Martinsville has hosted night races before, such as the first-ever Whelen Modified Tour/Whelen Southern Modified Tour combination race in September 2005, but that was always done using temporarily lights brought in just for those events. 8. Martinsville is also a good track for him as he almost won here in 2017 until Denny Hamlin dumped him. 2019 was also a good race for Chase at Martinsville. Denny Hamlin: There has been a recent trend where Kevin Harvick wins the previous race, Denny Hamlin would win the next one. Denny is good at Short Tracks, and has won here before in 2010 and 2015. Kyle Busch: Kyle comes in with the most top 4 finishes this year. Kyle did very well at our first short track at Bristol. He is very good at Martinsville in the past few races and I expect a strong showing out of him Martin Truex Jr: He won the most recent race here in dominating fashion. Both he and Kyle Busch are knocking on the door to get their first win this season. Brad Keselowski: Brad has done really well at Martinsville. He dominated last year's spring race. He also won the most recent short track. Jimmie Johnson: Jimmie has looked the fastest in over 3 years. He has won a lot of races at Martinsville, and hopefully I could see him win. 10. I don't understand why people see it as a gimmick. Just let drivers pick which line they want (inside or outside) as they cross the start/finish line with 1 to go before a restart. It's as simple as that. On the other hand, trying to force drivers to maintain pit road speed would be practically impossible. 32. Since when has NASCAR been averse to "gimmicks"? 2. Something must be done to allow the racing to decide the outcome of restarts, and not the luck of the draw (which lane) or pit road shenanigans. The guy who comes out second from the pits should not be at a major DISadvantage to the guy who comes out 6th. 35. If they do the cone, let's all get ready for an extra 5 laps of yellow while everyone tries to figure out where they're susposed to be lined up. There's a very simple solution to the problem. Lead lap cars line up on the outside, and lap-down cars line up on the inside. Worked fine for 50 years before the current crop of idiots showed up in NASCAR management, and it'd work fine now. It's a blatantly obvious solution to a massive problem, one that smart fans and drivers have been pointing out for years, but Nascar has seemed content to let the 6th place restarter have a massive advantage over the guy who starts in 3rd. That is absolute madness. It adds an interesting element of strategy, and makes the competition more fair. There's no downside. There's zero excuse that it's taken them this long to realize it. 41. Why allow someone to gain track position that they haven't earned either by good pit stops or outrunning people on track just because they want to have the lane no one else wants? Hypothetical example, say Ty Dillon is 15th and he's the first person that chooses the outside at Atlanta, BOOM he's in second place. Did he earn it? NO. He just chose a lane and ended up in second place when he should have been in 15th. Such a gimmick. 43. But which is more fair--the driver in 6th having an advantage over the driver in 3rd, solely because of how they happened to come off pit road? Or each driver having the freedom to make his own decision about which lane to pick? 45. Corey posted: 06.10.2020 - 10:36 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @42 You'll never see that happen. If the Top 3 all choose the inside, then 4th is more likely to take the outside. He'll restart second but with the advantage of the inside, he'll fall back to 4th. It could be better or worse depending on the restart, but there will be no significant change. I doubt you'll see more then three cars choose the same line in a row as starting further up in a bad line will be better then starting further back in the good one. 46. Lane choice is a strategy call, like many other strategy calls that can gain or lose you positions. I'd prefer that to seeing people lose positions on a double file restart because they happened to leave pit road in an even numbered position, and got the non-preferred lane by default. The gamesmanship exiting pit road needs to stop. Or, we could just go back to single-file restarts. Wouldn't that be the least "gimmicky" solution of all? 49. PettyFan43 posted: 06.10.2020 - 1:17 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) With tonight's 43 car having major historical significance even outside of the sport of NASCAR, it would be a shame to use it ever again and just rewrap it with typical corporate sponsorship for some future race. I think Petty should auction off the car and donate the proceeds to the victims of the riots. I think that gesture would be in the spirit of togetherness as shown on the car itself and would help in some small way to help the healing process. 50. I also read a tweet yesterday that said that Denny Hamlin and most drivers are pressuring Nascar for a cone rule. It will happen soon, and should have happened years ago. 42- I think you're misunderstanding. In no scenario would that ever happen. 51. I see your opinion and I respect it but I will note that NASCAR has never been a sport to avoid politics of the day on all ends of the spectrum including on the race cars themselves. Remember Reed Sorenson's "Trumpmobile" sponsorship on his car at Texas right before the election in 2016? Or Jon Wood winning truck races in the #50 Bob Graham for President Ford back in 2003 backed by the Floridian Democrat? Ronald Reagan's visited the Pepsi 400 in 1984 as part of his reelection campaign and George Wallace went to many NASCAR races during his political career. Jimmy Carter worked at Atlanta Motor Speedway and invited drivers to the White House; something most presidents since Richard Nixon has done in some capacity. Then-First Lady Michelle Obama and Jill Biden (current nominee Joe Biden's wife) weren't popular with much of the NASCAR crowd but she still came to Homestead in 2011 to promote initiatives for helping the families of American service members and thanked NASCAR fans for their support of that cause. We've even had a politician or two behind the wheel. ACT racer Phil Scott, who raced once in Busch North, is now the governor of Vermont. Richard Petty even moved into politics briefly after his racing career, losing the North Carolina Secretary of State election in 1996. 53. Point is, that the highest level of professional racing shouldn't need gimmicks to be interesting. @48 - the gamesmanship will move to teams. Just wait to hear the uproar here when Keselowski lines up first on the inside, and Logano moves up from 6th to line up first on the outside, and then Keselowski "spins the tires" on the git-go and lets Logano into the better lane. It kept his brakes and rotors cooler than what it normally would without the damage. This was convenient. I think Truex was helped by this as well, however, I still think he would have been a factor to win. If not for being dive bombed by Logano in 2018 he would have three out of the last four wins at Martinsville. btw, Whoever said Toyota isn't NASCAR's puppy is blind. Obviously you have to factor in equipment, so your Suarez/Johnson comparison is laughable. Otherwise, it's all about wins/laps led in Xfinity, rather than average finish/consistency. Kyle Busch didn't win the title like Brian Vickers in the Hendrick 5 in Busch, but won more and led more laps. Suarez "beat" (thanks, Cole Whitt) Erik Jones for the 2016 Xfinity title, but Jones won more and led more laps. 354. Most drivers learn early on that water on a metal seat gets very hot, and sitting in a pool of near-boiling water is not good. Even if he has a carbon seat, there's still a lot of heat conducted thru. @357 - yeah, that was odd. Before the race either Mike Joy or Regan Smith said Dillon had a relief driver standing by in case his wife went into labor. So very odd if that driver somehow went somewhere else. More likely the team just decided not to bother, given they were laps down, and just used that as an excuse. 359.
