The Top 20 finishing positions are inverted (meaning Kevin Harvick won the race while Ryan Preece finished 20th the previous race), while positions 21st through 39th remain as is. Because of its surprise addition to the schedule Darlington will now become the first track to host three races in the same year since Riverside in 1981 and the first to host consecutive races since Daytona hosted three in a row back in 1971 when the short Daytona 500 qualifying races still counted for points. 21. thog posted: 05.18.2020 - 1:43 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @15 - Yep, thanks for clearing that up for me! haha 22. The race will be harder for Harvick (And others who were good) They would be watching Harvick's race, They would be making adjustments, so it's not easy for the closer. Both the 88 and the 4 will start in row 10, but I think that Bowman (And all of Hendrick) will be the dominating cars. How will pit stalls work in this race? 23. TheDewCrew posted: 05.18.2020 - 2:00 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) This race will be Ryan Preece's first time even starting in the top dozen of a race. His previous best was the ROVAL race last year, with 14th 24. Mile501 posted: 05.18.2020 - 2:24 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Obviously there are unique circumstances in play; still, the record books will show that this is the best career start for... Ryan Preece (1st; previous best 14th) Ty Dillon (2nd; previous best 9th) John Hunter Nemechek (12th; previous best 23rd) Tyler Reddick (14th; previous best 19th) Ryan Newman will start 6th; he has only started better than that once in the last 3 years. (He may still be known as "Rocketman" and he does rank 9th in all-time Cup poles, but it's been 7 years since he last won a pole.) Matt DiBenedetto drew 3rd for Sunday's race, his best career start, and he'll start 7th in this race, tying his previous best career start. So both of his two career best starts (though one is a tie) are coming in this duo of races at Darlington with unusual ways of setting the field. 25. (He goes into detail on his twitter page and even uses a diecast car to better explain these changes. Basically underneath the car on the frame rails there are 4 reference points that form 4 corners of an invisible rectangle. Teams submit the location of these reference points as long as it fits NASCAR's invisible rectangle within reason. The change will be essentially removing the within reason part, so teams will no longer be allowed to massage the angles of the corners of this invisible rectangle. It will be a set location and there will be no changing it.) 37. RyanM posted: 05.19.2020 - 4:39 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) 2008 New Hampshire also comes to mind with Patrick Carpentier on the pole and long past his prime Bobby Labonte on the outside. That was because it rained in the middle of qualifying so every car that went out after the rain had a massive track condition advantage. 38. Onion posted: 05.19.2020 - 10:04 am Rate this comment: (2) (1) Holy hell what is with the massive defense of Preece here? After an extremely mediocre rookie season, he's shown little sign of improvement so far this year, which is even more glaring seeing how decent Stenhouse runs when he is pointing the car in the right direction. Sure he's a great modified driver, but how is that relevant again? So was Jeff Fuller, but that didn't matter much with the extremely different Cup cars. @9 and 12 Yes Preece's had 5 crash DNFs... but he hasn't even made it to 50 starts yet. He accumulated it over the past 41 races (2019-2020), where only Stenhouse, Ragan and Larson had more. THAT is how he "suddenly" became one of the more crash-prone drivers. By actually being one. And finally, he may have had only one crash this year, but it was his doing and happened to be the big one from Daytona. So he surely does not get the it was a plate race excuse, seeing how he was the cause. 39. He is currently one pole away from tying. 44. JSPorts posted: 05.19.2020 - 5:09 pm Rate this comment: (0) (2) That's such a bad statistic. Obviously Busch is a talented driver, but he should be viewed for his Cup results, not those in the lower series after he became a Cup driver. This kind of "beating up on the little guys" pretty much isn't done in any other motorsport or any other sport for that matter, so those stats shouldn't be included with his Cup stats. Same goes for Kevin Harvick, Carl Edwards, Denny Hamlin and any other driver who does this or has done it. 45. JSPorts posted: 05.19.2020 - 5:18 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) Prior to this race, Ryan Preece's best start was 14th at the Roval last fall, and Ty Dillon's best start was 9th at Texas last spring. They had 1 combined top-10 start, and now they have 2 top-5 starts by virtue of the top-20 invert. The way Preece ran on Sunday, we could see him contending for a top 10 in this race, too. 46. Note I didn't say anything about exclusively to Cup, which is what you brought up, Richard Petty will most likely never be touched in that regard. It seems you finally wiped your tears and decided to come out of hiding. We had a moment to witness Kyle win his 200th national series NASCAR race at the 2019 Fontana race. While poles are meaningless it's still a fun stats. 47. If we have to have two races Thursday thats fine with me except gotta take humira and when would I like to do it well not when they're racing. Also by the way it the first time since 1985 at Daytona when Greg Sacks scored his first and only win in a major upset at Daytona in the Firecracker 400. One thing is for certain this year we will see the first points paying wednesday and Thursday NASCAR Cup Races since the mid-80's when they did at Daytona only until 1988. Works for me what you think especially if you don't like rain delays and you want NASCAR to get momentum, infact most watching sporting event on Sunday in fact slightly more viewers on Sunday even then the last two rounds of the Last Dance. 48. After 43 full-distance races in a row, Darlington once again had a race called early. I figured they'd at least wait till Labor Day to throw it back to all the rain-shortened Darlington races from the 90s, come on now! There have been two postponed races during that time, the 2003 Busch spring race (with an ending that did its best to live up to the previous day's Busch-Craven duel) and the 2007 Cup race. After a caution late in stage 3, Denny Hamlin stays out on a strategy gamble and assumes the lead while the remainder of the leaders pit. Kyle Busch seriously miscalculates distance while trying to jump in front of Kevin Harvick and clips Chase Elliott in the right rear quarter panel, turning him hard into the inside wall. Social media absolutely explodes into chaos, and Kyle Busch briefly becomes the number one trending subject on Twitter in the United States. As the cars circle under caution, Chase gives Kyle the single finger salute on broadcast television. The potential threat of rain had been lingering the entire race, and suddenly the sky busts open into a heavy downpour. A fox runs on to the track, so a fox is on NASCAR on FOX. The cars are brought onto pit road and Chase's team members wait across from Kyle's car, breaking numerous social distancing protocols. Denny is declared the winner and immediately puts on a face mask designed to resemble his own face. Kyle and his former crew chief Alan Gustafson get into a heated argument, and FOX cuts the audio after expletives were uttered. Denny proceeds to gingerly walk down pit road to victory lane by himself while brandishing an umbrella. All of this occurs over period of approximately 15 minutes. Mike Joy and Jeff Gordon are almost entirely lost for words in the post-race show after all the insanity that had just transpired. What a crazy introduction to midweek racing... 