Here is a look at the 12 playoff drivers and their finishes in the 2
previous races at the Charlotte Roval.

Already clinched a spot in the round of 8:
12th 19th Denny Hamlin
5th 20th Kurt Busch
9th 3rd Kevin Harvick

Likely to make it into the round of 8:
6th 1st Chase Elliott
31st 5th Brad Keselowski

In decent shape to make the round of 8 as long as they run well at the
Roval:
14th 7th Martin Truex Jr.
4th 2nd Alex Bowman
10th 10th Joey Logano

Probably need to win at the Roval in order to make the round of 8
(unless someone in the group above has a really bad race):

Kyle Busch and Austin Dillon are entering this race 21 points behind
Joey Logano for the cutoff line to advance into the next round of
Playoffs. Kurt Busch, already with a win at Las Vegas earlier in the
round, despite being behind brother Busch and Dillon is already advanced
while Clint Bowyer (-38) and Aric Almirola (-48) are the others in
jeopardy of being eliminated from the championship hunt.

Kyle Busch is looking to fail to make the Final Four for the first time
since 2014, when the elimination Playoffs first began. It would only be
the second time he has failed ended a 5 year streak of being part of the
Final Four. Kyle Busch remains winless in 2020, perhaps could be for the
first time of his career in full season competition, he has yet to
finish a race at the Charlotte ROVAL as he had a pair of DNF's in the
inaugural 2018 and 2019 races. He also had a DNF in the Daytona road
course event as well, providing that he most certainly doesn't have a
good track record at the oval tracks turned infield layout. Odds are
against him.

I wouldn't count Kyle out entirely just yet, though. His 4 road course
wins are tied for most of all active drivers (with Chase Elliott &
Martin Truex, Jr.) and tied for 10th all-time. Maybe this is the time
his luck turns around at the Roval. It also helps him that he doesn't
need to win to advance, because it's easier to score stage points on
road courses due to the split strategy that lots of teams usually take
(pitting before the stage end because they won't lose a lap.) If he
could score 10-15 stage points, he should be sitting in a pretty good
place. He ran as high as 2nd in 2018 and 4th in 2019 before having
issues, and he's a good road racer who has shown an ability to win when
he needs to. I don't know if it's likely that he'll advance, but he's
definitely got the best shot of the guys currently 9th-12th.

@10 Harvick is not locked in. He's only 47 points above Logano. It is
possible for one of the bottom four to win and the other 5 guys to pass
him points. I'd have him in the likely to advanced list.

Based off the last two years, this race should again be interesting. At
this point most of the drivers should know what they're getting into,
but the lack of practice and potential rain could throw this back into
the madness category. I'm excited.

Mentioned this on the Talladega page, but the only two full-time points
drivers to not score top tens this year are Daniel Suarez and Quin Houff
(and Houff was close last week). Suarez may have a chance this week,
especially if rain comes.

First Roval race with <40 cars.

@13 - You're right about Harvick; thanks for the correction. I remember
seeing somewhere that Harvick was locked in on points and I just went
with it without realizing that it was wrong.

Still, it is extremely unlikely that all 3 of these things happen:
someone 9th-12th wins AND both Logano and Bowman have 46+ point totals
AND Harvick has a terrible race.

#13 Yes, only Kurt Busch (won at Las Vegas) and Denny Hamlin (won at
Talladega) are currently locked in. Kevin Harvick cannot fail based on
points, only if he dropped to the bubble and a winner of
Busch/Almirola/Bowyer/Dillon happen.

Regardless, should Joey Logano or Alex Bowman fail to score at least 7-8
stage points in either stages, then Harvick is good to go to advance.
Finishing positions can only go as high as 40 points. I'd expect Harvick
to go hard for stage points in Round 1 & Round 2 and then it's all hands
on deck for the win.

#17 It's not even just Logano and Bowman.

Chase Elliott would have to score 25 points, Keselowski 28 and Martin
Truex, Jr 34 points over Harvick to surpass him. It isn't just Logano
and Bowman, they could excel and pass Harvick but there are still three
drivers inbetween.

