Safest bets to lock in on Q speed are the 33 of Cindric and either the 37 of Preece or the 62 of Gragson. The two that are really going to struggle I think will be the 66 and 13 MBM teams. Grala and Dillon have a good chance of racing in, 96 team lacks speed but Ty has been good on Superspeedway tracks. There will be at least one surprise DNQ. 2. Anonymous posted: 02.09.2021 - 12:34 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I think the 33 makes it in on speed and in total it will be the 37, 36, 33, and 96 that make it in. But the 16 and 62 are also a good possibility to make it in. So essentially I view it has 4 guys fighting for 2 spots. Someone is gonna be a suprise DNQ. 3. While the Rolex 24 was certainly a treat to behold, it isn't as invigorating as kicking off what I see as the official return from the Motorsports offseason. 43 cars are entered(It's actually 44 since the 96 car made an entry with Ty Dillon), and it's not just filler for the Duel races. There are many stout teams that will compete for the Pole position on Wednesday and for the Daytona 500 on Thursday. If Mother Nature is kind to us, we may get the 63rd Annual running of the Great American Race in, but as of now, it looks like weather could affect the entire weekend. 7. DI9_ForLife posted: 02.09.2021 - 1:52 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I'm expecting Preece and Cindric to lock in on speed (definitely Cindric, maybe Preece), leaving the other 6 to duke it out on Thursday. I really don't know who's gonna race in out of the remaining competitive entries. MBM will almost definitely miss the field, but besides them everyone is on a level playing field. My first instinct says that Gragson and Ragan will be the ones who make it, leaving Grala and Dillon as the other 2 competitive entries out, but Grala has won at Daytona before and Dillon is a good plate racer, so anything could happen. 8. 34McDowellFan posted: 02.09.2021 - 2:24 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) It's here! First race for 23XI Racing, a team co-owned by Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin First race for Live Fast Motorsports, a team co-owned by BJ McLeod and Matt Tifft First race for Trackhouse, a team owned by Justin Marks Cup Series debuts for Chase Briscoe, Anthony Alfredo, and, if they make the field, Austin Cindric and Noah Gragson. This will be the last Daytona 500 for the Gen 6 car, as the Next Gen car will debut in 2022 (a year later than planned due to the Coronavirus Pandemic) There are also a few surprises in the field, such as Derrike Cope in the #15 making his first start since 2018 and Jamie McMurray, making his first start since his "final" race in 2019. Other notes -Kyle Larson's return to NASCAR after losing his ride for saying a racial slur in April 2020 -Corey Lajoie will drive the new 2nd Spire Mototrsports car -Garrett Smithley will drive the 2nd car for Carl Long, that has been renumbered to #13 with the closure of Germain Racing -Kaz Grala attempting his 2nd Cup race, he has 3 top 5's in 3 races across the Truck and Xfinity Series here -Christopher Bell's 1st race in the Cup Series for JGR -David Ragan returns for his first Cup race since finishing 4th here last season -Ryan Preece returns to JTG, but the team has lost its charter, so the #37 has to qualify for this race and may not run the full season -Ross Chastain will make his 1st Cup Series start for Chip Ganassi Racing. Chastain's career has set multiple setbacks but he's finally in solid equipment in the top series of NASCAR, I think it'll be fun to watch him this year -Erik Jones moves over to the #43 -Alex Bowman's 1st race in the #48. This is the same team as the #88 he has driven since 2018, but this year its renumbered to #48 with Ally sponsorship as 7-Time Champion Jimmie Johnson retired after 2020 -Noah Gragson will run the #62 with a heavy heart, as team owner Mark Beard passed away just a couple of weeks before Daytona -Lastly, in one of the final moves of silly season, Ty Dillon is now a Toyota driver, believe it or not. He will drive the #96 part-time in the Cup Series this year, in addition to driving the #54 in select Xfinity races The 2021 season has A LOT of storylines going into it. And we're only 5 days away from getting it underway in the Daytona 500. 9. Accuweather's forecast shows a 25% chance of rain on Friday, 60% on Saturday and 30% on Sunday. Weather Channel shows 50% chance of rain on Friday, 60% on Saturday and 70% on Sunday. Either way, at least one of the races will likely be delayed this weekend, if not all of them. Not looking good right now, but it could still change 10. Nascar#1Fan posted: 02.09.2021 - 2:39 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Cindric makes it on speed. As for the other, it could be Gragson, Preece, Ragan, or even Dillon. In the duels, I'll go out on a limb and say Timmy Hill makes it. Gragson or Ragan will also if Preece got the final speed entry. If one of them got it, then it will be either the other one or Dillon making the final duel spot. So I have Smithley, Grala, and two of Dillon, Gragson or Ragan going home. 11. Jimmie4life posted: 02.09.2021 - 