If a driver DNQ's, it'll be the first ever race at a Superspeedway since the 40 car field change in 2016 to have less than 40 cars race. 6. Luckily, precipitation looks to not be a factor for the weekend and Monday. 7. Hamlin, Logano, Keselowski or Elliott have the biggest chance. If anyone outside the Top 16 can win it's either A. Dillon or Newman based on the recent past. 16. Anonymous posted: 06.16.2020 - 3:44 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @14 I think the odds are very good. Stenhouse and Buescher looked strong at Daytona, as did Newman before his crash. Can't count out the RCR cars either as strong as they've been lately. Personally, what I'd like would be for someone like Corey LaJoie to win and REALLY screw up the playoff, but that may be unrealistic. Still, I wouldn't be shocked to see an underdog winner here. 17. Although, they have generally done better at Daytona than Talladega in recent years. I also wouldn't count out Bubba Wallace or Ricky Stenhouse. Ty Dillon is someone else to watch. He has been remarkably consistent considering the nature of Talladega. In his 6 Cup starts there, he has finished between 10th and 17th, on the lead lap, every single time. His truck and Xfinity starts are similar, with just one crash DNF. We'll see if he can continue that streak, or even improve upon it, this weekend. 19. JSPorts posted: 06.16.2020 - 4:34 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) I still think it will be a battle of the bigger names up front this weekend. I'd say there's probably a 99% chance the winner is someone who already has a victory at Talladega - Keselowski, Logano, Bowyer, Johnson, Blaney, Stenhouse, Kenseth, Harvick, Hamlin, Elliott, Almirola or Kyle Busch. Also, NASCAR's new rules package is just going to create more crashes, unfortunately. 20. This is Spacer racing with enough horsepower to prevent single file racing, but unfortunately, makes racing more dangerous because decisions have to be made faster, which 1 mistake at the speeds they go cause more crashes. Lower speeds don't mean closer racing and bigger wrecks, it's all about the runs and driver errors, not speeds. 26. 1995-Subaru-WRX-Sti posted: 06.16.2020 - 5:37 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "Also, NASCAR's new rules package is just going to create more crashes, unfortunately" Don't you mean drivers? NASCAR guys race like they are driving tanks, hench why they race like donkeys. That fact that non of the idiots have spoken up (minus Ryan Newman, he shouldn't have to say a damn thing) says all I need to know. They haven't learned a f***ing thing. I am just speaking for the modern era ballot, I know Hershel McGriff will be in in the pioneer ballot more than likely unless someone else is a little bit of a bigger name too gets there too. But I do see Neil Bonett, and Ricky Rudd more than likely getting in for 2022, Carl Edwards I got a feeling might get what certain baseball guys or basketball or football guys have gotten it will take a long time for a certain someone to get in and has been on ballot many years, Ask Cris Carter that many many many years on it and didn't but then finally got it. NASCAD knows there will be wrecks, but are trying to limit dangerous wrecks. Going 205 is cool, but cars can become more dangerous the faster they travel, so slowing them down a bit make them more comfortable to put on a show. 30. danny posted: 06.16.2020 - 5:55 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I wonder how Davison gonna do at Talladega yeah we have seen indycar-sports car guys race and make NASCAR debut at certain tracks, but other then Jaques Villeneuve who can say I made my Cup Debut at TALLADEGA? I think after that is the underdogs who need attrition to have a good day, or rain like Justin Haley. 32. 1995-Subaru-WRX-Sti posted: 06.16.2020 - 6:05 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) @27 Not disagreeing but NASCAR doesn't control how they race. The elimination of Aero Ducts will prevent cars from having long term tandems, so expect to see limited pushes, probably a straightaway at the most. 51. Iamthedebris posted: 06.18.2020 - 3:01 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Here I go to get this off my chest, for the time being: NASCAR is not only not a joke of the sport, it was never dead or ever died at any moment ever, and the sport has hit the ditch already, and is on the rise again. Fans can debate whether or not the sport can succeed and return to fame of when it once was, or how the sport is ruined by terrible management and deserves to be mocked, or how the sport is a great example of movement throughout the world, and should be set as an example of leadership to look at. Whichever way you perceive this sports legacy currently now or how it will be in the future, we can all say for certain: NASCAR never died, it lived through Brian France's attempt at a rebuild that ultimately almost resulted in the sports demise, but we now have reached a point of change: The France family now has less control over the sport, and management has shifted from a family owned business that passes on each generation, it's a business run by the people from the sport, who love and care to see the succession of the sport, even if it doesn't make a profit. People who attempt to downplay the sport as a dying sport with overly optimistic fans who use any excuse to keep watching a sport lose its grip in the world every day don't attempt to look at the numbers and see how the sport has returned to an era of progression. The average attendance rate of a NASCAR race is similar in the amount of attendees for an Major League Baseball game or a National Football League game, with ridership ratings in the millions weekly, around 2-5 million for Cup series races, which is more than the average MLB game gets. Along with some of those numbers, ratings have gone up in the sport over the last few years, mainly due to marketing strategies NASCAR uses to attract ridership, and the racing quality, which has seen fans of the sport approve of the racing, while on the flip side being critical of how NASCAR approaches a weekly race. NASCAR has also been more vocal with its fans, and open to change from the fans and the drivers. NASCAR also has made an effort to turn towards the world of simulation with iRacing, which saw an increase of subscriptions to race virtual tracks, and pleased many fans for the exciting races which saw short, but satisfying bite sized races that casual fans could enjoy. I could continue on how the sport is not dead or how it's rising up the ranks again, but I'll leave it with this: This sport lives off of us, the race fans. We need to do everything we can to help this sport thrive once again, just like the golden ages of the 90s and 2000s. All of you have a part in this sport, and I want you to know you are essential to the culture of our sport. Watch races, buy merchandise, tailgate, show up to the track, root for a driver, get upset, be critical the sport, and everything else to help shape the sport into something people one day will see as a sport that is up there with the likes of the National Football League or the National Basketball Association: A mainstream sport. 