@21 this is the 4th time they've done that to Reed this season. However,
it's hard to argue against Poole...in 14 races that both drivers have
started this year, Poole has beaten Sorenson 12 times, and has an
average finish of 29.9 vs. Sorenson's 33.1.

Obviously this is a race Chase can win, he seems to be the best road guy
right now. But for me, I will be just happy to advance. I know he will
likely have to win in the round of 8 to get to Phoenix, but gotta get
there first. Don't get me wrong, winning would be great and he needs all
the playoff points he can get, but just advance. Anything can happen on
road courses.

The rest of the schedule shapes up well for Chase.

Charlotte: 1 win, 35 laps led, 3.5 avg. finish
Kansas: 1 win, 97 laps led, 11.6 avg. finish
Texas: 0 wins, 44 laps led, 11.1 avg. finish
Martinsville: 0 wins, 193 laps led, 15.9 avg. finish
Phoenix: 0 wins, 249 laps led, 13.0 avg. finish

He's good enough at the Roval that he definitely should advance, barring
any unforeseen circumstances. He's pretty strong at all the tracks in
the round of 8. Though he's only won at Kansas, he's come close at both
Texas & Martinsville. Remember, it is also possible to point your way
into the final 4, so he could do that if he doesn't win. Phoenix has
been the site of several near-misses for him, and he could forget about
those with a win and championship this year. He led the most laps there
in the spring, and should be a strong contender when they return.

If I had to bet, Kyle Busch(Surprises me he's in this bad of shape),
Austin Dillon, Clint Bowyer, and Aric Almirola all get eliminated.

That'll leave Kurt Busch, Chase Elliott, Denny Hamlin, Martin Truex Jr.,
Kevin Harvick, Joey Logano, Brad Keselowski, and Alex Bowman left.

From here, I see a Kansas victory for Hamlin, a Harvick texas win, and a
Truex Martinsville win, which will set the final round with Chase
Elliott also involved.

Phoenix is going to be an easy win for Harvick out of these 4 because of
his astonishing 9 cup victories there. A 10th is soon to come.

Predicting the champion is like picking the lottery: Getting a win is
rare, and getting the full jackpot is damn near impossible. It's just a
guess from what I've seen so far in 2020.

There's no evidence to support that. If you've been watching the races,
Harvick hasn't won there since the track was reconfigured in 2018. Your
projected final 4 (since 2018):

Harvick: 0 wins, 140 laps led
Hamlin: 1 win, 150 laps led
Truex: 0 wins, 19 laps led
Elliott: 0 wins, 109 laps led

Hamlin & Elliott have both been very good at Phoenix since it was
reconfigured. Truex has never been very good at Phoenix (0 wins, 4 top
5s, 11 top 10s, 123 laps led, 16.1 avg. finish in 29 races). I agree
that he's got no shot at the title (unless the final 4 is somehow guys
like him, Kurt Busch, Austin Dillon & Aric Almirola or something.)

configuration, back to back top 5's, 2 front row starts, and led 67 laps

Harvick has not been spectacular (still good, just not spectacular) at
Phoenix over the last 4 years. He had a streak from spring 2014 through
spring 2016 where he dominated 5 straight races and won 4 of them.

In the last 8 races, Harvick has only led in 3 of them and only won
once. He has finished in the 4th-6th place range a lot.

Kyle Busch has actually taken over as the most dominant driver at
Phoenix over the last few years.

@32 The #14, #21, and #41 are really just giant question marks right
now. None of those teams have officially said the current driver is out
and it's more than likely that a replacement is already in the works
should they switch. I don't consider those seats open.

I believe the biggest thing holding up Bowyer and Dibendetto are whether
their teams want to bring up Briscoe and Cindric or leave them in
Xfinity for another season. Given the new car is coming in 2022, they
might just go that route.

I doubt Custer is going anywhere. The dude won a race this year and made
the playoffs.

