Bell's last 8 draws within his group: 11, 10, 9, 10, 11, 12, 11, 12 Almirola's last 8 draws within his group: 1, 3, 1, 4, 5, 1, 3, 9, 2 I won't bore anyone with statistics (I'm a math nerd), but this is right on the border of "statistically impossible" for those two to have that. If Almirola didn't have that 9, it would've crossed into the "statistically impossible" spectrum. I am neutral on both of these drivers, but anyone defending this draw is choosing to ignore how statistically unlikely these results have become at this point. Let them run a qualifying lap on iracing or nascar heat 5, anything is better than this. 16. If they are deciding this with a computer program, something is wrong with the code. Almirola constantly top 5,Bowman constantly 8th-10th,Johnson constantly around 20th,Christopher Bell constantly low 30s. These are just a few of the anomalies that are border line impossible. Its like they are just shifting names up or down 2-3 spots (that is if they even move from where they started last week) from where they were the week prior and calling it a day. Ryan Blaney won two Talladega races in a row by .007 seconds. One would think that would be statistically improbable, yet it happened. The question of why can go both ways. Why is Almirola constantly getting good draws and Bell bad one's. We can also ask, why is it Almirola and Bell that its happening to. If NASCAR were trying to push a guy, wouldn't it be Chase Elliott? Christopher Bell's situation should resolve itself in the next race. the 95 is only 2 points behind the 34 in owners points. If he can get the team up to 24th, he'll start no worse then that for the next race. Also, I see no reason why NASCAR would want to keep him starting in the mid-30's every week. He's only a rookie. Transparency for the draws would be a good thing. They don't even have to do a TV thing. Just show it on YouTube or NASCAR.com/ 25. What posted: 07.30.2020 - 7:54 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) @20 Statistical impossibility has nothing to do with the fact he's won 3 poles (though your math is very simplistic and flawed, as the probability of 3 poles in this statistical example is 0.057%, extremely low but clearly not statistically impossible). The statistical near-impossibility has to do with the random draw results for Bell and Almirola over the last 8 races, and if you use a bell curve (humorous name considering the subject) if you throw out Almirola's lone poor draw it falls in the "statistically impossible" range. I'm guessing my math won't be believed, but the probability of what happened to Almirola and Bell the last two months is 1 in 50 million. How is that not worth at least questioning? I don't understand why using statistical analysis, and stating such results, has drawn so much ire from the RR community. I thought the point of a site like this was to be statistics-based after all, which is what drew me here in the first place. I guess I'll see myself out. 26. So if you're in the top 12 in points for 12 consecutive weeks, you start each position between 1st and 12th once and can't repeat a starting position until the 13th week. 27. Mile501 posted: 07.30.2020 - 8:33 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) This is the 12th qualifying draw. Almirola has ranked among the top 12 in points for 10 of those draws. He has drawn a top 5 starting spot each time. Probability: 0.00016 (about 1 in 6250) The probability of rolling a pair of dice 10 times and rolling a sum of 6 or less each time is the same. Very unlikely, for sure, but it could happen on occasion. Bell has ranked 25th or worse in points for 11 of the draws. He has drawn a starting spot between 32nd and 36th 9 times. Probability: 0.00038 (about 1 in 2500) But when you stop looking at a specific driver and just look at the probability that this could happen to any one particular driver, the probabilities drop to 1 in a few hundred. Probability of Johnson starting 20th 4 races in a row: 0.000048 (1 in 20736) (Disclaimer: I think all these probabilities are correct, but it is certainly possible that I made a mistake.) I don't think NASCAR is doing anything intentional here; I see no purpose in doing that. However, there is enough reason to ask questions. Perhaps there is something like an error in a computer program. 28. possum posted: 07.30.2020 - 8:36 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @24 - wasn't the draw broadcast on FS1 Race Hub during the FOX part of the season? (I dunno as I don't watch it, but I thought they promoted that at one point). It would be interesting to know what the actual mechanics of the draw are. If it's computer generated, it could be manipulated (altho then the question of "why" is obvious and unanswerable). If it's an actual draw out of a hat it would be pretty difficult to manipulate. Incidently, I don't think What has factored the order of the draw into his statistics, which would have a bearing if they actually draw out of a hat. 29. What has not been explained and why we do not agree with the rigged assertion are why Aric Almirola and Christopher Bell are the ones this is happening to. You're talking about a rookie and a journeyman driver. Neither are very controversial and don't move the fan base meter all that much. So why would NASCAR rig it in favor of Almirola and against Bell? This is not defending the draw, this is questioning the theory. The fact that people would rather attack the commenters instead of answering the question, provides evidence that they don't have an explanation and just want people to "blindly" follow along. 