Joey Logano is locked in, with 3 more spots left to decide. Austin Dillon won a crazy race earlier this year here. Who will win? Odds are Harvick will win: He's won the last 3 fall races at Texas, all of which he started in the top 3, and are his only 3 wins at Texas in the cup series. 2. Front Row typically makes decisions/announcements in December but McDowell has run well, JHN has struggled lately but somewhat expected from rookie ... JTG has not announced whether Preece coming back ... Also what happens at the 32 car is TBD. TBD on the 96 plans for its schedule for next year... Anon posted: 10.22.2020 - 7:40 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @7 That's really the only other option, though it would have to be sold and not leased based on earlier reports that Spire now owns 3 charters, leasing one to Justin Marks. Regarding who they would put in the rides, I expected them to use the drivers that are under the Spire Sports Entertainment agency, but Chastain going to the 42 throws a wrench in that. This could make Todd Gilliland an unexpected option though being the top guy with nothing announced yet in their agency. Another choice from the agency would be Landon Cassill. I could definitely see Cassill running for them next year, with Haley replacing him in 2022. They could also have Haley run the car part time in addition to his full Xfinity schedule, and then have agency drivers Garrett Smithley or Vinnie Miller fill out the schedule in that car, or of course Reed Sorenson could fill out the schedule as well considering he's run the most races for them this year. JJ Yeley would be a good 1 year driver as well to bridge the gap to Haley in 2022. Yeley has made the 2nd most starts in the Spire car this year. 15. His dominance and lack of personality was definitely a contributing factor if you're willing to look at it objectively. That's in no way Johnson's fault. Jimmie is a great guy and an honorable champion. Dale Earnhardt Jr is also responsible in the decline. When your most popular and marketable star is slightly above average and not winning races and titles that's a problem too. Again , that's not Dale's fault. He's a great dude and ambassador to the sport. Add to Nascar continuously messing with stuff that didn't need fixed like screwing up Bristol , a lack of compelling personalities , this is the end result. The casual fan is long gone. As for the Johnson vs Gordon debate. 7 is better than 4 bottom line end of story 78. Mile501 posted: 10.25.2020 - 7:25 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @77 - I largely agree with your comment, except for the last sentence. Gordon and Johnson were both great drivers. But Gordon has 10 more wins, nearly 100 more top 5s, over 100 top 10s, more than double the poles, and 6,000 more laps led. He did run a few years longer than Johnson, but that alone isn't enough to account for such dramatic differences. Basing such comparisons on championships alone has always been a questionable way to look at it, but it is clearly not the best way to compare drivers from 2004 to the present. 79. Jimmie hasn't has more then 4 Top 5's in the last 4 seasons. Gordon never had less then 5 in any of his. Also Gordon was a more well rounded driver with the ability to win on a wide variety of tracks. Of all of Jimmie's wins, he only had one on a road course and that came from a Marcos Ambrose not being able to re-fire his car. 83. Foote posted: 10.25.2020 - 7:41 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 77 Agree with all of that. ESPN's coverage with Jerry Punch/Marty Reid was also horrendous, and the recession in 2008-09 played a role. Also it was a fad, Americans used to appreciate traditional cars, muscle and speed. Now it's all about Tesla, technology etc. But couldn't agree more with your point about the drivers. Dale Jr was a complete zero in 2009 and 2010 when the sport needed him most. And Johnson was a terrible champion for the sport. When people say "he's a great champion" what exactly does that mean? Is the only requirement for being a great champion to be a good person? I like Jimmie but his crippling fear to show his personality when he was at the top was really bad for the sport's mainstream appeal. And before anyone complains, NASCAR could have a protocol system in place starting next year for fans planning to attend where the start time is subject to change a few hours earlier if rain is a threat. When Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson were both racing in Cup at the same time (full time) and were driving for the same team and the same equipment Jimmie Johnson won 75 races and six Cups, while Jeff Gordon won 35 races and 0 championships... That's right, Goose Egg titles for Gordon. Johnson had 207 top 5's while Gordon had 178. JJ had 314 top 10's to Gordon's 285. Gordon does have him in poles at 42, while Johnson had 34. Who cares about qualifying? Give me the better racer. Gordon won 47 races with Evernham from 1993-1999 and after that he won 46 races from late in 1999 to 2015. The difference was that from 1995-1999 Gordon had overwhelmingly better equipment than just about every other driver but his teammates and maybe the 88 team