Instead Daytona has moved back on the schedule to the weekend before Labor Day while the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis moves up to take its spot in July during the calendar. This race will be run without spectators due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. 3. Daytona was having some kind of tax fight with the city and the CART/USAC split was in full swing. It only took 40 years, but now it's happening. 4. RaceFanX posted: 06.30.2020 - 12:01 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The name of the race is a sign of the current times. This is the third year in a row that Big Machine Vodka is sponsoring this race but instead of being the "Big Machine Vodka 400" this year's race is the "Big Machine Hand Sanitizer 400." The Big Machine Distillery, much like many distillers in the United States, switched over some of its production to make vitally-needed hand sanitizer during the ongoing novel coronavirus pandemic. Distillers ready access to some of the alcohols needed for sanitizing paved the way for many to make a different product, alongside the pandemic-related closure of many bars reducing demand for vodka and other spirits leading distilleries to experiment with the goal of minimizing layoffs or shutdowns. 5. It's like changing the name of the Indianapolis 500 or the Daytona 500, we'll still call it by the name it normally was. 6. Can any of them do so with a win at Indianapolis this weekend? Almirola has never finished in the top 10 at Indy, but was impressive at Pocono and is on a streak of 4 consecutive top 5 finishes. Bowyer finished 5th at Indy in each of the last 2 years, leading 37 laps in 2018. DiBenedetto has mostly driven for backmarker teams at Indy, but in the last 2 races there, Paul Menard finished in the top 10 both times--one of his better tracks during his tenure with the Wood Brothers. Perhaps DiBenedetto can improve upon that this weekend. The Wood Brothers have been in all 25 Indy races but have never finished higher than 9th (Menard in 2018). Byron only has 2 starts at Indy, but finished a strong 4th last year. 19. 52 posted: 07.01.2020 - 8:56 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @18 Probably not. 20. This week, I want to look at the luck for each driver in these random draws. Since the draws were done in groups of 12, the highest possible starting position for a driver is 1 (1st, 13th & 25th) while the lowest possible is 12 (12th, 24th, 36th.) I excluded Open teams, because there are a maximum of 4 per race, which would give them all low numbers (indicating more luck.) The best possible luck is 1.0; the worst possible is 12.0. This is why they don't have qualifying so they don't have to bring backup cars. More cars equals more people back at the shop and add to that the extra people and preparation needed at tracks to go from a qualifying setup to a race setup. Not to mention the fact that COVID-19 cases have spiked in the counties Cabarrus and Mecklenburg. Already several shop members at Penske and SHR have gotten it. To my understanding at this time there will be no qualifying through the first week of August after that we will see. 35. I've been with Jimmie for almost 15 years, and to see him rise and fall down, it's been one hell of a ride. This is rock bottom, and now I wish the best for him and his family. It's almost bittersweet that his daughters gave the command in the previous week at Pocono on Sunday for the race start, on what could potentially be(if worst comes to worse, which we need to stay positive) Jimmie Johnson's last NASCAR race. This week will be one of reflection on just how dangerous and vulnerable we still are, and we need to all be serious about protecting others and ourselves from this pandemic. 46. Ryan Newman and Jimmie Johnson both came into 2020 tied for the longest consecutive start streak but both have now missed races this season, ending them. When they take the green flag Sunday Kevin Harvick's streak of 656 races will officially become the longest active one (Harvick's would already be the longest active if he didn't get parked for Martinsville early in the 2002 season for rough driving in a Truck race). The all-time record is 797 by Jeff Gordon from his debut in 1992 to his initial retirement at the end of the 2015 season. On the other side of the coin Justin Allgaier gets to make his first Cup start in just under four years dating back to a one-off at Bristol in August 2016. He was a Cup regular in 2014 and 2015 but this will be his first outing in the series with a truly competitive car...although not being able to practice or qualify it could be an issue come race day. 47. Hopefully NASCAR realizes from this (considering it's the 7-Time Champ who tasted positive and not Quinn Hoff for example) that perhaps the Playoffs shouldn't happen in 2020 and just stick with the old format of regular season title. It would be even more interesting if it caught exactly 3 of the 4. Then the remaining driver would be champion as soon as he finished a lap in the last race and comes into the classification, no matter how the race ends. Such cases also existed in the old system, when a driver had such a big lead that only a pure classification in the last race was enough to win the title. I think Dale Earnhardt has become such a champion in at least one case. 54. Maybe not even that because he has no symptoms. Like a large number of people who have tested positive. That should raise alot of questions in itself but thanks to the media, we live in the age of mass anxiety and fear. Which can be just as, if not, more harmful. 56. The reality is, even though the number of cases continues to increase rapidly, the number of deaths continues to fall, either because the virus is weakening or because we now know of some drugs that can help treat it. Johnson and the drivers around him in the standings have only been scoring an average of about 25 points per race this year. Missing 2 races (which seems most likely if there is a 14-day quarantine) wouldn't be devastating to his playoff hopes. 