David posted: 04.27.2021 - 2:53 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) By now you're surely aware that NASCAR owns this site. They removed comments a long time ago from NASCAR.com and they are doing the same thing here. Not only can't comments be posted anymore (shortly) but we can't even read the old comments. Traffic on this site is going to crater, and it's well-deserved. But ask NASCAR if they even care. 16. zuel660 posted: 04.27.2021 - 3:15 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @15 my traffic will definitely crater, as the comment section is the main reason I come here. I love looking up old results, especially those 25+ years ago, to read neat little side stories and anecdotes about races of yore. Without those, this site becomes completely bland. 17. NASCAREnthusiast posted: 04.27.2021 - 3:18 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I never had any idea that there was a NASCAR.com comments page. But why remove them entirely? If they don't want offensive comments then they should just have the moderators be more stringent. And there are good faith comments to like updating info. 18. Ralphie posted: 04.27.2021 - 3:18 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Bland and uglier. Whose corporate executive decision concluded that these new pages look acceptable? The old ones were just fine and looked a lot better than this crap. 19. A.J. posted: 04.27.2021 - 3:44 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) So let's review, while we still can: 1. Make the pages uglier and harder to read. 2. Remove important functionality that attracted people to the site and keeps them coming back. 3. Actually "improve" not one damn thing. Bravo, NASCAR. What's next, full-screen ads popping up after every click? Gotta make up for all the revenue that's going to vanish when people who used to visit dozens of times every day now visit once a week or so. Right? 20. David posted: 04.27.2021 - 3:54 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) If this were anyone but NASCAR I would have a tiny bit of faith that they would realize their stupidity and undo the damage they are in the process of doing, and at the very least restore the capability to _view_ old comments and blogs if not add new ones. I won't be holding my breath. 21. Anonymous posted: 04.27.2021 - 4:56 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Shame on NASCAR.com. Danish_Pie posted: 04.27.2021 - 6:47 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) There is still a way, a ridiculous and convoluted way that you can seemingly continue to ?read and post comments, at least for now. If you're to open a tab and paste any link to a race comments page, for example this one. https://www.racing-reference.info/comments?id=2021-11&s=W You can edit that link to get to other race comment pages by changing the year, race number for that season, and the letter(s) at the end that represents that series on the site. For example, if you wanted to get to the 1979 Daytona 500, you could make the link: https://www.racing-reference.info/comments?id=1979-02&s=W Or for the 1997 ARCA Atlanta finale. https://www.racing-reference.info/comments?id=1997-22&s=A The 2016 Indy 500 https://www.racing-reference.info/comments?id=2016-06&s=O Same goes for exhibition races, as they all have a listed order they're in on the site by year, which is contained in the link to their race pages, followed by X. The 2013 Eldora Last Chance Qualifier https://www.racing-reference.info/comments?id=2013-23&s=X Or the Daytona Duels since 1972, using the letter Q and the number of whichever duel it is. Duel #2 for 1973 https://www.racing-reference.info/comments?id=1973-02&s=Q The same goes for driver pages, though you'd have to use the shortening the site does of the the first five letters of their last name followed by the first two letters of their first name, followed by 01 or 02 or henceforth, depending on how many different drivers have that combination of shortenings. https://www.racing-reference.info/comments?drvid=earnhda01 https://www.racing-reference.info/comments?drvid=earnhda02 https://www.racing-reference.info/comments?drvid=pettyri01 Same for owner pages, though it might be a bit more guesswork to get some of those. (Owner pages do still have comments linked to their pages, at least as I'm typing this.) https://www.racing-reference.info/comments?ownid=earnhda01 https://www.racing-reference.info/comments?ownid=enterpe01 https://www.racing-reference.info/comments?ownid=jrmotor01 Tracks also still have comments on their pages as I'm typing this, which I definitely hope stays, cause the link to get to track comments is trkid followed by a seemingly random number, so it'd be mighty hard to get to the one you'd want except by chance. https://www.racing-reference.info/comments?trkid=029 https://www.racing-reference.info/comments?trkid=131 It's not pretty, and it's not easy to access, but there is a workaround. They haven't kicked quite