This track, made famous by the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona that kicks off Speedweeks each year, was added to the Cup series schedule mid-season as a one-off replacement when the Covid-19 pandemic made it impossible for the series to hold its annual race at Watkins Glen so the tour needed another road course fast. As a kicker despite this being a new track the teams agreed to run this race without practice or qualifying so the first lap many drivers run here in real life will be the opening lap of the race. The Cup series already had scheduled a race on the road course here before this race. The plan was for this track to make its NASCAR debut in 2021 with the non-championship Busch Clash being run on the road course instead of the oval. Now the roval layout will see its first Cup action in a points-paying event instead. 2. TeamDCRfan posted: 08.11.2020 - 9:34 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Surprised to see the 62. Kyle wants to keep Roval as the only track he has not won at, with Watkins Glen back for 2021. Might be only race at Daytona RC, could be another rockingham 2.0 4. Ultimately it didn't come together and Taylor was left to joke on social media "If I had $10 for every time I spoke to a NASCAR team about a road course race, I'd probably have enough money to do a NASCAR road course race." 5. Brendan Gaughan (2011, 2016, 2018 Rolex 24s) Kyle Busch (2020 Rolex 24? also competed in 2009 Paul Revere 250) Michael McDowell (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2012 Rolex 24s? and 2005 and 2006 Paul Revere 250s) Jimmie Johnson (2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 Rolex 24s? and 2007 Paul Revere 250) James Davison (2014, 2015 and 2016 Rolex 24s) Kurt Busch (2005 and 2008 Rolex 24s) Matt Kenseth (2005 Rolex 24, 2006 IROC Race 3) Timmy Hill (2012 Rolex 24) Clint Bowyer (2013 Rolex 24) Kevin Harvick (2002 Rolex 24) Ryan Newman (IROC Race 3) Martin Truex Jr. (IROC Race 3) Brendan Gaughan is the only driver to have won a race on this course. The 3.560, mile lap length is the longest for the Premier series since they last ran the Daytona Beach and Road Course in 1958. That one was 4 miles. The 65 laps is also the fewest number of laps for a points paying Cup race since the second 1971 Daytona 500 Qualifier race. That race was only 50 laps long. 1971 was the last year the Premier gave full race points for the qualifying races. 7. Last week Ryan Blaney placed 38th and Brad Keselowski was 39th Keselowski is 2nd in standings and Blaney is 4th From those two stats alone the metric gives them scores of Blaney (38*.5)+(4*.35)=19+1.4=20.4 Keselowski (39*.5)+(2*.35)=19.5+.7=20.2 Now factor in the fastest lap, Keselowski had the 2nd fastest, Blaney had the 15h. Blaney 20.4+(15*.15)=20.4+2.25=22.65 Keselowski 20.2+(2*.15)=20.2+.3=20.5 Keselowski start 17th in the race and Blaney starts 24th and that difference can be attributed to the fastest lap. 21. It's been 15 races since we had an official qualifying rewards in which it rewards poles (every race since has been set by drawings and inversions of the previous race). He is also the inaugural pole winner of the Daytona Road Course track for it's first ever race in the NASCAR Cup series. Mile501 posted: 08.12.2020 - 1:11 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) Though I doubt NASCAR will change their plan now, here's an idea: The starting lineup could be set based on the number of green flag passes in the most recent race. Advantages: - Slow cars like the Rick Ware teams would still be at the back because they typically don't pass many cars - Drivers who improved throughout the race would generally be rewarded with good starting spots - Drivers that led a lot wouldn't start at the front (since anyone who led a lot of laps wouldn't make as many passes) - It would mix things up without putting slow cars at the front. A driver like Harvick or Hamlin would pass a lot of cars when they start farther back, giving them a better starting spot next time. Here's how the lineup for this race would look under this format: (1st-10th) 47 6 8 37 3 41 42 10 19 88 (11th-20th) 32 22 37 43 20 13 95 1 24 48 (21st-30th) 9 11 14 12 34 18 21 38 2 4 (31st-40th) 96 15 00 77 27 51 53 66 62 32. UnderdogFan89 posted: 08.12.2020 - 2:09 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) #32 I'm generally a pretty passive guy. But yes, calls for normal qualifying are selfish. NASCAR made its reasoning perfectly clear: to protect drivers, teams, officials, track personnel, and safety workers (and fans when they are able to attend) by limiting at-track time, as well as a way to limit the financial aspect for teams that are struggling with sponsors (recall that at least two drivers in the lower series have essentially lost their rides because of sponsors leaving, and the #95 mentioned in their transcript that they are having a hard time selling remaining races). Adding qualifying is essentially adding time at track, cost, and wouldn't change THAT much with the weekend. By advocating for qualifying, you are essentially giving a middle finger to all those reasons, saying you value your entertainment over them. In my eyes, that's the definition of selfish. Let me be clear on one thing: Normal qualifying is the best way to determine a starting lineup, and