I'd be 99.9% sure Custer is staying where he is, but he was only in the
playoffs because of that 1 win, and he was a 1st round exit. Based on
season long points not using the playoffs, the highest he's been this

Also as @33 pointed out, the new car coming in 2022 could keep Briscoe &
Cindric in Xfinity another year. That could be Kyle Larson's ticket to a
2021 Cup ride with SHR, take the 14, then Almirola is released after
2021 for Briscoe (don't think Havrick will retire & can't see Custer
being let go)

I have a hard time believing that Briscoe & Cindric will happily stay in
xfinity after the years they've had. Maybe whichever one doesn't win the
championship will be back in xfinity in 2021, the other will be in a
Front Row ride

Also, not sure how Newman will all of the sudden get that good of a
finish considering the 6 car has been absolute trash all year. Not
because of Newman, just because the car and team sucks. The 17 isn't

@36 Sometimes the timing of things just plain stinks. Briscoe has 2.5
years in Xfinity and Cindric has 3. Had the new car been debuting next
season, I think both would have Cup rides lined up. Now it got pushed
back a year. Also sponsors are probably harder to come by. A lot of that
is dictated by the schedule and since that just got released, the teams
are just now trying to secure funding. That might be part of the reason
why neither guy's future has been decided and maybe the hold up for
DiBenedetto and the Wood Brothers as well.

Briscoe even had trouble finding sponsorship before COVID, so that's
very possible.

I don't get the thing about the Gen-7 car, though. Nobody said that
Custer, Reddick or Bell should wait until 2021 last year. Briscoe &
Cindric are performing similarly well, so they're ready too.

@41 I think the thing with the next gen car and Briscoe and Cindric is
the fact that if they move up to cup in 2021, they would have to learn a
car that isn't going to be around for more than that one year, so
logically, it may make more sense to keep them in xfinity for 2021 so
they don't have to learn a new car back to back years (2021, 2022)
despite the potential that they may be ready for cup.

From Bob Pockrass:

Another quirk to charter leasing arrangements. The original charter
agreement from 2016-2020 allowed a charter to be leased for one season.
Now 2021-2024 deal allows a charter to be leased for another year. So
everything resets starting in 2021; all charters can be leased again.

Hey good news NBC Sports has said the NBC NASCAR team will call races
from track beginning at Charlotte and then Travel for remainder of the
season. Fantastic news I've been waiting for that for 8 months!!! Hey
Fox what are you gonna do?? Not many races for trucks will you get your

If there is one thing thats good news NASCAR Ratings while not great
like everyone else and as I learned with the NASCAR Weekly Podcast they
are beating the NBA! Every time I see them talk ratings, I love them
saying we beat NBA or someone, I mean like with NHL more folks would
rather watch NASCAR But say no to both NBA Finals and The Stanley Cup
Finals, and guess what both may have in common with each other least

The reason I watch the race, but with MRN or PRN instead of the TV
broadcast, is because the radio teams are at the track. hopefully the TV
guys being at the track will help the broadcast, because they really had
no clue what was happening. So much stuff has been missed that you only
know about because the radio guys are at the track.

That's cool that NASCAR beat the NBA, too. Sure, these Finals weren't
exactly the most captivating in terms of the on-court play (for the most
part), but it's still the NBA. Maybe this is a good sign for NASCAR.
They've got to be hoping they continue to pull in good ratings until
they sign their next TV deal, whatever that looks like. NBC reported
that their ratings are up 1% from last year. Any increase is good,
especially when you consider that we spent years with what seemed like
10% decreases every season.

60. Part of why I think NASCAR's ratings haven't been hurt as badly as
the big 5 leagues (MLB, NFL, NHL, NBA, MLS) in the U.S. is that after
the noose incident NASCAR significantly toned down the social justice
messaging. The big 5 leagues haven't figured that out, and it's part of
what's hurting their ratings--along with people figuring out while
sports were shutdown that they could live without sports.

The more NASCAR gets involved in the popular politics of the day, the
more the sport will decline. But, it will get the attention of fake
people who pretend that they care, so people will say "we got new fans",

The words "torrential downpour" are in the forecast for Sunday. Assuming
it doesn't get so bad that the race is stopped, the conditions are
perfect for underdogs and not so great for favorites *cough Chase

Hate to tell you guys, but politics have been in sports and
entertainment forever. It may be more prevalent now, but this is nothing
new. Just now, more people tend to get upset when they see something
they don't like. If drivers can go to political rallies, other drivers
should be able to voice their opinion as well. It should go both ways.