391. Last thing NASCAR needs is more gimmickry. Just line the lead lap cars up on the outside and the lap down cars on the inside and drop the green flag. It's simple, it worked for decades, and there's no reason not to do it that way. Anyway, as far as the race went, I thought it was not quite as good as Sunday's race. With cooler temps it seemed like the cars had better traction, and that was giving a bit of advantage to the leading car over one trying to pass. I'd say NASCAR should avoid night races at Darlington and stick with daytime if they want the best show. 421. People wanted this double file restart back in 2009, and they're still complaining about it today. The whole "choosing which lane you want to be in" for odd number positions is pretty gimmicky, and stupid idea in my opinion. NASCAR can't even determine who is to restart where at times, this will just make it more chaotic and worse, which will add more caution laps because everyone is in disagreement. Not to mention pit road will become hell because everyone is stopping trying to let others go to give up a position to have a "choice." 422. I hate planned cautions. 17 laps were ran under caution during these caution periods. So yea, the race could have been completed without them. Besides that, if a caution (actually two of them) came out before the competition yellow (like last night) then there shouldn't have been a competition yellow. 424. By the time you got to the 4th or 5th driver in line, you'd find someone who wanted to gain the advantage of starting on the front row. @420 - I also prefer the old way of putting lapped cars on the inside, but I doubt NASCAR would ever return to that format. @421 - You misunderstood something. All drivers, in order, would get to choose their lane as they get lined up to take the restart. It would actually put an end to the pit road chaos that we sometimes see now on tracks where one lane is much better than the other. Anyone who thinks it's complicated or gimmicky may not quite understand the concept. It's simpler than you think. When given 1 to go, the leader picks inside or outside. Then the 2nd place driver picks inside or outside. And so on through the field. It gives drivers more choices. I don't see a downside. 426. Sector posted: 05.21.2020 - 7:26 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) #421 How can the second place driver get a choice to choose the outside lane if the leader takes the outside lane anyway? That isn't a choice they will have and they'll be on the inside regardless. Thus, the second place driver will have to slow down to let the driver behind them pass so they can get into third, but the third place driver will not want second to restart on the inside to get stuck down there. I don't see how that's misunderstood. 427. So many times in the past when that was the rule they would get in the way of the leaders. The lapped cars weren't allowed the be on the inside line inside 10 laps to go in the race. If they did go back to that, I would like to see the rule be changed to 25 laps. They could have all the lead lap cars single file, and then the lapped cars behind them double file so the cars wouldn't be wrapped around the whole track at short tracks. 429. 1995-Subaru-WRX-Sti posted: 05.21.2020 - 7:57 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) How about this (unpopular opinion); keep double file restarts, flagman restarts the race (no stupid restart zone). I think a lot of it has to do with these guys having a lack of seat time due to the CV-19. They had winter break and then came back to race four races and then was out for two more months. Then, they come back to race two races at NASCAR's most difficult track without qualifying or practice. The Lady in Black takes no prisoners and doesn't owe anyone anything. JHN raced his rear end off to get a top 10 Sunday and then crashed and finished 35th last night. I thought the racing was pretty good considering everything right now, however, there hardly was ever a long green flag run to see who had the better handling car over the duration of the race. Darlington was built for cars to to run 120-130 mph, now they run 170-180 and it's very difficult to pass in an early green flag run. Whoever won the last restart between Harvick and Bowman other night was going to win the race. It's why I dislike stages, as soon as the drivers and the race gets in a good groove it get comes to a halt because of the stage cautions. 433. And thus the cars in the less good lane are put at an unfair advantage. Take Darlington as an example, where the outside is much better. Suspose you're in third place, so you start second row on the inside. The outside is better, so you know the guy in fourth will pass you the moment the green comes out. How is it fair that the guy in fourth should have an advantage over the guy in third? Worse yet, at a track like Darlington the outside is so much better the guys in 6th and 8th are going to pass the 3rd place guy on the start. How is it fair that the guy in 3rd should lose 3 spots just because he's forced to start on the inside? That's why you get guys like Dillon calling for changes (in this case, the chose cone) - so that the cars can line up in a way which doesn't unfairly put some guys at disadvantage to guys who should be behind them. It's also why you get guys playing silly games on pit road to try and get a favorable lineup. But there's a very simple solution. Just line the cars up in one line, and then no-one is at a disadvantage to cars who should be behind them, because they _are_ behind them. Simple and fair is always better than complicated and fair, and both are better than complicated and unfair, which is the situation we have now. 448. 1995-Subaru-WRX-Sti posted: 05.22.2020 - 8:19 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "Watched it. The commerical had been reaired as part of a few GEICO campaigns that called back to its past adverts in recent years though, including earlier in 2020, so the scheme was a clever reference for a Wednesday race.
