Last year, we had an amazing race with 30 lead changes and tons of passing throughout the pack. Will we have this type of racing this year? I hope so. Got a full 40 car field. 2. TeamDCRfan posted: 05.22.2020 - 11:00 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Looks like JJ Yeley is reuniting with Tommy Baldwin this weekend. No practice, but there is going to be a qualifying session before the race. 3. Jimmie4life posted: 05.22.2020 - 11:16 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I wonder if having Qualifying would entice more teams to show up for races knowing they'll have a shot at making the field instead of a random draw. Maybe, and because of how close the speedway is to many of the teams home bases, we might(this is just a hope, not real) see 41 or 42 cars show up. 4. JSPorts posted: 05.22.2020 - 11:18 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Glad to see J.J. back with TBR. He put together a pretty nice full-season effort for them in 2013, most notably his top-10 finish at the Daytona 500 in the Golden Corral #36 car. I hope TBR & J.J. can run some more races together this year. It would be cool to see this team back full-time at some point in the near future, and good runs this year could go a long way in helping that happen. 5. Jimmie4life posted: 05.22.2020 - 11:24 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) I always remembered watching the Golden Corral car, and always when the car crashed, people'd say "Top 10 kids eat free no!!". Man, that was always fun to look at. Glad Tommy Baldwin got the team back together, and hope he can keep working hard and get back to competition. 6. I think they'll do that, and it'd show a great amount of gratitude, and it's nice to have that quiet moment in the middle of a 400 lap race that'll go on for 4.5 hours. 7. JSPorts posted: 05.22.2020 - 11:42 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) I'd like to see that, too. This is because Chastain is entered in a 3rd Ganassi car using the 77 number/charter. 10. Yeet posted: 05.22.2020 - 2:06 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Of the announced races so far, this will be the only race to feature a qualifying session. It will be single car. @3 I don't want to be a Debbie Downer but it might be too short notice for some teams right now. Most are finally gaining traction which is good to see but I think it would be a massive setback for a team to DNQ a race right now. Not saying it's impossible, because I'd absolutely love to see 41-42 show up, but if it's gonna happen, it's gonna happen later on down the road I believe. 11. Of the traditional races for motorsports' most famous day it is the only one going ahead as scheduled in 2020 as the novel coronavirus pandemic means the Indianapolis 500 has been postponed to September and the Monaco Grand Prix is cancelled. 15. Back in the old days, this was one of those races that guys up front early you knew would fade and guys back a little farther were great when the sun went down. Cars nowdays that are more aero and not as much mechanical obviously don't have as much fall off, but it was really fun in those days. Still, i like to get pizza, junk food, and beer for this race. 18. The Deuce will again have a patriotic red, white, and blue paint scheme for NASCAR's longest race to mark its one outing for Miller this year. MillerCoors, Miller Lite' parent company, has been restructuring in recent years and reducting amid decreasing revenue in recent years and its NASCAR sponsorship has been dialed back during that process. 22. Rusty ran it towards the end of the year for 7 races. Actually on second thought that would be better for next year because it will be 50 years of Miller in racing. I guess if they were to do anything maybe go a bit obscure and run the car Dave Marcis ran in sparingly in ?72 and ?73. The Blue, White, and Red #2 AMC Matador. 24. Get the car at an angle to the direction it should be moving, and the downforce progressively goes away. So a high-downforce car is easy to drive, until something starts to go wrong, and then it's very hard to drive. Credit to Almirola for doing about the best a driver could. (incidently, ground-effects cars are the worst for that. The transition from full downforce to absolutely none happens almost instantly) 54. The car's setup depends on having a particular weight on each wheel. The car is intentionally built light, and ballast is added to get the right amount of weight on each corner (almost always that means adding ballast to the left side and/or the rear). So if Denny's car is missing weight (and it wasn't designed to lose it, like sometimes happened in the old days) it'll handle terrible. It puts them in an interesting situation - if they know what was lost, they can just replace it. But if they don't, they'll have to guess what's missing. If they get it wrong, they can adjust with the wedge bolts, but that'll probably take several tries, and won't be optimum. Beyond that, they were probably pretty close to the weight limit when the started. Add too little, and they'll be underweight in post race inspection. Add too much and they might be over the left-side limit. It would almost have made sense for them to go behind the wall and scale the car to get it right. 99. I'm sure he'll do it and be a team player, but it can't be much fun. With that said, there are still a couple of things he's racing for: - When the playoffs begin, bonus points are awarded to everyone who ranks among the top 10. Running all night and picking up perhaps 8 or 10 points could make a difference when those bonus playoff points are awarded. - The higher he finishes, the better starting spot he'll have on Wednesday. If there is really high attrition and he manages to make it up to 20th, it would certainly be worth the effort. Unfortunately for Denny, races at Charlotte rarely have that kind of attrition. Still, the driver who finished 9 laps down in the attrition-filled spring 2018 race at Texas was 18th, so anything is possible. 