57. However, we should see a full race today. There's the potential for rain early in the afternoon (around 1-2 PM), but it should be partly cloudy by 4. That's important, because this track is so big, it could take up to 2.5 hours to dry. As of 11:30 AM ET, it looks like we have about a 90% chance of starting the race on time, an 85% chance of getting to halfway, and about a 65% chance of getting the whole race in. The average Brickyard 400 takes 3:02:25, and sunset is at 9:16 PM. That means, if it does rain, they likely need to start track drying by around 3:15 PM ET if they're going to get the whole race in. 63. 1995-Subaru-WRX-Sti posted: 07.05.2020 - 12:51 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "NASCAR is putting another race day in jeopardy by making the unwise decision to start a race at 4 PM track time at a track without lights." While Allgaier is a Hendrick driver by virtue of JR Motorsports being the Hendrick development team (just as Byron was), the difference is Allgaier has history in Cup, and he just wasn't all that impressive (Bowman on the other hand, while his absolute numbers weren't great in Cup in Balwin's car, impressed a lot of people by getting more from his equipment than was expected). While we have some examples of drivers suddenly developing in their later years (Dale Jarrett comes to mind) it's very uncommon. At 35 Allgaier is pretty much destined to finish his career in the Xfinity series. 78. Corey posted: 07.05.2020 - 4:35 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @73 The car is fully sponsored by Ally. Chevy took a huge hit (all at once) when they lost Jeff Gordon (retired from full time after 2015), Tony Stewart (not just as a driver, but as a team organization in Stewart-Haas Racing), Kevin Harvick (switched to Ford with Stewart-Haas Racing in 2017) and Dale Earnhardt, Jr when dealing with concussion that led to retirement. Rick Allen has gotten much better over the years and Letarte is really good at building drama. The green-flag pit stop sequence was so much more compelling with Letarte laying out the situation and Marty Snider giving more than the standard "four tires & fuel" in his reports. The broadcast also made the battle between Hamlin and Harvick with 15 to go was the same as last week late in the going, but I cared more about it this week. Why? Going into the last race at Atlanta he was ahead of Davey Allison by 156 points. If he finished last he would have gained 43 points at Atlanta enough to clear whatever Davey did because only 40 cars qualified. In 1980, he had to race Cale Yarborough for it being only ahead of Cale by 29 points going into Ontario. The Dale and Cale show. In '86, he won at Atlanta clinching the title with one race to go at Riverside. In '87, he clinched it when he started his engine in Feb. at Daytona (only kidding), or when he won six races in the first eight starts. You get the idea. In '90, he had to race Mark Martin for it at Atlanta being ahead by just six points. In '93, he had to finish 34th or better at Atlanta regardless of what Rusty did. He finished tenth. Rusty led the most laps and won the race, however, early in the race you would have thought that Dale was the one behind in the standings making three wide moves to gain positions. In '94, He wrapped up his seventh title by winning at Rockingham with two races remaining. So, really 1991 was the only season he needed just to start the race. Jeff Gordon came close in 1995. He just had to finished anywhere but last to win the title regardless of what Earnhardt did. Earnhardt led the most laps and won the race while Gordon finished 32nd. The final margin was 34 points. 305. I do not accept the argument that the lower ranks should be distinguishable. If several drivers have no points, there is still the tie-breaker about the best position in the course of the races. Such a driver with a 28th place would still land in front of a driver who only finished 29th. I hope that NASCAR will at least take over the current IndyCar points system. NASCAR later announced with its 2021 schedule about three and a half months later that the series would be racing on the Indianapolis infield road course the next year instead of the oval. There were rumors before this race that would happen, especially with the NASCAR Xfinity Series undercard event on the road course for this one. 356. Just another oddity about 2020. 357. Foote posted: 12.14.2020 - 8:13 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) This race and crash arguably ruined Erik Jones career. After having Ryan Blaney steal his win at Dega a few weeks earlier and being fast at Pocono 1 but have Tyler Reddick wreck him, he finished 3rd (in a backup car) at Pocono 2 and had EXTREME speed in this race. Chris Gayle made a rare good pit call and he finished p2 in stage 1, and after pitting at the stage break, was FLYING back towards the top of the field in only a few laps. Another top 3 seemed not only possible, but he could have been in the mix for the win, and he would have bolstered his playoff position. Instead, after going from 15th to 10th in a few laps, he blew a tire and hit the wall as hard as I've ever seen in recent Nascar history. Although Nascar never released the g-force numbers, it's one of the most devastating impacts I've ever seen, and I believe it's been underrated exactly how violent the impact was. I challenge anyone to show me a more violent right-front tire failure in Nascar history. So instead of competing for another top 5 and bolstering playoff hopes, Jones was distraught in the interview about how unlucky the season had been. The 20 team was a top 5-10 car every week and something always happened. Well, after this race, the 20 team stopped bringing fast cars and fell apart. He went to Kentucky, where he finished on the podium in 2019, and ran in the mid 20s all race and finished 22nd. He went to Loudon, where he finishes on the podium in 2019, and ran in the mid 20s all day. He'd been having a struggling year before this due to ungodly bad luck, but after this race, Jones and the 20 team lost some speed, and his upside with JGR had been neutered. 358.
