Balboa Stadium was a multi-sport stadium built in 1914 and used through
the 1970s before its demolition and reconstruction into the smaller,
current Balboa Stadium. Auto racing was run here from 1937 until 1961
when it was terminated as part of the stadium's changeover to become the
home of the new San Diego Chargers NFL team when the Chargers moved
south after an unsuccessful inaugural season in Los Angeles. The
Chargers played here through 1966.

The stadium's name comes from its location in San Diego's Balboa Park.