153. Johnson and Reddick ran top 10 all day and ended out the day within the top 10 in the finishing order and both ran in the top 4 coming to the white flag. 21 was steadily improving all race coming from almost 2 laps down to lead at the start of stage 3, was running at the outside of the top 10 closing down on Reddick for 10th when the caution came out, unfortunately decided to stay out and got swallowed up by absolutely EVERYONE. This race wasn't that much different, especially with the last caution falling into his lap. Regardless, Alex Bowman ended up finishing the last car on the lead lap. Must have gotten shuffled hardcore in the end. Kevin Harvick continues his Top 10 streak to 7 to start the season, the only driver to score Top 10 in every races of 2020 so far. Kyle Busch, despite not being super strong all race and making late race charges, has tied Kevin with the most Top 5 of 2020 (4). It's likely not Logano as he has 2 wins this year and has been on fire. Probably not Blaney either as he is a perennial playoff contender and always finds a way to sneak in at least 1 race win per season. Could be Keselowski because he is in a contract year, but after tonight if he doesn't go to the #2 again next season then HMS will probably pick him up for the #48. That leaves Matty D as the odd one out. Remember Daniel Suarez last season? Came a couple of points short of making the playoffs and had a great run at the playoff race at Texas, yet SHR released him out of contract in favor of COLE CUSTER who is absolutely setting the world on fire with off the lead lap finishes. Right now, Matty D is in the top 10 in points and is looking like a Chase surprise favorite through 7 races. However, if Team Penske thinks that they need a spot for Austin, even if Matty D pulls his way into the playoffs or even advances through some playoff rounds, if they don't kick out Keselowski, then it'll be him to go. If it's him and not Keselowski then HMS will probably bring up Noah Gragson for the #48 and then us Matty D fanboys will be waiting to see if there are any other big name retirees or if he'll get forced down the ladder a bit just like Suarez. Of course all of these scenarios could be avoided if Penske just created a fourth car for Austin and kept the WBR alliance... Of course no one who just won a race should have to worry about stuff like the above. What has Austin SpinWreck done in XFinity this year to deserve the #2 or even the #21??? He hasn't won at all besides 2 ROAD COURSE RACES LAST YEAR and that's all he appears to be win-capable at. The guys in XFinity that deserve full time cup rides after their performances this year so far look like Chase Briscoe and Ryan Sieg and maybe Chastain. No Gragson, no Riley Herbst and no SpinWreck. You can't keep a guy who's that young and that talented down for much longer, and as I've experienced with some teams in other sports I follow recently, the heartbreak only makes the eventual triumph that much more satisfying. But I still don't think Gustafson is the guy (whereas I think Cliff Daniels is really, really good, and Hendrick would be smart to pair him with his best driver starting next year). Some other takeaways: - Alex Bowman. Every time I feel like he's reached his ceiling, he just finds a new level. He's gone from an invisible 15th place driver his first full season in the 88 to a streaky guy who could dominate a race but just as often be a total nonfactor last year, to now a perennial threat every week. Yeah, Hendrick's equipment being back on the upswing has helped, but I honestly think it's more confidence driven than anything. After Kyle Larson's, ahem, incident, I think it's safe to say I've found my new #2 driver. - Not a fan of Keselowski, but if that was the last time Miller Lite will ever appear on a car, it's cool that they get to go out on top. - Truex has been the best Gibbs car in almost every race this year and could easily have multiple wins. So much for him sucking without Pearn. - Jimmie Johnson is going to win a race this year. I'll put my money on Texas, the one track where he's still been consistently good the last few years. And one last thing, since I've been posting here a bit more often lately I guess I should probably spill a little secret: I used to be a highly frequent and often controversial poster under a different name (won't say anything more than that but you can probably make a good guess if you were around back then based on what drivers I like). I was young and immature then and after the big split a few years ago I basically stopped posting here altogether because I was in other racing communities where I found the overall quality to be higher. But I still use this site all the time for various stats projects and lately I've been finding some good discussion (particularly on the driver pages) so I'll chip in from time to time. 445. With clean air meaning so much and tires meaning so little, if he doesn't screw up the restart, and can make it back to the white flag, he has the race won 452. Alex Bowman absolutely dominated a large portion of the race, with his 164 laps led being 77 more than anybody else. However, Alex lost a considerable amount of positions on the final restart and finished as the final lead lap vehicle. William Byron had respectable top-ten speed the entire time, and was running tenth when his left rear tire shredded. In addition to losing pole position by 9 thousandths of a second in the afternoon, Jimmie Johnson has his best finish since June 2017 eliminated by an Optical Scanning Station inspection failure (pending a potential appeal). Chase Elliott seemed destined to celebrate victory after leading with only two laps remaining in the race, until the caution flew and he made the perplexing choice to pit. Between tonight and the fiasco at Darlington on Wednesday, Chase is almost undoubtedly having some of the worst weeks of his life. 460.