enough dirt on us yet heh. Also, to webmaster, I assume it's because of this recent update, but it seems that for all of the pages of drivers in which there are multiple names, i.e., Jim Smith, all the pages that have a 2 or 3 in the link are broken, seemingly because the second parenthesis after the number is missing for all of them. https://www.racing-reference.info/driver/Jim_Smith_(2/ https://www.racing-reference.info/driver/Bob_Green_(2/ https://www.racing-reference.info/driver/Jeff_Jones_(2/ 27. possum posted: 04.27.2021 - 6:58 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @20 - unclear to me if this is an intentional change, or just a screwup in the new page format (which, as multiple folk have commented, was a totally unneeded change that makes the pages harder to read). I can create a separate webpage that makes the URLs easier to access, if we know that commenting will be allowed to continue. Or if commenting will come to an end soon, we as a community can find another place to gather. But it would be nice to get a clear answer one way or the other. 31. Not only that, but no more making corrections to date of birth/death, no more updating sponsors from older races, no more fixing other various mistakes. That in itself was bad enough, but ruining the site is a whole other thing. The new design is worse in basically every way. Here are just a few issues with the new design -The new font is ugly, Arial worked fine, and is a pretty "standard" font, there's no need to try and use something uNiQuE when a standard, easier to read font works fine -The stats for drivers page is also poorly designed. Why are the columns so big? Why are the series logos so oversized? It makes them look blurry as heck. -The tab names are completely worthless now. They used to say "Driver (name) career statistics" or "(Race Name) Results". This was useful when you had multiple tabs open, but now it just says "Driver - Racing-Reference" or "Race Results - Racing-Reference". -The random button doesn't work at all unless you only want Terry Evans -Multiple features have been removed and just led to 404 pages now (sorting a race by laps led, car number stats for a year, and more -Numbers overlap the border in various places -The laps and laps led columns just look weird. They should either be made smaller or the numbers should be centered -Don't even get me started on mobile. The site is absolutely atrocious, it's basically unusable. In fact, I can make a separate list of issues for mobile Mobile issues -Flags are way too big -Can't zoom at all and some of the things are far too small -The word wrapping is abysmal, the height of the columns is inconsistent I have no idea how this got approved, but considering this is the organization that has dwindled its fanbase for years now with changes that make no sense, it only makes sense for them to do the same to their stat site. The site is a mess now, and will also contain a lot less information in general, and will probably become bombarded with ads in the future to make up for the lower amount of traffic. 0/10 redesign, but I'm just surprised it took NASCAR this long to destroy the site. As for me, I started posting under this name about 4 years ago. As you can probably tell by the username, this year has been good for me. It's been a fun ride, I've enjoyed seeing some of the discussion on here. I used to be on Twitter but left that. I might make a Reddit account in the future since this is obviously going away soon. So that's probably it then, I suspect this will be the final time I post on here. -34McDowellFan 38. Jimmie4life posted: 04.28.2021 - 1:21 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I am so upset right now. NASCAR has once again taken down something that didn't need to be. This website was one I always seemed to visit and loved interacting with the community. We of course got into some arguments or disagreed, but communities do that. That's what makes us human. Now, they want to take it all away. I hope you are happy with yourself, NASCAR. It might be the last time I ever will visit this site. You've killed Racing-Reference in the past 4 months, and you will see this website slip into obscurity. 17 years of commenting just... gone. All gone for good. 580K comments, hidden away forever. Over the past few years I had tons of fun talking, but now, I don't know what to do. At times, yes, folks got really opinionated about likes and dislikes of specific drivers (because, well it IS the internet), but overall the quality of comments and knowledge level here has been good. Having a strong interest in NASCAR history (back to the 1950's and 1960's), the ability to comment on those races has done a lot to clarify and expand on stories that don't show up in the raw data. I'd hate to see all the work that went into shedding more light on that less well documented era lost in this transition. But those days are apparently over, as far as on this site goes. I might try to do the same