I wish there were more teams in the cup series we need more underfunded
teams or top 20-13 teams. if only the charter system didnt do this or
nascar doing it.. its sad seeing 38 cars its kinda like a truck series
field

@6 It would be nice to see 40-43 cars in a race. But that really won't
happen unless there's a big purse. Aside the 36 charter cars, the other
4 spots don't have any guaranteed money. Only $2.8 million are to be
fought among them for all year, which isn't a lot. Also, that money will
be distributed to charter cars in 2021, meaning next year open teams
don't get prize money at all. So yeah, don't expect 40 cars anywhere
else except the plate races and crown jewels.

I'll be attending this race for the first time since 2013. Not expecting
it to be like the 2013 race again but should be a lot of fun

The way the race looks to be set up, it probably will not be great, but
might be a decent race on restarts. I hope that we can not have a 2019
Kyle Busch show, but who knows?

We don't need a bunch of field fillers who will cause stupid cautions,
slow down the leaders or even start and park. Most of these extra teams
are not qualified for a top level of motorsports. For the sake of
quality, I would have no problem with a 30 car field or even less than
that. Most of the worlds racing series don't use more than 25 cars on a
normal basis.

@7 most likely read whatever he found that statement on incorrectly.
Because that literally would make no sense. Even Start and Parks in ARCA
get prize money then bonuses are distributed at the end of the season.
Literally no prize money would never make sense because that's
essentially saying pay $70-100k a race for 36 races or hell even less
than five and not get anything in return until November. The 1/3 of a
race purse per race makes sense but your statement makes no sense whatsoever

People need to understand that even though it's only 38 cars all of them
have the intent to race. People tell me about we used to have 43 or more
a week (which is true and those were good old days) but maybe 35-36
actually intended to race. Even in Nationwide there would be 7-8 a race
and they'd be running less than 30 laps. Start and Parks are teams too
but whether or not they run in a race solely dictates the outcome,
entertainment, or any other factors in the race. Yes there's less
entries but they are quality entries

13, Well I dont know about quality entries but they are there and will
run the full race and make a profit doing it.. the 15, 77, 51, 52, 53,
00 (Although I think SCR is the most potential to be a decent team even
if they brought in a pay driver and screwed LC) the others seem to be
there just to collect a check and make a profit. This is just the
chartered teams not counting the 54 and 27 when they decide to run. I
hope I'm wrong and these team do wan't to get better but that will be
told in time but Premium has been here for a long time with only getting
marginally better.

I looked back at the article, and I might have misread it. It stated this:

"Additionally, $2.8 million previously available to non-charter?or
?open??teams in the race purse will be directed toward charter teams."

I assumed that 2.8 million was the only amount open teams received and
would be lost to charters. Terribly sorry for any confusion.

@16 you're good. Still a stupid rule, but that statement makes more sense.

From what I interpreted, this means that across the 36 races, a total of
$2.8M of the purse will head to Charter teams (around $78K per race),
but the bonuses will remain at the end of the season.

I don't like it, but that makes sense now. We'll have to see how this
affects non-charter teams who it seems will need to make the majority of
their money off sponsors or other means of revenue.

Las Vegas ratings were up huge over last year. Some of that may be due
to the national attention that Newman's crash got. Either way, I think
the sport is trending in the right direction again, especially
considering many other leagues (like the NBA) have experienced a ratings
dip.

This will be the first NASCAR race in California after the passing of
retired NBA legend Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and seven other
people in a helicopter crash January 26. Both Ryan Blaney and William
Byron will be running purple-and-yellow LA Lakers-themed tribute schemes
to honor Bryant in this race while Daniel Suarez has Laker-colored
gloves and shoes for the same purpose. NASCAR is having a #24 painted on
the infield grass to honor Bryant, he wore that number for LA during the
second half of his basketball career.

Auto Club Speedway announces the purse for this race is $7.4M, which is
$2M more than any purse announced for a Cup race at the speedway
(1997-2015).

Don't know how much the purses were for 2016-2019, but it's good to hear
improvement.

poorly manner? He is currently leading the Rookie of the Year standings
entering this race...

@27 it's only 2 races in, you gotta figure Bell will improve over the
course of the season and Reddick and Custer are just getting settled,
Nemechek has done good for the equipment he has been given but at the
end of the day I just don't see him competing with those other rookies
in better teams

I know it's only 2 races and it won't stay this way, but still, who
would have thought that Nemechek and Poole would be 1-2 in the ROTY
standings?