3:18 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I think that Cindric, Preece, Hill, and Grala make it in on time. Ty Dillon will probably be the one who will be most surprising in my opinion to fail to make the race, but, I think that Gaunt Brothers will be snake bitten a 2nd Daytona 500 in a row just like last year, and fail to make the race. Cindric makes it in on speed, unless he ends up in a duel race on his own without his teammates, but even then, he still is a good enough superspeedway racer to find a way in. Ryan Preece may not have had a good season last year, but the bright spots were his superspeedway results, which were fairly good for the rotten season that unfolded. Timmy Hill makes it in because he stays out of trouble and just bides his time and finds a way through. Kaz Grala's Kaulig team car was pretty solid in last year's Daytona 500, and so, I think if he just doesn't do too much and is patient, he makes it into the 500. 13. Yeet posted: 02.09.2021 - 5:15 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Here's a rundown of the eight teams attempting to make this year's Daytona 500... #13 Garrett Smithley (Motorsports Business Management) Garrett Smithley was able to make breakthroughs in his career by competing in several NASCAR Cup Series races in 2020, and look for him to be doing the same this year. Longtime sponsor Trophy Tractor will be in the hood of a beautiful MBM entry renumbered from 49 to 13 in the off-season, as MBM continues to try and expand their efforts in the Cup Series. It will be a tall task for the crew but look for that Yates engine to pay dividends for them. #16 Kaz Grala (Kaulig Racing) After finish 8th in last year's 500, it made it obvious that Kaulig Racing should attempt to make the Great American Race once again. Kaz Grala, who is no stranger to victory lane at Daytona, will be pilot of the Hyperice Chevrolet, in what should feel like an audition for Kaz to show his skills behind a Cup car. We already know that Kaulig is wonderful at plate racing in Xfinity, can that duplicate that same success? #33 Austin Cindric (Team Penske) It must be really nice to be Austin Cindric right now. Coming fresh off an Xfinity championship, guaranteed a Cup ride for next year, and gets an opportunity to run in the Daytona 500 with Verizon. He's been considered a favorite by many to lock himself in on speed, but as we all know nothing is guaranteed at Daytona, but even so, expect him up front with the Penske teammates in his race. Regardless of what happens, Cindric will be one to watch for the future. #36 David Ragan (Front Row Motorsports) After finishing 4th in last year's event, David Ragan will once again drive the Select Blinds #36 Ford. Only one roadblock; Ragan isn't guaranteed a spot this year, and is running as an Open car. Given how collected Ragan usually is, I can't imagine it is detrimental to him, and the 2013 Talladega winner will look for the magic once again this week with Front Row Motorsports. #37 Ryan Preece (JTG-Daughtery Racing) Ryan finds himself without a charter, a full time season, and a guaranteed spot in the 500 this year, but Ryan is known to rise up when his future isn't guaranteed, such as becoming a race winner with JGR when it wasn't known if he'd be offered a drive again. His teammate, Ricky Stenhouse Jr, won the pole last year for the 500, and JTG will look to give Preece a super fast car like his was, which would make his week a lot easier clocking in to the race, which would evade him of the calamity that will inevitably ensue in the Duels. #62 Noah Gragson (Beard Motorsports) The Beard Motorsports team has just one full time crew member, but that means little when they are determined as they've been, currently 4 for 4 in making this race. However, it is the first time the Beard 62 will be without Brendan Gaughan, who retired last year and knighted Noah Gragson to be next up. Noah is known for his checkers or wreckers mentality and not giving a hell what others think of him, so you know he will be all out every lap this week. After the passing of Mark Beard, the man who put this wonderful small team together, Noah's name over the door will be replaced with Mark's, as the team aims to make the race in his honor. #66 Timmy Hill (Motorsports Business Management) MBM making the 2020 Daytona 500 was arguably the great Cinderella story of last year, and Timmy says is what allows MBM to run significantly more Cup events today. With a much tighter field this time around, can he repeat the magic? He will look to do so in his #66 VSI Racing Ford for MBM, with a powerful Yates engine similar to the one that got him in the race last February. Timmy knows how to be present at the right time to qualify, so watch out for this dark horse. #96 Ty Dillon (Gaunt Brothers Racing) After the shutdown of Germain Racing, Ty Dillon found himself without a ride for 2021, and this deal didn't come until super late in the offseason. That being said, the 96 team is still a solid competitor to make the 500, and will be a force for all the Open cars for sure. Ty plans to join Gaunt for a handful of races this season but also finds himself piloting the JGR #54 in Xfinity for select races as well, so he has to show his Toyota teams that he was the right pick for the job. Bass Pro Shops and Black Rifle Coffee will be joining this effort, and look out for this bright orange 96 car under the lights. 