The track is making its first Playoffs appearance since the Chase's inaugural season back in 2004! It was the last race before the season finale race at the time, now it's the first race of the Playoffs. Throwback themes continue. 7-time champion Jimmie Johnson is representing his fellow 7-time champions Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt. The top hood and trunk are colored in red/blue style that Petty drove with his STP scheme, and the sides are surrounded in black with red lines to separate the gray around the bottom. The 48 fonts on top and on the side are differently in that they represent the style of fonts both Petty and Earnhardt had as well. All four of Johnson's teammates, Chase Elliot, Alex Bowman and William Byron, are also running paint schemes to represent Jimmie Johnson, as Johnson has planned to retire after the 2020 season. Chase Elliott is running the paint scheme Johnson had during his 2009 championship season. William Byron will bring back Jimmie Johnson's 2013 All-Star Race win with the patriotic look. Alex Bowman's blue and yellow scheme honors Jimmie Johnson's first Cup championship from the 2006 season. 2. During the coronavirus shutdown Hill was one of the drivers who took part in the NASCAR Pro Invitational iRacing Series, he won the digital Texas race before wheeling out a virtual Phil Parsons' #66 throwback for that series' special finale race at North Wilkesboro in May just before real racing resumed. Hill finished second in that race to Denny Hamlin and now he gets to race the Parsons #66 throwback for real. 7. William24ByronFan posted: 09.01.2020 - 11:37 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) J.J. It really makes them stand out and I particularly like Timmy Hill's, Cole Custer's and Austin Dillion's. Brad Keselowski, Christopher Bell and Daniel Suarez are each throwing it back to themselves. Each will the paint scheme from their championship years in the Xfinity and Truck Series. As always their are a few duds. One in that category this year is Erik Jones'. He's running a Home Depot throwback pattern from 2005, however his sponsor is using their own colors. I've always felt that the throwback gets lost in translation when they old colors aren't used. 9. chevyfan98 posted: 09.01.2020 - 12:41 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Haven't posted under this name in three years but what's once more for old times sake. Not really enthusiastic about what would be a de facto expansion of the JGR empire (and by extension, the Toyota team works). However, it would not be a good look for NASCAR if charters were up for sale in the offseason and no buyers were lined up to take them. The current owners need to believe those have some cash value attached to them, or that whole business model falls apart. Keep an eye on this one. 16. Actually it wouldn't look good for the RTA, Rob Kauffman, and all the teams involved. Because they pushed it, bought it, and are now dealing with it. NASCAR didn't want it, everyone else BUT NASCAR wanted it. So when it does fall apart (and it well) everyone involved will run to NASCAR for a handout and you know what Jim France should say? Danish_Pie posted: 09.01.2020 - 9:53 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Darlington had two dates for many years, while other tracks with two races that have a marquee event (Daytona, Charlotte) don't lose any luster for having that additional race. It's not unreasonable, and the track has made a big comeback in popularity since nearly falling off the schedule in the early 2000's, so I would definitely like to see Darlington get that spring race back. 21. Canadianfan posted: 09.01.2020 - 11:13 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @21 North Wilkesboro leaving the schedule wasn't NASCAR's fault Smith and Bahre each bought half the track and took each of the two dates to their own facilities. That's just a business decision nothing more. Rockingham was the same situation. Penske Speedways sold the track to ISC they took the fall date and gave it to California. Then you had the Ferko lawsuit which led to ISC to be forced to sell Rockingham to SMI taking its remaining date for Texas. 23. Chevrolet has the opposite problem. Chevrolet has the most cars in the field, but Ford has the most cars in the playoffs, as well as the most wins and laps led. 28. I call them "viable" teams/drivers, which I define loosely as a team capable at least once in a while of earning a top 10 or even a top 5 on a non-plate track or roval without it being a total fluke. Chevy: Hendrick, Ganassi, Childress and a noticeable drop to JTG & RPM. All Chevy teams obviously rank below JGR, Penske & SHR from 2018-present except perhaps for the pre-Charlotte "chassis violation" races this year. Ford: Penske & SHR are the elites. Roush to some extent, FRM... no. Toyota: JGR and its puppet teams (LFR now, RPM starting in 2021*). It's an all-encompassing concept related to cost containment, new venues and a largely revolutionary car that has more single-supplier (read: spec) components than any that preceded it. "The car is meant to do three things: It's meant to lower costs, it's meant to have better racing, and then from a styling standpoint, it's meant to look more like a showroom car -- a souped-up showroom car but a showroom car nonetheless." Phelps is working as diligently as possible to get the current crop of owners, in addition to anyone who wishes to join them, to the next-generation car as soon as possible -- something that pandemic has certainly complicated from a financial standpoint. "All of this is to bridge to what this Next-Gen car will bring," Phelps said. "You won't need as many cars, they're likely going to cost less. It will be, in my opinion, a big win for the teams. "And it'll be a big win for the sport, frankly. "The goal is to have healthy race teams, right? Healthy race teams put on better racing, because they're competing. Then we want as many race cars to be competing for wins as we can. So do I think it's improving. Yes, I think it's improving." Spire and Marks represent the optimistic outlook Phelps has on the sport's future once it gets to the new car. "We are working with our teams and frankly have been working with our teams over the last four or five years to try to improve the business model," Phelps said. "We want healthy teams (and) if you look at where things are from like a team model standpoint, they're clearly improving. 