@74 I'm not entirely warm to the idea of a Bristol dirt race. And
neither were the two podcasts I listen too, "Door, Bumper, Clear" and
the "Dale Jr Download".

Some of that is going to depend on what type of event they are going to
run. One positive they see, is that we could find a dirt track ace buy a
car and run the event much like some do for Eldora.

They problem is trying to stick 36-40 cars on there at once. The slower
traffic can already be a problem on the concrete and those cars run
closer on the track. Put that same amount on a dirt track and we could
be looking at a caution fest.

NASCAR has to a certain extent allowed it to go both ways.


They allowed Bubba to run his BLM scheme and have banned the confederate
flag. But, they have also allowed the Mike Harmon cars to their "Back
the Blue" slogans and for Go Fas and MBM to run Trump Campaign Paint
schemes.

Charlotte Motor Speedway had some temporary lights for the infield put
in for the IMSA race tonight and turned them on for the Xfinity race.
Track will try to bring in more lights for the infield for the Cup race
in case it goes long.

The Xfinity series race was rained so heavily that it put on such a
chaotic show. So many spins due to the track being wet, and watching
certain drivers (such as Chase Briscoe) keep the car from spinning and
being loose on a straightaway is crazy.

I really hope Mother Nature decides to rain as much as it did in Cup on
Sunday (minus the red flag it). It'll be interesting to see how the
superstar drivers in Chase Elliott, Kyle Busch, Brad Keselowski and more
handle wet conditions.

Normally Chase Elliott would be the biggest stone cold lock of the
century to win today. I would put money on him to win this race today
over any NFL, NBA Finals, or MLB playoff game today (hard to believe
this much professional sports is going on at this time of the year, who
would have ever thunk it?). However, with rain in the forecast, it's
hard to say. Perhaps one still should.

People seem to forget that Chase has 3 points wins not on Road Courses
or SuperSpeedways, (of which he only has 1). Charlotte, Kansas and Dover.

And AJ has a non road course win came at Atlanta. He's never won at

This is the first year since 2014 that Kyle Busch won't be in the Final

Pending any inspection failures, Kevin Harvick's 11th place finish ends
the opportunity for Harvick to tie Jeff Gordon's modern era 30th Top 10
(from 2007) in a single season. With four races to go, and only 25 Top
10's at this point, he can only reach 29 Top 10's now.

On the bright side, he clinches having the most Top 10's of 2020. Brad
Keselowski and Martin Truex, Jr are next in line of having the highest,

When did Charlotte oval become a superspeedway? Kansas? Dover? Dale Sr.
only own at six tracks for the most part and had a lot of RP wins. No
one is using that to knock him down several pegs on the all time list.

You all are making this stuff up in your head. There isn't anyone saying
road courses mean everything. I am sure Chase Elliott himself would tell
you he would like to get better at 1.5 mile ovals. Unfortunately driver
skill isn't as important there (more important than 'Tona and 'Dega tho)
as short tracks and road courses. You have to be skilled to be a road
course racer period. Anyone that races from Kyle Busch to Kevin Harvick
will tell you that. So yeah, for all that choking BS we listened to, 9
wins later we are going to celebrate he is one of the most skilled
drivers in Nascar, the best young driver to come into the sport since
Larson, and already a top 10 Nascar driver on the current roster. You
can keep hating, we will just keep drinking your tears.

Like I said in another post Dale Sr. won most of his races at six
tracks. Also won a lot of RP races. People aren't using this same logic
against him. You win what you win and where you win. There isn't any
driver trying to hand back wins because he won on a road course or a
superspeedway.

unbearable. Fact is, Chase is just another Dale Jr, only difference is
their dominance on road courses and plate tracks. And yes, I remember a
lot of fans wanting more races at Daytona and Talladega whenever Dale Jr

If Chase seems to win disproportionately at road course and plate
tracks, could it be because from "New Camaro" 2018 through the present
that Chevys are way, way down in performance at the regular ovals &
short tracks which make up a very high percentage of the schedule?