14. It's definately true that running a fast lap all by yourself on the track is a special skill that some drivers do better than others (the trick is to basically not turn the steering wheel, something easier said than done on an oval track). Of those that have qual'd a Cup car before, Preece does seem to have the edge, with Ragan next. Cindric's car will certainly have the potential of going fast, but will the driver be able to take advantage of it? 17. I've missed the laid-back broadcasts and getting to see all the paint schemes before Sunday's race. After first practice, it appears the favorites to take the first 2 spots in qualifying are Bubba Wallace & Martin Truex Jr. As for the open teams, the 2 most likely to qualify their way in on speed tonight are Ryan Preece & Ty Dillon. The 2 most likely to race their way in tomorrow night are Kaz Grala & David Ragan. That would leave Austin Cindric, Noah Gragson, Garrett Smithley & Timmy Hill out of the Daytona 500. They were of course wrong, perhaps only thanks to catastrophic events beyond the control of NASCAR or any team (poor Kyle Busch missed his widdle practice sessions and sucked/sulked all year, etc.). With NASCAR fully vested in the immediate and spectacular success of a certain new Toyota team, and the dead wood of Erik Jones replaced by Christopher Bell @ JGR, could THIS year deliver the results that were expected last year? We'll find out starting very soon, and I'll add this: people who are expecting Hendrick Motorsports to run the table (Champion Chase Elliott!!! Kyle Larson is back and better than ever!!!) and duplicate their successes of 2020 are likely to be massively disappointed. 2021 is far more likely to follow the form of 2018 or 2019 rather than the discombobulated year that was 2020. 34. Erik was allowed to languish for four years under a CC that had not proven himself at the Cup level, and the bulk of who's success in Xfinity was with Kyle Busch behind the wheel, but the instant Kyle Busch himself has one subpar season he gets a new CC, Erik gets the boot, and his replacement gets a 28 time cup winning CC the minute he joins Gibbs. There's almost always more to a drivers results than meets the eye, but most people never bother to look for it. Denny Hamlin appeared to be the dead weight at Gibbs for a few years, he got a new CC and started winning again. Erik was not afforded the chance to work with a new CC. 35. Will a one time Daytona 500 champ get his second (Cope, Harvick, Newman, McMurray, Logano, Ku. Busch, A. Dillon)? Will the defending Cup champion win (Elliott)? It hasn't happened since D. Jarrett in 2000 ('99 Cup Champion). Jeff Gordon did it the year before that and you have to go back all the way to the 1977 Daytona 500 champ Cale Yarborough was the 1976 WC champion. Which rookie or sophomore will finish the highest? Can Kyle Busch or Brad Keselowski finally win the Great American race? BK is 0/11 and needs it to have all the Crown Jewels. Ky. Busch is currently 0/15. He needs this race to complete his career and have all the Crown Jewels as well (if you consider '08 Darlington in the Spring one). Right now he has led 296 laps in Daytona 500 races. Right now he is second all time in laps led in the Daytona 500 without winning the race. Tony Stewart has the most laps led in Daytona 500 races with 299 without a win. It's not a distinction that you want. For the longest time Dale Earnhardt led the most laps (669) without winning the race with until he finally won in 1998. And finally, can Denny Hamlin reach Daytona 500 immortality and win an unprecedented third Daytona 500 in a row??? Richard Petty (73-74), Cale Yarborough (83-84), and Sterling Marlin (94-95) all had chances and all led in their attempt to win three straight, however, engine problems plagued all three drivers in their attempt. Petty led 51 laps and finished 7th (8 laps down), Yarborough led 32 laps and was about the only one to keep up with Bill Elliott in the first 150 miles, but his engine blew. Also, Cale was going for his third in a different car manufacturer for the third year as well (Pontiac, Chevy, Ford). Sterling Marlin had just taken the lead on lap 77 and led three laps but blew up. Good luck, Denny... My prediction for the race: The Toyotas will be very difficult to beat, especially if they stick together like they did in 2016 and 2019. Of course we know how circumstances can make it hard to stick together in this race. Without going back to Noah's Ark driving (because that sure wasn't real racing) from the early 2010's, I'm not sure that there is a safe way to break up the packs at this point without getting rid of some of the gimmicks NASCAR seems to be willing to die over. *coughstagescough* Sorry, something got stuck in my throat for a moment there. 