I'd like to see Magnussen however give NASCAR a go. I know he's driven a dirt sprint car before so who knows. Magnussen however is more likely to try NASCAR than Grojean. 7. He finished 32nd (DNF) last year, not 30th. Also to note last year with less than 10 laps to go Kyle Busch mentioned in an interview last week that he "followed everyone off the cliff" when everyone failed to enter turn 1 interestingly. I'd be very curious to see if that'll happen again this year. I doubt we'll get as exciting a finish as we did last year but I would love to see another chaos. I'm choosing Matt DiBenedetto to win this week to hold off Martin Truex, Jr. 11. Canadianfan posted: 09.24.2019 - 8:15 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) GEN7 info. The initial left-handed entry into the chicane is a lot sharper and the two right-handers are a lot deeper into the infield, meaning drivers likely won't be able to just breeze right through. Can't wait to see it in action. 15. Anonymous posted: 09.25.2019 - 8:16 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I think Truex will win this weekend. He is on fire lately and is bringing a lot of momentum. What does these drivers all have in common since the Modern Era (1972)? They've each won 3 consecutive races at the Cup level. Martin Truex, Jr, while coming into this race after winning back to back races for the first time in his entire NASCAR career (Cup and Xfinity Series) at Las Vegas and Richmond, is looking to join this elite group of drivers to accomplish such a feat. Last year at this inaugural racetrack he came just a corner shy after such a chaotic finish (getting rear ended by Jimmie Johnson which prevented him from the win). Look at him to be a huge favorite to win here, especially with how incredibly strong he's been at road courses since 2017! Martin Truex is also looking to join Joey Logano (2015) as the second ever driver to sweep the entire round of the Playoff since they went the 3 round elimination structure back in 2014. Joey did it in the second round of the Chase (It was called the Chase then) and Martin is looking to do it in the first round of the Playoff. Martin is definitely the driver to watch out for this weekend! 25. Sector posted: 09.27.2019 - 2:57 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) More for statistician from my post #24 on Modern Era stats. Of those who has won at least three in a row (Johnson won four in a row in 2007), only four times has a driver never lead the most laps during those consecutive wins. Rusty Wallace in 1988, Jimmie Johnson in both 2004 and 2007 and Brad Keselowski in 2018. Surprisingly, Jimmie Johnson did NOT lead the most laps in any of his seven wins (three in a row in 2004 and four in a row in 2007). Brad Keselowski did not lead the most laps in any races in either Cup or Xfinity the entire 2018 season. Rusty Wallace in 1988 simply didn't dominate in two very competitive races when he came out on time until Rockingham, and even then Bill Elliott lead 217 laps to his 200 at that race for his third consecutive win. Martin Truex, Jr could very well join this interesting list if he can pull off the win this weekend. Joey Logano and Kyle Busch both lead the most laps at Vegas and Richmond when Martin won. Last year Kyle Larson lead the most laps and Truex put himself in position to win by surviving last year in his "oh-so close yet so far" situation. 26. Byron will be the winner of the tiebreaker has he has 5 runner-up starting positions (2nd). Kevin has 4. Is this a sign Byron wins it with 7 races remaining after this weekend? Although it's thought to be difficult to pass on any road course as compared to ovals, data shows far *more* passes in an average race on a track such as this than a boring track like Richmond. All things considered, I wouldn't panic if my favorite driver didn't qualify in the top 10 as long as he has top-quality equipment. But I would be concerned about Newman & KuBu (23rd & 24th, yikes) and Elliott & Almirola have a lot of work to do too. 38. William Byron won the pole here at Charlotte (as a sweep of crown jewel also winning the Daytona 500, World 600 and Southern 500 poles) back in May as well, and qualified second at the other road courses at Sonoma and Watkins Glen, but winning the pole at the road course (ROVAL) configuration at Charlotte, all in 2019. While Byron (12.7) is 5 positions behind Kevin Harvick (7.5) in average starting position entering this race, it has been quite an impressive year despite it being up and down in qualifying for William Byron. 39. Newgarden turned six laps with a (unofficial) fast lap of 1:07.2, which is over 13 seconds quicker than William Byron's pole-winning time on the same day. And while Newgarden had no previous experience running the track, that sort of gap between an IndyCar and a stock car isn't that surprising. IndyCar machines have a much higher power-to-weight ratio and a ton of downforce that sticks the car to the track. It was the first time an open-wheel Indy racer turned laps at Charlotte in 20 years, since the ill-fated 1999 IRL race that was run on the oval. That race was cut short and cancelled after three spectators were killed from flying debris and a wheel that flew into the stands from a multi-car crash. 44. Newman starts this elimination race in 9th place with a 14 point cushion over Alex Bowman (13th) but could be in some trouble here. Byron (12th in points) & Bowman start up front and even though both Chevys are highly unlikely to finish anywhere near where they start, top 10s might be good enough if they can achieve those; Blaney (10th) has been strong and surely has confidence at this track; Clint Bowyer (14th) looks pretty good and KuBu seems to be heading forward as noted above. Many racing series have the rule that the driver who causes the yellow starts at the rear, and it works well (and, of course, if the car really wouldn't restart it'll end up there anyway, so it's not a penalty in that case). The only thing it didn't have was an intense race for the win on the last lap, but, my goodness, what a crazy race. I think NASCAR screwed up the cautions quite a bit. THe Preece and Stenhouse spins obviously didn't warrant a yellow, but there were two incidents that did and there wasn't a caution: Matt Tifft sitting in a smoke screen in the middle of the freaking track around a blind corner and the last lap hard crash between Newman, Suarez, and Hemric. However, props to NASCAR for being economical with the