As we close in on the 10th race of the season, it seems as though it is the Denny Hamlin show. He may not have won yet, but he has a commanding lead over the rest of the field. 8 top 5s in 9 races, an average finish of 4.2, and leads the points by 81 over Joey Logano. But, at a track like Talladega, anything can happen. Hamlin won the previous race here in extremely controversial circumstances of pulling below the line. He has also finished top 5 in the last 3 Talladega races, so he is showing consistency. From what we saw at the Daytona 500, if a big wreck of cars takes out a good chunk of the field early on, it could be a long day for many competitors. Much of that race was spent riding the high line waiting for a move to be made, only to be made far too late, resulting in poor finishes for several drivers. A big crash marred the finish of the race, but it also gave way to Michael McDowell to score his 1st ever career win. 3 1st time winners in the last 7 superspeedway races mean that we could see another new driver claim the trophy at the end of it all. Weather looks like some rain for Saturday, but mostly avoiding the track on Sunday, for what should be a nice, perfect afternoon for a great race. 2. zuel660 posted: 04.20.2021 - 8:32 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Will we have another surprise winner like at Daytona? Just 1 of the last 14 Talladega races has been won by someone not driving for Gibbs, Penske, Hendrick, or SHR. Looking back across the last 39 Talladega races, only 2 could truly be considered surprise winners from teams that don't usually compete for wins. 6. cba2442 posted: 04.20.2021 - 10:01 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 3) Cobb was not approved by Nascar to run this race. 7. Burton won four Xfinity Series races last year and is currently third in that series' point standings. This race marks the return of the Burton name to the Cup series for the first time Harrison's father Jeff Burton retired from driving after 2014. Harrison currently races against his cousin Jeb, Ward Burton's son, in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. 10. Cobb was previously approved to run in the Cup series but tightening restrictions of late led to being turned due on performance criteria. This isn't the first time NASCAR declined to let a driver debut at Talladega, James Davison had to change plans and debut at Pocono last year. 13. I was still made to go to the open tire test to get approved. Not completely surprised for Jen wanting to run cup. From Broken Racing Wookie: (Works on one of the lower Truck teams.) Just to add to this, the Richmond Norm deal is not the first of on track incidents with other drivers in recent years. IIRC, she took herself out at Gateway last year trying to take out Decker, and then her infamous Talladega Truck past lap a couple years back. Also keep in mind that some small teams & drivers aren't seen in the best light by the sanctioning body & fellow competitors. And of lot of that is self imposed by these teams and drivers with how they show up to the track. 21. But NASCAR is clearly thinking that JJC is more likely to do something stupid and cause a major catastrophe than Burton is. But that's probably ass-backwards thinking too. Cobb has been around long enough to know damn well to keep her crapmobile far out of the way when everyone else is going 200+ MPH. Burton's an up-and-coming hot talent who might think his superior talent will allow him to get away with something which he cannot. IOW, HE may be much more likely to cause the catastrophe. 22. Clearly Cobb has more experience at that track than Burton and would be more qualified to race there. OTOH, NASCAR officialdom is notorious for using "other factors" in their judgements; probably Cobb spoke out-of-turn to someone in the NASCAR brass, and now she's being punished for it. 24. Remember last summer when Harrison Burton started a crash from the midfield during single file racing at Talladega? I think it is pretty obvious. You can enter Cup any time you please if you have a notable last name, corporate sponsorship attached, and you are a development driver for an established legacy Cup series team owner. I'm sorry, but if NASCAR thinks she's that bad, then don't let her start. She's wasn't going to be in a good car anyway, so her goal would have been to hang on to the lead pack and hope for a Top 20 by avoiding wrecks. Obviously with how good the past few races have been there, my expectations are high. So long as they don't pull a Daytona and wreck the whole field on lap 14, I think we're setting up for an excellent race. I legitimately cannot pick a winner for this week, it seems as if it's anyone's race, as per usual at Talladega. The ones to watch, though, will be guys like Hamlin, JoLo, Keselowski, Blaney, Elliott and, for a darkhorse, Erik Jones. All of those guys usually perform well at the plate races, so I would expect them to be the class of the field on Sunday barring any catastrophe. That being said, it was still 9.5-10/10 worthy. The other races have just been that good. This one will definitely go down as one of the best of the year. Stage one was absolutely awesome, a great display of how good pack racing can be with this package. Stage two was dominated by strategy and seeing the creme rise to the top. Stage three was a little bit of everything with a wild, but relatively clean finish to top it all off with the best part being that the field didn't try to kill each other coming to the line like last year's fall race. 269. He had 4 wins and finished 2nd in points last season and that alone could be a trivia question to Nascar fans today. The guy goes out and gets the job done most every week and goes about his business. Add to that he already has a Cup championship and Xfinity championship. He's only 5 wins away from tying Mark Martin. He has already passed Dale Jarrett in wins. It's also crazy how he really hasn't been in the Cup series fulltime that long. Logano was in Cup fulltime before Keselowski was. Kyle Busch, Hamlin and Truex all have half a decade of Cup Series experience over Keselowski. Not going to let the fact that my driver wrecked out of the top 5 with a few hundred feet to go change my opinion of the race, that'd be pretty juvenile. As fun as these are, we have to keep the cars on the racetrack. Every time we come to this track it feels like a car flips, and Logano landed hard on the roof and correctly pointed out that he's lucky he wasn't hit upside down in the window net like Newman. The Brickyard last year showed that drivers can withstand even the hardest impacts when the car doesn't flip, but if it's upside down then all bets are off. 280. sloom posted: 04.25.2021 - 7:15 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Sponsor updates #16: Chevrolet / Hyperice #42 Caregility / Yorktel 281. You same "FANS" would've had a heart attack in the early 80's when Darrell Waltrip won 12 races out of the 29 they raced and did that 2 years in a row. Or from mid 90's to 2001 when Jeff Gordon won 1/3 of all the races and Dale Jarrett, Mark Martin won the rest. It's this way in all sports. The Yankees, Lakers and Celtics, the Patriots, Senna, Schumacher and Hamilton, John Force and Tony Schumacher in NHRA and on and on.
