On top of all that, this race marks the return of Ryan Newman after a heart stoping crash in the Daytona 500. This is also Matt Kenseth's first race in about a year and a half. With no practice/qualifying, his first lap in a cup car in a year and a half will be lap 1 in the race. 14. Potentially a small team could use the same car for all four of those races if they made sure to keep it in one piece and pick up four cup paydays. I think that's a big reason TBR is back(along with RWR buying Premium and Tommy having nothing better to do) and B.J. McLeod deciding to make the jump to cup with the #78 and help from RWR. 20. How will the racing be? Will guys go crazy at the start because antsy? Will there be a lot of mechanical issues? A million questions. I get the reason for no practice, but if ever a race needed practice, it would be this one. I also wonder if teams have backup drivers in case a driver, God forbids, catches COVID-19. During the COVID-19 shutdown many drivers took part in iRacing events including Kyle Larson but Larson lost his ride after he referred to Bubba Wallace using a racial epitaph during a non-NASCAR virtual race he was livesteaming. It was meant as a joke but the fallout was massive with the #42 sponsors withdrawing support if Larson stayed Ganassi was forced to remove him from the seat afterward while NASCAR suspended him. Larson has since completed sensitivity training but only time will tell if we'll see him return to NASCAR one day. With the #42 open Ganassi drafted in Kenseth with the 2003 champion now going from almost retired to back behind the wheel of a competitive car. Both Newman and Kenneth received waivers from NASCAR so they will be eligible to fight for the championship despite the fact they missed races. 46. It won't be the first sporting event since major shutdowns began as the UFC hosted its UFC 249 pay-per-view in Jacksonville Florida a week before this race. It's also the oldest NASCAR track that's 1 mile or longer, with the next longest track being Daytona. This track was built off of being the largest track of its kind, and the history of it being a tough track to race at has been the story since 1950, with its uniquely shaped track, and the surface that has been wearing much more quickly than most other tracks make engineers scratch their heads when they arrive. 53. That was a full-on Civil War reference in its era, complete with the winner driving into victory lane to celebrate with an actor dressed as a Confederate soldier riding on the hood holding up a big Stars and Bars Confederate battle flag. I think I remember watching a show where they were showing old clips of that celebration complete with the NASCAR guys watching noting that was "cool at the time but would be a sign everyone would be about to lose a lot of money today." All that said said it would be cool if they could give the race a cool name like the "Lady in Black 400" or the "American 400" instead. 60. Darlington's popularity has been on the upswing in recent years, thanks to the throwback race, but this is huge for the small town. Ironically, this sin't a throwback race, but due to the simple race name, and many races in such short time, it almost does feel like a trip back in time. We could either see a chaotic wreckfest, like 2015, or a more simple, civilized (If you could even use that term here) race, like 2018. Either way this may even surpass the Daytona 500 in hype. Can't wait. Also, my favorite underfunded team, Tommy Baldwin Racing makes it's return. Could this race get even better?! 67. Yeet posted: 05.12.2020 - 4:33 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @64 probably not, since starting up front means very little in a Cup race (I mean little in terms of getting an edge in a 400-500 mile race). It wouldn't really be beneficial to purposefully throw away points to start up front as well. Cars start from the back all the time and work their way up in around 60 laps, so I don't think starting up front would really make that much of a difference as the race progresses. There will probably be a fight for 20th by the smaller teams to hopefully start up front to be in front of their competition that runs similar speeds however. 