Prior to this race last year, everything in the world was righted, and then COVID hit and now, 1 year later, we are still in a state of social distancing. Luckily, we made it a whole year(almost) unscathed through the pandemic. 39 cars entered, as Austin Cindric enters for his 2nd cup race. His first on a 1.5 miler, and the 2nd race for Roger Penske to have 4 cars entered into a race. The rough track surface used to be good for old races with high horsepower, but with lacking speeds and overall less power, it makes for a boring race. I hope we can get to see a good 500 mile race, but I'm definitely on the side of "It's going to be as bad as you predicted." 2. Lol! 7. Jimmie4life posted: 03.16.2021 - 10:12 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @6 Could've been out and had fans in the stands if we all followed orders(so did our government), but what can you do? Anyways, I think Sunday's race should be about tire management. The track surface has gotten to the point where it needs a repave, and not as a collective group of fans, but the track can't be raced on much longer in its condition because it is slow, too bumpy, and overall way too sloppy. While it's fun to watch drivers slip and slide on the track surface, if it's slow and lacks passing, then what's the fun in that? 8. Jimmie4life posted: 03.16.2021 - 10:12 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Also, there hasn't been a car to DNF from an on track crash(this is excluding Ryan Preece on pit road in 2019) at this track since 2015, when we saw 2 major accidents here. 9. Yeet posted: 03.17.2021 - 10:59 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) This race reminds me of those really old races you hear about where there was lack of attrition, but the toughness of the track and distance made everyone exhausted. Shoot last race at Atlanta Ryan Newman looked horrible after the race and Bubba nearly fainted. I imagine this year will be exhausting once more. 10. Gopher88 posted: 03.17.2021 - 10:59 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) My underdog pick for this one is Stenhouse. He's been good here in the past and has been really solid this year. 11. Canadianfan posted: 03.17.2021 - 2:38 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @13 It's replacing the Kentucky date which of course is another SMI track. I imagine the other SMI tracks didn't want their dates messed with which put this Atlanta date here. 15. Tarheel posted: 03.17.2021 - 3:12 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I'm a little surprised they aren't running it on Saturday night race, but there may have been a TV scheduling conflict. Of course, for years they ran the Daytona summer race and the Southern 500 in the heat of the afternoon. Plenty of times drivers had to be helped out of their cars at the end, and sometimes had to get relief drivers. 16. Canadianfan posted: 03.18.2021 - 7:37 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @15 Actually the Pepsi 400 prior to 1998 was traditionally run at 10:00am Eastern. This was to avoid the worst of the afternoon heat and make it possible for fans to go cool off at the beach after the race. Another really bad example of courses is the second Talladega race. Traditionally that would be held anywhere from the last weekend in July to late August from 1970 to 1996. 17. Allen posted: 03.18.2021 - 7:37 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @10, Stenhouse... really? He's been average here. Not good. Not great. 18. possum posted: 03.18.2021 - 7:00 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @16 - big difference now is the cars. Back in the day you got a lot of airflow into the car, which made those mid-summer races more or less bearable. Now, for aerodynamics, the cars are designed to get minimal airflow inside. The drivers do have a coolbox and airflow into the helmet, but there's nothing to take heat out of the car, and even if there was the close-fitting modern seats trap heat around the body. If the cars were designed to be more open, like classic stock cars, racing in the summer would be less physically challenging to the drivers. 19. Gopher88 posted: 03.18.2021 - 7:29 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @17, Well, Stenhouse is an average driver and you have to adjust stats to skill. Atlanta is one of his best tracks on the circuit I'd say. Seems to suit his driving style. 12th last year in last year's JTG equipment. It's his 3rd best average finish out of all tracks. Not saying he's amazing here, but it's a track where he has a shot at a top five if things go well. 20. Corey posted: 03.18.2021 - 9:28 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @18 They're working on it. Yesterday during the Goodyear tire test with the Next Gen car, NASCAR was using thermal imaging to make sure the cars were going to be a little more comfortable for the drivers. 21. possum posted: 03.19.2021 - 7:17 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @20 - good. I hope they do something meaningful about it. One thing they could do, which would have multiple benefits, is get the cars off the track. Mandate 4 or 5 inches of ground clearance, and instead of baking the driver with exhaust heat, the bottom of the car would be a big radiator to help get heat out. 22. Allen posted: 03.19.2021 - 10:22 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Doing some digging, Kyle Busch has not led a lap so far in 2021. In fact, his luck is so poor that he's only had 2 wins since winning at Pocono in June 2019. One was to win the championship which he lucked into winning and then winning last year at Texas which was another lucky win due to fuel mileage. What is going on with the 18 team? 23. DI9_ForLife posted: 03.20.2021 - 7:32 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Also, I think it's high time that Atlanta gets a repave and/or a reconfiguration. Yeah the draw of the track is it's worn out surface, but it's just too worn down. Even running pace laps bruises your tires pretty bad, so you'll be begging to come in. I like Atlanta, but I think it would be better off with a repave 25. PucciMan posted: 03.20.2021 - 7:33 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @22 It's still early in the season man. Don't forget that he led the most laps in that championship race as well. Sure, his opponents' troubles helped him win that title, but he