42. possum posted: 09.02.2020 - 6:51 pm Rate this comment: (2) (1) @22 - actually it was NASCAR's fault. They could have said to Bahre and Smith "so you bought N Wilks, good for you. But we make the schedule and we're assigning those two dates to this other track". Instead they let Bahre and Smith take the dates, thus establishing both that a race date has value (it can be bought and sold) and that race dates belong to the track owners, not to NASCAR. Now, obviously they did that because it benefitted ISC, but it was a mistake that's hamstrung efforts to revise the schedule right to this day. 43. possum posted: 09.02.2020 - 6:51 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @41 - Is Phelps sure he's reading from the right press release? Darlington becomes the second track in NASCAR's modern era (1972-present) to host more than 2 races on the Cup schedule in the same season. Riverside was the first in 1981. The Top 2 in the standings, with the most wins of the 1981 season, were Darrell Waltrip and Bobby Allison. Allison won the first and third Riverside races while Waltrip won the second. Earlier this race, Darlington was added for the return of NASCAR after the COVID-19 pandemic, and hosted two shorter races. The Top 2 drivers in the standings entering this race, with the most wins of the 2020 season, are Kevin Harvick and Denny Hamlin. Harvick won the first Darlington race, Hamlin the second. Will we see the pattern and see a repeat winner in Harvick, or Hamlin? As far as all time (including 1949 through 1971), Daytona had hosted more than 3 points paying races for years (including 2020 but one race resulted in a road course which is counted as a different track in the record books). Plus means they would have gained positions in points with no stages, minus meaning they would have lost. 1. Kevin Harvick +0 2. Denny Hamlin +0 3. Brad Keselowski +0 4. Martin Truex, Jr. +0 5. Before the playoffs started, I thought was a chase of not him making it out of the first round due to how bad he is at Darlington and Richmond. What Ryan needs is some drivers in the chase to have misfortune. He does not have a top 10 at either track in cup. Ryan's best finish at Darlington is 13th place and that is at the 2019 Southern 500. His average finish at Darlington is 19 and never led a lap there. Ryan's best Finish at Richmond is 17th place and that was the last time the cup series went to the track. Ryan's average finish at Richmond is 25.5 and never led a lap there. This information shows Ryan needs to have a good finish at Bristol. Ryan Blaney has an average finish of 20.7 at Bristol, but has led 439 laps. That average finish is caused by a driver that has 4 top 10 finishes in 10 starts there. 85. As for the driver in the top 12, Austin Dillon would obviously be one to watch for in the battle for the next round, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Clint Bowyer will be one of the drivers to worry about on the bubble. Now he sits tied for 12th with a notably consistent Almirola on the other side of the battle for 12th. Why in the world Chase decided to run low after running high for several laps is beyond me. The high line was working for him and he lost so much pace and speed making that decision. He could have just continued to run that same line and probably kept True at bay. It's like he made a rookie mistake by doing that. Then he actually drove a little low to block Truex. They were both racing for the lead and I believe Truex could have waited a few more laps to make another good run at him. Truex made a mistake at Kentucky on the restart and then got overzealous going into 1. @157 I actually had some of the merchandise. I have their 1/64 cars in a package. Petty's '79 Monte Carlo and Earnhardt's '80 Monte Carlo... 7&7 As for the race, Austin Dillon was just two laps away from another crown jewel. Now that would have been something recovering from an early flat tire. Unbelievable that it almost worked out for him to win a third one. I think tonight was the best race he has ever run. Harvick had a top-10 car for about most of the race. They showed his in car camera about midway during the race and it was clear he was fighting his steering wheel where his car was so loose. Rodney Childers made calls twice to come down pit road early during green flag stops and they were both pivotal getting him track position out front in first or second place when two timely cautions came out. He didn't have the best car by no means, and had plenty of luck tonight to win because I don't think he could have held off Dillon if the race would have been 505 miles, but they did out team everyone and put himself in a position to win. This makes up for 2016 when Harvick had the best car all night, but his pit crew kept making mistakes and cost him the win giving it to Truex then. Harvick finished a disappointing second in that race. Harvick has won two Crown Jewels this year and both races he had some very fortunate circumstances go his way late in the race (Hamlin blowing a tire at Indy and Truex and Elliott getting together late this race). He has now passed Kyle Busch (at one time Harvick was down 56-45 to Busch in wins, unbelievable, most would have thought it would have went the other way) in wins and is behind his predecessor in the W column. 