68. And yes there is a bit of an advantage to pitting towards the front, but not enough to completely win a race just off pit selection, at the very least at Darlington lol 74. possum posted: 05.12.2020 - 6:46 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @65 - odds are we will, and someone who isn't slowing down will run over someone who is, and there'll be hurt feelings all round. This is NASCAR, after all. This is kind of a consequence of there being too few people with racing experience in NASCAR's top ranks. Most short tracks don't announce the number of cars they'll invert until it's too late for any games-playing. NASCAR should have done it the same way - announced there'd be an inversion up front, but not how many cars until after the race. 75. Would you really give up 4 points in order to start 1st instead of 5th? What I think we will see, though, is a big fight for 20th, because finishing 20th gives you the pole in the next race while finishing 21st means you start dead last. That is a big difference, especially considering the second race is shorter. Overall, I like the format. It will create more excitement than just lining everyone up by owner points, while still being relatively fair and not completely random. Some of the reasons mentioned why they quit watching or following NASCAR was because NASCAR priced themselves out, the death of Dale Earnhardt, the retirements of J. Gordon, T. Stewart, and Dale Jr., and too many gimmicks with rules changes and too many tweaks to the points standings. A couple actually said they didn't like how NASCAR gave an exemption to Kyle Busch in 2015. A driver that only raced 2/3 of the year. They asked me what to look for that might be different from when they followed then and I told them about how the races were broke up in stages now and you got points for finishing in the top-10 of each state along with a playoff point for the winner. And I swear you wouldn't believe all the wtf looks I got when I said that and then explained it. Some liked that there was a more emphasis on winning, while some still like the old Winston Cup points standings. Ditto for the lucky dog/free pass rule. About everyone liked the wave around and not racing back to the line. NASCAR has a great opportunity here to gain fans back and attract new fans for the fact that there's going to be live competition at the highest level. I hope the drivers nail it Sunday. It's unfortunate for the stages, though, I feel like NASCAR really shot itself in the foot with that. Haven't seen any news about the 16 & 49, but if we go off last year (where Haley had 3 starts & the 2nd MBM car had 1) then that would give us 25 attempts from these open teams in the remaining 32 races. Not a very high likelihood that 3 of them would enter the same race there. But I suppose it's possible. Here are the DNQs since the charter system began: 2016: 12 DNQs (8 not at Daytona) 2017: 4 DNQs (2 not at Daytona) 2018: 4 DNQs (4 not at Daytona) 2019: 2 DNQs (0 not at Daytona) 2020: 3 DNQs so far (all at Daytona) There hasn't been a DNQ at a race other than the Daytona 500 since Timmy Hill failed to qualify Carl Long's #66 at the fall Texas race in 2018. I think the most likely places we could see a DNQ would be Indianapolis, either Texas race, the Coca-Cola 600 or the Bristol night race (because those races pay the most, based on 2015 data.) 123. When the Talladega/DieHard 500 used to be raced in July drivers could lose anywhere between 10-20 pounds during the race because of the extreme heat. That's when they didn't have an air hose as well. Homestead shouldn't have to worry about any possible hurricanes at that point. I'm kind of surprised that NASCAR didn't make Martinsville a 400 lap race during the week. It can be a very long race starting that late in the day, but then again fans won't be there to have to worry about getting home. The teams will head south to Miami after that. 169. It's going to have a different feel to it for the drivers after coming off 500 miles Sunday at Atlanta and then 500 laps at Martinsville on a Wednesday, and then going to Miami for 400 miles that Sunday. 500 miles at Atlanta isn't exactly easy. Stinks for Johnson that he crashed out of the lead, that would definitely go in one of nascar nixon's D*** Lapped Car specials. My three picks for Mile501's challenge results: Johnson- crashed OUT in crash on lap 90 from the lead 21- Fringe top 10 contender all day, still came away with a top 15 finish even though the car went away on longer runs Reddick- 8th place finish. Fog win obviously gets counted out, and while I don't remember the Martinsville race in question it looks like David Ragan didn't make it to the top ten on speed there (22 laps in the top 15 and an average running position of 27th...though how he managed to dig out of that hole is probably impressive in and of itself). In what is more or less actual "modern" NASCAR, if 2001 couldn't top that then I'm not sure any other season since then would have. Interesting find! More on John Hunter Nemechek: with the loop data box score now in place, you can get an even better sense on how great this race was for an FRM car. JHN's average running position of 18th was equaled or bested by FRM drivers just 8 times last season - across 3 full time cars (McDowell 4x, Ragan 