wasn't exactly weak like Jimmie Johnson in 2016, who truly lucked into winning it. And as far as that Texas race is concerned, that wasn't any fuel mileage win. If it was, he would see cars running out of fuel in the final laps and that didn't happen. Kyle was simply there at the end and plus, he led 90 laps, which isn't exactly just few. Besides, Kyle isn't exactly good at stretching his fuel. That's why he only won one freaking race out of his 213 wins across all 3 series that way... And to your question - that pandemic simply hurt his performance. He needs pratice and qualifying to really set the car for the race. Without it, he has to do it during the race and when he figures it out, it's usually late. Plus, he isn't exactly immune to bad luck like Jimmie Johnson. That speed is there and he's able to score top 10 finishes, so give it a few races and stop expecting that he's supposed to win every 5th race... 27. RandomFacts posted: 03.21.2021 - 7:29 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) A truly amazing stock car driver can win in a car not handling perfectly. Guess Kyle Busch is just not truly an amazing stock car driver. All the other top stars have shown the lack of practice has not hurt them much and have adapted pretty well, why cant Kyle? Using that excuse over and over is sad. 28. Mannoroth posted: 03.21.2021 - 8:19 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 27. Maybe because Kyle is different and not like others at this? Everyone has to be the same or what? That's no excuse, that's a reality. But unfortunately, we won't see how Kyle would perform with the return of practice and qualifying, because NASCAR found out it's better without it and doesn't have any plans to its full-time comeback. On the other hand, he can also adapt to it and start winning even without it. Who knows? Nothing is impossible. 29. Last week's winner, Truex Jr, among that group; can he check off Atlanta after breaking through @PHX, too? As strong as Hamlin's run, his winning from pole would be the 1st time since Kasey Kahne in 2006 @ATL, & the last time before that being Bobby Labonte in '96. Of that initial group, Kurt Busch hasn't finished lower than 13th @ATL since 2010 (doing so twice), Keselowski/Harvick have won the last x4, & Kyle Busch, in addition to his troubles w/ victory lane of late, both starts the furthest & has a weaker track record @ATL. The prediction I'm going w/ is Brad Keselowski, but I just have a gut feeling it won't be him for some reason. Should his victory play out, it'll mark the 11th win by a driver @ATL from 4th, & the 1st since Carl Edwards in 2008. 32. Getting a little damage in a stack up on a restart is the CC's fault? The transmission popping out of gear and blowing up the engine is the CC's fault? Elliott has mostly had crappy luck this year, and he did drive from the back to the top ten before the bad luck hit him today. 115. I am glad someone pointed this out! Yes, Dave Blaney led 70 laps early on in this race 20 years ago, but had multiple tire issues as the race went on and ultimately finished 34th, many laps down. It was by far the most laps Dave Blaney ever led in a Cup race. Today his son Ryan gets redemption in a way for the Blaney family, coming on strong late in the race and taking the win that his father was unable to earn in 2001. 116. Maybe he will have a solid race at Richmond, but it's starting to look like he and Kyle will have really similar seasons. At Martinsville, he only won once in 2011 and has failed to score a better finish than 5th since that year. Besides, he hasn't led a single lap there since 2016. And at Talladega, anything can happen and he isn't exactly a great superspeedway racer like Denny Hamlin, for example. He has a one win from 2010, but that's all. 131. For most of this race, he looked downright unstoppable. Nobody could get through the corners the way he could early on, and it felt like he was toying with anybody who tried to engage in a head to head battle with him. He was in the best car he's ever had, driving the race of his life, and on the verge of stamping his presence as the early season title favorite since a victory would make him the first driver to win two races this season. You could hear the confidence oozing from his voice each time he spoke on the radio, and for good reason. It felt like everybody else was just racing for second as the only thing as impressive as the speed of Larson's car was his flawless execution in nearly every single corner. And then out of nowhere that last run happened. Ryan Blaney and the No. 12 team managed to put together their best run of the day, clearly distinguishing themselves as second best car on the track. It still wasn't going to be enough to beat Larson's rocket ship, but it was something for them to build off of going forward. But then the unthinkable happened. Larson started to struggle putting the finishing touches on his masterpiece. His flawless execution of every set of corners was replaced by a car that slid around and scrubbed off speed just like the rest of the mortals. Perhaps even more troubling, his tone of confidence on the radio switched to one of concern. The longer Blaney refused to go away, the more doubt entered Larson's mind, and it began to show in his lap times. Then once Larson caught Joey Logano and failed in his attempt to lap him, team Penske got completely in his head. Larson's pass setups became uncharacteristically sloppy, one bad set of corners led into the next, and he never was able to recapture the rhythm we saw at the start of the day. By the time we reached ten to go, the most dominant driver of the race looked completely helpless in a quickly decided battle for the lead. Larson never recovered as he finished the race right near Logano on the track; a 15th place car he caught with about 15 laps to go. What looked like a dream day turned into a finish where he couldn't outrun the 15th place car. In the post race interview, Larson looked like a man who had fallen through a trap door, completely dumbfounded as to how he ended up in second and not in victory lane after the amount of time he spent leaving the field in his dust. This was the best car he ever had, and you could see by the look on his face how much in hurt that he wasn't able to deliver the win for his team. He's going to be asking himself for a long, long time how he let this one get away. 133.
