This is the last opportunity for Kevin Harvick to win in order to keep his winless streak during the 2020 at four races. This is the fourth time he has gone four races without a win this season. Kevin Harvick, Denny Hamlin, Brad Keseslowski, Chase Elliott, Joey Logano and Martin Truex, Jr has been the best drivers of 2020 so far, and these 6 drivers are all fighting for the Final Four spot. Each of these 6 drivers are the only ones at this point to have led more than 700 laps during the 2020 season, as well as winning multiple races, except Truex. Martin Truex, Jr has had a hot streak of Top 5's prior to the Playoffs, but still has one win to the season. Only Alex Bowman and Kurt Busch are the remaining drivers in which they haven't had a strong year as their other competitors, they are a couple of sleeper choices. 4. Ralphie posted: 10.13.2020 - 9:09 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Barring a fluke of epic proportions Bowman and Busch have no chance to advance to the final 4, and Harvick & Hamlin are mortal locks. Logano, Truex, Keselowski & Elliott are battling for the other 2 spots. There are no more unusual tracks on the schedule so it comes down to 3 mundane ovals. Based on the drivers' recent performance on 1.5-milers and short tracks in 2020, we can rule out Elliott. Truex's stats are certainly not bad, but the 2 Penske guys have been better. So I'll say all 3 Chevys are definitely not racing for the championship (real bold prediction, I know), and it should be 3 Fords vs. eventual 2020 Cup series champion Denny Hamlin at Phoenix. 5. Tarheel posted: 10.13.2020 - 10:16 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 4, three mundane ovals? Texas and Kansas have similarities in grip levels and speeds, but Martinsville and Phoenix are as different from the 1.5 mile tracks and each other as they can be. If you're ruling out Elliott, do so on the basis of Kansas and Texas, he finished 12th at each of those tracks earlier this year. Don't rule him out because of short tracks, he didn't get the finishes to show for it but he's been a top five car in every short track this year with a shot at winning a few of them. 6. How can they be 2 entries short at the Roval in Concord, but in Kansas City, Kansas, we get a full 40 car field? Is it due to the whole aspect of "uncertainty?" Because I can understand. 7. Jimmie4life posted: 10.13.2020 - 10:48 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Will Kevin Harvick win on Sunday and nab his 10th win of 2020? Or will Denny Hamlin go 3 in a row at Kansas. Kevin has won here twice, has the best average finish of any driver who's raced here (9.6), Most laps led, most lead lap finishes, total laps, pole positions, 16 top 10s, 9 top 5s. I think he has a good shot, but Denny Hamlin has won back-to-back races at Kansas, and had back-to-back top 5's also at Kansas prior to 2019. He has also led 74% of his total career laps at Kansas in the last 2 races. 8. Corey posted: 10.13.2020 - 10:54 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) @4 ?A fluke of epic proportions?? While I don't think either are capable of going out and dominating, both are more than likely to be running in the Top 10. If a few things fall their way, one of them can win a race. Each did beat out 8 other guys to be in this round. That was no fluke. What you're thinking of is how Justin Haley and Spire won Daytona 2019. 9. Kevin Harvick: 4th, 5th, 15th (119 points earned) Denny Hamlin: 1st, 20th, 24th (94 points earned) Brad Keselowski: 2nd, 9th, 3rd (113 points earned) Chase Elliott: 12th, 12th, 5th (95 points earned) Joey Logano: 35th, 3rd, 4th (96 points earned) Martin Truex Jr: 3rd, 29th, 1st (106 points earned) Alex Bowman: 8th, 30th, 6th (79 points earned) Kurt Busch: 9th, 8th, 9th (103 points earned) Of course, no two races play out the same. But just for statistical analysis, if each driver were to match his performance at these 3 tracks from earlier this season, this is how the round of 8 would end: 4148 Denny Hamlin (win) 4123 Martin Truex Jr. (win) 4186 Kevin Harvick 4148 Brad Keselowski ---- 4122 Chase Elliott 4118 Joey Logano 4109 Kurt Busch 4088 Alex Bowman 10. Most of our remaining contenders have experienced a lot of ups-and-downs recently. None of them has had more than 3 top 5 finishes in the last 6 races. Kevin Harvick: 5 wins but also 5 finishes of 10th or worse in the last 12 races. Denny Hamlin: His last 8 races have consisted of 3 podium finishes but 5 finishes outside the top 10. Brad Keselowski: In the last 11 races, he has 1 win but no other finishes better than 8th. Chase Elliott: He has 7 top 7 finishes along with 3 poor finishes in the last 10 races. Joey Logano: His last 7 races have consisted of 3 podium finishes but 4 finishes outside the top 10. Martin Truex Jr: In the last 7 races, he has alternated back and forth between a top 7 finish and a finish in the 20s. Alex Bowman: He has 6 top 10 finishes and no finish worse than 16th in the last 8 races, but he has no finishes higher than 5th since early this season. Kurt Busch: His win at Las Vegas and his 4th at the Charlotte Roval are his only finishes better than 8th in the last 15 races. 