3x, Tifft 1x). Narrowing it down even further, of those 8 runs three were from plate races and two more were from road courses. In short: FRM cars aren't supposed to run well and finish well at intermediates, and rookies aren't supposed to do well at Darlington. Yet here we are - atta boy, John Hunter! I watched like the last 90 laps of the race. What happened to Jimmie Johnson? It looked like he just lost control of his car and spun out upon trying to lap a car(the #17.) I do believe Clint Bowyer lost spots at the end of the race because of a big piece of vinyl that got stuck to the front grille of his car. It changed the handling of his car. Kyle Busch lost a lap and had to pit with 30 laps to go because of a vibration problem with the car. He was running 9th at the time that he pitted. I believe he could have finished in 6th or 7th place if he didn't have to pit with 30 laps to go. Drivers go back to Darlington on Wednesday. Isn't this the first time that the drivers had to race these distances in a 4 day time span since the days of Richard Petty? I don't think drivers have raced these distances(say 400 miles) in a 4 day time span since maybe the late 1960s/early 1970's. I'm only 40 years old so I'm not too sure. 497. Jimmie Johnson drove in too aggressively for no reason trying to get by the lapped car of Buescher and made contact which sent him into the inside wall. That was a Johnson mistake. Kyle Busch was 7th before he had to pit. They've mentioned that NASCAR hadn't raced at the same track more than once during the same week other than the twin qualifying races at Daytona prior to the Daytona 500, as points paying races. The qualifying races used to be points paying races until they weren't years ago. 498. It really is quite impressive and stands out that Matt Kenseth isn't affected by age or absence all that much! He races as he's been around all this time despite not racing in Cup all of 2019. Also to note about his three straight Top 10, he's had three different crew chiefs during that span as well, even though he raced the #6 Jack Roush car in the two season finale races of 2018 at Phoenix and Homestead, he had different crew chiefs for both races. This really does speak volume about Kenseth's ability. 499. Conor posted: 05.17.2020 - 11:00 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Why is Kenseth listed as getting no points? Congrats to Harvick on his 50th win. From 2001-2013 when he raced for RCR he won a total of 23 races, and since making a very "late in the game" move that has enhanced his legacy greatly he has won 27 races since 2014 for SHR. If you told me when he joined SHR at 38 years old that he would get 50 wins before his career was over you would have got another wtf look. Really if not for a lot of bad pit stops by his crew since he was with SHR he would probably have anywhere between 60-65 wins. Congrats to Harv and for being classy after the race as well speaking out about missing the fans and his doctor during this pandemic. 505. Each of them have shown they have the speed, they just needed some patience and for some things to go their way. It almost didn't go Reddick's way when he had part of the Blue Emu banner stuck on his car, but he was in the thick of the top-10 for most of the day. With all things considered, I think this race turned out quite well. No doubt you could see the teams that had the right set of notes and setups and which teams struggled. Even though Keselowski & Harvick led the majority of the race, it looked like it could've been a very interesting one. Jimmie Johnson (never been a fan of his, but I'd like to see him return to victory lane before it's over) and William Byron looked good, but both had issues and they finished poorly. Chase spent a lot of time in the top 5 or close to it, Bowman ran 2nd seemingly all race, and Kurt Busch looked strong, but Harvick wins by over 2 seconds. Someone has probably already said this but it looks like Chevy is back. All 4 Hendrick cars were strong today, 3 of them led laps and the 2 Ganassi cars finished 3rd & 10th, with the 10th place finisher being a 48 year old who hasn't raced in nascar since November 18, 2018 521. On Instagram I have a friend who lives in the Netherlands, he's really only been introduced to F1 over there (as pretty much all of Europe has) and they played NASCAR for the first time over there yesterday. My friend was hooked instantly and he wanted his neighbor to watch as well, and he said the sport was beautiful and NASCAR needs more credit than what they get". My friend also said some media outlet announced that around 1.7 million people in the Netherlands tuned in. I'm no TV guy so I don't know if these #s contribute to the amount that Stern and Pockrass gave out. But how cool! 527.