52. Anon posted: 06.18.2020 - 10:06 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Heres how this race will go,just like every superspeedway has been the last few years. Lap 1-168: Mostly single file, some double file racing, maybe a spin or small crash in the back, goes by in about 2 hours. Last 20 laps: Giant crashes, stupid moves, only 15 cars left by the end,red flags and cautions take over 2 hours. Honestly,I really hope the new package prevents this. Im tired of every race just being a $10 million dollar junkyard. 55. Tarheel posted: 06.18.2020 - 10:32 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 54, agreed. Twenty years ago plate racing was different. The plates kept the cars from getting too strung out and the draft was an important part of it, but handling came into play a lot too. On older tires, a better handling car could make passes on its own, and the drivers actually had room to maneuver without taking out half the field. 56. Jimmie4life posted: 06.18.2020 - 10:39 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) The unfortunate thing about this package is, well, NASCAR wants the races not to end up single file where drivers are afraid to make moves, but in the process of doing that gave the teams too much Horsepower, which meant that moves were made too easily. I don't think this package will be much an improvement, other than safety. And, to add to #54, we're gonna see more crashes in the first 168 laps, as always. Someone will make a stupid move near the end of a stage just to get some of those "precious" points, only to tear up 10-15 cars, like Alex Bowman did last year, blocking that was overaggressive. 57. Anon posted: 06.18.2020 - 11:54 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @56 thats what this new package is trying to prevent. Incidents from aggressive blocking. Without the aero-ducts on the cars, the slipstream won't really be as effective. Instead of the trailing car being 10mph faster than the leading car,the trailing car should be more like 5mph faster. Basically,it gives the trailing car more control, and the leading car won't be forced to either let him pass,or make some insane block, crashing the field. 58. At some point before the roof flaps were introducted, NASCAR decided that a certain specific spoiler angle was needed for safety and to control speeds - that's when the braces behind the spoiler appeared, and teams could no longer adjust it during pit stops. Some while after that NASCAR determined (or at least thought they'd determined) that there was trickery going on with the spoilers, and started supplying them to the teams. Why they still do that, when they have the .001 inch tolerance laser measuring widget to catch cheaters, is a good question. (what NASCAR would really like to do at the plate tracks is race IROC cars, with all the parts supplied by NASCAR, but so far they haven't been able to force the teams to submit). 90. Either don't alienate the fans and see converged corporate America leave, or make the decision they did. Damned it they do, damned if they don't. They're all in at this point pandering to a crowd that has been immune to all of NASCAR's previous attempts to get them interested and watching. Access to the garage is limited, much more so since last month, so either someone in the sport is willing to potentially risk a high paying job or it's just a particularly shameful PR stunt. 167. Chevrolet saw their clip and was like "Bullsh*t". They tracked down the truck used in the demonstration and talked to people who were at the demonstration. It was found that NBC had: Lied about the speed of the car hitting the truck: Claimed 25, actually doing 40 mph. As for the person's identity, it will be known one way or another. If NASCAR doesn't have cameras (which I'd be shocked if they didn't,) the garage area is a small community. Surely, the perpetrator told at least one other person, or it was witnessed by at least one other person. That will get out eventually, even if there aren't cameras. But I'm sure hoping there are. Big overreaction here on Talladega, though. To punish over 100,000 fans for the bad behavior of a few isn't right, either. If he wins, people will think it's rigged, but I'd say "well, it's a superspeedway, so anyone can win!" Of course, people'd still believe in NASCAR rigging it, but anyways, hope he finishes top 10 or top 5. Shut up those haters, Wallace! 236. I will however be a little irked if there is kneeling, only because to me personally, I have had so many family members put their lives on the line to protect our nation and fight for that flag, to me, when someone kneels, no matter the reason for the kneeling, it is showing disrespect to them. That is all I'm going to say, disagree if you like, but that's just the way I feel. However, everyone is allowed to do whatever they want. He's had plenty of good plate runs, and with the cars being better, he should contend and I doubt anyone would bail on him today. I would also hate to be the driver who misaligned a bump draft accidentally and turns him. In Formula 1 you see teams order drivers to pull over and let a teammate pass or the like but in NASCAR if doesn't work as well due to varied sponsorships. In a hypothetical situation lets say Joe Gibbs Racing ordered Denny Hamlin to pull over and let Erik Jones win a race. You can bet FedEx would be on the phone the next day asking why its team was ordered to lose and there would be anger about it. Mid to late 90s you had Jeff Gordon sprinkled in with Wallace, Earnhardt, Martin, Bodine.. Then onto the Stewart, Harvick, JJ era.. is what it is. Always been that way. 348. It speaks to the stability of the cars that both stayed straight after the 38 left front touched the 20 right rear. What's a little confusing to me is that anybody working on a NASCAR team should have spent enough time in garages to have seen ropes tied to help pull garage doors shut. In the defense of whoever found it however, since it was a short weekend the crew member might not have seen it earlier while they were working on the car scrambling to make sure the car was ready for the race and the rope may have been tied differently than they were used to seeing. 