So OF COURSE if Chase (or any Chevy driver) is going to win a race, it
would have to be at the types of tracks where Chase has in fact succeeded.

2018: Chevy gets 2 wins all year on regular tracks (4 wins in 36 races
overall), both by Chase Elliott.

2019: Chevy moves all the way up to 7 wins in 36 races, 3 of them on
regular tracks.

2020: 7 wins in 32 races so far for the Bowties, 4 of them on regular
tracks and 2 of those before NASCAR cracked down on the chassis-related
rules which the Chevy teams (mainly Hendrick) weren't breaking.

Everyone is competing against another at the same venue. Some drivers
are better at one tracks than another. Don't see the hate toward Harvick
for dominating Phoenix or Busch at Bristol while they are spreading
evenly at other tracks.

Maybe we should just race at Pocono and Phoenix from now here to give
Denny Hamlin all those free wins. Maybe that'll stop the hating (lol)

Chase has won at Watkins Glen, Kansas, Dover, Talladega, Watkins Glen,
Roval, Charlotte, Daytona road course, and Roval. Kansas, Dover, and
Charlotte oval are a third of his wins and they are all on ovals. He
also out dueled Hamlin, Busch, and Truex among those many wins. Also
next season road courses are going to mean even more. So much owners
will have to start taking road course skills into consideration when
hiring drivers. At this point I am have to assume you are young and lack
the proper knowledge to make a proper assessment on Chase's success.
Like I said Dale Sr. won at six tracks mainly and a lot of RP races and
zero people are making this argument against him because it is a dumb
argument that lacks logic. I'll take any bet you want to when Elliott
retires he will have destroyed everything AJ has done in the sport and I
like the Dinger. The hate is unreal.

I can't believe people are arguing that Chase isn't good enough because
he only wins at road courses as if they aren't the best show case of a
driver's overall talent (those and short tracks)

A win at the Roval is way more impressive than a win at kansas or Texas

Chase Elliott haters will do everything in their power to try and
discredit everything he has done in his short career thus far. The truth
is, he is such a good driver that literally the only ammunition the
haters have at this point is that he "only wins on road courses". As if
that is supposed be to be a negative thing lol. All I can say is once
Hendrick and Chevrolet finally get their short track and 1.5 mile cars
figured out and more competitive, watch out, Chase will be unstoppable.

Interestingly, Johnson lost a position to 18th in the standings to Erik
Jones. He now sits 18th. In 2019 he lost to Daniel Suarez for the 17th
position (best position of all non-Playoffs drivers).

Granted I know many will say it won't hurt Johnson's legacy, but the way
his career is ending is rather disappointing and forgetful. It's not
like he's going out on top like Jeff Gordon did in 2015 or Carl Edwards
in 2016, but rather going out in a lower standards.

This is the last I will state anything about it. Dale Junior was good at
Daytona and Talladega. Every other race car driver had the opportunity
to get their equipment better and challenge Junior. Same when Dale Sr.
dominated every plate race not called the Daytona 500. Every other racer
had an opportunity to get their plate car ready to dethrone Sr. It kills
me people try to find asinine reasons to discredit Chase because he is
more popular than their driver and young girls are into him. That's the
dumbest logic I have ever heard. If you want to be a fan of a sport, you
should be a better fan than that. I couldn't imagine me making the
reverse statement about a driver's success on 1.5 mile ovals though a
lot of those races come down to track position and many times the
best/fastest car doesn't win. Hell, Hamlin and Harvick both have stole a
few races late, much the same way a lot of those races are won.

Sector, in those cases you have to look back at other drivers and other
sports. Even Dale Sr. had a winless streak. Waltrip probably had one of
the most miserable exits from the sport. Stayed in the game way too
long. It doesn't seem like it has hurt his status. Tom Brady is already
showing he isn't going to be the same QB in Tamapa Bay he has been most
of his career...is that going to ruin his legacy? Jeter trailed off in
baseball before he left...does that ruin his legacy? The answer is no.
Jimmie Johnson has the accolades he needs to be solid in Nascar's top 5
for decades to come.