223. Mind you, I do not mean anyone specifically, just I see that posted by a lot of people in groups and forums. Stages are simply two cautions that may or may not have happened in the race either way. They really don't change anything except a guy lapping the whole field. That's a run race to watch ain't it? I am not so sure the "they hadn't found the secrets" holds up. There were things about those cars that made them hard to drive wide open. No one was keeping it to the floor. You also had to be able to handle a lot more back then. I never was a fan of DW, but it seemed during the late 70's to the mid 80's he could sense trouble as well and could sense what was about to happen. You can't win the Daytona 500 in the first 15 laps, but you sure can lose it. After the red flag came out today, he got out of his car and him and Bubba were walking back to their pit road spots and he looked at his crew and started pointing at his head, basically saying... Suddenly you are now having to split your safety resources for two different accidents. 609. Gopher88 posted: 02.15.2021 - 3:57 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) You know, overall, a solid Speedweek. The Clash and Duels were fantastic, Truck race was good, and Xfinity and Cup were fine. Entertaining. Unpredictable. Probably one of the more memorable weeks collectively in Daytona 500 history. Also, considering last week we were looking at a solid 7 days of rain, the only issues was a two-hour delay for duel 2 and obviously the 6 hour 500 delay. We got pretty lucky this week, to be honest on the weather front. 610. Allen posted: 02.15.2021 - 8:31 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @596, no they're not... 611. It's not about entertainment. It's about competition. The Super Bowl of Stock Car racing shouldn't end under caution when there was no harm in front of the leaders. 2007, 2018, and 2020 they let them race back to the line and there were worse looking crashes, ask Clint Bowyer or Ryan Newman. It shouldn't have been any different. @608 They have plenty of safety trucks spaced out at different areas at the track. 615. Denny Hamlin has an 4.25 avg. finish in his last eight Daytona 500 starts, three wins, seven top 5's, and 344 laps led. It used to be Daytona Dale (16 top-10's, 12 top-5's, and seven podiums in 23 starts) and even Daytona Dale Jr. (eight podiums in 18 starts). Few drivers have it at Daytona. Of course both Dales were good in the Summer there as well. Daytona Denny 616. The last lap should be no different. 2007, NASCAR was criticized for not throwing it, and they should gave done the same in 2018. 2020 did in fact end under caution, they threw it for Newman's wreck. But wanting to see a green finish with a wreck behind them is more about you wanting an entertaining finish over the safety of the drivers. So no, there is no agree to disagree. 617. Here's what I came up with 22 - 2000 (What. A. Bore. Undoubtedly the worst 500 of the 21st century, probably the worst of all time) 21 - 2013 (Same case as 2000, only slightly better because this one had more lead changes and even a few laps of 2x2 racing) 20 - 2009 (This race would've ranked higher if it wasn't for the fact that it was rain shortened. It rained for like 10 minutes before NASCAR and Fox called it. Could've been great, but was ended way too early) 19 - 2003 (Same case as 2009, only the racing was slightly better in my opinion. The race was called just as the action was heating up, resulting in the shortest 500 of all time) 18 - 2021 (Stages one and two were actually alright in my opinion. The strategy was interesting to watch, but the final stage was so infuriating to watch when no one would make a move until the final lap. Great winner, slightly below average race) 17 - 2004 (First 100 or so laps were great, final 100 or so laps were pretty bad. The pack became really spread out because of pit stops and Dale Jr. won in anticlimactic fashion. Great winner, average race) 16 - 2006 (This is where the races become good to excellent. Not a bad race at all, but it was pretty anticlimactic and overall was kind of a dreary day to hold a race, it was very foggy and rain was lurking. There was an anticlimactic finish to this crazy, caution filled race.) 15 - 2012 (The racing product really didn't measure up to the wackiness of the race, the outside line could never get going. It was delayed until Monday night and didn't finish until like 3 in the morning after Montoya hit the jet dryer.) 14 - 2018 (Stages 1 and 2 were great, but up until the final caution, everyone jumped on a freight train led by Ryan Blaney for 55 laps. Besides that, the racing was great; and the finish, while kind of egregious on Dillon's part, was iconic.) 13 - 2016 (Race was kind of average, kind of like 2012, the outside line could never get going once the Toyota's got up front, but the finish was spectacular, without a doubt the best finish in Daytona 500 history. It was also refreshing to see a clean 500, with the biggest wreck only involving 3 cars.) 12 - 2017 (Quite an underrated race in my opinion. It became a wreckfest at the start of stage 3, but stages one and two were really good and the final 20 laps were also great. It was great to see a 500 end on a fuel mileage finish, just like the older 500's.) 11 - 2008 (Another good race, but outside of Newman winning it didn't really have a defining moment. I don't remember a lot from this race outside of the finish, I'll have to go back and re-watch it.) 10 - 2019 (An excellent 500 ruined by 3 big wrecks in the final 10 laps that decimated essentially all of the competitive field outside of Hamlin, Busch, and Logano. The finish was quite a letdown, but it was special, as Hamlin won the race while racing for JD Gibbs, who has died over the offseason.) 