And to think, Nemechek nearly earned a much better finish than he got at
Las Vegas.

Around the time Penske bought Indy I recall Robin Miller saying NASCAR
was a few years away from 25 car fields and a much shorter schedule.
What the "smaller fields will make for better racing" people are missing
is the drop from 43 to 40 resulted in the typical 30th place car now
being as uncompetitive as the typical 40th place car pre-Charters was. A
drop to a 25 car field would eventually start resembling F1's lack of
competitive balance. Even now among the 4-car teams the gap between the
team's best car and worst is clearly widening. About the only positive I
could think of is the 4-car teams (and maybe even the 3-car teams) would
become a thing of the past, either naturally or through a long-overdue
rule change further limiting team sizes.

When was the last time an entry list had no changes from one race to the
next?

By that I mean, all 38 drivers in this race were the only 38 drivers in
the last race, and they're all in the same car number. Even the 3 Rick
Ware Racing cars stayed consistent somehow.

The field size of 43 was just a number that most of the tracks at the
time could handle as far as garage size and pit spaces. Short tracks had
to make some special arrangements to go past 36, but NASCAR didn't want
to set the full field that low on the tracks that could handle more, so
this was a compromise.

I have always known It as 42 + the past champions provisional which was
introduced in 1991 for the King after he missed 4 races in 1989. Outside
of short tracks in the 80's in was 40 starters a lot of the time.

Daytona was 42 starters most of the time back then. Then you have
situations like 1978 and 1979 which for no particular reason had 41 for

@41 - you've never heard of Richard Petty? 43 was chosen as the past
champion's provisional in his honor (as opposed to just making the 42nd
spot the PCP). After a couple of years of only using the 43rd spot if a
past champion needed it, NASCAR decided that since all the tracks could
accomodate 43 cars (*) they'd just start 43 in all races.

(* this actually was a really stupid idea, and reflects how NASCAR let
greed override good sense in that era. The short tracks, which
previously had typically started 36, couldn't handle more and racing was
pretty crappy until 8 or 10 cars dropped out. Had there actually been
some intelligence at the helm they'd have stayed at 36 (making the 36th
the PCP if they had to) on the short tracks, 44 on the cookie-cutters,
and 50 on the big tracks where pit road was long enough. Of course, back
then there was no problem finding 50 cars for a race.)

Sometimes that was true; other times it wasn't. Go check out seasons
such as 2001 and 2007, when there were 43 or more legitimate,
well-funded teams that showed up every week to race.

@55 To further that, I think the Cup series this year is as even at the
top as it's been in a while. Remember just 2 years ago when the "Big 3"
won like 75% of the races? This year, it feels like we've added
contenders in quality equipment like Matty D, Bell, Buescher in the 17,
etc. Making the Chase won't be a cakewalk.

This is a Tyler Reddick type track, and he was quick in practice. Here's
a driver who wasn't quick in practice: Erik Jones. 4 combined practice
sessions at Vegas/California, and Jones has yet to crack the top 20 in
any of them. Not great!

The top 10 is a mix of Chevy and Ford, not a single Toyota in the top 15.

Clint Bowyer's pole stats are strange. He earned 2 poles in 2007, 16
races apart. Then he went without a pole for 12 years. Now he has earned
2 more poles in the last 13 races.

@63 - McDowell has had several strong qualifying runs since NASCAR
returned to single-car qualifying. He had 4 starts of 11th or better in
the last 10 races of 2019.

Guys Don't judge on Toyota's slowness. The only big thing in qualifying
is pit selection. Daytona is Daytona, and Toyota hasn't been good the
past few races at Las Vegas. Also Toyota last year wasn't good at
qualifying (When they started doing single car qualifying). So don't
assume that Toyota will be slow this year. Also does Fontana have lights
because I heard that it will be raining all day and it would be dry at
night.

but they were significantly better at Las Vegas over the last couple of
years than they were this year.

Toyota has no speed. Look at practice for either Vegas or Cali. Whether
it's 10 lap average, 15 lap average or single lap speed, they are awful.
And obviously, that lack of speed translates to the race.

Joe Gibbs said last year that his team was just having a magical year,
and that it's super hard to be that fast every week so everyone should
enjoy it while it lasted. The Cup series is so competitive, at JGR has
definitely lost something this year. As a fan of competition, I am
excited that guys like Bowyer and Bowman will be fighting for the win.
AS a Jones fans, this sucks.