332. If you dont have room to do it you dont try it, Truex expecting Chase to back off for him is what annoys me, and thats what he said in the interview. No racer is gonna back off for anyone in the last 20 laps of a race, Truex has to realize this and accept it. 350. Let's not act like Harvick is slower than most and just out schemes everyone." 98% of the time??? HMS has won four races this year. Harvick was not faster than them in any of those races. The 9, 24, and 88 at times was faster than the 4 last night. Chase was faster than him at the 600. The 9 was faster than the 4 at Bristol. The 9 was better than him at Homestead. Tbh, Chase should probably have 5-6 wins this year and he has been snake bitten by cautions, by pit decisions, or some costly circumstances on the race track. And let's not forget the midweek Darlington race. If not for being taken out by Busch and the rain the 9 and 4 may have had an epic duel. So 98% is a major exaggeration. That's a big reach. Harvick has had them on big tracks like Indy, Michigan, and he had them at Dover for sure, but it's been closer to 50/50. At several races the 4 team has out schemed teams to get top-5's. Chase should have had two Crown Jewels this year. Although the 19 team has just one win, last night should have been their ninth straight top 4 finish. They're not lacking speed. I suggest you get in the trenches of things a little more instead of just looking at what's on paper. 351. So yeah, Harvick has been much faster. 352. Jimmysjohnson posted: 09.07.2020 - 10:47 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) ,@337 correction Waltrip-Hammond 353. Sure , Elliott is on his way to that dominant tier group , but he's not quite there yet. He's close but not there. Johnson has obviously seen his better days for awhile now , and Bowman and Byron are stil 2-3 tiers below a Harvick imo. 354. "But lets face it, he is faster than HMS 98% of the time, and really, it's just Hamlin from JGR this year, even the 18 doesn't seem to have the speed. So you basically made my point by tallying ALL of HMS laps led like he mentioned and obviously it's not 98% of the time. Against HMS Harvick has more wins but doesn't have as many laps led and I already conceded where Harvick was best at Dover 2, Michigan 1 & 2, Indy, and of course Atlanta is Harvick's middle name (624 of his 1149 laps led came from those races this year), but Elliott has blown some opportunities and had some unfortunate incidents that happened keeping him from wins. The late caution and pit call at Charlotte was brutal. Logano holding him up at Homestead was unfortunate. Kyle taking him out at Darlington was disappointing. The late restart at Bristol sucked. So yeah, sometimes laps led can be a pretty good measuring stick, but it can also be deceiving in that several races HMS has been better than Harvick, however, the 11, 19, 2 and 22 have been better than them and they got the laps led for certain races (Homestead, Bristol, Martinsville). Also, where Chase was dominant at such as the 2nd Charlotte race (He led 28 out of 208) and the Daytona Road Course (led 34 out of 65) there were a lot less laps in the race. Also, Harvick has eight wins with 1149 laps led compared to his 2018 year with eight wins and 1990 laps led. So they have been out scheming teams and even getting top 5's such as at Kansas, Kentucky, and Loudon. He has two wins from out scheming everyone (Pocono and Darlington 3) and has a win due to Hamlin having a flat at Indy late in the race. Give the team and Harvick credit, they have put themselves in position to get lucky all year if something in front (or behind) of them happens. Harvick being my favorite driver since he took over for Dale, Sr. I'm thrilled for him and love it that the Southern 500 fell in his lap this year after the 2016 race was heart breaking as a fan. It was as mad as I had ever been at his pit crew. Harvick has been slightly better, but not as a whole and definitely not 98% of the time, lol. "But lets face it, he is faster than HMS 98% of the time, and really, it's just Hamlin from JGR this year, even the 18 doesn't seem to have the speed. Let's not act like Harvick is slower than most and just out schemes everyone." Hamlin has six wins to Truex's one, however, Hamlin only has 28 more laps led than Truex at the moment. Again, laps led can be deceiving and/or the win column as well. And Truex was well on his way to his ninth straight top-4 finish until he dive bombed Elliott Sunday night or a slide job gone bad, I think Elliott could have put an Earnhardt crossover on him if he wanted to get back by him. The option was there. The trenches... 359. Canadianfan posted: 09.10.2020 - 12:21 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) From ShowBuzzDaily: Sunday's race had 2.434 million viewers on NBCSN. Fact is, Harvick is faster than anyone at HMS on a consistent basis. Whether it's talent level or the car itself (which the latter is most likely), those are the facts. IF you want to argue that it's closer to 85% of the time, and not really see my 98% of the time as a bit of a number to make a point, that is cool too. But don't sit here and say taht Harvick and his team isn't faster than the competition more times than not (with the exception perhaps Hamlin), and he is having Prime Jimmie Johnson type luck right now to boot. 361.