846. And this kind of thing distracts and discredits the real cases. I know this wasn't intentional, by the crew member, Bubba, Nascar, or anyone. But we should try to the give people the benefit of the doubt. When Paul Menard had that stall in October, no one noticed or thought anything of the noose. But, because Bubba just happened to have the stall this year, all of a sudden the little noose that was used as a door pull is a racist hate crime. We have to think better of our fellow man. We can't jump to these kind of conclusions. This is the kind of thing that happens when people think the whole country is institutionally racist, which is a horrible lie. Whoever perpetrated this had one or both of the following motives: 1. Make the new "Conscience of NASCAR" an even more (sym)pathetic figure. 2. Make NASCAR look even more racist, which is a tactic designed to cause them to pander even more than they already have. After all, just banning some flag is hardly sufficient to atone for decades of transgressions. Now maybe they'll come up with some sizable contributions to certain organizations and causes in order to purchase exoneration for past "sins"? That's more like it. He complained away the Confederate flag and then hopped in a car with a terrorist organization on the hood at Martinsville. They are fighting to normalize equality because they simply do not have the same equality as the whites do in never. Changes are happening, and once Black Lives Matter becomes a success, then per evolution we grow into All Lives Matter. In order for All Lives Matter to truly be in affect, which is what so many of the citizens are using to counter #BLM, then we need to start equalizing ALL LIVES which is also associating those of Blacks, but if we cannot introduce Black Lives to a success of equalization then we cannot evolve into ALL LIVES MATTER, which defeats the purpose of **ALL** itself. This is what the supporters of #BLM are fighting for. The problem I'm seeing is there are those that are grown accustom to the "old American" ways, which I believe is to be the southern roots mainly, that they don't want their American style to change. I've seen firsthand those of that lifestyle to be extremely racist toward my black friends and its sickening, simply because he is a "proud, scrawny white American who can drink booze and drive big, dirty trunks" that doesn't have room for respect for those of different colored skin. Thus, is why we're at a civil war with each other, because that treatment toward our fellow Americans is uncalled for, and we all have something in common: Humans with feelings. We need to start building a better future for ourselves. We need to stop paying so much attention to the past, because that's all that is, THE PAST. The whites have been known to take want they want, when they want starting with taking the lands from the Natives, the same soil built that the NASCAR series races on, and introduced slavery torturing the Blacks. This isn't what we do as humanity anymore. Sadly there are those that are so hellbent on the past that they believe the treatment should still exist, because they feel the need of power or dominance to feel "good" about themselves. This explains the downfall that occurred with George Floyd because the power was abused without question by the policemen. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! We need to live for tomorrow, not for yesterday. If we cannot do this, then we're doomed for nothing but chaos and destruction for the rest of our lives and our children's lives. What happened in the garage area just screams overreaction. How no one even recognizes the noose as a rope for the garage door is beyond me, it's simply just a stupid moment for all, and it is to be better safe than sorry. If you agree with that perspective, that is certainly your right, but surely you don't agree with the violence that those in support of Marxism have brought about in recent weeks. Feminism is one of those ideas that sounds good on the surface until you dig deeper and come to understand that the whole feminist movement is actually rather harmful to women in a lot of ways. Yes, if BLM really wanted to help, they would choose an issue that is actually significant. Who is hurt most by all of this rioting? Black communities, where countless businesses probably won't return after all this is over. Who would be hurt the most by getting rid of the police? Black communities, because crime would escalate. While there are a small number of bad police officers out there, 99.9% of police interactions go well. With the case in MN that started all of this, the cop and the man he killed knew each other and had a troubled history. I think you mean well, but I also think you don't fully realize what these ideas and protests are really all about. Many people don't--it's not just you. That's why I encourage people to research more deeply. The bottom line is this: All of these issues/movements have the appearance of helping communities, but really don't do much to help at all and sometimes make things worse. I prefer to focus on ways to actually help those who are struggling and suffering. 892. Thanks to the threat of rain and the great package that we have now, there wasn't one moment of single file wall riding throughout the race. The craziest thing of all this was how clean the race was, with the biggest wreck involving 6 cars on the last lap. To top it all off, Ryan Blaney went back to back in spectacular fashion, winning by .007 seconds, the same margin of victory as his first Talladega win.