Another thing about Toyota that I think you guys need to know. Take a
look back at 2017 where in the first half JGR would struggle and have
issues. The team didn't go to victory lane until mid July. When they won
they started winning more, keep in mind. This was a lot like Harvick in
2019 where people wonder if he was going to win again and he had some
poor runs (Bristol 1, Kentucky for example). So Just keep in mind.

@88, to narrow it down more, it's 30% at 3pm EST, 40% from 4-8pm EST,
30% from 9-10pm EST, and then nothing after. Since Fontana has lights,
it could start around 10pm EST (7pm local), and get the race in by 2am
ESt (11pm local).

I'm looking at the radar on weather.com- raining right now but may stop

Jimmie Johnson, whom won the most races at this track (6 times) in the
Cup series, starts second at his home track. Jimmie Johnson is 20 laps
shy (980) from the 1,000 laps led mark at this track, which is a record
high. All eyes will be on him to see if he can be the first to achieve
such a feat.

His wife and daughters will be waving the green flag today (or tomorrow
if it rains out today) which most certainly be a memorable moment for
the Johnson family. This is also the track where Johnson scored his
first career Cup win back in 2002. Feels like a Jimmie Johnson day.

Only 25 laps in, but the racing has been nothing short of stellar, with
Bowman making a 3 wide pass for the lead. Unlike last week, those that
get stuck in traffic, are more easily able to pass. The Chevys and Fords
hold the top 10, with MTJ being the leading Toyota. Only complaint I
have is the trash all over the frontstretch and potential rain, but
otherwise looking good

Jimmie Johnson, perhaps his final start at the track due to him retiring
after the 2020 seeason, is running 3rd with 20 laps to go in Stage 1.
Running strong.

If 2020 is any induction how the first two races ran so far (not
counting the Daytona 500), Alex Bowman and Ryan Blaney (currently 1-2)
seem to be the fastest. What a huge difference of a season compared to
the 2017-2019 seasons.

To compare JGR to this race last year...Kyle Busch dominated that race
and won, while Hamlin and Truex both finished in the top 10. Jones ran
in the top 10 for much of the race before falling back late.

So to go from having all 4 teams running in the top 10 a year ago to
having them all run back in the teens is definitely a step in the wrong
direction.

This caution was a big break for several drivers, including Suarez who
will get back on the lead lap and Larson who is now just 1 lap down

Bowman wins at California. At the front it was quite the snoozer, but I
wouldn't blame NASCAR or the package for that. Just, the dominant cars
found the front at the beginning of the race and just stayed there.

And my man Guido got 13th after that nice late race rebound. He had top
10 speed there in the final laps

Jimmie Johnson led 10 laps today, only half of the 20 he needed to lead
to reach 1,000 laps led at the track. Shame he didn't get there, after
today Johnson will have led 990 total laps at Auto Club Speedway.

Is this the first time the Busch brothers finished on the podium without
either winning a race?

Had Bell's engine not blown, all 38 starters would have been running at

Decent race. Bowman had a dominant performance, giving Chevrolet and
Hendrick Motorsports, their first win of 2020. Toyota bounces back from
a mediocre Las Vegas. Kurt Busch and Chase got well needed top 5s.
Bowman could have a very Kyle Larson 2017 type season on his way. Blaney
was snakebit, by Mamba in the final laps, and finishes 19th, 1 lap down.
Bowyer, just didn't have the car on long runs, and wasn't helped by a
flat left front. Jimmie had great short run car, but he didn't have a
great final restart, but still enough to give him a 7th place finish in
his final race at his home track. Overall, restarts produced fantastic
racing, while on track battles, saw comers and goers. So far after 3
races, all 3 manufacturers have won, with a healthy mix of young and
old. 2020 looks bright

I'm not trying to get my ego out of reach, but honestly to the people
who say this boring, if you don't like it, don't watch it. I'm sure to
the people who say that if there favorite driver would say something
very different. And if Bowman won a boring race, while I would be happy,
I would still think the race it's self was boring. Not saying today was
boring. But a solid race all together.

scored a top 10 while his teammate, Austin Dillon, finished 24th, a lap

Just 3 races in, and only 1 driver (Harvick) has finished in the top 10
in all 3 races.

Out of 30 available top 10 finishes so far, 24 different drivers have
already earned at least one top 10 finish.

Great win by Bowman! Maybe Chevrolet & Hendrick will be able to bounce

@232 To be fair with Dillon he was hovering around the top 15 and on the
lead lap before having to pit on the last lap, for what I would assume
was a tire issue. Although it was great run for Reddick, hope he wins
ROY this season and was quite impressive today.

