The race in 1954, scheduled to run 500 laps, only ran 496 due to a scoring error caused by inexperience of running long races. At the time it set a record for NASCAR in laps run in a race, and the scorers were unable to keep accurate enough numbers. The track then was taken off the schedule after 1954. The Artesia Freeway was then constructed at the site. 2. Graham Clayton posted: 10.26.2013 - 5:26 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) The only circuit (in 1951) to run three NASCAR races in one season? 3. It shows up at the top of the Torrance CA map, 1951. Thing is, so much had changed. Maybe looking at some maps between then and now can help transfer the exact location. Looks to me like the track is oriented in the 11-5 way. No doubt this is the track, even the 1951 map calls it Carrell Speedway. Bordered South by 177 St west by Normandie Ave East by Vermont Ave North by just over Artesia Blvd. The middle of the school track just south points directly into the first turn. I think Artesia replaced 174th St and that would have cut off the 3/4 turns. 5. It was oriented slightly SE to NW, and looking at modern satellite views, covered the area more or less from the Gardena-Carson Family YMCA to the Food 4 Less across Artesia to the NW. The north end of the oval was still quite discernible in 1963, but nothing at all appeared to be left by 1972. What was the far north end of the oval, turns three and four, is now in the Gardena Willows Wetland Preserve which appears to have a trail where one could actually walk by the area where the far north end of the track was. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
