Will we get a third in a row? 2. Canadianfan posted: 07.21.2020 - 10:56 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Christopher Bell is movin on up. From Bob Pockrass: Forgot to mention last night & reminded in listening to Jeff Gluck & Jordan Bianchi podcast (The Teardown) this morning... Leavine Family Racing now 23rd in points so will be part of 13-24th draw. JTG Daugherty 47 (Stenhouse) dropped from 24th to 25th so he will start 25-36th. Also From Bob Pockrass: A Thursday night Cup race at Kansas is a way for NBCSN to get a weeknight Cup race, according to the track. (This tweet from June 5th was when this part of the schedule was originally announced and NASCAR had no way of knowing that this would be opening night for MLB.) 3. Bell - 325 points 24. Custer - 322 points 25. Stenhouse - 321 points 26. McDowell - 320 points So by 1 point, Custer will draw from the middle group while Stenhouse will draw from the last group at Kansas. During the 2-month COVID break earlier this year, Bell ranked 32nd in points while Stenhouse was 17th. They have certainly been moving in opposite directions since then. 4. Then the #78 decided to run and then they called up McLeod and said we're going to withdraw would you like to make some kind of deal for our sponsorship because the #78 ran the same sponsorship that the #90 had planned to run on Sunday. 8. The iRacing races can start by a quick qualifying. 14. Canadianfan posted: 07.21.2020 - 5:27 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @10 and @11 I'm sure the teams are very happy that they're saving money that would normally go to paying for gas which is not free for practicing and qualifying it is free on race day and extra tires. Also they don't have to build backup cars except for doubleheaders. Another money saving measure. 15. Take the best time for each driver from the previous race, 1-40 or 39 or however many drivers where in the previous race, and boom there's the lineup. Mile501 posted: 07.21.2020 - 8:44 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @12 - I think I posted this somewhere else a few weeks ago, but even if they continue to do qualifying draws, they could still mix it up a bit. For example, say the top 12 drivers draw from spots 1-15. The 3 numbers that don't get drawn would then be available for the next group to pick from. 27. Anon posted: 07.21.2020 - 8:51 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) @23 Reed Sorensen had the fastest lap on 4 individual laps in this year's Daytona 500. Might want to rethink your statement. @24 I'm surely in the minority here, but when attending in person I love attending practice, and single car qualifying is my favorite part of a race weekend. If nascar never has practice or qualifying again, it would be hard for me to justify the 8-16 hour drives 1 way that it requires from me to attend a race. No practice and no qualifying means no attendance from me unfortunately. I am sure that's a laughable statement to many, but it is very true for me. 28. I'm going out on a limb a little bit because he's not been able to close out a number of races he probably should have won, but sooner or later he'll get that monkey off his back. He's also been pretty solid at Kansas for his career, even scoring top tens three Kansas races in a row while driving the 43, and those races were bracketed by 5th and 3rd starting positions. With the speed he's had over the past two months, he's my pick. 38. Ralphie posted: 07.23.2020 - 8:49 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I hope we can continue the new trend of fluke winners. Almirola despite his recent consistency, Newman, DiBenedetto, or pretty much anyone in a Chevy would all fit the "fluke" description, among those with any real chance at all. But I wonder if what we are considering to be Almirola's great "speed" lately is just a product of him starting on the pole and being able to hold the lead for a while in these days of clean-air-is-king/nothing-else-matters. If he doesn't start with the clean air, will he really be able to make his way to the front or will he just be a borderline top-10 car but nothing more (much like a typical week for Matt D., KuBu, at most 1 Hendrick car in a given week, etc.)? 