better than any way NASCAR can up with. Period. End of story. I wholeheartedly agree. I also wholeheartedly agree that the $800k house that's for sale down the street is better than my townhouse that I rent. That doesn't mean I'm buying it anytime soon. Better (or even best) isn't always an option. We have to deal with what we've got. Perhaps calling out people isn't the right way, so for that I'm sorry. But what I don't understand are those who criticize MASCAR for trying to put a show on for fans and keep a livelihood for all the teams while still attempting to be as safe and cost effective as possible. Thanks for listening to my rant. We shall agree to disagree I suppose. Good day to you all. 38. UnderdogFan89 posted: 08.12.2020 - 2:14 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Lol at MASCAR. Typo alert! 39. While other series may have practice and qualifying, their schedules have had even more upheaval than NASCAR's has had. By running all 36 races, NASCAR is atleast allowing the themselves and the teams the opportunity to fulfill contract obligations. Formula 1 was supposed to have had 22 races this year. 11 of those have already been formally cancelled, with 2-4 more joining them at some point. As of now, they only have 13 races on the calendar, all in Europe. While that's a major drop in expense, it's also going to be a major drop in income. 40. Canadianfan posted: 08.12.2020 - 2:47 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) @37 I also wanted to add to your post that tires cost money this is one less set that they have to buy. Tommy Joe Martins was mentioning earlier this year that 25% of his total budget for the year is tires. Also although yes gas is free on race day you have to pay for that the entire rest of the time including qualifying that's just another savings. And of course the main reason being no backup cars are needed except for doubleheaders. 41. Canadianfan posted: 08.12.2020 - 3:16 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I just had an epiphany. What if the networks don't want to broadcast practicing and qualifying. What if they went to NASCAR and said hey we're hurting and to save money we won't broadcasting anything other than the race. You guys can go on and do all of that but it won't be covered by us. That would explain why ARCA is still practicing since they don't have any practice coverage anyways. NASCAR then went to the teams and explained the situation and the majority of teams said well it doesn't make sense for us to do that because we won't get any extra viewing time for our sponsors and what not so we just won't practice and qualify. I have said on multiple occasions that the networks have a lot more pull on the sport than anyone really understands especially the start times which I know bother a lot of people. 42. dw posted: 08.12.2020 - 3:47 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) Canadianfan, I believe Door Bumper Clear said something similar to that a few weeks back. We're never going to live the lives of public entertainment and gatherings, or being able to shake hands and taking a photo with your favorite driver, celebrities or idols. The idea of "you only live once, YOLO and follow your dreams" goes out the door and we're just stuck. The government is setting themselves and its people up to fail. Businesses are shutting down and being ran out without a money-making process in place (like Bob Leavine). Causing struggles for many citizens without enough money to make a living and to keep up with bills while the government argues about providing the income, rather than granting waiver of sort (not speaking for unemployment, but for those who still worked as essential employers with cut hours). I feel for the senior students who are denied an opportunity to play sports in their last year in high school. Hell, even if you wanted to go for a jogging on a hot, 90 degree weather down the street or at the reservoir, you're due for a fine or ticket without a face covering for the sole purpose of "it protects people" (which for anyone who can only respond with that is a complete robot). So much for positive memories. Say what you will about anything in life today (which is impacted and related to anything we do in life today, even racing/NASCAR), we're all living in fear and returning to normality is a fantasy. At least not in our lifetime. I like the no practice idea, and if this qualifying format is a thing of the future then by all means, the question we should be asking ourselves while we're watching racing (we didn't ask ourselves this before Bob Leavine said his business was in a deep struggle, or that Hendrick Motorsports was rumored to drop to a three-car team) is how much more of a struggle are going on behind the scenes and waiting to come out that they, too, are stepping down? As I said, we're all setting ourselves up to fail. 44. "Strokers" could draw first as someone mentioned and they could be ran over top of and the big one could be on the first lap and take out several good cars. I believe that's just too dangerous. I'm a fan of Harvick, but I disagree with the random draw. There's just too big of a difference in speed compared to say JGR and Penske to Quin Houff, Garrett Smithley and Timmy Hill. This created a situation where a lot of the slower teams