9 - 2010 (The Pothole 500, as it is colloquially known, was actually a great one. The racing was great all day, as per usual for COT plate races, but the main highlight was the mild upset winner that was Jamie McMurray. The win still stands as one of the most memorable finishes to the Great American Race, one that will stand the test of time.) 8 - 2007 (Everyone remembers this race for the final 50 laps and the finish, but everyone forgets how mine numbingly boring the first 150 were. It was looking like one of the most average 500's up until Stewart and Busch wrecked each other out, then it was go time. If the whole race was as good as the final 50 laps, it would be #1 or #2 for sure.) 7 - 2015 (A criminally underrated edition of the 500 in my opinion, the race had a little bit of everything: good racing, strategy, long runs, short runs, very little single file racing, and to top it all off an amazing final 30 laps. They were 3x3 all the way back for about 15 laps straight and didn't wreck until the final lap. The ending was anticlimactic, but this race was one to remember for sure.) 6 - 2005 (Another excellent 500 that falls into the same category as 2015, one that doesn't get talked about enough. It has almost everything needed to be an excellent race.) 5 - 2002 (It was a good sequel to the 2001 edition, only it wasn't as somber. The racing was spectacular all day long, there were some iconic moments, just a little bit of everything. All of that was topped of by award Burton pulling off an upset and winning the race after Sterling Marlin threw it away with one dumb move.) 4 - 2020 (Only Newman's wreck at the finish tarnished this spectacular race. This was the first 500 with the current Superspeedway package that we have, and it did not disappoint. The racing was great all day long, but the action really got heated in stage 3. Many competitive cars were still in contention to win, and everyone threw it into overdrive when the green flag fell on stage 3. The finish was excellent, as it ended in a photo finish between Blaney and Hamlin, but all of the focused was switched to Ryan Newman, who had suffered injuries after a spectacular crash on the last lap. Thankfully, he was alright.) 3 - 2011 (The debut of tandem drafting, the style of racing was very polarizing, but personally, I loved this race. The wrecks were very excessive, but the race was a historical one. It holds the record for the most lead changes in Daytona 500 history at 74 and is still known for hosting one of the greatest upset wins in NASCAR history, as Trevor Bayne, in only his second career start, was able to win the race with a push from Carl Edwards. Bayne was the youngest driver in Daytona 500 history at only 20 years old, another record that still stands today. This race will be known as one of the best 500's of all time in the future.) 2 - 2014 (Only one race could top this one as the greatest of this century, and we'll get to it in a minute, but the 2014 Daytona 500 will forever be known as one of the greatest of all time. After a 6 and half hour rain delay, the racing picked up at night, and the action was crazy from the get go. Throughout a 99 lap green flag run, there was a lot of 3 wide, action packed racing, pit strategies, and the dominant cars were established. Dale Jr and Denny Hamlin were two forces to be reckoned with that night, and after a few big wrecks and some more excellent racing, Dale Jr prevailed in a finish for the ages. As a Junior fan, I hold this race close to my heart as one of my favorites of all time.) 1 - 2001 (The greatest Daytona 499 of all time, bar none. The wicker bill package improved the racing over the previous year's edition by a mile, there was constant 3 wide action, lead changes galore, just great racing overall. Only 3 caution flags flew during the event, which allowed the race to play out naturally, and it was great to watch. The big one on lap 173 was a wild one, and it took out a lot of great competitors, but the last ones standing were clearly Michael Waltrip, Dale Jr and Dale Earnhardt Sr. The 3 worked together for the final 17 laps of the race to lead Michael Waltrip to his first career in 462 races, but the race is shrouded in tragedy, as Dale Earnhardt was killed in a crash on the last lap. I believe that if Dale hadn't died, this race would be regarded as the greatest Daytona 500 ever, and not just the greatest Daytona 499 of all time) 622. timmy posted: 02.17.2021 - 3:05 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) So I understand how Dillon ended up with 48 points with the 3rd place finish and stage points, but how does he have 58 points in the points standings at the bottom of the page? 623.
