NASCAR increased the length of the Daytona Road Course race from 65 to 70 laps, making the race 18 miles longer. Last year was a solid race with a decent amount of strategy and battles for the lead. If anything, I think that race can be similar to last years, albeit with a bit cooler temperatures. 2. RaceFanX posted: 02.15.2021 - 11:58 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) The Daytona Road Course makes an unexpected return to the NASCAR Cup schedule to act as the first of seven planned road course races this season. This race was initially announced on the 2021 schedule as the final race on the big 2-mile Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California before its conversion into a short track but with the Covid-19 pandemic lingering, and South California locked down tighter than Folsom Prison as a result, NASCAR decided in December to cancel the Fontana race and move it to the Daytona road course; allowing the teams to stay in Florida after the 500. The Daytona road course was never meant to host a points-paying Cup race but now has hosted one two years in a row. The Busch Clash was held as scheduled on the Daytona road course for the first time in 2021. Including that exhibition, this will mark the second of the season's first three races to be held on the infield circuit. 3. 34McDowellFan posted: 02.15.2021 - 11:58 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) If it rains Michael McDowell could actually have a chance at 2 wins in a row But knowing NASCAR there will either be clear skies all week or just lightning and no rain 4. Why would NASCAR not call it the O'Reilly Auto Parts 250 instead of 253? The way the numbers round, it would still be 70 laps (250 miles = 69.25 laps on this circuit, and NASCAR customarily rounds up to the next full lap). 8. 34McDowellFan posted: 02.15.2021 - 4:17 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I think the #78 in Cup this season should he kept separate in stats. Of course he's had extreme success on the road courses but Truex is almost has been just as good(but with bad luck and a few mistakes) Truex was the best car during the clash will be good to see a battle between the 9 & 19. The Dinger is also racing can't count him out. 12. This year, he'll have a much better starting spot and he has tons of momentum on his side. 15. possum posted: 02.16.2021 - 7:40 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @10 - but as Mile pointed out, usually NASCAR would round to 250. There must be some reason for the odd number. 16. Corey posted: 02.16.2021 - 8:08 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @15 My only guess then is that O'Reilly wanted the a number closest to the actual mileage distance instead of a rounded number. The roval in the rain was nuts 24. DI9_ForLife posted: 02.18.2021 - 3:01 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) If the Clash is any indication of what this race could be, I think it'll be a good one. Chase getting the pole by metrics is great, but it still feels kind of illegitimate because of the lack of traditional qualifying. Oh well, it's what the team owners wanted I guess. Of course the weather looks bright and sunny for Sunday when we actually want it to rain, but either way road course racing is fun to watch. I'm gonna take either Chase or Truex for the win on Sunday, Chase is a distinguished road racer and is the only driver to win at the tracks besides Kyle Busch in the Clash and Truex seemed to have the car tuned up last Tuesday, I think he would've won that race if he hadn't wrecked. Blaney would also be a good pick, he looked like a real contender last week as well until Chase wrecked him (Dammit Chase, he's my second favorite, ya know). 25. DI9_ForLife posted: 02.18.2021 - 3:01 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) As for Xfinity and Trucks, Austin Cindric has essentially already been penciled in as the winner of the Xfinity race, but I don't think he'll be invincible. Trucks will be interesting since there's rain in the forecast, if rain comes, it'll shake things up really good. In the event of rain, I think anyone can win it, but Moffitt and Creed have to be the favorites, Grala is my darkhorse pick 26. Canadianfan posted: 02.18.2021 - 4:38 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) From Bob Leavine: bd the owners were given a choice between voting for the dirt race or vote for doing away with the short weekend's that we were originally told would continue in 2021. Teams were coerced into voting for the dirt race or pay hundreds-of thousands of dollars more. (Bob posted this on November 28. As Bob said teams were basically forced to choose between a dirt race or a return to practice and qualifying. They chose the dirt race.) 27. Thanks to last week, he starts second Sunday. He could actually be in the mix for another win since he won't have to spend the whole race making up track position. 28. 