sparingly. He had the best engines, best pit crew, best facilities, resources, etc. He had the best of everything during that time and arguably the best during the modern era. Hell, Old man Terry Labonte went toe to toe with him and took him behind the shed and won a championship in 1996 in the same equipment. Lets not forget and it's well noted that JJ did a lot of "testing" during the summer months at a lot of tracks preparing for the Chase. Their emphasis was winning championships and honestly that's what it should have been until they started this garbage they have now with the "Game 7" scenario. Wins in a season seem to trump championships now with how the championship is decided in a lot of fans' eyes. Someone mentioned the fact that Jimmie "just" had one crew chief for most of his career was beneath Gordon because Gordon had several more. The fact is though that Gordon's stats went down considerably after Evernham left and I'll give him a break and say that the field caught up to HMS some such as JGR and Roush for a while. Also, JJ and Chad Knaus should be commended for their longevity with all the ups and downs that driver and crew chief can have. Especially where we live in a world that any small sign of struggles can cause a lot of change within a team such as Penske last season. Gordon was the better road racer, however, again when both were at HMS at the same time, Gordon won two road races while Johnson won one. And who cares about the Ambrose issue that helped Johnson at Sonoma. Gordon has benefitted from drivers having trouble late and won races because of it. It happens. When push came to shove and when it mattered most such as 2007, give me JJ all day over Jeffie. JJ > Gordon 120. He's the one who built Hendrick into the powerhouse it would become, setting the stage for later drivers such as Johnson. He was more versatile than Johnson and generally better on the tougher tracks such as road courses. He was more dominant on the surface at his absolute peak from 1995-1998 than Johnson ever was. He ended his career still competitive, and had a great season in 2014 when he was 43, while Johnson tanked at 42. However, those can all pretty much be nullified by one thing: for 14 years, they raced against each other and were only four years apart in age. And during those 14 years, Johnson was clearly better in just about every single one of them, with the only exceptions after Johnson's first two seasons being 2011 and 2014. No, I did not forget 2007 or 2004. The only difference between their legacies is that Gordon was discovered at an earlier age and got to rack up wins in the late 90s against drivers who were in their twilight years before everyone else from his generation joined him in the cup series. Had the two of them been rookies during the same season, Johnson would likely have a sizable edge in the win column and it wouldn't even be a conversation. And yes, the titles do matter. Johnson proved time and time again he had ice in his veins, while Gordon could never get it done under the rules in place once it became harder to win titles. 124. Yes, it was some BS as Sector mentioned, however, he did put himself in position to win and prepared himself to be lucky if the opportunity presented itself and it did. "A walk off for the ages." Granted they did have the race originally scheduled to start at 3:30, which I will agree is monumentally stupid. They say that later start times bumps the ratings up, but the Indy 500 this year disproved that theory. Noon and 1 PM start times would be great and would prevent this many rain delays though, we've seen this happen far too many times, especially this year. Exhibit A: the Daytona 500. A 3 PM start time allowed only 20 laps to be completed on Sunday before rain forced the race to be postponed until Monday, if the race had started at noon or even 1, they would've easily gotten to at least halfway if not the finish of the race before the rains. Exhibit B: Homestead. Granted NASCAR was boxed in with this one, as the Xfinity race was ran before it at noon, but that goes back to the original argument of noon to 1 PM start times, why didn't they just schedule it that way in the first place. Exhibit C: Talladega, twice. On Sunday, the race was scheduled to start at 3:00 PM, when a rain shower hit the track as the broadcast began, forcing a Monday postponement. On Monday, the race was started, once again at 3:00 PM, when rain hit at the end of stage 1, the race was delayed until around 5:00 PM that day and was finished. Exhibit D: The Poconos. On Saturday, a lengthy rain delay was caused by a 10 minute shower because of seepage (similar to today), resulting in a 4:45 PM start in lieu of a 3:00 PM start. On Sunday, the race was started at 4:00 PM, but a rain shower delayed the race until around 6:00 with only 2 hours of daylight left. Exhibit E: Indy. The race was scheduled to start at 4:00 PM, but lightning in the area delayed the race until around 5:30 PM and the race to the sunset began from there. 