Here is what NASCAR-World says about this race, which was cancelled after 34 laps and never resumed: "Note: The race is canceled and will never be reorganized. It will not count for the championship. It will not count for the statistics of NASCAR. No gain is distributed to drivers. The race started under a blue sky without any clouds and sun. The land is dry and it will raise a tremendous dust. At one point that drivers no longer see a yard before them and the audience cough as they swallow the dust and the more they no longer see the runway. Lee Petty took the decision to stop in the pits on lap 32 (he was already one lap behind the leader Thompson), he leaves his car and crossed the track running to the gate of flagman. He grabs the red flag and waved himself for it to end this charade or the catastrophe was narrowly averted on several occasions. Officials halt the race in lap 34. Viewers are angry but as their ticket was paid they go without grumbling. The race will never be reinstated in the schedule and NASCAR will never come back on this oval in its history. Note: the average speed and time were not recorded. Note: One and only carreer start for John Schipper in Grand National. Schipper is a Convertible driver." 2. rob posted: 09.16.2009 - 6:09 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) My wife is from Tulsa and we wondered if there had ever been an attempt to run a GN race there. Many of the current NASCAR drivers have competed in the Chili Bowl midget race at the Tulsa Expo Center. 3. Do you have the qualifying results for a scheduled 1973 race at Trenton that was rained out and never rescheduled? 4. awesomegordonfan posted: 09.30.2010 - 5:55 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Wow. That is kinda sad. Only 13 drivers, only 2 Kiekhaefer cars (Thompson and Baker), none of the Flocks, and Lee Petty quitting on lap 32 because of the dust as this race is an "exhibition" race that was cancelled, and most other dirt/horse tracks were dusty all the time. And only two people were out of overheating in these conditions. 5. awesomegordonfan posted: 09.30.2010 - 5:56 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) On a positive note, one of the DePaolo's first races, although it didn't count 6. His one-off with the tintops ended in a crash and this was his last start in a higher NASCAR series. 7. NASCAR agreed with what he did and canncled the race. 9. It's in that category now because NASCAR made the call not to award points or recognize an official race winner after it was shortened, but it was originally part of the points paying schedule. The Grand National series had raced the night before in OKC, with only 12 entries. The Oklahoma races were a long haul for both the series regulars from the Southeastern US and the guys that ran the West Coast circuit full time, and didn't draw big entry fields. 12. I imagine a few people who were in the stands for this race are still alive. Would love to hear their stories. 14.
