This is the only race in this round of Playoffs (others being the Charlotte ROVAL and Talladega) without being labeled a "wildcard" or the unknown. This could very well be the most important race to determine everyone's fate. The fight for the Top 8 in standings begins now; Entering the race Austin Dillon and Aric Almirola are tied for the 8th position, with Dillon getting the tiebreaker advantage. Kyle Busch and Clint Bowyer are below the cutoff by 1 point. Kurt Busch behind by 4 points. Coming fresh off his last week's win, Kevin Harvick is on the road to achieve a milestone of win number 10 of the 2020 season. It is the first time since 2008 that a driver won 9 races in a single season (Carl Edwards), but the first time since 2007 (Jimmie Johnson) that they have won 9 races and has a shot at win #10 following that win (Edwards won the season finale race in 2008, so he never had an opportunity to win again after his 9th win that season). Will this be the weekend for Kevin Harvick to win for the 10th time of 2020? He already has won twice in the three races from the previous round of the Playoffs. 5. We've heard Cindric and Briscoe are staying in Xfinity next year, and Matt is likely to re-sign. But in 12 months, we're likely in the same situation. That being said, Brandon Jones to the 96 would be interesting, I'd say they'll get more support from Toyota. I hate that Cindric and Briscoe may stay in Xfinity next year, I think that they are both ready for Cup but there may just not be enough rides open 7. MBenoit posted: 09.22.2020 - 3:18 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) I'm kinda bummed all news stories about Jordan's deal are totally glossing over the fact we've had an African-American majority car owner compete full-time since Wendell Scott. Sam Belnavis was majority owner of Belcar Racing with Todd Bodine in 2003. Travis Carter was minority owner. Not to diminish what Wendell went through, but all stories saying NASCAR hasn't had a black majority owner since Scott are technically wrong. 8. Gopher88 posted: 09.22.2020 - 5:06 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Yesterday a trio of large news stories broke. In the morning Ross Chastain announced he would be taking over the reins of Chip Ganassi's #42 in 2020. The move has been anticipated for a few years now, but some big names without rides (Wallace, Jones, Suarez, Dillon, Larson, Briscoe, etc.) had tempered expectations. Next a large announcement regarding schedules came out. In 2021 Texas Motor Speedway will lose one of their points-paying races, instead having a second event for All-Star weekend, in which they will become just the fourth track ever to host the All-Star Race, and third different in three years. The other large portion of the announcement has the Cup Series going to Circuit of the Americas in Austin, TX for a race next year, a track at which Tony Stewart tested a Ford a year or so ago. Finally, late last evening, Denny Hamlin announced that he and Michael Jordan were forming a single-car Cup operation. Their driver? Bubba Wallace. Sponsors, manufacturer, number, and other personnel are TBA, but it is highly likely they become a Toyota team. The Germain Racing charter was sold to the team and as a result Bob Germain announced he will be leaving NASCAR after the end of this season. 13. Corey posted: 09.22.2020 - 5:43 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @6 Cindric and Briscoe might be in the same boat as Gragson. They don't want to come to Cup next year only for a new car to debut the year after. As it stands now, we may not have any rookie of the year candidates for 2021. With 79 Cup starts, Chastain is certainly ineligible like Bayne was when he went full time Cup racing. The only other option I see is if Justin Haley ends up going full time with Spire. 14. It would mix things up a lot more while still keeping the backmarkers at the back and out of harm's way for the start. To be clear, I'm only suggesting that for the remainder of this season. Qualifying definitely needs to return in the future, and there's no legitimate reason why it shouldn't. 21. BK used to be really good at Vegas and contended for wins almost annually when they came here, even as recently as last year. Harvick and Hamlin are good picks for almost any race this year because they've had the championship duel amongst themselves all year, and Logano is a threat mainly because he's with Penske who always seem to bring their best to Vegas, in 2019 they finished 1-2 with a quite intense final lap between the teammates. Also MTJ. Hasn't done nearly as well this year as in years past at any track besides his Martinsville domination and win, but I still think there's a chance for them to turn it around and get better during the playoffs. That's what they did when they won in 2017. They won in every round except the Round of 8, gaining 4 more wins on an already impressive total. 24. It's a long time coming, and I know it really means a lot to him to win at Vegas. I know people will say it's a fluke because even though he DID have a good car it wasn't a winning car until that caution during pit stops came out exactly at the right time for him. I'm also happy to see DiBendetto get to the front for the same reason and actually be able to stay there. Both #21 and #1 had top 10 cars tonight regardless of circumstances. Elliott was the most screwed car on the track looking at where he finished compared to where he ran the whole damn night otherwise, but if you need to know who has the absolute worst luck pretty much every week I nominate his teammate the #24. Erik Jones got another bad break too, so he's the perfect driver to move over to #48. His rotten luck will fit right in. But the guy who really might have won had those pit stops not been interrupted was the #88. Who could imagine Chevys actually running well here, but they did and Bowman was the best of them late in the race, even better than Chase. 187. He won the spring race last year and came back from a spin to finish 8th in the fall. He seems to be a pretty good Superspeedway racer. As long as he can avoid the big one, he'll be fine. That's if he can avoid it. Chase has also been known to come through in the clutch, remember Kansas last year? It took 2 overtimes and Keselowski choking but he came through and advanced. I'm more worried about the round of 8 if he makes it, and even though I'm worried now, I still have confidence that he'll pull through. 188. Okay. I personally am neutral on him, however he still isn't that amazing as everyone makes him out to be. DiBenedetto always exceeded expectations over the last several years in underfunded equipment. He had a breakout season last year in the #95, nearly getting their first win. And he started this season off strong. But once it became questionable as to whether or not he'd make the playoffs, he had a bad stretch of races (a 12-race stretch with 0 top 5s and only 3 finishes better than 15th)--even at tracks like Bristol and the Daytona Road Course where you'd expect him to run well. Then as soon as he's eliminated from the playoffs, he contends for the win and finishes 2nd. In fairness, it's the first time in his career that he's ever been in this type of situation, with such high expectations. Maybe the pressure did get to him a bit. Hopefully he'll get a chance to stay in the #21 next year and he'll do better under pressure the next time around. Then again, there are some drivers who perform better when the expectations are low. Let's hope he doesn't fall into that category. Time will tell. 208. As part of that research, I came to realize that the schedule has not changed significantly since the 1972-1974 period. In fact, nearly half the races on the schedule were held at roughly the same time of year from 1974 through at least 2018. So we're actually watching the first mass schedule change in nearly 50 years. I also think they should bring back a few more short tracks on the schedule. Throw in a dirt race or two as well. 219.