would be starting ahead of the faster ones. On that race page, you'll notice that four of those cars fell to the back on the pace laps and the reason given was drivers choice. If they did a full field random draw and a guy like Houff did get the pole. It's likely that he would dropped to the back before the start. Anyway, moving on... "We have to deal with what we've got." That isn't necessarily always the case; Those who work hard to be successful and is a "go-getter" overrules this. As for #39, I didn't know why NASCAR didn't qualify while other major series such as Formula One does, such as FOX not wanting anything other than the race itself on broadcast (even then they could still qualify without broadcast). That makes sense. In this case if the pole formula allows Harvick to start up front more regularly with how fast he's been every race than 8th or 10th then I have no complaint. 50. Enter Kaz Grala. He's driven a road course already this year for RCR, finishing 4th at Road America, but isn't entered in the 21 this week (sports car ace Earl Bamber is making his NASCAR debut in that car.) This is an amazing opportunity for him. RCR this weekend: #3 Cup - Grala's Cup debut, #8 Cup - Reddick's Cup road course debut, #21 Xfinity - Bamber's Xfinity debut. Now, for the third straight "ROVAL" race, he DNF'd again. Martin Truex, Jr continues his streak of third place finishes; This is his fifth in a row dating back to Kansas. Kaz Grala substituted Austin Dillon (who was tested positive for COVID-19) for this race, led a few laps and finished in the Top 10 in his very first Cup start ever. Chase Elliott wins for the second straight ROVAL races in a row, winning the 2019 Charlotte ROVAL race as well. Even further back on road courses, he won the 2019 Watkins Glen race as well for 3 in a row. Kevin Harvick's streak of 9 straight Top 5 entering this race ends with a 17th place finish, coming off of two wins in a row last weekend at two Michigan races. Furthermore, before this weekend I had a bet that Chase Elliott would win the inaugural race here. It's only fitting that out of all drivers he'd be the one to accomplish it (since Kyle Busch at Kentucky, Kevin Harvick at Chicago and Ryan Blaney at the Charlotte ROVAL all have an inaugural win under their belt). Congrats to Elliott! What's also ironic is that Chase Elliott has never finished in the Top 10 in a points paying race at the oval version of Daytona in 9 starts. All he needed was a race in the infield at Daytona to score a Top 10, which ended up being a win. In two weeks we head back to Daytona after the Dover double header weekend, let's see if this victory breaks that curse at the oval version. 271. But I digress.... This is actually why I am in favor of a slightly different format/policy for DNFs. Rather than a timed clock to get fixed on a crash, and unlimited time for mechanical issues, I've always been in favor of a "number of laps down" policy. This would differ track to track of course, as 5 laps here and 5 laps at Martinsville are very different. Anyway, just choose a relevant number of laps per track, and if a driver goes down that many laps, regardless of the reason, they are out. This would have prevented both the 18 and 77 from returning to the track in this one. The 77 car has actually done this many times, for example they were 50 laps down at Martinsville earlier this year and still out there. Just pick a lap amount that makes sense for the given track, like maybe for this race 4 laps would make sense, but Martinsville maybe 10-15. As soon as you are that many laps down, you're out. 307. I'm guessing RCR is going to have Austin Dillon on the entry list, and not declare him out until the last possible moment in case he can be cleared. Should he not be able to race, and should they select Kaz for the 3, NASCAR in there always short-sighted decision making will probably consider it a "post-entry driver change" or something along those lines, and make them start last. RCR would be smart to put Kaz on the entry list, or at least finding out what NASCAR's official rule will be to ensure Kaz can start 11th if he's the driver. Put Kaz on the entry list, and if Austin can race, make the switch. They'd give up the 11th spot if Austin drives anyway. If Austin is announced and then does start, he starts 33rd, so no big loss to drop from 33rd to 38th-40th on a late-announced driver change. But, if Kaz drives the car and has to start 38th-40th on a technicality when he "earned" the 11th starting position, well to put in kindly, that would not be cool. 309. This past race Chase took the green and white checkered at the end of Lap 15 and starts Lap 16. While the running order freezes at the line, the track is still under green conditions until the rest of the Top 10 crosses it, then the caution flag is actually thrown. The pace car is probably positioned in a spot where they can quickly pick up the field on the same lap. They can then open pit road and begin lap 17. Everyone pits and give the long lap time, NASCAR can check the order and give the going green symbol on the same lap. Green flag waves to start lap 18. Also, keep in mind that road courses don't have a one to go signal at the line. Usually they have another point along the track, where they'll tell the teams going green this time by. 321.