I do find it very interesting that he has really not been as solid since
he was knocked out of the playoffs. I really thought he would get that
win, and maybe he will, but he hasn't been quite as strong lately as he
was prior to his exit.

Still, it would've been great to see him go out with full confidence

Jimmie's rapid descent into the mid pack sort of looks like the end of
DJ on paper. Final 3 points seasons with few wins (0 for Jimmie, 1 for

I know Gray Gaulding finished 26th, but that doesn't really show how
competitive he was today. He was in the top 15 for most of the race and
even drove all the way up to the top 10 at one point. And he's driving
for Rick Ware! That was the drive of the year if you ask me. It was by
far the most competitive race a Rick Ware has ever ran in cup and anyone
who runs that competitively in a Rick Ware crap box deserves huge props.

@316 - Comparing him to Jeff Gordon is fair, but comparing him to Carl
Edwards is not. Edwards chose to unexpectedly retire at the peak of his
career, after 12 full-time seasons. If Johnson had suddenly retired
after winning the 2013 championship, that would have been similar to
Edwards' retirement.

I wonder if Johnson may already be focused on his future IndyCar plans
and if his NASCAR performance has dropped off as a result.

Looking at the Non-playoff standings after this race...

3rd-6th are really intense.

Martin Truex, Jr has 1088 points, 4 ahead of Joey Logano (1084), 5 of
Chase Elliott (1083) and 6 of Brad Keselowski (1082). Granted they are
the best drivers of 2020 not including Harvick and Hamlin, but dang they
are head to head with one another. I'm more curious as to who will fail
to finish Top 5 at season's end.

for Chase personally, I think he's had a very easy journey in top level
equipment, but I don't deny he's not good. It's basically how I feel

Wins are wins wherever they come. Clearly Chase brings a full can of
whoop arse to the road course races. I like listening to the other
drivers talk about how the 9 runs - pretty much all said Chase was WAY
faster and they don't know how he does it. The only that said he thought
he was close was Truex - and he said it was really just one part of the
track they are getting beat on. I think Chase's cars are good (and
obviously tuned for what Chase likes) but most of it is the dude turning
the wheel. He has always been fast at road courses his entire NASCAR
career at all levels - 1st win was a road course in Trucks and Cup.
Looking ahead - Road America is a place I expect Chase to be really
good. In ARCA he was battling Andrew Ranger for the win and had an
incident late that cost them both the win (battling for the lead). Chase
could have won both Xfinity races he ran there. One was a rain race and
he got out dualed on old wet tires on a late restart. Secord race he was
the class of the field - but getting pushed off track on a re-start and
a terrible pit call cost him the win.

He has been good his whole career - he is getting better and team knows
how to give him a car that works for him. He is so smooth on the in car
camera is a little weird - Sunday drive.

@331 Stewart and Johnson had similar career trajectories as far as the
on track performance goes when it comes to the end. Both of them won
their final championship where even their performance that season was
questioned despite winning 5 races. Both had a noticeable drop in
performance after that with few victories.

There off track history, couldn't be more different.

And the 7 year streak of no drivers winning a race in each round of the
playoffs continues. Truex won in 3 of the 4 rounds in 2017, and there
have been a few others to get 3, but none have done 4/4.

@330 - Tony Stewart would be a good comparison to Jimmie Johnson. I also
think Rusty Wallace's last 3 or 4 seasons were very similar to
Johnson's. Rusty did get 1 win in his next-to-last season, but when you

#333 I personally enjoy creating a personal "career stats" on Microsoft
Excel for racing, much related to how Racing-Reference organizes
driver's stats. What Chase Elliott is doing on these road courses is
very identical to the stats I have listed for my fantasy stats there
across all NASCAR series (minus the open wheel and sportscar stats).

The question I should be asking myself is why am I not a Chase Elliott
fan? I don't know how to answer that.

That is probably why I appreciated Jeff Gordon so much was because of
his road course dominance. I greatly appreciate road course successes
(and I like to throw in Darlington into the mix because it's Darlington).

For the Final 4 I see Kevin Harvick and Denny Hamlin making it easily.
On the other end, Alex Bowman and Kurt Busch are going to be longshots
and will need wins to get in.