39. Foote posted: 07.23.2020 - 9:01 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) 38 Almirola or Matt D would be upsets but not flukes. I agree about your point about Aric though. Foote posted: 07.23.2020 - 9:48 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 37 He also had a race I think in 2012 at RPM where he was easily the fastest car in the race but hit the wall and blew a tire. He's good at Kansas. I just could see this being the Harvick show. 41. Corey posted: 07.23.2020 - 10:04 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) @38 I think you need to reconsider what is a fluke win. Driving a Chevy doesn't make it a fluke and neither were Custer or Dillons wins. You consider Cole Custer taking the lead after going four wide to be a fluke. If Kyle Busch did the same thing, would that be a fluke, or just an example of his talent? Austin Dillon teams used strategy to get to the front but he still had to hold them off for two additional restarts. Replace him with any of the usual winners and would it be a fluke? Does that make Brad Keselowski's victory in the Coke 600 a fluke? Or Joey Logano's at Las Vegas? Fluke wins are those that come under very unique circumstances, like Justin Haley's at Daytona, or Joey Logano's first win at Loudon, or David Reutimann's at Charlotte. 42. Tarheel posted: 07.23.2020 - 11:08 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 38, you do realize that you can look up statistics for any driver and any race on this website don't you? Almirola did not score those finishes because he "started on the pole". He scored those finishes because they've genuinely been fast. At Homestead, Talladega, and Pocono 2 he started 21st, 15th, and 18th. We all know Talladega is a crapshoot, but in those other two races he drove from midpack to the top five, period. After that he started getting first round draws because those good finishes got him into the top twelve in points. There is nothing flukey about the 10 team, they've gotten where they are the old fashioned way. 44. Unfortunately, he just didn't have it on the short runs tonight. He did awesome to get fourth. JGR with three top-5 finishers. The only one missing, KFB. He did rally to get a respectable 11th, however. Custer with a nice top-10 finish. 242. KevinColley posted: 07.23.2020 - 11:20 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) To me, it has been a solid year. Entering this race Ryan Blaney was second (-91) in standings, but due to his trouble in 20th place result, he loses 9 points and is now 3rd in standings, exactly 100 points back. Brad Keselowski gained 9 points from 106 points to 97, leaving the race in second in standings. They are the only two drivers within the 120 point gap to Kevin, and since 60 points is the max amount of points to receive in a race, everyone else are a full two races behind Harvick now. 246. With the way they've been running this season, it would be fitting to see Kurt Busch and Aric Almirola reach victory lane before the playoffs as well. Denny needlessly using his energy far too early in the season is just going to result in another blown opportunity for a championship that he won't win and seeing him steal this win so late out of practically nowhere is going to leave a bad taste in my mouth since we aren't going to be seeing another Cup race for 10 days now. 253. In my opinion, it seems like the driver swap has hurt both teams this season. Meanwhile, after his 4th straight DNF, Preece has dropped below Suarez in points. Preece is simply having an awful season. Meanwhile, Suarez tied his best finish of the season (18th). For the 5th time in the last 6 races, 3 SHR cars finished in the top 10. In both Pocono races, Custer was the one who didn't. At Indy, Kentucky, and Kansas, Bowyer was the one who didn't. I imagine Bowyer's future at SHR could depend, at least in part, on whether or not he makes the playoffs. If he keeps running like he has been lately, he is definitely in danger of not making it. Battle for the final 3 playoff spots (not the same as driver points): 14. Bowyer +32 15. DiBenedetto +25 16. Byron 17. Reddick -10 18. Jones -12 19. Johnson -18 Barring another surprise winner, 3 of those drivers will make it and 3 won't. 267. Chase9Fan posted: 07.24.2020 - 8:39 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 252. At least no in their entirety. I'm sure a lot of other fans are in the same boat. But if your mid-week races are bringing lower ratings then the Weekend show, then they have to go. And it's not just Kansas. Darlington2- 1.22 Charlotte2- .91 Martinsville- 1.07 Kansas- .9 By comparison, the ratings weekend cable sports networks are Bristol-1.74 Pocono2-1.62 Kentucky-1.57 Now I realize that three of the four weekday races couldn't be helped. In NASCAR's goal to get all the races in, they had to sue things outside the norm.
