Due to the formula used to set the field, Byron, Reddick, Dibenedetto, Chastain, and Briscoe are starting 30th or worse, and it should be fun to see them work their way through. 3. 34McDowellFan posted: 02.23.2021 - 3:02 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Haley back in the #77. Now that we have our first "Normal" (E.g not a Superspeedway or a road course) race of the year. Until our next road course or plate race, I'm not expecting McDowell to do anything special aside from the occasional Top 10. 5. DI9_ForLife posted: 02.25.2021 - 10:30 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @11, I certainly wouldn't call Homestead one of the worst tracks on the schedule, in fact I'd say it's one of the best mile and a half tracks besides Kansas. There's multiple grooves of racing that are naturally there without the ''aid'' of PJ1. 13. Tarheel posted: 02.26.2021 - 5:45 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) No way is it one of the worst. I guess some people think running around in a pack at Daytona and Talladega is racing.. 14. Mile501 posted: 02.26.2021 - 8:49 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Atlanta has long been one of my favorite mile and a half tracks because drivers can choose different grooves and it really seems to reward driver ability and taking care of your tires. In recent years, Homestead has become a lot like that and has likewise become a great mile and a half track. 15. Tarheel posted: 02.26.2021 - 9:52 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 14, agreed. Tracks that wear out tires pretty much always produce better racing than similar sized tracks that don't wear out tires. I wish Nascar would get through their heads that the 550 hp high down force package is better suited for tracks with newer pavement, and let the drivers have 750 hp with small spoilers at Homestead, Atlanta, Darlington, etc. 16. 34McDowellFan posted: 02.26.2021 - 10:14 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) This is the 5th time in a row Denny Hamlin will start from pole at Homestead and 6th time in the last 7 races 17. Mile501 posted: 02.26.2021 - 10:38 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @16 - That is quite the record! And he's done that using 3 different formats (actual qualifying, rained-out qualifying [2019], and no qualifying due to covid). If you look at Hamlin's qualifying record at Homestead, it's like a switch was flipped. In his first 8 Cup races there, he only qualified better than 25th once. In his last 8 Cup races there, his worst starting spot was 8th. 18. Spen posted: 02.26.2021 - 3:38 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @9: I strongly doubt we'll see another first-time winner. The last time race #3 saw a first-time winner was Wendell Scott at Jacksonville Speedway Park back in the 1964 season. That's a longer drought than any other number from 1-28. 19. Really didn't expect such a solid finish for the #6 team, the car was just so slow at Homestead last year. 253. Good to see car #24 back in victory lane on a non-superspeedway track and to see so much parity today, especially Front Row/McDowell, Roush-Fenway and RCR having strong efforts. This season is gonna be a lot of fun, I can tell. 254. Crazy. There's a strong possibility that there could be at least 15 winners this year. Last year there were 13. In 2000, there was ten different winners in the first ten races of the season and twelve out of the first thirteen. In 2003, there were 17 different winners. I think it's safe to say that as an overall whole and not just the 9 team, that Chevy is back. 255. In terms of this race, it was probably an 8/10, it was a solid race. You had comers and goers galore, strategy, some good racing overall even with this 550 HP package. 257. It will probably fall back into the pattern of wins among the same 5 or 6 drivers for most of the season. Every year it seems a few certain drivers rise to the top. We will still probably get an "oddball" winner here or there but Im predicting perhapes 12 or 13 different winners this season at most. 265. Mile501 posted: 03.01.2021 - 9:49 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @264 - It never seems to last all season. In 2000, for example, when there was a record-tying (I believe?) 10 different winners in the first 10 races, the season went on to have just 14 total different winners. However, I don't believe we've ever started a season with 3 different winners who were this surprising. (2000's 10 different winners in the first 10 races were mainly drivers who regularly contended for wins anyway.) That's the thing that makes me wonder if this season could actually be the one to feature 16+ different winners. 266. Mile501 posted: 03.01.2021 - 9:58 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) To add a little more to my last comment...2001 started off similarly to what we've seen this year. We had first-time winner Michael Waltrip, followed by 2nd-time winner Steve Park, then races #4 (Harvick) and #6 (Sadler) were also won by first-time winners. The 2001 season holds the record with 19 different winners. 267. Reddick came up one spot short and he said he was sorry it didn't work out regarding the promotion during his post-race interview. Still a great run for the #8 Chevrolet. 268. The schedule is already the most diverse we've seen and I believe that will shake things up winner wise. I also think we might be seeing somewhat of a changing of the guard for winners. Christopher Bell ran Top 5 for most of Daytona RC and raced his way to the lead at the end. William Byron lead over 100 laps at Homestead on his way to victory. We might see the same 5-6 guys win the majority of races this year, but it might not be the 5-6 guys we're thinking of. 269. Add them to the 3 current winners, and we're up to 11. I'd expect maybe two of the 4 in this group to win one: 1, 8, 12, 48. That would give us 13. And maybe two more from the rest of your list. That would be 15. Not a lot of room to make the playoffs on points, for sure. 271. pacecardriversarecops posted: 03.01.2021 - 6:12 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Most people have covered most of the interesting elements of this race and season so far, but I'll just add that the parity we've seen has been pretty great. As a guy that mostly pulls for underdog drivers and enjoys chaos, it's so far the best Cup season I can recall in about 20 years. I think it helps that there's a ton of young talent entering the sport combined with veterans still in their peak. My instinct is to pump the breaks a little, even with the schedule changes I have no idea if it'll keep up (the three races so far have been on a pack track, road course that most drivers have little experience on, and an idiosyncratic speedway). Things could go back to "normal" at any point. But I'm hopeful we see a true wild west season, where on any given Sunday half the field could realistically contend for a win. 272. Ecu's get sent to Nascar over the winter so they can ?lock? them. We managed to get one back that they didn't lock. It's up to us to double check to make sure they locked it. We didn't. So when they told us prerace that we needed to lock it, it was a unapproved adj. 274. aggressivegoesaround posted: 03.03.2021 - 10:49 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 273 How is that unapproved? NASCAR told them they failed pre-race for an illegal ECU. Hamlin's team chose to replace the ECU, and replacing the ECU (for whatever reason) is an unapproved adjustment. Obviously that's a better choice than not replacing it, since not replacing it would mean disqualification. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