149. I think they overstate the need for a vast number of compounds and constructions - the reason they have that for slicks is because they want to go faster each year, not because there's any inherent reason for it; they could have one rain compound designed to be safe everywhere, and just accept it's going to be slow at some tracks. Overall, tho, the main point was valid: it'd be a lot of work and money for something that would only rarely be used and likely produce a dull, single-file race. 181. He had a brake failure and hit the wall at a high speed at the same type of side-first angle that has been known to cause head injuries, and it would explain the immediate drop in performance afterwards that he never recovered from. 184. Prior to that Pocono crash, Johnson never led fewer than 500 laps in a season. In the 3.5 years since, he has only led about 300 total laps. They are not F1 and this is an extremely rare event. Aside from the COVID-19 pandemic, I can only think of four races since I started watching in 1996 where the races was more then a day from it originally scheduled date. Sure, it's frustrating for the fans, but at least we can carry on with our lives while we wait for the resumption. Right now there are a couple hundred people on Texas, who had other things scheduled for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday that they are missing out on. Dale Jr even left the track due to commitments for his podcast and the Dale Jr Download TV show. Joey Logano wanted to send Paul Wolfe back to Charlotte to work on the Phoenix car. I do find it comical that what was supposed to be a one day show, is now longer than what a typical weekend would be. I wouldn't say it's outside the realm of possibility, if the rain were to persist another couple of days (though fortunately, it does look like they'll finally get it in later today). It also wouldn't really impact the championship if they had to run Martinsville and then come back to complete Texas. 291. possum posted: 10.28.2020 - 10:55 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @289 - what Mile said is correct, NASCAR has stopped a race and resumed it after another one more than once in it's history, and they certainly could do it again if they wanted to. That said, it would make a lot more sense to just push Martinsville back to mid-week if they have to in order to finish Texas first. With the fans in the stands (if any) just being local people there'd be no negatives to delaying Martinsville, other than screwing with NBC's schedule, and even then reworking the TV schedule is probably less effort than doing the second half of Texas at some random later date. 292. When the schedule was around 50 races or more, you had to have weekends with multiple races and these conflicts were bound to happen. And yes, as Corey mentioned the current playoff format is more sensitive to having the races run in the order planned at the start of the season. If it was a season long championship, or even a 10 races playoff without eliminations and resets, it wouldn't really matter what order the last few races of the season were run in. 298. The following at-track penalties were assessed to the team: Loss of 20 owner and driver points. $35,000 fine. 489. He's got what some blamed him & Kyle Busch having in 2018...a boredom of winning. It's more natural to win, than to not win and their interviews reflected it "yea crew chief did a great job, can't thank the guys at the shop enough, thanks to our sponsors." Honestly I'd only say he has more personality than Jimmie because of how he handles non-success and his history with getting into it with other drivers. @487 I have to agree with everything you said (except Jimmie's wins being enjoyable for me, I was anti-Jimmie from 2007-2017 with 1 exception: Homestead 2016 AFTER Carl Edwards wrecked out and Busch wasn't going to beat Logano), and I'll add that Truex's wins do really seem to be boring. One exception is 2017 Homestead, but that one seemed like nascar made sure Truex got it (and yes, he deserved it for the year he had, but that race Kyle was going to beat him) Brad Keselowski's wins might not be boring (like Richmond & Loudon this year, Martinsville last year) but they usually are severely disappointing and can be considered theft: Bristol & Charlotte 2020, Kansas & Atlanta 2019, Vegas 2, Indy & Darlington 2018 491. Before that, it was Homestead 2017, and before that I can't think of anything exciting. He's not the most boring driver on the track, an honor that currently goes to Ryan Preece. Truex is definitely not the most boring driver of all time either, that honor goes to Paul Menard. 499. RaceFanX posted: 10.30.2020 - 9:37 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) I like how this race contrasts NASCAR to F1 a bit. In F1 it's not uncommon for team orders to be issued to have one driver move over for his teammate if his teammate is in the championship hunt, up to and including ordering a driver to let his partner win. In NASCAR you de facto can't do that because even teammates have different sponsors which mostly prevents this. If Busch had pulled over to let Truex win Martin would get an automatic shot at the title. Instead Busch held position for a somewhat feel good win (not fully, Kyle is polarizing, but I smiled even if he's not my driver) and Truex is now in a must win situation at Martinsville. 509.