12. Archie posted: 10.13.2020 - 11:29 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @8 Generally speaking, Busch and Bowman surely can compete for top 10s over the next 3 weeks. Harvick, the JGR & Penske cars all have the equipment to compete for _top 5s_ and wins every week. Elliott's likely overall finish for the next 3 races is somewhere in between those two groups. He may be able to break into the top 4 in points and advance to Phoenix, but the odds don't favor that. There are 15 top-5 slots to be filled in the next 3 races. I'll set the over/under for the total among Busch, Bowman & Elliott at 2 out of 15 (0 wins) and even that feels a little optimistic. I'll also go with Hamlin (ugh) as the 2020 champ. That would shut up the "haters" who would no longer be able to claim he's never won the big one, and would be NASCAR's wet-dream outcome for their new owner/savior to head into 2021 with. 13. Again, this is a huge problem with the charters. Normally, I'd be happy with a team like Trackhouse opening. But if they're replacing a JTG car, then it's not good for the sport unless they can run better than JTG. 18. Chase has had good runs at Kansas, last time we were here in the fall he got second to Hamlin and 4th in the spring race last year. He won the fall race in 2018 and finished 4th in the fall of 2017. Last time we were here he finished 12th, so I'm not really as worried about Kansas as some may be. Texas is where the worries kick in, it's probably one of his worst tracks. His best finish was a 6th in 2018 and last time we were here he got 12th. As for Martinsville, I think he's got a good shot at getting at least some stage points. It's usually been bad luck or Denny Hamlin that's screwed him there in the past, but I have a feeling that he's gonna do pretty good here on Halloween weekend. He's got a shot at making the Championship 4, but it'll take a lot, especially over guys like Truex, Logano (God help us) and Keselowski 27. Then, when they opened a 2nd team, it was #25 (presumably they couldn't get #15 because it was in use by Bud Moore Engineering.) I think 25 may have also been Rick's dad's number. When the #25 went part-time after Tim Richmond's health issues, the 3rd team they opened was #35. 5 & 25 lasted longer than the others, but the original number scheme was 5-15-25-35. If the driver in front comes remotely close to your front bumper in the corner, you lose control because of dirty air. WAKE UP, NASCAR, get rid of this pisspoor clean air package and bring in a package where you can actually pass when you get a run like Harvick did, and bring on a package where you won't get loose because of dirty air. Also, will you kindly screw off, JoLo. You had no business winning that race, your car was not the best one all day, that honor goes to the man who should've won that race: Kevin Harvick. Not sure what NASCAR can do considering they aren't even at full throttle now. They have completely destroyed the 1.5 mile tracks, and the thing is, they were never great to begin with. Glad they are adding more road courses next year, now lets add more short tracks and get back to real racing. Charlotte is the only cookie cutter this sport "needs", and even there the racing sucks generally on the oval, but you can't get rid of the home track i guess. Texas next week is going to be a snoozer. Hopefully Kez and/or 11 has more issues, that is the only chance. Already looking forward to Martinsville. Would I have been happy if Chase won today? If I remember correctly, someone here once said the manufacturers didn't want the cars going over 200 MPH at some tracks, and told them to slow them down. The issue with low HP means cars are more dependent on being the leader than a follower. Also, at certain tracks go barely faster into the turns than in the turns, and less brake is used. So, when a car loses a tire or locks up the steering, they are going full throttle into the turns without braking, meaning more violent hits. It's a bad deal for both sides, but I think NASCAR might not fully be responsible for it. 229. Sector posted: 10.19.2020 - 9:16 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) #226 oops, yeah 4 races now. We have 550hp because Ford, Chevy, and Toyota told NASCAR to cut horsepower or they were going to leave. It has nothing to do with safety and all to do with money. The engines used in NASCAR are made for NASCAR only and are very expensive to run. The Gen 7 will have 550hp because that is what the Ford, Chevy and Toyota want (as well as any future car maker that wants to enter). But they have a symmetrical body style with less sideforce and downforce. 237. Jimmie4life posted: 10.19.2020 - 1:22 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @236 That's what I meant. NASCAR is the one that wants to limit speeds to 200 mph from a safety standpoint. That was close to the take off speed of these cars when they got backwards. With today's safety improvements, that limit has gone up, but They still don't want them getting to much faster as then the ability for the catch fence to contain the cars becomes questioned. 239. When the cars go faster and slide around more, the drivers have to be better. You can't just mash the gas down & turn left for 400 miles, which is basically what the current package allows. I really hope NASCAR will one day bring back fast cars with low downforce and high horsepower. I'll continue to lose interest in the sport until they put things back in the drivers' hands. 241. The bigger flaps on the current car are probably good to a higher speed, altho I haven't seen any wind tunnel numbers, and given how aero works it's not likely to be hugely more. @236 - the engines are used in NASCAR only because that's how the NASCAR rules are written. There's pages of rules on engine block dimensions, which basicaly results in a Ford block being the same as a Chevy block being the same as Toyota block being the same as a Dodge block, and none of them remotely resembling a production block. Same for heads and every other part. The manufacturers would be a lot happier if NASCAR used a production engine, but since NASCAR won't they at least want something that doesn't wear out and have to be replaced multiple times per season. @240 - ask any driver and they'll ask for the same thing, minimal downforce and lots of power. They want a car that's hard to drive, so they can show off their skill and not just go in circles all day. 243.
