best average start of the season in 2019. Anything can happen with 9 races to go, but he's getting faster and faster as the season winds down in terms of qualifying and race speed. 52.