@229 - I agree with you, not a great race but a respectable one. After
being possibly the most boring track on the circuit for many years,
Fontana has aged into a decent track (which probably means some idiot
will decide to repave it). The drivers who can master the side draft and
the run on the bottom can make some moves now, they're not trapped a
second apart by aero-push.

The problem is people... they WILL repave it eventually. You can't keep
the same surface for forever. Daytona got mileage out of its surface
before a repave. Toke Kansas about 2 years before becoming a
multi-groove track. They repave MIS about ever 15 years because of
Michigan winters.

Homestead and Atlanta will be repaved soon. Now TMS didn't need a
repave, it was fine the way it was but ya know... no stone left unturned.

Tough luck for Ryan Blaney once again. He's three woulda coulda
shoulda's from having the best start in NASCAR history with three wins

mean, I can't stand 3- 4- and 5-wide racing with guys getting runs on
each other and sliding around in the corners and crossing each other

Whether or not you like stage racing, looking at the top 10 of each
stage gives a good indication of who is consistently running well
throughout each race.

We've had 6 stages so far (not counting the end of each race). 3 drivers
have finished among the top 10 in each stage so far:

Ryan Blaney (worst stage finish: 8th)
Chase Elliott (worst stage finish: 9th)
Jimmie Johnson (worst stage finish: 9th)

2 more drivers have finished among the top 10 in each stage except one:
Alex Bowman
Joey Logano

Great race for California. The 3-4-5 wide on the restarts were fun. It's
just tough when there are long green runs with this package, because the

I thought FOX's coverage was really solid today. Gordon seemed really
comfortable, and they've figured out how to smoothy mix in Larry Mac and
Jamie Mac at key points. Larry Mac is particularly excellent in his
role. I was a concerned after the first two races, but today makes me
think FOX is going to be pretty solid.

best car could get to the front and pull away like, well, the best car
should be able to.

I hate post race coverage of the winner now. I miss watching the driver
get out of his car and celebrate in victory lane then interview. Why
does it have to be the stupid start/finish line interview then 30 second
head set interview with the announcers? Some traditions are worth keeping.

All in all solid and fun race and decent coverage.

Had such a fun time at this race. The sunrise service was something that
really doesn't get much attention but I thought was really heartwarming
hearing the stories of Faith from Ty Dillon, McDowell, Almirola, and
Lajoie. Lots of fun stuff all throughout the track including the funny
little "Drags vs Checkered Flags" debate between NHRA champion Robert
Hight and Joey Logano over which sport was better. The pits were AMAZING
seeing all the tires and the preparations made by all the teams before
the race. There was so much cool stuff I forgot that there was still a
race to watch! The racing in my opinion was very well and closely
contended until Bowman proved he was the car to be reckoned with in the
end, and a great atmosphere of fans. Jimmie Johnson was a clear fan
favorite as he got by far the best cheers out of anyone. So glad I went
back and can't wait for next year should there be the opportunity!

275. That is going to be interesting. NASCAR is really moving away from
tradition. How far they can take it is anyones guess. The OLD fans are
gone, the middle ones like myself (Fan since the late 80s), are some
what give and take, but the new ones they are targetting for sure.

driver who won the most (11 of 28 races) of the season hadn't scored a

repeats of a Top 10 as there were 20 total different drivers who scored
a Top 10 of the 20 positions available, thanks to a mixture of a road
course and a superspeedway to start out the season.

impressive.

@293 - Wow, that might been more amazing. I'm not sure how I missed that
when I noticed the top 10s. I doubt we've ever had a season with no
repeat drivers in the top 5 through the first 3 races.

#295 It is not uncommon to see 20+ drivers with a Top 10 in the first
three races. There were a bunch more seasons of 20 to 22, plus the 23
I've listed before. 2020 seems to be the second highest from what I can
find with its 24 however.

#293/295 1971 had 15 different drivers for 15 positions, though the
Daytona Qualifier races counted for points for races #2 & #3 and the
Daytona 500 at race #4 had repeats.

#296 I've stopped at 1973 for the Top 10 because it was taking too much
time and effort to go through race to race to race for every seasons and
memorizing them all. So I didn't check 1974 through 1998.

Top 5 was so much quicker and simpler; 1971 and 2020 are the only
seasons with 15 different drivers of the possible 15 Top 10 positions
scoring Top 5.

following drivers had a top 10 finish after first three races of the