in the NASCAR subreddit or discord servers, but it will be harder. Without mods to stop a comment before it is posted, people can throw whatever sh*tty personal attack they want at you. It has been nice being able to do that here, and I will surely miss that ability. But as long as this way of commenting is possible, I will continue. If NASCAR wants more fans, they should be embracing this site and the features on it. I'll probably still use this site as it is a great database for all results of all major racing series, but without comments, there will be contexts that people will never pick up on. I haven't fully decided what to do with them, but I would like to try to preserve at least some of the unique information and community that we have here. I encourage people to check The Spotter's Stand forum (see link in comment #41) for future updates. I have changed the settings in the forum so now anyone can view it without registering. I don't know if NASCAR is open to suggestions on this, but I think a good compromise would be to allow comments only on race pages that are more than, say, 10 years old. And maybe allow comments on retired drivers or those over a certain age. That would enable people to continue adding new information and discussing old races, while preventing people from critiquing present-day NASCAR and any hot-button events that may transpire. 57. It's just that they're making it difficult to access, which for most people amounts to the same thing: having data that nobody can see is pretty much the same as not having the data at all. If the archivers can suck in all of the comments and actually display them to the public then I certainly endorse that idea until/unless NASCAR rectifies this situation. 59. Also, similarly, on any race that has DNQ's, clicking on the car number for a car that failed to qualify links to all the races that number has ever ran in that series, instead of just for that year. 60. I currently have Cup (1949-2003) comments saved, as well as a few other odds and ends, after figuring out a process that's very quick. @57 - I'm not familiar with Archive Team. One thought I've had is to purchase a domain name to use to display old comments and possibly add a forum for additional discussion. I already have some shared hosting space so the cost would be minimal. 61. Crazy to think its been this late into Sunday and this is the first raceday comment. The future of this site I guess. 62. The birthday boy Kyle Busch sweeps the weekend, and a Busch brother won the race sponsored by Busch. Nascar makes an extremely controversial call, waiting for Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Chris Buescher to pit before throwing the caution for a tire that had rolled out into the grass. In my opinion, Nascar should have thrown the caution immediately after, or even just have let it sit. I don't like the call to wait. Matt DiBenedetto, who we all thought was in a must win situation a few weeks ago, finishes 4th and breaks into the top 16 in points. RIP Eric McClure. 63. I know that Busch beer was the reason behind the name, but when I first saw it my first thought was "Did Michael Mrucz hack NASCAR???" RIP McClure Matty D's first time with 2 consecutive top 5's after running in the back half of the top 10 most of the race How's the process of archiving the comments going @Mile501? 64. He also very narrowly picked up a lone win in 2014. In 8 of the last 9 races, Matt DiBenedetto finished higher than he did in the previous race. He has also leaped from 37th to 16th in points during that time. William Byron keeps his impressive top 10 streak alive, scoring his 9th consecutive top 10 finish at Kansas. Austin Dillon has scored 3 consecutive top 10 finishes for the first time in his career, although all of those finishes were just barely in the top 10 (10th, 8th, 10th). New team Trackhouse Racing continues to impress. Daniel Suarez finished 11th at Kansas, his 6th top 20 finish of the season. He ranks a solid 22nd in points. @63 - I didn't make much progress over the weekend, but I'm still working on it. I'm primarily focused on saving older (2003 and before) comment pages from NASCAR series for now. I will probably have them posted online somewhere by the end of the week, though I don't know if I can then post the link here or not... 65. brett posted: 05.03.2021 - 8:37 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) It's worth noting that last place finisher Bilicki said that he had to pit every 20 laps due to a fuel pressure issue in this race. https://twitter.com/joshbilicki/status/1388997712285155337?s=20 66. I'm the one who told the webmaster that NASCAR Cup series were called NASCAR Winsto Cup Grand National Series from 1970 to 1985 and not just NASCAR Winston Cup Series. I hope the site owner to regret about this decision and let comments once again.Best regards from Italy. 67. slowbird posted: 05.06.2021 - 7:13 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) This sucks.