31. That means when they draw there's only five balls left or pills or whatever. That means they have a one and five shot if the pole is there to get it. If the pole isn't taken in the first seven spots it's very advantageous to have a late draw. Race 5 they were 8th in owner points they drew 5th. Race 6 was the invert they started 9th. Race 7 they qualified and he started last because he spun in qualifying. Race 8 was another invert and he started 6th. Race 9 they were 9th in owner points they drew 2nd. What I take from his argument is, statistically, it's more likely some nascar big whig is messing with the fans on a couple drivers just for kicks. Do I believe that to be the case? You are also forgetting Bell has had one draw in the 13-24 range if I'm not mistaken. All it would take is transparency, which as someone else said above, is not the strong suit of this sport in any situation. To the people question why it could be rigged against Bell. Critic posted: 07.31.2020 - 12:59 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) If NASCAR is interfering with the lottery to benefit Almirola, the only logical explanation is that NASCAR has been informed that Smithfield is preparing to reduce their sponsorship or even withdraw from the sport altogether in 2021, and they are hoping to influence Smithfield's decision. I doubt that NASCAR would decide to bestow favors upon someone who does not have a major following, has never won outside of a superspeedway, and was regarded as little more than a pay-driver (one with a modest amount of ability, certainly, but not much more than Paul Menard) before his recent run of form, unless there was a compelling reason for NASCAR to intervene on his behalf. While I normally dismiss this sort of speculation, there is precedent for NASCAR to assist a sponsor that is questioning its commitment to the sport. It's common knowledge now that NASCAR permitted Junior Johnson to run an illegal manifold (or some other engine component, I invite correction) on the No. 27 at Daytona and Talladega in 1994 to placate McDonald's, which was extremely disillusioned with Spencer's antics and on the verge of leaving the sport. Improving Almirola's starting position each week would be a rather elegant way to increase Smithfield's television exposure without distorting the results of each race too dramatically, since Almirola is in the top-12 in points on merit. NASCAR might feel that it has to do all it can to retain a loyal, lucrative sponsor at a moment when the economy is in a state of collapse and sponsorship opportunities are evaporating for everyone. Of course, due to the the serious limitations of the high downforce package, starting at the front is far more important than it was two years ago; and if Almirola and his team understand that they will be lining up in first two rows of the grid each week, then they can take advantage of that in terms of setup, with some influence on his results. As for the subject of the qualifying draw itself: I understand why it was instituted in May, and I was willing to tolerate it for a short period time, but I still regard the method as utterly illegitimate for a proper championship. I am convinced that NASCAR could devise a more suitable alternative if it was so inclined. Even using each driver's fastest lap from the preceding race would be more appropriate to me than relying on a lottery, in the sense that it would have a direct connection to a driver's performance, just as normal qualifying does. I also didn't expect NASCAR to replace the draw before the end of the year, because from NASCAR's perspective, randomness is an adequate substitute for competitiveness. 36. As I mentioned yesterday, and Canadianfan provided more detail on in @33, the order in which the teams draw is important (and is missing from What's analysis). @35 - that's a not unreasonable theory, but it fails to explain why Bell consistantly draws poorly. Certainly NASCAR is not trying to discourage Bell's sponsor. If we can't find a rational explanation for why NASCAR would meddle with both draws, then we're back to assuming it is just random chance. 41. I still think it is impressive, but I think it's not the most impressive. Even I think Kevin has something more impressive 7 straight top 5's also I think Aric Almirola getting 9 straight top 10's is more impressive, and brad getting at least 3 wins for 5 seasons is also really impressive. It is impressive, but not as impressive as other stuff today. That's what I meant 331. This is Bad Brad's second NHMS win, he previously won here in a red #2 in 2014. 332. It seems like they're trending upwards as far as talent goes, within a few years Chase, Byron, Bowman, and Reddick should all progress quite a bit (assuming they all stay Chevy) and Hamlin, Busch, Harvick, Truex, and even Logano and Keselowski are all getting to that point where they should start falling off soon, within the next 2-5 years we should see a changing of the guard, which should help Chevy seeing as their best driver is 24 333. Most New Hampshire races are forgettable, but that doesn't mean they're not good races. Hamlin and Keselowski were short tracking it. Track position shmack position, there was lots of passing today. Keselowski finally wins a race he was leading with 10 to go, for the first time since Martinsville last Spring. We had 11 cautions, the most since the fall of 2014. We had 22 lead changes. At New Hampshire. That's tied for the 2nd most ever at the track, behind the 1996 and Summer 2002 races, which had 23. Really can't find a fault with this race. Props to guys like JJ Yeley and James Davison who were on the lead lap, during the final run. Onto Michigan for a doubleheader 347. And maybe got even more fans liking him more more popular of a win than anybody at least since fans came back, we won't see them until Daytona. But more popular than anybody else, but want to see ratings cause NBA, NHL, and MLB they got less ratings than NASCAR's return race from Darlington if you think about it. 350.