34McDowellFan posted: 02.20.2021 - 7:17 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Some headlines going into Sunday Chase Elliott is looking for his 5th straight Road Course win. To break Jeff Gordon's record of 6 straight he would have to win this race, COTA in May (tie the record), and then Sonoma. The only issue for Elliott is Sonoma is a track he has never won at (the track was not on the 2020 schedule because of the COVID-19 pandemic). Daytona 500 Winner Michael McDowell will start 2nd, the best starting spot in his career (Previous best: 2020 Charlotte 2, started 3rd through invert). McDowell is good on the Road Courses, so another top 10 to start the season is not out of the question. Austin Dillon will start 3rd. Dillon tested positive for COVID-19 prior to the 2020 race here, so this will be his first time in a stock car on this track. Although, he ran the 24 Hours of Daytona in January. Dillon has never scored a top 10 on a road course. A.J. Allmendinger will make his first Cup Series start since 2018. Allmendinger is known for being strong on the Road Courses, and I think a top 10, *maybe* a top 5, is possible. Cup debut for Scott Heckert. First races of 2021 for Justin Haley, Garrett Smithley, Scott Heckert (Cup debut), A.J. Allmendinger, Ty Dillon, James Davison, and Timmy Hill. 29. You're so bent on blaming Hamlin, that I bet you didn't notice Briscoe get into the back of Hamlin in the same incident. That was a racing incident that Elliott was on the wrong side of. And a win becomes a fluke because of the big one on Lap 15? That means it would have been a fluke no matter who the winner was, including Byron. If you want a fluke win, see Justin Haley at Daytona or David Reutemann at Charlotte. Heck, I'll throw in Joey Logano's first win at Loudon for good measure. 267. Something like Kasey Kahne's final win at Indy (where he still had to earn the win, but an unusually high percentage of top cars crashed out) would be borderline in my opinion. Between practices and lower level races, drivers usually get a few cracks at a track before racing it in the big show. But you can tell that these guys didn't get any warmup time there, because they all drive like lunatics and confused children and it is incredibly entertaining to watch. Sans context the results look like those of a plate track, not a road course. Some notes; - Props to the guys like Keselowski, Busch, Jones, and McDowell who overcame various pratfalls to have good finishes. Busch raced hard all day and McDowell ran a smart race after his early gaffe. Great start for the 34 team. Keselowski was truly hilarious to watch. - Back-to-back first-time winners is a cool way to start the season. Didn't think Bell was gonna be a good road racer yet, but really strong performance from him. - Given how strong AJ Allmendinger is on road courses and plate tracks, it's insane that a mid-pack team didn't sign him this year to try to spike a playoff run. With better equipment and especially a better pit crew he might have been in contention to win. - For a new team, Trackhouse hasn't looked to bad so far. Suarez had a solid car during speedweeks and ran in the top-20 nearly all day today. Definitely looks an upgrade from Gaunt Brothers (who had a fine race in their own right), hope they can keep it up. - As fun as it is to dunk on RWR for the money laundering scheme they got going on, Davison and Ware weren't embarrassingly slow today even if Cody had some adventurous interactions. Davison's 23rd place finish is not only a career best but only his second ever Cup finish better than 30th. (Bilicki and Smithley teams both sucked again FWIW) - I didn't think much of Ryan Preece coming into the year, but he's racing like his career and team depend on it and has put together two smart and strong races in a row. - Chase Briscoe driving with his hood over his windshield was a very funny moment but the announcers saying that his car was still legal because technically the hood was still attached was great broadcasting. 292. Winning on fuel mileage is not a fluke, that's strategy. Dominant driver gets taken out? That's racing. They are not immune to crashing or mechanical failures. For a guy who's been out of a Nascar seat nearly a full year, he finished top 10 at the Daytona 500 and was making the pass on Truex with about 4 to go when he drove in too hot and wrecked himself. Like the analysts said when it happened, that was likely the pass for the win had he made it because he would've been in 2nd and on new tires compared to old tires for Logano. Also, Larson had NEVER had a lap on this road course because he didn't have a team at last year's race, didn't run The Busch Clash 2 weeks ago and there's no practice or qualifying for this race. Considering he's also with a new organization, new spotter, new crew chief, etc. I'm VERY impressed!!! I feel like Ganassi equipment held him back, even though he always performed better than his teammates there. Now he's in Hendrick equipment, with Hendrick's resources and add to that Hendrick seems to be close to being back to their dominant ways, I really think Larson can put up numbers equal to Chase Elliott.