The last two spots are going to be a real dog fight between Joey Logano,
Brad Keselowski, Chase Elliott, and Martin Truex Jr.

Of the final 8, they all have atleast 1 victory and the entire group
accounts for 28 of the 32 race wins.

Chase dominating road courses is something that I didn't expect. I
mostly expected him to be dominate on short tracks because that's where
he cut his teeth, but I can see where he got his road racing talents
from. In most Xfinity and Truck races at Mosport, Road America or
Watkins Glen, he was usually in the mix.

I never remember Bill Elliott being a good road racer, I mainly remember
his talents at the superspeedways and is true speed at Daytona and
Talladega before restrictor plates.

Yeah, I'm equally surprised at how good Chase has been on road courses.
In the lower series, he had 11 starts, 2 wins, 9 top 5s, 11 top 10s &
110 laps led on road courses. Not shabby by any means (actually, pretty
darn good) but nobody could've expected him to move UP a level and have
5 wins, 6 top 5s, 8 top 10s & 240 road course laps led in his first 12
starts.

As for Bill, he actually won his first race on a road course (just like
Chase.) However, that proved to be his only road course win. Outside of
that Riverside win, he had just 9 top 5s, 15 top 10s & 73 laps led in 44
road course starts.

Sure... Why have they not added any more when Gordon was good at them
though? And why weren't there any more plate races when Junior was
unbeatable?

Maybe the truth is that racing is often quite good on road courses, it's
less affected by weather and fans have warmed up to it. But that's just
a wild thought, it's definitely only done to please the fans of one
particular driver.

After last week's nonsense to penalize drivers at end of the race.
Didn't watching today's race feel like the sports integrity was gone? I
mean, seeing Matty D race his heart early out for stage points while
knowing he should have least 20 more points for finishing 2nd instead of
20th something from last week. And while Denny Hamlin can spin off the
track 3 or 4 times, as many times as he likes when he clearly drove
below the yellow line last week with no regards to the rule knowing
these circumstances are not accurate. Today felt fake!!!

The tracks he won at the most are arguably the most challenging for one
thing. Darlington, Atlanta, and Bristol are "drivers" tracks, and of
course he was on another planet compared to other drivers when it came
to restrictor plate racing. He won six races and had seven runner-ups at
Martinsville (another driver's track). And he was unreal at N.
Wilkesboro (even as a rookie) with a career 6.2 avg finish along with
five wins and six runner-ups and if not for the '89 last lap crash it
would have been better. Talladega is hard to win at as well depending on
how you look at it. His numbers would have been higher at them if he
would have ever had Yates or Hendrick HP. Even before restrictor plate
racing he was very solid at Daytona and Talladega (He was awesome at
them in 1980, '84 and '86). Also, there are more tracks/races on the
circuit than there are now.

I think @301 mentioned too how Earnhardt and Johnson weren't great at
road courses, but they sure weren't bad. Earnhardt had 20 starts at
Riverside and had 14 top 10's and 13 top 5's with three engines blown
and an average finish of 10.7, he had 15 starts at the Glen with eight
top 10's and in 1993 got involved in a late crash not of his doing
ruining his chances at 2nd or even winning and at Sonoma he had 12
starts with nine top 10's and only finishing worse than 12th once with
an avg. finish of 8.6 (Jeff Gordon won there five times and his avg.
finish is barely ahead of Dale's at 8.3). He won there once in 1995 and
had the field covered in 1993 if not for a couple of lapped cars ruining
his chances at winning. After his front bumper being damaged he came
from 36th to 6th in the last 20 laps of the race. Unfortunately
Earnhardt is considered avg. as a road racer, but the fact of the matter
is he was very underrated as a road racer. You have to dig and get in
the trenches of it to realize it.

He dominated the Daytona 500, just never lap 200 for the longest time.
Five runner-up finishes with close to 700 laps led in that race, not to
mention insanely bad luck in 1986 and 1990, along with close calls in

his last race in 2001 he was running 3rd on the last lap. He had ten
straight top-10 finishes from 1987-1996.