cautions and running minimally under caution (for the most part, Smithley laying oil down was the exception). I think Kyle Busch's reason for DNFing should be "quit" because he just turned around and parked the car when the red flag was waved. Incredible comebacks by both Elliott and Bowman, who both wrecked (Bowman twice) and rebounded for top twos. All four Hendrick cars finish in the top 9. I think Newman's move on Suarez was a bit iffy, but props to Suarez for not throwing punches and just talking it out. Bowman spinning Wallace was also pretty iffy, but the water in the face wasn't warranted in the least. That came off as disrespectful. Sector posted: 09.29.2019 - 9:35 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) #318 Yes, since the last race of the regular season Kyle Busch has been falling apart. Engine failure at Indianapolis, the issue with a lapped car (Garrett Smithley, who I'll say again finished one lap and one position ahead of Kyle Busch in this race LOL!) at Las Vegas, getting straight up beaten by Martin Truex, Jr at Richmond and quitting the ROVAL race. Joey Logano has been somewhat inconsistent is why Kyle has been able to keep up, however with a slow start to the season Kevin Harvick and Martin Truex, Jr are both catching up. Kevin Harvick is now only 4 points behind Kyle Busch in the non-Playoff standings. Martin Truex is only 60 points back by the way, not 68. 60 is max points so he's in the gap of catching up as well. Regardless Kyle Busch had quite the average finish all year in the 6.0's and 7.0's, but is now 9.3. Kevin Harvick becomes just the second driver to reach 20 Top 20's in 2019. Kyle Busch achieved it first 6 races ago at Bristol. Luckily Hamlin didn't finish better than he did otherwise Kyle's Top 5 has been still tied with Hamlin for most this season at 14, with Brad Keselowski and Martin Truex next in line at 12. This is the fourth time Chase Elliott led the most laps in 2019, third best. He led one more lap than Kevin Harvick, who has already led the most laps in five races this season (plus two more at one of the twin Daytona races for the Daytona 500 & the All-Star race at Charlotte for seven altogether). Kyle obviously has done so eight times leading all drivers. Interesting to note; 6 drivers has perfectly finished Top 10's in two races in the track's existence so far. Jimmie Johnson and Joey Logano are the only ones to finish in the Top 10 without a Top 5. Joey Logano finished 10th in both races while Jimmie finished 9th today and 8th last year. Chase Elliott and Kevin Harvick, the two who led the most laps in today's race finishing 1st and 3rd today, were 6th and 9th last year respectfully. Only Clint Bowyer and Alex Bowman finished in the Top 5 in both races so far. Kyle Busch has entered this race in both 2018 and 2019 as the points leader in scoring the most points without the Playoffs. Statistically that turns out to be bad luck so far for the "points leader," as Kyle Busch does not finish in either races. Kyle Busch is the only driver with multiple starts (two starts) at the track in the Cup series where he has yet to finish a race here. 321. Especially seeing some of the drivers who are in much better physical shape than Kyle look absolutely beat on pit road postrace. Race control was absolutely brutal for both races this weekend. I'm usually one to defend almost any decision they make but it seemed like they were throwing darts to see if an incident warranted a caution or not. Very hard to understand how incidents like Preece and Stenhouse's spins needed to be cautions when they got out of the way and refired quickly. Did the 17 even lose more than one position in his little excursion? Anyway. Cool to see the 9 come back and win but this race was definitely hard to watch at points near the end with all the stopping and starting. Not really sure I understood how some cautions were over and done with in a lap and a half and some took multiple laps for what looked like minimal cleanup. 325. And its how he won that reminded me of something years back I mean I remember Dale Jr. at Talladega after the Biggest Talladega Big One in 03 came back and won and made numerous stops like 15 or so, to win that reminded me a bit of that, Now as far as Bubba Wallace goes what he did on Bowman went too far, You don't poor Powerade on someones face when the man is already tired, Exhausted, Dyhydhrtaed etc., and still comes back and finishes 2nd. Since the roval is still a fairly new track, older, more experienced drivers don't necessarily have as much of an advantage as they do everywhere else. And since it's part road course, equipment (aero) doesn't matter quite as much either. With the playing field more level, Elliott, Bowman, and Byron all showed us that they're able to get the job done. Anonymous posted: 09.30.2019 - 12:02 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Whatever the flag is a the beginning of a lap is what NASCAR scores that lap as in the official breakdown. It doesn't matter if the caution comes out when the leader is in turn 1 or turn 4, it won't count as a caution until the next lap. Only exception seems to be the final lap, if the caution flag comes out before the leader takes the checkered flag then the last lap does get scored as a caution lap and the margin of victory is "under caution." Personally I prefer how NASCAR scores it, there are other series that will count the lap the caution flag comes out on as the first lap under caution even if the leader is about to pass the line and 90% of the lap was green. Both ways are inherently flawed, though; one method will understate the overall time spent under caution while the other overstates it. 350. I mean the fastest car won and bounced back from a mistake. The cautions were a little exhausting but to say it was fixed when Chase Elliott made up those spots from having the fastest car and outperforming everyone despite a mistake, I'd hardly call that fixed. Sure the caution wasn't necessary in the Stenhouse incident (the Ryan Preece one you're speaking of I don't remember, but I'm not doubting it happened), but it is what it is, the race itself was exciting and the best car won after overcoming adversity. Bill also ran really well on road courses even though he didn't win on them but once in Cup and once in what was called Busch series back then. It's obvious to me that when it comes to Cup racing it's Truex, Elliott, and Kyle Busch and then everyone else overall at road courses.
