The organizers eventually wanted a Cup race, but money dried up due to sponsorship and lack of popularity, and 2000 was the last time it was used. I have found a bit pointing towards a 1.4 mile layout used for sports cars in 1997, presumably in about the same area. But I haven't found much more. 2. Right in the middle of LA would certainly be a different atmosphere compared to the normal one at the track, and I wonder if it could help bring in new fans. 4. With the new layout the track only ran through the southern portion of Exposition Park and a bit of neighboring Figueroa Street. 5. You'd think the ALMS would have been all over a LA street race (CART would also have been a good candidate but already having the Long Beach Grand Prix I doubt they would have been interested in another round here). 6. The Coliseum, located within Exposition Park, has hosted number of motorsports itself including many motocross races and even one of the earliest races for Robby Gordon's Stadium Super Truck series (back when it was intended as a stadium racing series before it moved out to road and street courses). 7. As should be expected, the layout was not very good for stock cars and resulted in very little passing. Several incidents occurred as drivers tried to find ways to make moves. One thing I would really enjoy seeing in the future is the NASCAR West Series joining the already stacked lineup for the Long Beach Grand Prix, but at the same time I look back at these races and think that it may be for the better that they don't try. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
